Diner Reviews
  • "We have been going here for 30+ years. Exceptional every time."

  • "Prime Rib at it's best. The place to go if you love prime rib perfectly prepared. Side dishes come with the entree and in healthy portions, as with the beef. It's packed so making reservations well in advance of your visit is a must. This place is not to be missed and service is enthusiastic and good. "

  • "We've been coming here for many years. I've only been disappointed a time or two in all those years due to an especially busy night and feeling that we were crammed into a small space - hot and confining. The secret is, make your reservations weeks in advance and I suggest dining early before the big dinner crowd arrives. I've never been disappointed with the food or the service - always right on point . "

  • "Have a great time at House of Prime Rib that Thursday night. Our waiter is great and very friendly. Always come by to check on us see if we need anything else. Food as always BEST prime rib in the bay."

  • "House of Prime Rib is a San Francisco standard. It is a must visit as it is one of the top restaueants of it's kind in the country. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the prime rib served from the one of a kind traveling zeplin device is a treat. "

  • "Make your reservations No matter what! I was surprised to see the place completely packed at 5:30 on a Tuesday. WOW! and now I know! So incredibly good! The service impecable. I noticed so many groups of people. Families, business, everyone!"

  • "Definitely worth not eating all day to build an appetite for Roast Beef that is extraordinarily good! Rare and melt in the mouth. Service was friendly and efficient - Not a good place to go if you don't eat Beef or fish (two choices) - but otherwise - it was great! "

  • "I've been going to the HOPR for over 25 years and it still remains the best in the City, possibly in the WORLD!!! "

  • "Such a San Francisco gem! I took my college aged son and he loved it. It is pure prime rib - but the best. They bring half a cow to your table. Very fun and cool, in a retro way. "

  • "Excellent as ALWAYS, the service and food met ALL my expectations!"

  • "Been going to H of PR for years - love the place and the food!! My only problem this trip was with the waiter - he was just simply in such a hurry on all fronts that it made the meal unrelaxing!! This place is so busy at all times that the waiter really can make or break your visit. I will certainly go back, I just hope I don't get the same waiter. "

  • "My dining experience here was amazing. It was my first time here since 15 years and it was lovely. The food was great but the noise level was a bit high. I would strongly reccomend this place for fine dining and special occasions. I would also reccomend cleaner services. Thanks. "

  • "Our server was amazing. He went from table to table and made sure he took care of everyone. I took my boyfriend there for dinner and the birthday song and photo helped made his day."

  • "I've always considered HOPR my go to spot for any special occasion simply because they are the best at what they do and i am promised of the same great service, amazing food, and ambiance with every dinning experience. This time my table was rushed by the server and they failed to ask each individual if they wanted a leaner or fatty cut resulting in many of us not getting the type of cuts we wanted. Our server was sub par from the excellence staff that i've encountered at HOPR. I was very disappointed because i have hyped up the place to my friends and family only for them to experienced a mediocre restaurant that i know HOPR is not. Fron't desk is friendly and courteous as usual with Michael."

  • "Got us in 30 minutes before reservation. Energetic staff. Very noisy. Food excellent. Treated us very nicely, but atmosphere somewhat rushed and hectic. Would love to go again-a unique experience. Parking not easy-couldn't even pull out of traffic for valet."

  • "What a dining pleasure it was to experience the traditional prime rib at The House of Prime Rib. It is an absolutely wonderful dinner house with delicious food and excellent service. Too bad, more restaurants are not that way. My party enjoyed it tremendously."

  • "We had a wonderful meal here. If you like prime rib, it will be most likely the best you have ever had. Well worth one night of your trip."

  • "The Prime Rib is excellent. Service is top notch. The whole experience is something you will never forget."

  • "The food was excellent, the service was top notch, but the noise level was almost unbearable at times. Tables are in such close proximity to one another that being seated next to a rather annoying group (as I was) can put a huge damper on an otherwise very good experience."

  • "I love the house of prime because it's always consistent: great food and wonderful service."

  • "We actually make special trips to San Fran just to eat here. The ambience is very "goodfellas" and the service is great. The salad is really good and the Yorkshire pudding is also a favorite but there is no surpassing the prime rib. The meat melts in your mouth and has the best flavor. If you are crazy enough to eat everything on your plate the Crete brûlée is fabulous and the chocolate cake is decadent. Gus will greet you and make sure your meal is perfect :). It's great fun to watch them cut your beef at the table as well."

  • "I can't get enough of House of Prime Rib. This was my 4th time there and they never cease to amaze me. Even though we waited a while for our table (which was expected for a Friday night) the manager, Scott, came to our table to personally apologize for the wait and offered a round of drinks. Food was great as usual, and our server Candice was great."

  • "Reservation at 7:30. Sat in bar Til 8. Never got our drinks from the bar prior to sitting down. Waited a total of 45 mins for our first round of drinks. Asked for a special table and was sat in the back room right in the middle of all the chaos . Completely loud and obnoxious dining. Server was good and food good. We couldn't get dessert because we would have been late to next engagement. Mngr took round of drinks off bill ... Big whoop. Plenty of other great prime rib houses in the Bay Area !"

  • "Hi... WE thoight this place might have some finesse, but it is simply a very busy noisey spot, and the idea of impressing your girlfreind is out of the question. And if you happen to be there, they will either rush you out the r=door or turn tables with no consideration for you and your evening. On the other hand, if you just want a really big serving of salad, veggies and bread until you pop, this is your place."

  • "I've been eating there for over 40 years. The only time that I ever go to San Francisco is to have dinner at the HOUSE OF PRIME RIB. Never had a bad meal for all the years that I have eaten there."

  • "if prime rib is your thing, there is really no way not to like this place------and if Gus comes over and wants to give your wife a hug and a peck on the cheek, LET HIM!-------you'll enjoy the show!"

  • "We went there to celebrate my birthday. It got very noisy to the point where we could not talk in our regular tone of voice and we didn't like that. The food was very good but a lot more pricy since we last went. Portion of the beef seem to have shrink as well. I ordered the House Cut and hubby ordered King cut. The King cut was the size of the House in the past. Would not be a good place if you want a quiet evening. However, service was very good."

  • "The food was great. I had the house cut prime rib. With all of the side dishes they offer, I left the restaurant very satisfied. I would recommend it for special occasions and for a night out on the town. We had an excellent experience."

  • "This place has amazing food, and a great gimmick - having meat cut directly off the slab. Our waitress was completely on top of things, hilarious, and helpful. But, this place is buzzing with commotion. The lights are up higher than seem appropriate, bus boys are running around, groups are clamoring. It has the same sort of ambiance as an Olive Garden, packed to the brim on a day they have a family special. Wait staff are running around with such urgency, darting in between tableways and tight passages, it feels like you can't relax because of all the amplified energy. I'd still recommend it to my friends, as it seems like a staple place that everyone should go once, but there are much better places to go if you want an upscale steak."

  • "The food was great. The servers were excellent. I did find the restaurant pretty noisy though, and even though we had a reservation for 7:00 pm, we didn't get seated until 8:00. I'm not sure why reservations were required if we had to wait that long. It would be ok for me, but I had kids with me, so they were really tired out at the end."

  • "to the staff who had to deal with us, so sorry! my dad likes to crack jokes that are only funny if you can decipher his crass but juvenile sense of humor and comprehend his poor English. I felt like our main waiter felt very confused. other than that, the Yorkshire pudding was a big hit. the prime rib was tasty as well. nothing else was memorable, and if it weren't for that massive hunk of meat, I'd find this ridiculously overpriced and overhyped. I would've preferred the meat to have fewer big pockets of pure fat too. thanks to the mandarin speaking busser who took photos for us! my relatives visiting from deep china did find the host?/manager? to be so handsome as to be worthy of pierce brosnan as bond."

  • "After 40+ years of residing in the Bay Area, we finally made it to the House of Prime Rib. Unfortunately, we scheduled our birthday celebration with another couple for a Saturday night, when it seems everyone else in the Bay Area, tourists and residents alike, were also trying to dine there. It is a great place for a special occasion and the food was delicious, but the restaurant was SO crowded, and SO noisy, and the wait staff was stretched SO thin that we really did not have the enjoyable occasion that we had anticipated. I wonder if our experience would have been better if it was a "quiet" Tuesday night? My recommendation would be to NEVER try to eat here on a Saturday night or any major holiday."
