A word from Hungry Hunter
The Hungry Hunter has been a South San Francisco tradition for over 44 years. That is fitting because tradition is what we are all about. The most comforting food is always traditional food. From our hand selected, slow roasted prime rib to our filet mignon or our flame broiled salmon, our menu offers something for everyone, on every occasion. Each meal includes our traditional table side fresh salad service with lettuce and your choice of ten different ingredients. This is served with our baked fresh daily sourdough bread. Don't forget that no tradition would be complete without indulging in one of our classic libations or signature desserts.
So share your next evening out with us and we will make it a memorable one. With traditional food so good it just might become a tradition with you too.

  • Disappointing Birthday Dinner
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 11/4/2012
I was disappointed for my birthday dinner. Greeting at the door and in the bar was great. Our server was not. I handed a coupon that said there was a discount for my birthday which he seems, he did not read. Took our order ok and dinner was fine. At the end of dinner, he brought the check without asking us for dessert nor bring my birthday dessert. I was bummed for the evening.

The tableside salad, for some reason does not taste the same when I use the same ingredients at home. It is fresh, crisp and offers many varieties for your plate. The menu is extensive and satisfies every person's palate. My prime rib was very moist and tender with the creamed corn and broccoli at its optimal.

  • The first fancy date my now-husband
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 10/23/2012
The first fancy date my now-husband took me on, in 1984, was to a family restaurant known for prime rib. It had burgundy walls with hunter prints on them, and for the salad they brought a wheel of ingredients to the table and asked if I wanted each as they built my salad. Hungry Hunter was *EXACTLY* like that - hunter prints on the burgundy walls and all. The prime rib was okay but not great; the horseradish was mayonnaise with almost no kick. My service was just okay - they couldn't keep my water filled even though I had no other drink - but there was a table in the room with an 18-month-old in a high chair and the server really bent over backwards to make sure the baby was comfortable and had food he would eat.

My medium rare sirloin steak was really good and the party of 11 of us were pleased. The service was good. One of our party was disappointed in her selection and they readily changed her order. No questions asked.

My first visit to this Hungry Hunter. Service was excellent, cozy atmosphere with fireplace. Portion sizes were huge, as I remembered from visits to other Hungry Hunter restaurants in the past. Quality of the prime rib seemed to be a bit lower than I recall, but the meal was very good overall.

I just moved to the area, and I am convinced good restaurants are few and far between in SSF, San Bruno and Milbrae. This place was not bad, especially considering the limited selection of good places to eat. This place does not deserve an open table 4 stars, had it been somewhere like SF, or San Mateo it would have gotten 2 stars.

My wife and I ordered the prime rib medium rare and it was close to well done. We had to order three different bottles of wine until we found one they had in stock. The meal was inexpensive however and a good value for the money.

For steaks, I wish I had known about this place years ago; the best steak I have had in the Bay Area - period! However, the service is somewhat lacking, specifically lunch. I had dinner and then before my flight, I had lunch. Waiting for over an half an hour for a prime rib sandwich when the restaurant was not impressive! Will I go back? Yes, but now that I know that the service is fair to poor, I will focus on the food!

The service was poor, waiter did not listen. He brought out exactly what we told him we did not want. I had to send my plate back to get it right. The food was not hot the potatoe was old or had been sitting for some time, very hard skin and dry. Very crowded and loud with multiple parties going. Seemed under staffed. One waiter for the entire section + where ever else he was racing off to. Always seemed rushed or in a hurry, but not really getting anything done. It took a long time to close our ticket out. This was our anniversary choice and it was a bust. We will give it one more time tonight (29 Aug). If it is as bad as last - we are done with the Hungry Hunter.

This Hungry Hunter location could certainly use a face-lift. The parking lot is gravelled and unpaved, the place is beginning to show all classic signs of dis-repair. I ordered the steak medium well, and it arrived well done. Cooking a medium well steak is a lost art form for many eateries in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This restaurant is a throwback to the late 80's and 90's and much has NOT changed! They need major rejuvenation on their decor to appease their patrons dining experience. We had a 6:15 pm dinner reservation and I could not wait for the sun to go down so that I Did not have to see the dining room/restaurant in the light!!!

Hungry Hunter was not what I was expecting. The outside looks really nice with flowers and a lot of green. Inside it takes you by surprise, their decoration needs work but when I got the food, it was all worth it. Their steaks, their shrimp and ribs are delicious. Their service was also very good, the waitress kept checking up on us and made sure we had everything we needed.

Haven't been to Hungry Hunter since 1990. The food, service and ambiance were exactly as I remembered-- EXCELLENT! My girl and I were seated very quickly in a comfortable, quiet booth and offered drinks and menus. Our waiter brought our drinks and fresh hot bread within a few minutes. The bread was very tasty sourdough. We then ordered appetizers which were excellent (crab stuffed mushrooms). We recieved our perfect dinner salads a short time after finishing the app's. Our entree's consisted of Prime rib (end cut), fresh veggies, Seared Ahi tuna and mashed potatoes. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted superb! It is good to know that Hungry Hunter is STILL THE PLACE to go for great food at a reasonable price.

I have a gift certificate that I tried to use, but was told that it was no longer valid, even though there was no expiration date. Granted it's many years old, I thought they would still honor it, but they didn't. If you have one you want to use, call ahead of time to make sure they will honor it!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 3/4/2012
This was a first date dinner. The venue is more business man lunch than romantic tryst but it's spacious and quiet and uncrowded (on Sunday evening). The food offerings are varied (heavy meats to quiet nicely done fish) and very good. The chowder was an excellent complement (and extra cost) to our fish dinners. The service was attentive and appropriate for this occasion. I think they knew what we were up to; everyone had a small silly grin for us. One of the few restaurants around here where a personal conversation can be had easily. Good choice for first date dinner.
