  • "We love the food at House of Tricks and the ambiance of the old house makes it a unique place to bring friends. Best Tuna Melt in the Universe. We also like to support family owned (not chain) businesses. We brought friends from Florida who own a huge restaurant supply business and they loved it. Believe me, they have restaurant experience."

  • "We visited for lunch on Saturday and had a lovely table indoors. The restoration of these historic homes is faithful without being dated and the artworks on the walls are outstanding, worth walking through the buildings to see. Our meals were creative and so tasty! I appreciate their super fresh ingredients and terrific food pairings."

  • "House of Tricks is one of my all time favorite restaurants. The food is superb and the service is excellent."

  • "Had an early dinner because we were going to see "Jersey Boys". They were sensitive to our time restraints. Offered a special on a wine we liked, which was excellent. Food was excellent. My husband said his beef tenderloin was the best he's ever had."

  • "I have been many times and always look forward to it. The food is exceptional and it's close to the theaters. It's a cute little old house with old place settings (but nice)."

  • "I have been eating here for years and chose it for our 28th wedding anniversary dinner this past week. The food was a disappointment. The cheese plate had burnt bread, the cheese did not taste very good, especially in a pool of sauce. The salad was fine. My husband said his serving was too little for his meal. It was a disappointment and I may not return. Given that it was a cheese plate for my meal, I was rather surprised it could be that bad! More variety of cheeses, in smaller pieces, crackers would work fine and perhaps put the sauce in a small bowl in case it is not wanted, rather than ruin the cheese with it. My brother in law is a professional chef and would have done a much better job."

  • "Had brunch on Saturday and food was excellent. I selected the quiche and soup with fresh fruit and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. Close quarters inside so conversations tend to overlap . Great service."

  • "This restaurant is so unique and full of character. The food and wine options are amazing. I hadn't been here for a few years and was so happy that it was as great as I had remembered it. Amazing!"

  • "From the momet we entered The House Of Tricks we knew we found a gem! The food was amazing, and truly the Muessels will spoil you for life! We have enjoyed nothing their equal; the portion is so generous my husband made it his meal! I would also recommend the Salmon, and the Brussel sprouts perfection! Our waitress, Naomi, was the treat of the night. She had such positive energy, made excellent recommendations, and perfect timing! She made our dining experience memorable!"

  • "I have been coming to House of Tricks since they opened for business in the late 1980's. It is a very rare occasion for the food to disappoint. I have loved their garlicky Ceaser salad for years but the dressing tasted a little off this time. However the special of the day, a pork belly and caramelized onion stuffed chicken was the bomb. Amazing combination of favors assisted by a peach Bellini gastrique. The salted caramel apple bread pudding was moist and yummy. Service was attentive and waiter very well informed. Because of the heat we choice to eat inside which is never a good decision because of the cramped space. The beautiful patio is where you need to be to best appreciate House of Tricks."

  • "I ve been to the house of tricks several times and ive been impressed before, but for some reason i wasnt impressed this time. I took my boyfriend for dinner, Ive been talking about this restaurant for months and now that we finally went, it wasnt that great. I loved the mussels, Fish of the day was extremely salty, short ribs were ok and the chocolate cake was dry and nothing special about it. I had this cake before and I remember that it was better last time I had it."

  • "I love Tricks ....and I needed a good spot for a first date in the Tempe area and they did not disappoint. I had the Mediterranean platter this time and a few glasses of wine - the hummus was some of the best I've ever had. My only complaint was that the main hostess seemed a little frigid....but maybe she was having a bad day. Our waiter was pretty awesome - he could tell we weren't in a hurry - checked on us but gave us some space."

  • "House of tricks never disappoints. The food is outstanding and the presentation is artful. The staff does most everything in their power to make you content, happy and satisfied. The setting is great. If you are indoors in one of the old houses or outside on their extensive patio you have the sense that the whole staff cares about you. No matter where you sit you can be guaranteed that your experience will be outstanding. Must have: the bread pudding. Short ribs melt in your mouth. Salmon is to die for!"

  • "House of tricks is nestled in between all the hustle and bustle of ASU and downtown Tempe, and offers a sense of peace and tranquility. Sitting outside under the trees dressed in white lights made for a magical experience. Be aware that during some seasons the trees may offer their buds to you in the form of sprinkles in your drinks or on your food. The service was terrific-very friendly, attentive, and knowledgable. The food was full of flavor-fresh ingredients, mouthwatering. The mixed drinks were on the stronger side but what's the point of a drink if it doesn't have a little kick? The list of house made concoctions provided many options to choose from. Great wine selection for those who are interested. Highly recommend!"

  • "You can always count on a great meal at House of Tricks. I especially like eating there when the weather is nice so that we can eat on the patio. The raspberry tea is a favorite. The chef changes the menu often which makes it a new adventure every time we dine there. Highly recommend!"

  • "I got the Salmon and it was delicious! If you're really wanting to have a quieter experience, eat outside. Inside can get a little loud because of the size restraints of beings house. Other than that you'll be hard-pressed to have anything to complain about. "

  • "We happened on to this little find and have loved it ever since. We are always happy with our service, food, & atmosphere. The food choices are always unique and worth trying and the service has been consistent every time we have been to the restaurant. "

  • "We were greeted by a friendly hostess, who seated us immediately. Approaching the table, she noticed a dirty customer napkin on floor and apologized. I proceeded to sit on a wobbly chair, which I immediately traded out with a more sturdy one. The view was nice, over-looking the garden area, until my wife noticed how dirty the windows were. The server continually referred to his notes, perhaps he's new or lacking confidence? He was polite, but not particularly engaging. The bread was good, the soup de jour was excellent, but my Caesar salad was dry & under-dressed. My wife's salmon was over-cooked and very dry. My lamb rack was cooked unevenly. Drink prices were reasonable, but food portions were small. Poor execution overall & OVERPRICED! "

  • "House of Tricks has been a favorite of mine for more than 10 years. Their is a ton of flavor and just the right portion. Never has the wine, food or service disappointed me or any guests I have brought. Including my friends from Italy and France. They have always been happy and asked to go again on their next visit. Keep it up! Yummy!"

  • "Needed to find a place close to where my lunch partner was staying, and found House of Tricks on Open Table, since I live in NE Phoenix. Neither of us were disappointed! We had great service, were able to make food choices from an interesting menu, and sit outside, under a canopy of trees. The food was delicious, and I will definitely return! "

  • "Although we had reservations - we had to wait 15 minutes or more. The waitress said she'd be back with straws etc - but I think was pretty busy. I prefer their menu of years ago - simplier. The had an awesome turkey waldorf salad. Now they even try to fancy up a PBJ. Too much odd additions to any of the menu items. Kiss - KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID!"

  • "$150 w tip for two. Three courses (Appetizer, salad and main each), one glass of wine. Good value for the price. Nice balanced dishes, very nice presentation. Rack of lamb done perfectly. Scallop starter was very good. Desserts looked nice, but trying to avoid carbs! ;)"

  • "We were in town for our sons graduation from ASU. I found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. The food was very good, and the outside dining was nice because it was warm out. It's close to the University so we walked after the ceremony. We will go back, when visiting Tempe again."

  • "A friend and I had lunch there last week. The food was excellent but the service slow -- mainly because it was graduation day and lots of parents and students were there. Our waiter was friendly and helpful, but overworked on that busy day. But the food was well worth the wait."

  • "House of Tricks has a reputation of fine dining and lovely surroundings. They exceeded all our expectations. We celebrated our son's graduation there and it was the perfect place for any special occasion. The outdoor dining is so shaded, and lovely, it did not feel like Tempe or AZ for that matter, but could have been easily California for all the flowers and vegetation. The food was exquisite, from the rack of lamb, to the short ribs, as well as the brussell sprout salad. The desserts were divine, not too rich but definitely had the "wow" factor. My new favorite place for when you need that extra special evening. Oh, to be able to eat there every day - heaven!!"

  • "Second time here first was Vday. Really was impressed with the whole package so rebooking for moms lbrunch was a no brainer. Arrived 30 minutes early and were seated promptly. Drink order and fresh bread was served within 10 minutes. Things slowed a bit after that. Another 15 minutes passed before our brunch order was taken and another 20 before 1st course was served. 40 minutes later entrees were served a bit cold but still delicious. Waitress was hit and miss with drink refills but offered a complimentary drink for the delays. Decided to take dessert to go after a 2.5 hour stay. Would decide to dine here again as this was first attempt at this menu. "

  • "This is our second time for the Mother's Day Brunch; we've been here many times for lunch. I'm usually quite pleased with the welcoming atmosphere from the host; not today. The host didn't greet us, the table for our reservation was not ready, nor did she apologize for the wait. She just seemed overwhelmed that day. She took a potential 5 stars for service down to 3. Also for the first time I received a subpar dish, the bison carne was rather dry, stringy and tough; that cost one star on the ratings. But the appetizer and desert were fabulous and the other guests entrees were great! So...besides those two complaints, everything else was pretty good."
