"Such a pleasant experience! All dishes on the menu sounded imaginative and delicious. We both chose the Virginia pompano, the first time I can remember seeing it offered in this area. The skin was crisp, the meat moist. Alot of bones to work around, but the dish was worth the effort. It was paired with pea green salad enlivened by some unique kind of vinaigrette dressing. The flavors worked well together. Like spaghetti, the pea greens require that you develop a certain level of skill to get them from the plate to your mouth successfully. Otherwise the whole salad comes up strung together in one elongated strip. But coping with it is kind of fun. Atmosphere cheerful, not special. Wait staff helpful. Happy faces on the diners!"

"I think this was my seventh time at Hungry Mother. Unbelievably, I continue to be even more impressed with the outstanding food and friendly, knowledgeable service with every visit. The owner remembers us and brought a fabulous after dinner cordial I never would have otherwise tried to our table. Hungry Mother makes me so happy! Not fancy, just superior quality of ingredients and flavors. Highest possible recommendation."

"Memorable food. I had never had catfish before and so hesitated trying it, but now I would walk 10 miles for their pecan encrusted catfish. It was moist, tasty, and creatively balanced with seasoned rice and red peas. Another winner at my table was the parsnip soup.
We also found the serving portions the perfect amount - neither too small (as some upscale restaurant tend toward), nor overdone."

"After hearing wonderful things from friends, we finally made reservations at Hungry Mother for my mom's birthday. It was an all-around great experience. The food was tasty and nicely presented (the winners at our table were the fried oysters and gnocchi), the waiter and wine guru were very knowledgeable and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy. What an excellent way to represent southwest Virginia!"

"This restaurant did not disappoint in any way. The service was very attentive without being intrusive. Excellent drink choices. Our first courses, the Parsnip Soup with crab hushpuppies and the Monte Cristo, were outstanding. Main courses - Fried Oysters had a subtle kick, and the Pecan Catfish Meuniere was excellent. The cornbread is a mouthwatering must have. We could not resist the Meyer Lemon Tart - delicious! Good coffee to finish. My only criticism is that the tables are small, but proved to be adequate. We have already made our next reservation."
