Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Hungry Mother many times, but the other night we brought a "Foodie" visiting from out of state. He always has something negative to say about a restaurant, BUT to our great surprise and pleasure he gave Hungry Mother a totally positive, thumbs up review and said he'll make a reservation the next time he comes to Boston! Whew!"

  • "We were invited to this place by our daughter and son-in low with a promise of a great food. It was... It attracts young crowd, mostly students and young professionals. The service was efficient , but not overbearing. The food was amazing: simple, but fresh with very unique combination of ingredients, with a lot of flavor. The kids shared the chicken dish and we went for seafood. Everything was just terrific. Great experience!"

  • "The drink service was a little slow, and the menu is limited, but what the do serve is fantastic. The boiled peanuts app is a must try. We also has the deviled egg app. It was deviled eggs with a small board or toasts, spreadable cheese and cured meat. Delicious. The cat fish was the star for us, and the chicken paled by comparison. Dessert was the chocolate pie which seemed like pudding in a basic pie crust, that was a bit of a letdown. All in all, great spot. We were there at 8:30 on a Friday night. The place is small, so make reservations."

  • "Having heard great things about Hungry Mother from friends, for several years, I had high expectations. But the food didn't meet them. The cornbread was delicious, but the other dishes we had were just OK; there were several that we didn't care about finishing. And of three desserts, there was only one that remotely interested me (and I love dessert). I won't be back. The drinks were lovely, the service was good, and the noise level was nice - quiet enough to hear one's companions without straining."

  • "Had my first meal here a couple of nights ago and very impressed. Real attention to detail, from the cocktails straight through the meal. The boiled peanuts were a great snack to start with (salted after cooking rather than boiled in brine, though). Pimento cheese a fantastic starter, with a couple of the best deviled eggs I've ever had, and then the catfish for a main was just an intriguing pile of flavors and textures. Service was attentive without being overbearing, nice lookin' place filled with nice-looking people. A bit on the quiet-and-reserved side, but we had a late reservation so not sure of the usual vibe. Prices what you'd expect (which around Kendall means high but not outlandish)."

  • "When finding this spot I was surprised to walk up to what looks like it could be a residential door outside of Kendal Sq. When you get in the atmosphere is warm and cozy with the food following suit. We had the blue fish and the catfish. They went in very different directions, the bluefish being served with marinated chunks of liver and escargot, the catfish being cornmeal breaded and served over dirty rice with chorizo. Both dishes were delicious and comforting."

  • "The food was outstanding. The tables too close. Too loud--conversation impossible. Poor ambience."

  • "It was awesome!!! Everything; food, cocktails, wine, ambience. Loved it."

  • "I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and it was simply amazing. We had excellent drinks (#69 Holland and some sort of Campari for him), delicious appetizers (steak tartare and a squid/ham dish that was delightful), and delectable main courses (the chicken and the redfish). All topped off with an amazing panna cotta special). Everything came out at the perfect time and temperature and our server was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We are big foodies and love to try new restaurants and this was the best so far, by far. Looking forward to eating there again for another big occasion."

  • "Truly one of the best dining experiences I have had in Boston."

  • "We had a very nice dinner. Our server was smiling, attentive, and thoughtful. The food was delicious -- the spices and sauces were novel but not overstated, and the presentation was very elegant. The room was not large and we had a couple of short, spontaneous conversations with diners nearby which were fun. All of the staff we spoke to were very pleasant. I am sure that we will be back again in the future."

  • "I was very excited to eat here, especially since I am from Marion, VA. I ordered the catfish and it was absolutely superb! There was such an interesting combination of flavors and textures. My fiance ordered the redfish, and we were both disappointed with that particular dish. The redfish was cooked very well, but the texture of everything else was pretty mushy and it was very bland."

  • "Great food - French inspired Southern food - with some really nice cocktails, laid back decór, and a nice vibe. Always a great experience."

  • "I went to Hungry Mother to celebrate my husband's birthday. Even though I had made a reservation, we were sat at a very weird table, even though the restaurant was not full and there were much better tables open. I should have spoken up, but I didn't want to make a fuzz. Our waiter was not friendly at all and tried to get more tip than he deserved. Even though that was annoying, I am willing to overlook the service flaws, since the actual food was flawless. The cornbread is to die for, I had some shrimp appetizer and a beef entrée with a side of collard greens. Every dish was delicious. The dessert (panacotta) was also excellent. I will definitely go back again because of the food, I hope the bad service was just a fluke."

  • "This restaurant has a unique menu of Southern-inspired cuisine. Something for everyone in the protein area."

  • "Good adaptation of Southern Cuisine to a New England setting. The grits were very good, but the fish was exceptional. Service was a little less good than the food and the noise level was a little high. It is clear that the chef takes great care in the design and preparation of the dishes."

  • "Four appetizers and a dessert were all we needed to know we loved the place. The term "southern" style often brings up images of gigantic platters of charred meat smothered in various sauces, but chef's approach to "southern" is refined, subtle, and unique. Maybe no dish reflects this more than the "pork sandwich on a biscuit", Korean style pork belly on a sesame biscuit, which was a mouthwatering surprise and a highlight. The cornbread with sorghum butter was amazing, and the barbecued shrimp equally impeccable. Of course, mentioning specific dishes is pointless- the menu changes pretty much daily- but be sure that this restless chef can conjure southern goodness out of any available ingredients. Highly recommended."

  • "Hungry Mother stands out with it's southern-style menu that changes every day to fit the sustainable practices they try to instill in their food choices. Not for vegetarians. I put a note that it was my partner's birthday in the online booking, and they put a candle in the blood orange-cream chocolate layered cake without me asking. Friendly service from greeting to calling a cab for us. Excellent mixed drinks and local brew on tap. Cornmeal crusted catfish, fried oysters, and the skillet cornbread sorghum butter were the best. Very nice presentations. One of the best collard greens I've ever had with the southern touch of pepper vinegar to give it a sweet, tangy bite. We even had leftovers to take home!"

  • "Take all of the most questionable food tropes from Appalachia and the mid-South regions, update and refine them until they deserve to be called delicacies, and then serve with expertly paired cocktails."

  • "Always great. Only issue is the menu is so limited. But, I will keep on returning...............whenever I can find an open time for a reservation."

  • "Amazing food with such creative flavors. All the appetizers were great. Unfortunately our server made our meal feel rushed from start to finish. Very unhelpful and pushed us through the meal I felt like. She didn't want to give our party time to chat, and it wasn't even that busy (Sunday night). Still would absolutely recommend. Now I can see why this place is always booked. The food is unique and indulgent. Be prepared and make a reservation well in advance."

  • "We visited last night and were really pleased with Hungry Mother. We tried the wine du jour, some unique beers from the list, cornbread, fried oysters, catfish, and fried rhubarb pie. The food was well presented and flavorful, I'm not sure I'm in love with this type of cuisine but I was able to appreciate it as it was delicious and I enjoyed trying something new. What really sets this place apart is the welcoming, comfortable atmosphere and the attentive service. We were well accommodated when it came to menu recommendations, silverware resets (at least 4x through the meal) and they picked up movie tickets for us at the Kendall Square Cinema. Hungry Mother is definitely a gem in Cambridge and we look forward to returning."

  • "Went in for a reservation on Saturday night and had to wait 40 minutes to be seated. We were offered drinks but declined because there is really no where to wait there and it is cold by the door. The staff did bring us water while we waited, which was nice. When we got to our table, we were given appetizers. While the food was great, the appetizers were not things we would have ordered off the menu. We all would have preferred our drinks being comped, and not brought appetizers we didn't eat. Someone could have a food allergy, too, so this signaled poor management decision to me. The food was excellent and I would return for that, but I'm in no rush to come back. It is too bad our experience was ruined before we ate our meals!"

  • "Every time I'm in Cambridge I try to eat at Hungry Mother, and every time I'm utterly pleased. Innovative menu, tasty beverages, and friendly effective service. Just can't go wrong. Oh and the pork belly with the spring onion kimchee? Yummy!"

  • "Hungry Mother is one of the best restaurant experiences one can have in Boston/Cambridge. Its intimate setting and outstanding southern cuisine makes it a must in the local restaurant scene. The staff is attentive and welcoming and commited to ensuring a satisfying visit."

  • "Made a reservation 7 weeks out for 6:30 and still got stuck at the table next to the bathroom and coat room on the highway from the main service station to the rest of the (nicer) dinning room. Make sure when you make your reservation you ask for one if the tables that's not in the restroom."

  • "Really enjoy this place. We have been back multiple times, menu evolves and is always great. It is hard to imagine that you could crave boiled peanuts and cornbread but they are a real treat! Service is great, low key, comfortable but still really nice place to be for an occasion."

  • "Hungry Mother, why did we wait so long? Rave review for the Catfish and Dirty Rice. Moist fresh fish, perfectly seasoned rice mix. The best Collards ever. We were way too full for dessert, but even the tea was terrific. Nice unobtrusive service. Homey but pleasant atmosphere. We will be back!"

  • "I had heard a lot about Hungry Mother and was looking forward to trying it. This restaurant did not disappoint. The service was great from the reception at the front door, to the barman, to our attentive waitress. The food is billed as Southern, but I would call it modern Southern or Southern-inspired. The cornbread with sorghum butter was to die for. I don't normally order chicken in restaurants but this dish was amazing, with very crispy skin and moist meat, on a bed of parsnip puree. I just wish there had been more of the puree to enjoy. The coconut cake was delicious without being overly sweet. One warning to picky eaters - the menu is quite limited (only 5-6 main courses?) so this is not the place if you need 100 menu items."

  • "Lovely, simple, farm to table feel. Very cozy environment with more social scene in front dining area. Food is flavorful, unique - no risk of salt, garlic or sugar taking over your palate and smothering the natural flavours set on your table. Service has ranged from fairly good to great (mostly great). It's always a treat to get a table there. The menu constantly changes, which as far as I'm concerned a sign of a conscientious menu, sustainable practice and interested chef."

  • "Hungry Mother is small and short on pretense. Many of the dishes on the menu have Southern roots and as such are unusual in these parts, but delicious. Cornmeal-crusted catfish, cheese grits, boiled peanuts, crispy smoked pork with collards ... you get the idea. Definitely give it a try!"

  • "We loved our fried oysters and waygu beef tongue appetizers. My husband had monk fish, which was excellent, and I had the skillet chicken, which was good but nothing special. Our waiter was great, but for some reason we had to wait a really long time for our main dishes to arrive The only bad part was that it was extremely noisy. There were some panels on the ceiling which looked like they might be there to absorb noise, but they did not help."

  • "Wonderful and quaint restaurant tucked away in Kendall Square. Southern cooking Cambridge -style. The corn bread starter was the tastiest ever, and the meal tasted fresh from the farm. Overall, a unique, intimate and most enjoyable experience."

  • "I've been to Hungry Mother twice now, and have been amazed both times. The restaurant is southern charm/chic and very welcoming. The staff was friendly and the service was impeccable. And you simply cannot go wrong with any of the food choices. All of it is fresh and flavorful! The BBQ Shrimp and Grits is a must for an appetizer, and each time I've been I end up ordering one of the specials for an entree. They mix up the menu with what is in season and I always want to try it all! The drinks and deserts are also excellent. Overall, you just can't go wrong with Hungry Mother!"

  • "Had a wonderful meal at Hungry Mother which was recommended on The Guardian website. The food was outstanding. We had seafood and fish dishes and the wine list was short but great. We enjoyed a great US wine at a reasonable price. The service was perfect with friendly and attentive staff, but not overbearing. We also loved that the restaurant area was not playing music. The only sound was conversation of a lot of happy diners. Don't miss an opportunity to eat here if you can."

  • "Overall, the food is good, but not great. It's overpriced for what it is. The good thing about Hungry Mother is that it's one of the few restaurants in the Cambridge area serving authentic-style Southern food. Nice touches to the overall theme included having RC cola and using Ball glass jars as the water glasses. However, my entree, the cast iron chicken, was way too salty. The beef tongue appetizer is interesting but not particularly special, and the peach tart was good, but not as good as I would have expected from a formal restaurant. The cappuccino was excellent. Service was attentive, but I was confused and unimpressed with how often they checked in on us, yet did not clear away the empty plates from our small 2-person table."
