Getting there

  • Cross Street: Mill Avenue and University Drive
  • Public Transit: House of Tricks is located 2 short blocks from the Veteran"s Way Metro Light Rail stop. Just cross Fifth Street at Forest Avenue and head south to Seventh Street. Turn right on Seventh, and we are on your right. The Veteran's Way station is also the home of the Tempe Transportation Center and the hub of public transportation in Tempe.

  • "The garden patio at House of Tricks is lush and well shaded, making it a perfect spot for an outdoor lunch on a beautiful Arizona spring day. The restaurant is located in a historic house, and co-workers and I sat on the open porch and it was lovely. I ordered the Albacore Tuna Melt and it came with a side salad. It came on grilled sourdough with tomatoes and bacon. Very yummy. My co-workers are all men and they LOVED the food. There was a green bean salad in a mustard sauce that drew rave reviews around the table. Entrees ranged from $9 to $13 on average and I believe it was well worth the money to enjoy this kind of ambiance."

  • "We were both celebrating Birthday's (and they knew). The atmosphere was nice, had a great table outside & didn't feel like we were having conversations with others. The sourdough bread could've been great if it was warmed, especially if we could have spread the rock hard lemon butter on it. We ordered a starter to split of mussels, they had a great sauce but mussels themselves were tiny. Finally got our bread plates with the starter which was a good thing because we needed something to put the mussels on (a bowl to hold sauce would have been less messy). DO NOT order steak, they have no knowledge to prepare. For our Birthday, they put two candles on an empty saucer (SERIOUSLY? Spent $190 with a tip and they can't spring for dessert?"

Our server was a little slow in clearing the table between courses and in providing drink re-fills and a desert menu. She didn't seem to pay close attention to our table. Good experience. We'll return again when we're on this side of town."

  • "We had been to House of Tricks several other years on our annual AZ vacation and were anxious to go again. It was about March 22 and the weather was beautiful for us northerners so we sat outside -- the best part. Food was good. Our server was not very helpful. I had to ask him what was the soup du jour as he didn't offer it, just jumped to wanting to take our order. Later, I overheard a server at another table mention they had a special dessert that night. Lo and behold we had to ask our server what it was as he didn't tell us, just left the dessert menus. I expect better service from a restaurant like this."

  • "Took a friend for the first time and she raved about her daily special lunch which had a Mexican modern flair and oh so tasty. The spring day helped with the ambiance in this shaded patio. I was surprised to see so many men dining together so it's no ladies luncheon only place. House of Tricks goes out of their way to be creative with blending of different ethnic spices. They are creative but not so egotistical as to be so cute for their own good which I think is what is turning people off on some of these "revamped menu" restaurants who have forgotten about the customer. House of Tricks aims to please in great food and service."

  • "So much to write, so little room. Will be concise. Fish, very good. Pork belly, excellent. Short ribs, very good, but fairly fatty. Rack of Lamb, not worth the money...almost all fat. Have had much better Creme brulee. It was not memorable, other than to say I would not get it again. Not bad, but not that good. Server was informative, but busy....not his fault, he did what he could. Setting outside was wonderful, and not loud...as most outdoor venues are. It was a pricey evening...and a nice evening. I will say that I have had better food...the setting does help to tip the scale."

  • "I work at a hotel bar in downtown Tempe and I we (the main bartenders, which I am not, and myself) recommend the House of Tricks all the time to guests staying at our hotel. If a person asks me what a good place to go in Tempe is the House of Tricks is at the top of my list, and only by merit of its reputation until the other night. It was mine and my girlfriend's second anniversary so I took her to the House of Tricks. Not only were the food and drink and service phenomenal but the ambiance of the patio, the excellent location in tempe providing both the view of mill and the quite of the late night not-quite-mill district. We had an excellent time and I will continue to recommend the House of Tricks whenever I am able."

  • "We have been to Tricks for dinner and enjoyed it throughly but decided to meet friends for lunch. The food was fabulous with a great menu. The setting, on the patio, almost reminicent of a California home. Albeit with tons of tables on the patio. It's covered with shade trees and they tend to mask the sounds of the city (Tempe) even though you are right in the middle. Our waitress was great she noticed when we needed something but left us alone to talk as long as we wanted."

  • "House of Tricks is a real gem for lunch. The menu is varied - something for all tastes and diets. It is inventive and the presentations are well thought out and beautiful. There are some items that are favorites. We love their salmon salad which is delicious. Nicely grilled salmon on a polenta cake over greens with avocado and other goodies. The reuben is excellent. Their appetizers are beautifully presented and good for sharing - the cheese & fruit plate or hummus plate are great. Usually the service is attentive. This time our waiter seemed to be distracted despite the fact that the restaurant was empty due to our late lunch, but usually it is also outstanding."

  • "This is a great restaurant, and the servers and kitchen are really on top of everything. Only regular issue is doing a reservation by phone, so I am glad to use open table. Called from the car a couple of times and the female on the phone says no tables available till after 9pm. Looked on open table and it said res was available but could not complete with mobile app. Called back told her open table showed openings, she said sorry nothing available. Went to computer and made reservation with open table no issue. At dinner restaurant was only 1/2 to 2/3 full from 5:30 to 8:00pm. This is second time for this. Tried fig infused bourbon, pretty good. Ate lamb shank, broiled salmon, chicken salad all were fine. Nice wine selection."

  • "We read such great reviews, and wanted to try this restaurant based on the food and the description of the outdoor patio. The food was good, but our service was poor. She took our order, didn't ask if I wanted to order a drink, then left us. When someone else dropped off our food, I ordered a glass of wine from that person. Our waitress stopped back once, then I had to find her inside the building (we sat ourside) to ask for our check. I'd like to try it again - maybe it was just an off night."

Seating in the bar offers a more lively experience, while sitting out on the patio offers a quiet, beautiful dining experience. Because my husband and I last visited the restaurant for our 20th anniversary, we chose a table for two that was somewhat secluded for a more intimate dining experience. The food was delightful and our waitress was pleasant."
