  • "Our 40 th and we had high expectations. Was very specific when ordering our steak and when they arrived I cut into mine and the blood juices were flowing. My steak had been grilled on one side to the desired order turned over with almost the order blue (VARY RARE) and as our server did not appear any where near I started to eat from the edges (the thinner more done) and was enjoying the potatoes and veg's. My wife's order was done to her liking and as ordered med rare and yet mine was much rarer than hers and I order mine medium after much discussion with our server. It was only after I had almost finished my potatoes + veg's the gentleman who brought out our meals from the kit I showed him the rare order. waiter came by then. too late"

  • "My husband and I received a gift certificate for dinner at Hys. Our dinner was wonderful even though my rack of lamb was too rare. Our waiter William was super understanding and we were treated to dessert on the house and we're not required to pay for my meal....even though I didn't complain and would have just paid without saying anything! Would visit again and recommend to our friends!!"

  • "I will start by saying our service was excellent. However every dish we ordered was below par. We got 4 appetizers to start and of the 4 the oysters Rockefeller was the top pick. The escargot, mussels, and ahi tuna did not impress. The steak neptune was the real disappointment. My filet mignon was very salty, just the meat itself. The neptune sauce on top was dry and crusty and the crab tasted ultra fishy. The asparagus were thick and woody. I ordered fries with my meal because I was told they were homemade, they tasted stale, like they were from a frozen bag forgotten in the back of a freezer for years! I am probably being more critical because of the high hopes I had, but I've paid 30 dollars for a much better steak. Hy's is not worth it."

  • "The manager accommodated us so that we could have a private room for our party of 8 and it was wonderful. We were fortunate enough that the restaurant was not that busy during our visit and we had top notch service. We never had to ask for anything, they were on top of everything. The only negative would be the loud music coming from the lounge below. We were told that the restaurant was quite slow (because of the beautiful weather outside) so I'm not sure why there was music pumping for an almost empty lounge. I don't think our group was exactly quiet so for my father to comment over us, it must've been loud. All in all, a great dinner and we would definitely return."

  • "For many years I have told friends and family where the best steak in my life was had. After having enjoyed the steak Neptune at Hy's, I can confidently say that this is now my new best steak ever. Even though the crab meat was almost non existent, I couldn't have savoured the steak more."

  • "The food and service do not come close to offering the value that this restaurant should given the high expense paid for a dinner. All the steaks could have come to the table hotter and with proper seasoning. The prime rib was no was near as good as the prime rib offered at 529 Wellington, yet the price paired is similar. The appetizers were sub-par (i.e. the beef carpaccio had no flavour and the cheese toast tasted like it had cheese whiz on it). The server started out okay and then seemed to be inattentive for the remainder of the service."

  • "I made the reservation on line for my wife and I. We were celebrating her last day of work before retiring. I mentioned this on the reservation. Neither of us had ever been to Hy's before. The decor was very nice. The food was good. My wife and I were both disappointed in what was offered for the high price. If you are going to charge such high prices, fine, but at least give something substantial and special. A bread basket would have been nice. The meal came with no vegetables. Just steak and potato. Vegetables were $10-$12 extra! A dessert or liqueur 'on the house' would have been a nice touch due to the occasion. We each had a glass of wine and shared a salad. No dessert or coffee and the bill was $132 before tip. We left unsatisfied."

  • "We had filet mignon and it was prepared properly - not always an easy task when preparing a blue rare steak. However, the steak was not exceptional in comparison to other high end restaurants so it is rated at very good. Some pressure to order extra items from the menu was tolerated otherwise service was attentive. The restaurant was nicely decorated and comfortable. The wine list was extensive and we were delighted to find brands not normally available in the city. Overall it was a memorable evening for a special occasion."

  • "the only thing that i was impressed by was the ambiance of the restaurant. The service was minimal, we were ignored by our waiter the whole time because his friend was seated next to us so it was more important to socialize then to serve at that point. And when our food finally came our i was very disappointed with the presentation and especially the taste. The crab cake appetizer was oily and pricy, 1 crab cake for $17.50 and dinner was even worst $36 for 4 prawns and 4 scallops smoother in a not so tasty orange yellow cream sauce. The only thing that was actually good was the bread they serve before dinner and the double bake potatoes. The total bill came to an astonishing $204.00. So basically i paid for bad service and bad food!!!"

  • "Paying the price we paid, we expected top notch food, service and dining experience. The service was good, up until the point where I only tipped the waiter $10 and he looked disgusted by it and was rude in mumbling "have a good night." The food was not good at all. Both of our steaks were not done as ordered (undercooked) and they were cold. I had to send mine back so my husband basically finished eating while I was still waiting to begin. The ambience was nice and the wine list had a lot of choices, however, very pricey. I wouldn't eat here again and put out that kind of money."

  • "Our waiter on June 7th was very good, he was attentive and patient with our group. He was chilled for our group and we appreciated that especially with having 2 three year olds with us. He cracked jokes to ease the group into drinks and dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. and BTW my now boyfriend and I had our first dinner at Hys last August and this was like a one year anniversary dinner for us. :)"

  • "Our server, Lawrence, was very attentive but not intrusive and has a good sense of humour. The service was excellent! The last time we were at Hy's the steaks were melt in your mouth delicious. Unfortunately, this time my steak was chewy and the gorgonzola on top was congealed. I did not enjoy it. The red wine we ordered was warm which alters the taste and not in a good way. All in all it was an unexpectedly disappointing experience. At the prices that you charge I expect a certain quality in the food & wine which was not met."

  • "The three of us had a nice evening and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately my peppercorn steak was pretty grissley. Felt like the knife wasn't sharp enough to cut it. Good thing the sauce was awesome to make up for it. Really enjoyed the grilled tomatoes we ordered on the side. Dessert (apple crisp) was too sweet even for me. Woukd need more ice cream to take the sugar down. Good evening. Left in a food coma. Interesting tidbit. Only waiters. No waitresses. Women are only allowed to be cocktail waitresses. Bizarre in 2014 that they can get away with that. "

  • "We ate at Hy's on Friday May 2. We were met at the door by very friendly staff who confirmed our reservation and immediately took us to our table. Once there the the service was very good. The environment is very nice and the acoustics are are great. The food was very good but the prices are a touch on the high side. The wine list is great and will probably accommodate anyone's preference. Overall we had a very enjoyable evening, we were treated very well and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who happens to be in Winnipeg."

Maybe just me but wasted if intended ! It would take the Queen and most of her entourage to intimidate me.   • "Beautiful restaurant. Excellent waiter. Very, very slow to serve food, which was lukewarm (one diner) and so-so. If you want bread to nibble on, you have to order it. Salads were very good. Very disappointed in a pricey steakhouse. I've have much better steak elsewhere."

  • "Perhaps our waiter or the kitchen staff was having a bad day but at $150.00 per person I expect better service. The main course was presented to our party of four but the accompanying side dishes didn't show up at our table for over 10 more minutes. Everyone had started their entrees and had almost finished when the side dishes arrived - and without an apology. Past experiences have always been positive but this was not. Sorry to say the fine dining choices in Winnipeg are competitive and patron choice is often decided on the dining experience, service being a main player."
