A word from Hugo's Restaurant
Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With both tasting menus and à la carte options you can join us for an extravagant feast or a couple of courses.

Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

The bar seating with open kitchen was entertaining, and noting another reviewer the music (reggae) was at the appropriate level and not a concern. The forward and back serving while seated at the bar was also accomplished with care and skill. Cooking is incredibly imaginative and very satisfying. Yes, the price ticket is high for Portland, but not out of line for the high quality of food and service provided."

We sat at the counter in comfy tall chairs overlooking the bustling (but surprisingly quiet) kitchen. There are also cozy booths and window tables. The ambiance is buzzy, sophisticated, and relaxed. The wine list is impressive. Our server suggested several exceptional but modestly-priced wines by the glass, and each one perfectly enhanced our food. The only downside here is Hugo's is 4 hours away from our home!"

The combination of tastes and textures made the local unique foods surprising! We had the tasting menu with wine parings that were perfectly done. The background music was suitable, appropriate, and at the correct volume. This is an improvement over the previous Hugo's."

  • "Most of the seating at Hugo's is at the bar, where you can watch the chefs work. It was very cool watching the extreme care the chefs took with preparing every item, carefully placing garnishes on dishes with tweezers. The chef we sat in front of was very friendly and open to answering questions. The food arrives in multiple courses and on small plates. We were surprised how quickly all of the small plates added up because we were stuffed by the time we left. The waiter was very attentive and friendly and Hugo's had a great drink selection as well. I would highly recommend Hugo's for a special occasion dinner."

  • "Hugo's seems to thrive on creating beautiful tastING plates of unusual ingredients. Even ordering is unique: for a 5 course meal, you choose a no. 1 thru 5 from their menu (or a different combo I can't try to explain here e.g. 1, 1, 3,4,5). In between we were given several free dishes to try (an "amuse bouche" in French as the waiter explained). Everything is pretty much OUT of the ordinary, e.g. "goose barnacle from Portugal" or "duck confit". One of the yummy free dishes (meat skewered in a Thai sauce) turned out to be goose necks. The desserts were equally beautiful, different, and delicious. Wonderful wine & service!! Go and enjoy with an open mind and lots of time -- and expect a big check. Unique & beautiful isn't cheap..."

  • "This was far and away our most disappointing meal in our 5 years of vacationing and eating out in Portland, Maine. The food was mediocre with ambivalent service, given with an extreme attitude of entitlement and the most chilling a/c you've ever felt. In the future we certainly will save our $300 for two and spend it at any of the other Portland, Maine restaurants such as Fore Street, Bodo, Miyake, Caiolas, 555 or Street & Company - all of which we loved! It doesn't deserve to still carry the Hugos name with the new ownership."

  • "This restaurant came well recommended, but even then it managed to surpass expectations. The attention to detail in creating continuity of earthy ambiance was much appreciated. The theme was set by organic items such as wooden tables, slate servicing pieces, rock and leaf wall art and pottery dishes which nicely underscored the land, sea, and vegetable menu. Every dish astonished, but the chief element, such as duck or lamb or octopus, was never disguised, just enhanced. I especially liked that the waiter took the time to explain items on the plate in detail as the courses were served. Amazing place, delightful experience."

Do not order a flavored vodka. We received a gift certificate so we had to go. We were happy we tried it. Overall it was a very good experience. If your palate is not adventurous, this may not be for you. And it is quite expensive but worth it."

  • "The food was very fun and artistic and exciting for us, as we like to consider ourselves foodies. We didn't, however, like the desserts, at all. We also thought the price was a bit high for what we got. The food was fun, but maybe only worth $75 per head. Lastly, we thought the music selection was funny and out of place. It ranged from Frank Sinatra's crooning, to Thriller, to REO Speedwagon. Not fitting for the ambience. Despite this, we had a wonderful anniversary at Hugo's. From the moment we walked in, we were treated as special guests. The hostess had saved us a spot at a booth, because of our anniversary, which was lovely of her. The waiter was fantastic. Actually, everyone that we came in contact with was superb. "

  • "I love the new decor and renovation. I love the new menu selections. I love the service and exciting atmosphere. I do not love the new pre fix and expensive pricing structure as it is now only a "once a year" experience. Won’t work in the winter for Mainer's when the Boston tourist leaves. There is NO parking at Hugo's and the hostess could have cared less when I popped in to ask for help - not a good start to a $400.00 dinner for 2. The food was mostly excellent except that raw duck is raw duck. Don’t try and "school me" when I send it back. Just fix it. The cute little "surprise" plates that come in between courses were fussy and tasteless. Desserts were outstanding. Music was way too loud for the food."

  • "For $90 per person, you deserve to sit at a table, but chances are you will be forced to sit at the bar listening to loud music. That is because Hugo's has renovated and removed all but 6 tables which are not able to be reserved. It's a shame. Food is as inventive as ever but at these prices, you deserve more. We have loved this restaurant but are unlikely to return."

  • "Every single dish and taste was amazing. Who knew a smoked parsnip could be a star? We chose the "lighter" menu tasting with just two courses but we were treated to extras between the courses. They served a red snapper sashimi and a savory churro before our choices were served. After watching dessert prepared in front of me, I had to try the "root cellar" which included sunchoke ice cream. It was all unbelievably delicious and the staff was super attentive. We were hesitant about sitting at the bar but as soon as we sank into the comfortable chairs we were happy. I can't wait to go back."

Out of our 10 dishes (we each had the 5 course tasting menu), only 3 were excellent. Hopefully, in the future the restaurant will simplify its food, as it has been great in the past. Service and wine list excellent. Staff very helpful and pleasant."

  • "Hugos is a true gem in the Portland food sceene! What a treat for the senses! It's a delight to have a such high end donning experience in the Old Port! We had the best seats in the house perches at the end of the bar overlooking the entire open kitchen. From watching meals being plated with delicate care to the unique art and lighting fixtures above the booths, it was a real feast for the eyes as well! The food was spectacular!!!! Each course surpassed the next! Cant't wait for our next visit!"
