A word from Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House - Chicago
After years of searching far and wide for a location to open the follow-up restaurant to the highly successful Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, owners Hugo Ralli and Steve Lombardo found what they were looking for right under their noses. In February of 1997 they launched the seafood companion to the Chicago legend they had created with Gibsons and named it Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House. The restaurant is dedicated to the same principles as its predecessor, unbelievable portions, value and quality coupled with memorable service. Continued

  • "Excellent food. We had the frog legs for an appetizer. I had the steak n cake and my date had the swordfish. Both were delicious. The service was great too."

  • "We always have a great night when we go to Hugo's. This was no exception. We are watching our waistline and Hugo's isas great for that as it is for overeating. I had grilled shrimp that were straight from the Sea of Cortez and they were large and perfectly grilled. A bottle of wine and a salad was excellent. We split a side which is also great. Brian, our server was great. We love the hustle and bustle of the place on a Saturday night. Very Chicago. They always honor your reservation and seat you on time or before."

  • "Everything from the food and service was outstanding! We enjoyed everything about our visit. Was glad we picked this place for our anniversary dinner!"

  • "The presentation of the seafood selections is outstanding! Our service staff was there exactly when we needed them and never in the way. The atmosphere is very friendly and authentic. The design is very smartly casual. Great find and great food!"

  • "Michael was great a server. Spend 3.5 hours just doing tapas and great wine. Everything in the menu was a must try. Must go back ASAP."

  • "Hugos is absolutely our favorite restaurant in Chicago. My wife enjoys the scallops and with them sharing the kitchen with Gibson's, their steaks out this this world"

  • "We were so looking forward to a great meal at a great & fun restaurant. Sadly the waiter seemed as though he really didn't want to be there. Forgot our appetizer... never even brought it up.... it took too long to get our meals we opted to not ask for it.... we had worked hard that day and were really tired.... the crab bisque I had was so salty I couldn't finish it but the soup my partner had and I think it was gumbo was the best she ever had..... go figure.............. first time there but maybe will give it another chance when visiting Chicago again.... restaurant competition is big............ who knows"

  • "I'm not going to say Hugo's was lackluster because I had a good time and always like their food (and service is always great--they really know their stuff!). BUT I will say that there are better, more unique seafood places to try in the city for the same price or less. But don't let that deter you--If you're okay with the standard seafood & Gibson steak fare, you'll have a good meal--I guarantee that. But for how expensive it is, personally, I'd try something else in the area."

  • "The entire dining experience was fantastic. The food is always fresh and tasty. The drinks always hit the spot. The wait staff professional and timely. We will be back again, and again."

  • "All five of us had very good entrees. Bone in rib eye, beef medallions Oscar style, shrimp and a killer Chilean sea bass. King crab spring rolls were superb. Escargot was Spinach side, kind of sad...just spinach, no character. Key Lime pie was OK, should have gone for the Chocolate cake which we remember as outstanding. And if you like blue cheese, their salad dressing was chunk full of real blue cheese chunks"

  • "I had been to Hugo Frog bar 2 times and truly the worst service of any restaurant that I had encountered ! Both times our party had to wait in a crowded noisy bar area for greater than 40 minutes before seated . This place would not honor your reservation time nor do they really care. When my wife went up to ask about when we can be seated , they claimed that we would be next. Then 5 other parties were seated . When I went up the second time, they became sarcastic ! " Do you think that I can do voodoo and make all the people that are waiting disappear so I can get you seated ? " This place is loud and the very expensive. The service is the worst that we had encountered ever. so stay away as there are much better sea food restaurants !"

  • "We sat in the Bar area because we want to listen to the Piano player. We ordered 2 Crab Cakes as an appraiser . They reminded me Crab Cakes from Balt, MD. ..That means they were big and full of Crab meat. Excellent Crab Cakes! Set the mood for the balance of the evening. Great Drinks and Dinner made for a Fantastic Night. Thank You for the experience."

  • "Food and service were both over the top ! the desserts are enormous !"

  • "Hugo's is ok. Very large portions of good enough food, but definitely not worth the exorbitant prices. Our waiter was clearly bored with his job, brought us the wrong appetizers and brought me the wrong entree. There are too many great restaurants in Chicago to settle for this one."

  • "We've eaten at Hugo's three or four times when visiting Chicago for business, and it's reliably good. The waiters (all men) are extremely attentive and professional, the service is amazing. They specialize in seafood and there's a great variety of shellfish and fresh fish, but there are also steak and chicken choices. The entrees can get pricey and don't include side dishes but there are also good salads, appetizers and a short list of "local favorites" that include fish and chips and rotisserie chicken if you're not on an expense account. There's basically something for everyone and the combination of ambience, service and food is what we enjoy and why we keep coming back."

  • "Great service, great food and we did not have to yell at eachother to be heard. They just do what they do very well and we enjoyed every minute. I do wish they could minimize the few asking for handouts when you leave."

  • "This was a special occasion celebrating my daughters 1st H.S semester being on the Deans List. She also wanted to try Lobster for the first time. We were seated soon after arriving at a great table up front. The waiter was warm and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu and he mention my note from the reservation about my daughter. He started things out with a glass of bubbly for me and a sprit in a flute glass for my kid, then he proceeded to explained a lot that helped us make the right choices from the start all the way through dessert. The lobster was presented well so that it didn't freak my daughter out. Overall a great time had by all"

  • "I have been to this place many times. I was a little shocked that the food was more normal and not as special as I was used to. The bone-in filet was okay had that more marble than I was expecting for that cut of meat. The lobster was a little overcooked and bland. It wasn't bad but it wasn't phenomenal as I would expect from restaurant of this caliber. There are much better restaurants of this caliber to choose from."

  • "My wife and I had an enjoyable meal. The food and service were both very good. No complaints whatsoever. It feels to me like a place you would go on a business trip with the gang after a long day more that a place to take my wife. She certainly felt that way too. I would recommend it without reservation to seafood lovers."

  • "My wife and I dined at Hugo's after attending the Celtic Women show at the Chicago Theatre. We would normally make reservations at Gibson's but reservations were not available primarily due to my late attempt. Hugo's was a great experience and my wife prefers fish and it's steak for me so it was a great fit. Great food, service atmosphere and attitudes made for a great evening."

  • "We took a friend to Hugo's Frog Bar to celebrate her birthday. Even thought we arrived about ten minutes late for our reservation, we were promptly seated and greeted by our server. Even though the place was packed on a Sunday night, we were well cared for and our server couldn't have been more helpful in explaining the nightly specials and options. The food was delicious, and my wife -- who is very particular about getting the right temperature for her steak, just a bit on the rare side of medium rare -- was impressed. A special birthday dessert was brought out for our friend and we all left the restaurant feeling happy, well-fed...and realizing that we'd better get to the gym pronto to offset all the calories we'd just consumed!"

  • "we had a great time! Shannon rovers playing bag pipes and drums marched in. as it was st. paddy's day. dinner was very good and our waiter was outstanding. the lounge singer in the bar had a beautiful voice."

  • "I definitely would return to try more dishes. The fresh catch offers were phenomenal. Considering how busy a Saturday evening can get, the service was very desirable."

  • "This is (along with Gibson's next door) by far my favorite spot for a good steak - the Chicago Cut is a bone-in ribeye and it is in my opinion the best steak in the city. With just us and one other couple waiting for tables, the front desk staff 'forgot' about us and failed to seat us until I went back 45 minutes later and asked how long it be. They were embarrassed (as they should be) but not terribly apologetic, but I cannot help wonder what the staff thought that we were doing there, if not waiting for a table? We were seated less than 10 ft from them for 45 minutes and they never once considered that we might be waiting for a table?"

  • "Another delightful dining experience with Greg and John at the bar. Both of our steaks were grilled to perfection! Service was superb. See you soon."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Very good food but ridiculous portion sizes. I wish the server had warned us. It was at least 2 and maybe 3x too big for a normal appetite. I gave the waitress a 2 rating but that was because she didn't warn us. Otherwise the gal was very good. The crab cakes and white fish were delicious!"

  • "We were running a bit late and they accommodated us and moved our reservation. Seating was immediate when we arrive. Service was typically attentive and the seafood exceptional. My wife's spare ribs were just ok but that's not really a standard item there. We shared the chocolate mousse pie for dessert and it could have fed 6. Absolutely delicious."

  • "We had a terrible experience...terrible service, orders came out 75% wrong. The food was terrible. We were sat at the back of the restaurant and just after we were settled in, an obnoxious and very loud table of 10 were seated next to us...very annoying. There are so many wonderful restaurants in Chicago...there's no reason to return to this one."

  • "From decor to food quality and preparation to cocktails, Hugo's is exceptional. With the bravado of Gibson's, it is a go-to spot for any occasion."

  • "Went here based on reviews online and a few blocks from our hotel. Reservation weekday was not a problem. Bread before dinner was fine. Drinks were fine. Oysters rockefeller appetizer shared with wife we both liked. Soup which came with entrees was ok. My entree-striped bass 39.50-I was expecting something really good-instead it was overcooked, dry and average flavor. My wife's entree-chilean sea bass 39.50-it was not supposed to be sushi but it was so undercooked she could not eat it. We did not have desert. We will not go to Hugo's again. There are too many other good restaurants in Chicago."
