A word from Howells & Hood
One of the best restaurants in Chicago, in the heart of the Mag Mile. Nestled at the base of the legendary Tribune Tower, this stunning restaurant is a vibrant addition to one of Chicago’s most beloved and recognizable skyscrapers. Incorporating signature Tribune elements into our design, such as the etched travertine that came over from Italy, Howells & Hood pays homage to John Howells & Raymond Hood, architects of the Neo Gothic landmark. With a unique and refined culinary program, the largest draft beer selection in Chicago, and impressive staff, Howells & Hood is a magnificent compliment to Michigan Avenue.

Please note, we do not accept reservations for our patio tables. We will do our best to accommodate outdoor seating requests upon arrival. We look forward to serving you!

We were told to try the brunch. We were seated away from buffet and only a few folks there. Servers were not attentive. More of a bar than a restaurant in my opinion. Great beer selection.

We came in around 3:30pm. They had given our reservation to someone else but then told us it was in an hour? They seated us right away but then we waited over 25 mins before a hostess came to give us water. It took 5 mins to return with water and then she, not our waiter, took a beer order for us. After 10 mins of waiting for beers we said "nevermind" and left. While they boast 114 beers on tap we called looking for a specific beer and was told they have 3 of them only to find out they had 0. I won't return.

I'm from out of town so I was shocked at A) how huge this place was, and B) how noisy and packed it was. Luckily we had made our reservations through OpenTable so we were seated immediately. I think locally it's known for being busy. It's in a BEAUTIFUL building and had a large outdoor seating area. I had the grilled geese sandwich which was very similar to a breakfast sandwich due to the egg. It was quite good but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend got the H&H burger, which he loved and finished quickly. My dinner companions got the suckling pig (meat was good but the wild rice was bland she said) and fish I can't remember the name of. There were endless beer options, which was nice. The spinach and artichoke dip was excellent.

I read reviews prior to going, but thought we'd give it a try anyway. Ratings were mostly true . . . mediocre food, high priced cocktails, slow service (most likely due to size of venue and lots going on, not the server). It's a really cool venue, and the patio alone makes it a worthwhile stop in nice weather. Based on my two dining experiences there, I'll probably only go back for a cocktail on the patio.

Food was okay. Waiter was terrible. He forgot drink orders repeatedly, within first ten minutes spilt red wine all over a co worker of mine and had to constantly be reminded to clear off the table. I do not think I will ever be coming back and would not recommend to any of my friends. For the size of our party and cost of a new suit I would have thought they would have been a bit more generous with the comp on the bill. I will be drafting a letter to them.

Met up with out-of-town friends here because it was near to them. The food was nothing special, despite some pretentious ingredients/combos. The food took FOREVER and was on par with Chili's or TGIFridays, but more expensive. Do yourself a favor and walk across Michigan Ave to Purple Pig or just a few doors down to Bandera instead.

I ventured to Howell's and Hood on a beautiful fall evening. We had researched restaurants we hadn't yet experienced (my 14th trip to Chicago). We had a reservation, but asked if we could wait to eat outside. We were able to do that, but found the gentleman at the counter to be a bit on the arrogant side which was a "turn off" for my experience. Other than that, it was great food, great atmosphere.

I've been here quite a few times. I love the outdoor space, for which they don't take reservations. Great for happy hour and dinner after work, in an excellent location! Inside, it's very noisy. Service is pretty good, but depends on the server. Sunday brunch is excellent. The food I had this time was just OK. I ordered the burger, which I've loved in the past. But this time, the burger and fries were just OK.

This was my first time at Howells & Hood. I thought the location was great. Our waiter was definitely busy and a little hard to get his attention. There was also a giant spider web that was a little distracting. The had a large menu- lots to choose from. Beer flights, cocktails, wine etc. Great lighting. PLENTY of space! I liked the atmosphere/décor. I would come back to try food... just did drinks this time. The rewards program is great too.

This place has some really creative sandwiches. I love the grilled cheese. Lots of beers on tap. We shared an appetizer of little hotdogs wrapped in hash browns with a mustard relish. Creative and tasty. The patio is the only place I have eaten so far and it is nice, with lots of plants (some a little overgrown late in the summer). The booths are fairly comfortable. Nice outdoor space!

Found this gem of a place on a Saturday when we were looking for college football...the beer list is the best I've seen in a while. Had some light bites that were great, but the atmosphere and Sunday Brunch menu is what brought us back the next day! The Brunch is out of this world...so many creative dishes from savory to sweet - with carving stations, omelette stations, cheese board and charcuterie. Featured drinks on the day of the Bears game were excellent! Highly recommend - especially on game days!!!

I was warned that the service here is spotty, but our waitress was a total rockstar. Awesome attitude, really knew the menu, checked in on us at all the right times and really made our experience over the top. Definite recommend for beer lovers, outdoor patio-goers, and foodies.

It's no surprise Howells and Hood is one of the top restaurants in Chicago. The location is superb and there are not many locations in the city that have an outdoor dining setting that match this. The overall design of the restaurant/bar is well appointed and appealing, the food and service was excellent and the draft beer selection is unbeatable, with 90+ craft beers on tap at both the inside and outside bar. I highly recommend going there if you have not already!

The food was amazing - we ordered the Chicago Hot Dogs and Artichoke Dip. However, my mom and I both ordered Bloody Mary's and couldn't drink them because they were so salty. Our waiter took them back and had them remade and they still were almost undrinkable which was disappointing given the price. Other than that the place was great!

Beautiful Chicago location and outdoor patio is awesome. You feel like you're in the middle of the city! Beer selection is huge! Full and half size glasses makes sampling new beers easy and affordable! Food options are just OK. We tried the grilled cheese with pork belly and the bread was overwhelming. The smoked brisket was unique with horseradish, but the dressing couldn't overcome the lack of flavor in the meat. I recommend for a fun drinks place, but not for a meal.

I was looking for a lunch spot by my work, and remembered hearing about this place. I sat outside, which has this really nice courtyard and garden next to it. Whole menu looked delicious. Kale salad was amazing and large enough that I had leftovers for dinner. Cookies and Milk dessert was good, just a little too sweet and heavy to finish by myself. We dined at Howells & Hood after a river boat ride. It's location at the base of the Tribune Tower is fantastic and convenient for many downtown outings. There's nothing like it in the vicinity. We were hoping for an outdoor table but all they had for our party of 8 was a long "communal" type table that we were not interested in. Instead, they sat us indoors at a round table right next to the window, so it felt like "outside" but quieter and with a/c on a hot, muggy day so it really worked out for the best! The menu is extensive for beer/wine/cocktails, but we're not a drinking crowd. The food menu was more limited, but everyone in our group found something they liked. We will dine here again!

I am not big into sending food back, i have seen too many shows and my son in law is a chef and has told me of incidents that he has seen when people complain so i just deal with what is served. I am glad that my wife enjoyed her dish but i was less than impressed.
