Hungry MotherUpscale southern foodGreat quality food and fantastic whisky drinks(they make their own sour mix). The grits, catfish and chicken dishes were all excellent.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMLove Your Mother! We visited Boston from Michigan to celebrate my wife's graduation from Simmons College (finishing a graduate degree 32 years after having graduated the first time!). It seemed fitting to visit Hungry Mother for Mother's Day dinner.
Everyone there welcomed us and treated us with respectful friendliness. Our server was amazing - never hovering or obsequious but always there when needed with helpful advice and cheerful reparte'. Our meals were beautiful and delicious. A fitting end to a wonderful trip.
Thanks again for a wonderful evening and a truly memorable meal. If we ever find ourselves visiting Boston in the future, be sure that we will return to Hungry Mother, eager to see what our next culinary adventure will bring us.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a treatFrom the hostess to chocolates served with the bill, everything was fantastic. I took my mother, sister and dauther there for Mother's Day and we all loved every dish. I got the Catfish/Crawfish that was amazing, mom got the Artic Char and my daughter even liked it and she doesn't like fish. My daughter got the BBQ smoked lamb ribs, a little messy but well worth it with a very unique smoke flavor and I almost forgot they were lamb. My sister got the Sea Bass tartar and loved it, we finsihed off with a creamy custard dessert topped with coffee icecream and homemade graham crackers. The waitress was wonderful and was everyone else who filled our water glasses and cleared out plates. The mom's left with a tulip tied with a Hungry Mothe pin.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally I made itI've been waiting to go to Hungry Mother and went with an executive from work. Absolutely exquisite food, eclectic but deliciously prepared, great wine list. Everything was perfect.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth the Wait!We have been wanting to check this place out for a long time, and it was worth the wait! Not only did it live up to all the buzz surrounding it, it surpassed our already high expectations. One of the best dining spaces/atmospheres I have ever experienced. Incredible service. The food is delicious--highly recommend the catfish! We'll be back.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMDeliciousI honestly didn't think I would like Hungry Mother because I am not a fan of southern cuisine and I don't eat pork.
However, Hungry Mother was delicious. Despite the limited menu, there were many tasty items I enjoyed. I certainly didn't think pimento cheese with saltine crackers would be something I would be interested in, but I really liked that appetizer as well as the boiled peanuts. Hungry Mother also has some great cocktails that they don't promote on their website. Definitely worth checking out!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat! It deserves 5 stars, only reason for 4 stars is that I found the Entree list very short (3 I think)...a few more options please!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is always a special treatThis is always a special treat for us. We have been many times now and will continue to go. The food is always excellent and the menu changes frequently.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulousSmall, cosy little restaurant, a little too noisy for some maybe but otherwise a fantastic choice for those in search of something new, and a fan of Southern flavored food. Service was great and always on point. Servers were knowledgeable, prompt, friendly and non intrusive. Highly recommended.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMI have to say that hungryI have to say that hungry mother may be my favorite restaurant in Boston, well technically Cambridge. I have never been disappointed with the cuisine there. The cornbread is delicious, with just the right amount of the butter. The wagyu brisket was perfectly tender and literally melted in my mouth. And the best part is that they have a great cocktail menu! I will absolutely be coming back soon.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMUsual high quality food & serviceWe went early (5:30 pm) because we couldn't get later reservations.
Food and service were excellent, as usual. The good news is that it was quieter than a peak time when it's too noisy for my wife and me.
The menu needs to be varied more. The small number of choices is fine but if it's the same small number each time you come, it discourages repeat business unless you have a craving for one of the dishes.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGood luck deciding what toGood luck deciding what to order! Everything sounds outstanding and what everyone in my party ordered lived up to it. Save room for dessert.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMA short focused menu ensuresA short focused menu ensures that every dish is perfecton. The best high Southern cooking north of Charleston. Possibly the friendliest service of any restaurant in Boston. The staff act more like hosts than waiters. There is nothing to detract.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was one of the best diningThis was one of the best dining experiences I've had.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe chicken and the parsnipThe chicken and the parsnip pie were stunning. We really also liked the fried pickled okra. Both husband and I would go again!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe only things not to likeThe only things not to like about Hungry Mother are (1) How difficult it is to get a reservation and (2) it's not in the liveliest part of Cambridge. It's worth it, though. The food reminds me of childhood in Virginia.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMThe quality and presentationThe quality and presentation of the food was very good. The cornbread was probably the best we have ever tasted, and the catfish/crawfish etouffe was excellent.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a wonderful dinnerWe had a wonderful dinner at Hungry Mother on a Sunday evening. It was a cozy and relaxing experience. As Floridians, we were excited to try some southern-inspired food in Boston! Everything was delicious! My husband must eat gluten free, and we were so appreciative of the attention the staff gave to his needs. We were so happy to learn that many of the dishes are already gluten free! Thank you so much. We can't wait to come back!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best places around...One of the best places around... Food is amazing and staff is great4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWe loved Hungry Mother. TheWe loved Hungry Mother. The ambience is gabby Cambridge, conversations on travel, meals enjoyed at other restaurants, etc. The appetizer, an Escarole with toasted faro and burratta was simple and delicious. I had the Catfish and crawfish which was flavorful and somewhat spicy. Just what I hoped for. My wife had the Chicken and it was plump and moist with interesting accompaniments alongside. The desert, a Raspberry and grapefruit sauce biscuit with raspberry mousse was a 10.
Our waitress and a other servers were excellent.
All in all we loved HM and will return soon.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMCharming and tasty!Loved it!
Food was excelent, service was friendly and professional, and the restaurant is charming.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was presented veryThe food was presented very nicely and tasted heavenly. There was a decent wine selection and the server was attentive. I will definitely go back next time I am in Boston.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMA must-visit restaurantThe food and wine are terrific here! One outstanding dish is their version of the deviled egg: towering whipped egg yolks on top of melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with a thin slice of pickle in between -- it's gorgeous to look at and even better to eat. And the grits and collard greens are some of the best comfort food I've ever tasted. The service is attentive but not hovering. The restaurant accommodated my request for a table along the wall instead of in the middle of the floor, as I was dining alone and wanted to feel more cozy. I've eaten here twice, and I highly recommend visiting!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThought it was great. ButThought it was great. But surprised it beat Oleana. Only problem was a vey limited menu.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food in a charming settinReally delicious food at Hungry Mother. The chef is creative, using familiar ingredients in new and satisfying ways. The resturant is small with intimate nooks. Service is friendly and unobtrusively skilled. I really love this place!4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWe made a pre-theater (5:30We made a pre-theater (5:30 pm) dinner reservation to check the place out after seeing it marching off with the Munch Madness crown so many times. The service was excellent - cordial, attentive and efficient. The food was good, but my husband grew up in the south, and the food didn't quite match his expectations (texture of the pork belly in the pork belly deviled eggs, spicing of étouffée and hush puppies), so he was not as happy with his meal as I was with mine (cast iron chicken and collard greens). It was definitely worth a visit. The menu is not large, but the items on it are all fairly unusual and interesting.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply outstanding! What startedSimply outstanding! What started out as, "Hey, let's try this place", turned into a very memorable experience. The atmosphere is comfortable and cozy; the service unobtrusive, yet extremely efficient. The food knocked my sox off. For appetizers, the crawfish and grits with tasso ham (go figure) was unbelievable; entrees with black walnut romesco, a char with red peas and maitake mushrooms. All were imaginative, well executed and ample. There is an impressive but reasonable wine list. One of the principals - John, acting as the Maitre 'd circulated constantly, and clearly knew every nuance of the business, the food, its' origins, and his clientele. Definitely a repeat when family/friends or business partners come to town.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Lives Up to ExpectstionsWe had a lovely relaxing dinner before going to the movie at the Kendall Cinema. The beef short rib special was superb. The pork belly appetizer was wonderful as well. I had heard good things about this restaurant and it didn't disappoint.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMWe ate here on Saturday forWe ate here on Saturday for a nice date night out and had a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, our service was great. I will eat here again. Make sure you have a reservation though as seats fill up quick!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time here. The staffFirst time here. The staff couldn' t have been more friendly and accommodating. The food was fresh and highly enjoyable When back in Cambridge, I wouldn't hesitate to put HM at the top of my list for a return engagement!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWhy did I wait so long???One of the best overall meals I've had in Boston. We had the cornbread with sorghum butter, shrimp & grits, and fried oysters to start, followed by the crawfish & catfish etouffee and cast iron skillet chicken, with the peanut and chocolate cake for dessert. Unbelievably tasty and properly seasoned food, unnoticeable-in-a-good-way service, a homey atmosphere, and good bourbon. I'll be back.3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMHungry Mother is without aHungry Mother is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in the Boston area. While others start strong and then inevitably slide downhill, Hungry Mother just keeps getting better!3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMsimply amazing!simply amazing. on par with any of the best restaurants i've been to in Boston. From the perfectly cooked trout, to creative cocktail offerings.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA Must TryFor apps we got the skillet cornbread which was buttery crispy and soft all at the same time, you must try this before dinner. We also order the sweet breads which had good flavor but I am not a fan of the concept. For dinner I ordered the skillet chicken which was flavorful and filling. The dessert was mind blowing, I was not expecting to love it that much. We ordered the chocolate and peanut upside down cake and it was one of the best restaurant desserts I've ever had. The wait staff was amazing about putting a small candle on the plate to celebrate my bf's birthday as well. They even had the bar tender Google how to make his favorite drink and they made it perfectly. Perfect dinner!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMLet me count the ways...How do I love Hungry Mother? Let me count the ways. 1. My cocktail (I said pineapple, tropical, a little sweet) and they brought me a heavenly dream in a glass. 2. Shrimp and grits. 3. Fried Oysters. 4. Catfish. 5. HUSHPUPPIES 6. Brisket. 7. The cornbread. 8. Blueberry peach brown butter pie 9. Cappuccino 10. The service. 11. The owners. 12.I feel so happy every time I go.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI tried Hungry Mother becauseI tried Hungry Mother because of the Chef's reputation. As a foodie, that was all I cared about. I expected great food but didn't know what else to expect, I had never even read a review.
I was more than pleasantly surprised. The service staff, was perfect. Communicative but not overbearing. The Hostess found a way to squeeze my date and I in earlier than our reservation, but we still had a wait so we went to the bar. The bartender was extremely knowledgeable, and our drinks were perfect for what we were looking for. The waitress was understanding when we kept getting distracted from our menus, and made sure our courses came at an equally / appropriately slow pace. The food was too good for words. Try the tounge.
Fantastic. Tr3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMi've been coming to this restauranti've been coming to this restaurant since it first opened. with each visit, the food, quality, service and atmosphere were always excellent--the same is true for my most recent visit. love this place!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMVery happy with the meal exceptVery happy with the meal except a very unpleasant taste to the sauce/topping to the steak dish. Walnuts are nice but this blend was not.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCame to Hungry Mother on theCame to Hungry Mother on the recommendation of a friend. Immediately, I was impressed with their service. Phenomenal. I wasn't sure what I wanted to drink and our waitress happily recommended some of their cocktails. I had a couple and they were equally great. The food was delicious - my favorite was the fried oysters but my trout entree was fantastic. I love that their menu changes - so I will definitely be back. Oh, and the concierge gets bonus points for chasing down my brother after we'd already left the restaurant just to return his baseball hat which fell out of his jacket. Great experience.3/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGood drinksThe food is good but a little bit overpriced. I like their drinks tho.2/28/2013 12:00:00 AMFor my first course, I startedFor my first course, I started with the Berkshire pork belly "deviled eggs" with bread & butter pickles and pea shoots. I have to admit I was trick by the apostrophes in this dish. I love deviled eggs so I was dreaming of simple deviled eggs with bits of pork belly flecked in along with a handful of pea shoots to offset the denseness of the yolk mixture. Unfortunately for me, but quite fortunate for lovers of pork belly, the dish was served with 2 large hunks of pork belly, topped with pretty swirls of deviled egg stuffing with chives and served with a side of pea shoots. I enjoyed the combination, but T liked it more.2/27/2013 12:00:00 AMWould recommend!Delicious food. Service was great but could have been better for the price/ambiance of the restaurant.2/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
