A word from Howells & Hood
One of the best restaurants in Chicago, in the heart of the Mag Mile. Nestled at the base of the legendary Tribune Tower, this stunning restaurant is a vibrant addition to one of Chicago’s most beloved and recognizable skyscrapers. Incorporating signature Tribune elements into our design, such as the etched travertine that came over from Italy, Howells & Hood pays homage to John Howells & Raymond Hood, architects of the Neo Gothic landmark. With a unique and refined culinary program, the largest draft beer selection in Chicago, and impressive staff, Howells & Hood is a magnificent compliment to Michigan Avenue.

Please note, we do not accept reservations for our patio tables. We will do our best to accommodate outdoor seating requests upon arrival. We look forward to serving you!

  • "This is a great spot to stop and enjoy one or two of the many great beers that they have on tap.. The food was very good and the service by our waitress was outstanding. Very friendly and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this to all visiting Chicago."

  • "We've attended many brunches and found this one to be outstanding. The choice and quality of food was excellent."

  • "I was excited to take out of town guests here. I thought the big patio would be a great place to enjoy Sunday brunch. The patio was great, but the service couldn't have been worse. From the host, to our waiter, to the other staff who dodged our glances as we searched for the buffet, I couldn't have been less impressed."

  • "The charcuterie plate and wings were good. The H & H burger was just so so. Good beer selection."

  • "Wide selection of beer and interesting burgers. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day but my burger wasn't as warm as it could have been and the fries were an uninspiring lukewarm. Our server seemed to be annoyed that we took too long to order but this was a lunch with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and we just playing catch up. Loved the outdoor patio. I'll try them again. Like I said, it may have just been a bad day.No one is perfect"

  • "Walking down Michigan Ave, and found this gem while on Open Table. Extremely happy with the service and the food was fantastic. I will be visiting again here soon!"

  • "Really enjoyed the food and cocktails at Howell's & Hood. Very vibrant bar and restaurant scene. Great patio bar and dining. Very busy place, so I would not recommend this restaurant if you are on a schedule. So busy and people don't seem to leave that even with a reservation you'll find yourself waiting - especially if you want to sit outside."

  • "Nice outdoor dining location after taking morning Chicago River cruise. Arrived just prior to noon so outdoor dining available on perfect weather day. By 12:15 the place was packed for outdoor dining so get there early. No reservations taken for patio dining. Service was good and food / portions were great. Added bonus of Blue Angels practice for Air Show!"

  • "The food, atmosphere, beer list, location, etc is all great, but holy cow is this place LOUD! Add some sound absorbing materials, folks."

  • "We came back for a Sunday brunch and didn't regret it. It's a little pricey, but the buffet options are outstanding."

  • "Blues brunch I thought would be an amazing experience-boy was I wrong?! It was merely a buffet in the back w/blues music only in that particular room. No one could hear it!:( There were NO tables up sit down in there-not to mention the food was NOT that great!:( Totally dissapointed & had higher hopes! Thought it was a great place-hugely let down & wouldn't go again! Btw-hostess totally RUDE! Basically she seated us w/a BIG attitude, threw the menus down at us & awful experience!!:("

  • "We had a great experience at Howells and Hood. We had asked for an outdoor table if possible. We had only a 5 minute wait during which time we could stroll on the plaza until we received a text that our table was ready. The patio area is set a distance from Mich. Ave. so there was no traffic noise. The extensive landscaping provides a shaded lovely area. Our server was very knowlegeable, helpful and friendly. The Beer list is extensive - something for all. The menu was a fun menu of many choices with something for everyone. A great find in Chicago."

  • "We love the outside dining area here! The beautiful plantings and flowers make for a wonderful surrounding to enjoy a relaxing fabulous lunch outside. Our server Emily was super friendly and fun, as well as efficient. The food at Howells & Hood is always perfection and presented beautifully be it the mussels, burgers, chicken club, etc. Enjoy!"

  • "Michigan ave restaurant that clearly knows it's always going to be busy. Server was argumentative and super awkward-- too bad they don't recognize that some people live in the area and aren't just tourists looking for a michigan ave place to drink."

  • "Great outdoor patio with the added bonus if being dog friendly. Some of my favorite items (duck salad, lobster roll) were removed from the menu. Hope that they are put back on."

  • "We brought a client here for dinner and have a lovely outdoor patio. Our service was terribly slow which is something you don't want at a work dinner. I understand that it was during happy hour time and that a lot of people like to sip on their beverages and relax after a work day, but when no additional drinks were being ordered and everyone was finished with their meal, it's time to bring the check!"

  • "Selected this restaurant based on an article seen on TV and being from Chicago (wanted to support the local businesses). Made a reservation for 7 people. Ordered appetizers to start--waitress never brought us plates or utensils for the food. Had to go take them from another table. Food was underwhelming (not a wide selection to choose from). The location is great--right on Michigan Ave but wasn't impressed with the overall experience."

  • "Great location just off of Michigan Avenue. Tends to draw a more upscale crowd versus the normal brew pub. Good for a business get together or dinner. Tends to get crowded on the usual date nights and it's a bit noisy, but service and food are great."

  • "Howells and Hood is exactly what it claims to be; a great bar with excellent bar food. My wife and I were seated outside. We had a total of five drinks during our visit; 4 beers and one mixed drink. All were outstanding. The service was very good with our server checking on us regularly. The food was decent for a bar. This place is not fine dining but had a wide range of options. We were there 2 1/2 hours and enjoyed the leisurely pace. Have been there for Sunday brunch and enjoyed that too. We will return again, hopefully for the outdoor dining."

  • "It's not the best option for brunch, but a very good one if you're in the mood to spend $30/person. The buffet is delicious & has lots of choices, but it only has the one buffet option. It would be nice to have a breakfast menu. Come with a big appetite!"

  • "Great place to get a beer and sit outside. The beer menu is huge and that is what they are largely known for. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend much on the menu. Everything sounds good but there are a few "unique" ingredients in each dish which kind of ruin it. I wouldn't recommend a specialty drink either. I tried the Howells Hood - you would think that the signature drink would be a safe bet but there was a strange liquor in it which ruined the whole flavor. After asking the waiter to bring a glass of wine instead he insisted on "tweaking" the drink to make it better. Basically they just added more grapefruit juice to hide the flavor of the vanilla-citrus liquor. When I'm paying $13 for a drink I do not want more juice."

  • "This is the place to go in the summer for a burger and a beer. ....with a selection of what seems to be 100 different beers! The burgers are on brioche and the fries are parsley salted and crispy. Staff is very attentive and friendly. We ate inside, where it is a bit noisy, but if you're a group, you blend in. Inside may not be best for a quiet meal as it is very energetic. Outdoor dining is a plus in the city and it is away from the street so you don't have to deal with traffic noise or pollution."

  • "On our girl's night out, the 6 of us really enjoyed ourselves. The food was excellent & our waiter very accommodating. We were inside at a nice round table that facilitated our discussion on our book from book club. Although it was lovely outside, it would have been a lot noisier."

  • "When we arrived we had an option of in or outdoor. My party chose to be seated inside. We were greeted immediately by the wait staff and well taken care of by our waiter. We were not hurried and enjoyed the time we had for our visit. I might add that this was not our first visit to this establishment and we look forward to returning. Everything was excellent."

  • "If you really love and know beer, you'll love Howell and Hoods. There are pages of beers and wines to choose from. It can be a more than a little intimidating for the casual beer drinker although the servers are quick with recommendations. In fact there are so many drink selections, it can seem like food is an afterthought. I'm happy to say it's not. We had a carnitas appetizer which was very flavorable and awesome homemade pork rinds. The burger and pulled pork entrees were also good. Service was pleasant but a bit leisurely for my taste. Overall a good experience and a place I'd return to."

  • "Arrived 10 minutes before Open Table reservation, dismissed then ignored by hostess. When I asked a different young fellow we were seated immediately! Asked THREE times, from waitress and wait staff for napkin and utensils. Overall service, very poor, noise level way to high, forget about having a conversation, but the food is good, beet salad, brisket and burger sandwich's good taste, good value. Would not recommend despite great location. Will not return."

  • "Lots of background noise b/c there is not much to absorb sound. The wait staff person for the table on the other of the banquette was nearly shouting to be heard - not fun for us Smoked pork and brisket were both delicious sandwiches and the beet salad is killer!"

  • "We went for our usual date night. It was our first time there and the food was really good!. I had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and my husband had the fish tacos. Very delicious! I will be back to try other foods but I will take the kids ages 8 & 12 they would enjoy that."

  • "We came here and were less than impressed with the service. The waiter was too busy to handle tables. We were turned down by a busy bus boy for removing empty plates. And our water was NEVER refilled during the entire hour that we were there! And perhaps the kitchen had an off night, but the fish tacos were disgusting and completely inedible. I could not eat them and had to order something else, yet they were not removed from our tab. (We tipped accordingly on our $100+ midweek dinner bill for 2 and wrote a note.) My dining companion had a sandwich which was equally unimpressive. (The fries were good.) Verdict? H&H is good for drinks, never go for the food."

  • "Bottleneck Management owns a bunch of bars but bringing in Chef Scott Walton for Howells & Hood has paid off in spades with elevating the food. Signature dishes like lamb meatballs and a really strong housemade charcuterie program (beef heart pastrami, lamb merguez sausage with harissa and fruit chutney couscous) will make this a carnivore's heaven. The heavier meat dishes are perfect for pairing with the hundreds of beers on tap. There are definitely lighter composed dishes too – from baby kale salad with a fried egg (runny yolk intact) and grapefruit to whole roasted trout with miso red quinoa and poached peaches – so there's something for every taste at a reasonable price point. Also, best patio in Chicago."
