A word from Hula Grill - Kaanapali
On the water's edge on Kaanapali Beach, Hula Grill offers a stunning view of the Pacific and of the islands of Lanai and Molokai. From this distinctly Hawaiian vantage point, you are invited to join us as we celebrate the hospitality, culture and cuisine of the islands. Dinner is served in our open-air dining room where you can relax in the ambiance of a plantation era beach house while enjoying renown chef Peter Merriman's Hawaii Regional Seafood, that isn't only a favorite of vacationers, but locals too. Hawaiian fresh fish and locally grown produce are combined to create amazing menu offerings that are as colorful as they are flavorful. Fiery sunsets are served up daily along with live Hawaiian entertainment.

Our Barefoot Bar offers a more casual menu serving both lunch and dinner under authentic thatch roof umbrellas and a sand floor where you can sink your toes in. The Barefoot Bar is seated on a walk-in basis only.

Diner Reviews
  • "For us itś a must to go to Hula Grill on the first evening we arrive on Maui. We already made a reservertion for a table when we were waiting at LAX for our flight. Confirmation was sent immediately after."

  • "We had eaten lunch there in the barefoot area and loved the fish taco's. We came back for a romantic intimate dinner and both had the nightly special which was very good! They have an awesome chili pepper water that we bought to take home with us. I drowned the bread they gave us in it and couldn't have had enough! Would go back again."

  • "My wife and I went here while on vacation in Maui. The experience was amazing. Our waiter was top notch. He knew the menu, and was a good conversationalist. We had a perfect view of a sunset on Ka'anapali Beach, and the weather/temp was also perfect. Then there was the food. I ordered the pan seared snapper. I have never had snapper that was prepared better than this. It was perfectly pan-seared, lightly golden brown on the outside and white and buttery on the inside. It melted in my mouth. My wife got the ceviche. I only had a bite, but it had great flavor, she really enjoyed it as well. We both got the house mojito. This was one of the best cocktails I've ever had. Perfect balance of acid and sweet, with a hint of tropical fruit and mint"

  • "Hula Grill has good food and service in Whaler's shopping center of Kanapali. Fish dishes can be prepared several ways, and salads are excellent. Very busy and crowded, so make a reservation. Nice Hawaiian guitar music as well"

  • "Been here in 2008, and 2010, both times were delicious, and the menu was terrific. This time (2014) the menu seemed limited. I ordered the special, which had two different fish. One was VERY over cooked, and the other, slightly. The restaurant used to feel gourmet, now it feels like any other chain. Nice view though."

  • "While on vacation, me, my husband and our 6 and 9 year old kids ate at Hula Grill and really enjoyed it. The service was helpful and attentive. The Keiki menu wasn't just everything fried - my kids both got ribs. Definitely recommended if you want great, fresh food and a terrific view!"

  • "My wife and I had a late reservation, we were not able to be seated early, but the bar was fun. The staff made the place fun. Great views of the water and sunset. Seafood was prepared perfectly."

  • "Hula Grill probably is the restaurant with the best view on Ka'anapali Beach! Food was very good but a little overpriced. Overall, first experience was great."

  • "This is our second time eating at Hula Grill on Maui. Both times we selected this restaurant because it has great seafood menu and a great view of the ocean. There is also live entertainment. The food is very good especially the fish entrees."

  • "Beautiful scenic food with outstanding food and service. Its a must visit for Kaanapali Beach! If possible, take advantage of the Chef's tasting at 5:30, then walk down to black rock to view the cliff divers!"

  • "The reviews for this restaurant aren't positive enough. Hula Grill was our choice for last dinner in Maui on a recent vacation. Couldn't have been a better punctuation mark on a great vacation. Reservations aren't needed, but certainly helped us get a table as soon as we showed up (even though we were 30 minutes early). The Hula Grill is located within the Whaler's Village in Kaanapali, and sits right on the beach boardwalk - a great location for a meal after being on the beach, or shopping. Food was fresh and unique - not to mention completely delicious. Our server got busy after we arrived, but drink service never slowed, and the overall service was top notch as there were many others to step in and help. Overall, great experience!"

  • "We had a delicious dinner at the Hula Grill. With an early reservation we had our choice of all menu items. (Our very experienced and knowledgeable waiter told us they sometimes sell out later in the evening.) The setting right on Kaanapali Beach is just beautiful; the live Hawaiian music was heavenly as we sat at our oceanside table. The service was impeccable, the dishes beautifully presented and the food fresh and delicious. The chef's two fish special was glorious. My husband who doesn't love fish really enjoyed his monchongo in Tandoori style. The poke tacos were a splendid appetizer. For dessert we had the Baked Hawaii which is the Hula Grill's pineapple version of baked Alaska. Scrumptious! I HIGHLY recommend the Hula Grill."

  • "The food was delicious and the service was awesome! My wife ordered the Poke Ceviche (highly recommend) and it came with tortilla chips rather than taro as the menu stated. Not really a big deal, but we inquired with our server and she went to check on it. When she came back, she apologized that they were out of taro chips and substituted the tortilla chips as a result. Again not a big deal to us, but here was the great service part...she apologized and insisted that dessert would be complimentary. Even when we told her it was okay, she wouldn't take no for an answer. It just made a great dining experience even better!"

  • "We visited the Hula Grill on a Friday evening for an early dinner in the open air beachfront dining area. They had an early dinner special that included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert for about the price of one dinner entrée - although it did limit the selections a little. We both ordered the special, with differing selections, and truly enjoyed everything we tasted. The portions were perfect for the 3-course meal (at least for normal to light eaters) - we were completely satisfied, but not uncomfortably full. I would recommend this option for a reasonably priced meal in Maui."

  • "Hula Grill is one of multiple Merriman restaurants throughout Hawaii, which are generally good. This one is right on the beach so ambience can't be beat. Service was very good/excellent and food very good, although not outstanding. Price was comparable to other restaurants in the area. We ordered the short rib appetizer which turned out to be slow smoked fat. They took it back immediately and were apologetic, returning with a more appropriate piece of meat. Overall I'd recommend this place"

  • "We've been coming here every time we have visited Maui since our honeymoon 17 years ago. Now our 10 yr old son comes along too and enjoys it just as much as we so. Hawaiian Chili Water that we bring back home in our suitcase always reminds of a wonderful meal and beautiful view from the Hula Grill!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at the Hula Grill. We sat in the sand and were able to kick our shoes off and eat with our toes buried. We we near the stage where a great band was playing and a hula dancer was performing. We were lucky enough to get to see the sun set on Maui, as well. The food was amazing. We had fish tacos, ribs and the fish plate. All of it was extremely good. I really enjoyed the mac slaw. The restaurant was extremely busy so service was a bit slow. As expected with the band so close, it was a bit too noisy to talk while they were performing. After dinner, it was also nice to be able to shop around Whalers Village. Overall, it was a great experience for my entire family."

  • "We had our last dinner in maui at the Hula Grill Restaurant. Like everything in maui it was on the expensive side but we knew that before hand. Our food was very good, our waitress was great and the view was awesome. We have eaten in both the restaurant and the beachside grill and enjoy both."

  • "Hula Grill has this beautiful location on Kaanapali beach with a lovely casual beach atmosphere and the Merriman's reputation behind it. Why then serve really below average clearly preprepared frozen type food? Drinks are touristy expensive watered down versions that we know from other Merriman's restaurants can be really great. This can be a great place - we hope they care enough to work on the food!"

  • "We went to Hula Grill based on a recommendation from a former diner and we weren't disappointed! Everything was delicious, the rib eye was to die for! Only comment I would make, was about the seafood chowder which was delicious, but for $29, I would've liked to see more. Service was outstanding, our waiter was very attentive and friendly. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and could hear the waves crashing. I would definitely go back if I found myself in Maui again!"

  • "We thought we were going to end up at a touristy overated place but Hula Grill ended up being one of our favorite meals on the island. The prices were high but not crazy. The food was excellent and we had the sweetest server. Oh, and the Baked Hawaii dessert was special. "

  • "This restaurant has a bar with live music, which is very complimentary to dining as it was entertaining but not too loud. The hostess was great in re-seating us at a prime table at the oceanside upon our request. We had Ahi Tacos to start that were absolutely delicious. Our other fish dishes, macadamia nut mahi-mahi, and kiawe opah were both delicious. The cocktails were delicious and uniquely flavored. A great find! We will return another visit to Maui. "

  • "We had great service; the waitress was excellent explaining the various options and various types of fish offered; she knew the difference between them which was appreciated. Both of our meals were excellent. I chose options off the tasting menu and my 'other half' had one of their specials which he very much enjoyed. We sat outside watching the people, the families, the water and the sunset. A wonderful dinner for our last evening of our Hawaiian adventure."

  • "This is a hotel/condo restaurant. Busy & noisy. Wife's 2 fish dinner was very good. My bbq pork ribs were just ok. Quality meat, but little flavor. Worth trying this restaurant. "

  • "Unfortunately, we didn't have a water view from our table, nor a view to the entertainment, so we missed out on what we thought were the best attributes of dining at Hula Grill. However, the food was quite good! Tandoori Monchong, Chinese Lamb Chops were very nice. This is not really a foodie place, but if you luck out with the music, attentive servers, view and good food, it makes for a great night out! Although partially owned by Peter Merriman, this is nothing like his own restaurants."

  • "Both the wife & I really enjoyed the fresh catch of the day. Everything was very flavorful. Service was excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable. Even though I know ghis is Hawaii, I still get sticker shock. $106 for dinner for 2 with no drinks. Same thing on mainland about $35-$45."
