Diner Reviews
  • "Nice views on the patio where we were seated. Waiter took our drink orders and that took long. Then we ordered appetizers and dinner and that took awhile as well. At first i thought the delay was a ploy to get us to order another round but i never saw our waiter. Our appetizers finally arrived and as soon as we got them out comes our orders served to us by two other waiters. Now I'm nursing what's left of my 22 ouncer, rushing through my bowl (not cup) of lobster chowder, hoping i get to my lobster meatball risotto before it gets cold. At least our waiter was nice enough to deliver our check and ask the obligatory, "any room for desert?""

  • "The food was good and priced just right. We had a party of 10 and the service was good. The atmosphere was just what we were looking for."

  • "We have been to House of Big Fish many times with foreign friends and visitors and is always a great place for casual dining. You can look out over the sea although you are not on the beachside. At the same time the plates are a little smaller and priced accordingly. As such we often have a couple of appetizers before a great piece of fresh Fish and a desert. They have a great beer selection and my wife says the wines by the glass are good also. Well worth a visit"

  • "We've eaten here about 5 times now and always come back because of the food and pricing, but we are always challenged by the service. The restaurant did locate us in the desired back patio area because we had a party of 13, but our (young) waitress was challenged. We requested separate checks (3 total) and she did that, but several of the meals ordered "floated" onto the the wrong checks. A gentleman in our party ordered the yellowtail, but it wasn't prepared as requested. When our waitress went back to the kitchen to correct it she found out that his request was sent to the wrong table and then she learned that there was no more yellowtail by then, so a new selection was made. We still will go back...."

  • "Our dinner with friends was everything we hoped for and more. The window table on the patio was overlooking the Pacific Ocean with large opened windows bringing in the ocean breeze was AMAZING. The enclosed patio is more quiet, allowing easy conversation. Our server could not have been more friendly and helpful. At first I was saddened that the menu had shrunk since my last visit and the Southern hush puppies were gone, but the kale salad (which was much healthier) made up for the modification. The filet mignon I ordered was as delicious as the photo on the website. Everyone else ordered fish (Macadamia crusted Tilapia, Lobster Mac & Cheese and Red Snapper) and loved their meal. I will continue to recommend Big Fish for great sunset dining."

  • "We have been going here for many years was great. The last two visits were bad so we said maybe it was just us. Six of us went this time waited 15 mins before we called over a waiter to help us. Had to move our table because we could not converse because if the noise from the bar. The menu is now on a paper matt bad sign. Food came after 45 min and asking twice. Waiters too busy with the bar. Truly this place has turned from a restaurant to a bar with food. We will not be back. Three strikes it's out"

  • "It's fun to order the beer tasting option, where you get four choices of beers on tap. The food is pretty good, and the Mexican poke is delicious. However, avoid the calamari with Thai seasoning at all costs. It is a gloppy sweet mess something of a cross between pad Thai and calamari-- yuck. The service is friendly and helpful, if a bit scattered at times."

  • "This restaurant came recommended to me by a staff member at the Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel. This was by far my favorite place the whole trip to Southern California. We were seated in a screened in porch and the windows were open so it felt like being outside. You had a view of the ocean and mountains, very scenic! Our waitress was friendly, attentive and gave her recommendations. YOU MUST GET THE CHOWDER FRIES! This was shared by the table and gone in no time. We also had the Lobster cakes, good but nothing special. I had the King Crab Cobb salad, customized. I add mustard vinaigrette and almonds and removed the blue cheese and olives. The waitress said it wasn't a problem and my salad came out as ordered!"

  • "We have been going to Big Fish for a long time. We still enjoy the atmosphere and service. They redecorated and took some of that old local feel away. The menu was also changed and a few favorites were eliminated (small tapas dishes- hobo bowl, etc) which should be added back. Here is what to try on the new menu - Ahi Poke, Calamari, Seafood Jambalaya, Hamburger, Key Lime Pie and Brownie. The lobster dishes used to be tasty but they changed to a lobster ball which is breaded and now you cannot taste the lobster."

  • "I picked this place because its a great view if you get a window spot to see the sun set and the price is really good. There are lots of expensive spots in Laguna Beach so when you find one that is reasonable and still has the view its great. Wide variety of food and great drinks on the menu."

  • "This is a very casual bar with lots of TV's. then as you walk into the back, there is indoor seating and enclosed patio seating overlooking the pacific. The entrees sized FISH dishes are so reasonable. it is like HAPPY HOUR prices everyday. Where can you get a quality piece of Halibut, Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi or Barramundi with choice of four sauces and 2 sides vegetables for $14.00? Love this place"

  • "Despite indicating we were first time patrons requesting their window/sunset view, our table was not great. We politely asked the manager to be re-seated. He dismissed our request with a "you should have said 'patio'" - as if we'd been there before. No additional offers to accommodate. When we said we'd leave we guessed he didn't care. Apparently customer service is less of a priority than his seating chart. We dine all the time in LA- this was just amateur hour."

  • "I had read a lot of bad reviews, but our group decided to still give them a try. We went for lunch and were seated right away. Our waiter was great, friendly and helpful. Loved their menu selection and theirs prices. Our food came out and was Great. Everyone loved what they had ordered. The only thing we did notice was some of the serving sizes were small, not all of them and people had complained about this in previous reviews, but we were ok with it it was only on a couple of the dishes and it is like that at a lot of the resturants down there. We really enjoyed ourselves and would definately go back again"

  • "My family & I went there for Father's Day and had an overall great 1st experience. The staff was friendly and accomadating. We were seated outside near a window at first, but then it got too hot, so we asked our server if he could move us. He came back and mentioned that the other tables inside were reserved, so my husband asked for the manager in which he came over and moved us right away. That is good customer service on that managers part. We were happy it all worked out ,and we could enjoy our dinner after that. We will be back. Thank you."

  • "A really nice varied menu with lots to choose from. I want to go back just to try other things, and yes the beer is cold!"

  • "My ahi salad and coconut shrimp were great, but my husband didn't love his fish and one child didn't like her's either."

  • "Had a party of 7, one of us in a wheelchair. Originally made a reservation for 4. Found out the day before the event (Father's Day) that 3 others were joining us (1 in a wheelchair). Called the restaurant and they were super accommodating and nice and gave me no trouble about adding 3 more people! Our reservation was first thing when they opened. They took us promptly and seated us in the covered patio area which had an amazing view of the water. Service was friendly and attentive. And the food was delicious! I have to give specific props to the Lobster Truffle Risotto - it was definitely a table favorite. Will definitely come back! THANK YOU, House of BIG FISH and Ice Cold Beer, for making our celebration a memorable and great one."

  • "All of my guests ordered fish and seafood as their main entrees, and I ordered the appetizers to share. All of them were fresh and prepared and spiced just right to bring out the natural flavor of the food. Our server was superb, patient with our questions and she gave us enough time without hurrying us as to what to order. The orders and food came out in the right order and at the right time."

  • "Amazing beer selection and menu is always fantastic. The price point is great too - where else can you get crest Mahi Mahi with 2 sides for $16?! The ceviche, ahi and shrimp appetizers are always our favorite. I love that the portions for entrees are not too big so you can also enjoy some appetizers without feeling guilty. Plus, the sports TVs are in clear view of the dining area so men tend to like this place a lot too :)"

  • "We had a dinner party of 6, made reservations with a seating request, and was seated on time and with a great table location. The Lobster Fondue and Lobster Mac N Cheese was a great table share, and my order of Bacon Wrapped Scallops with Corn Risotto was amazing. I can't wait to come back again to try other things.. I'd highly recommend this restaurant for patrons who like to try and share multiple food items."

  • "We arrived at 5:00 pm on a Friday& were seated at the perfect table....corner view ....sunset was amazing.. Loved the fish tacos and cerviche. Our waiter suggested the perfect beers for our different tastes."

  • "This is a fun, often loud, casual restaurant that puts out a good product. Extensive bar list and food options. My lobster, shrimp , etc. roll was spot on. Fries are some of the best you'll find. Service was friendly but not particularly attentive. Go here for a fun, casual meal, not a gourmet seafood experience."

  • "The food was outstanding! I'm very picky and there were so many great options on the menu it was tough to decide. Soup was delicious. Ceviche was one of the best I've had, I only wish there was more to finish off the chips. My husband got the ahi sandwich which he also said was amazing."

  • "Although the food was quite acceptable, the place was extremely noisy and we had difficulty hearing the person next to us speak. Had we known that it was going to be more of a sports bar, we would have selected another place. But for those who like the vibrant bar scene, it is a find."

  • "My family and I have been coming here for years. The last two years we felt the quality of food had taken a downward slide. However I am happy to say that on our last visit on 6/1/14, there was great improvement on the quality and taste of the food. I hope they maintain the higher standard."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner of fresh fish and healthy side dishes. It was all very tasty. Patrick was a good server; friendly, attentive and made you feel welcome. Specialty mixed drinks lacked in alcohol content so not worth the price, but beer was good!"

  • "Frank was our server: SUPERB! He has great knowledge of the menu, offering suggestions on food and drink. Very professional and friendly- the perfect combination! Thanks to Frank, our experience was flawless. The food and beverages were perfect too!"

  • "We had reservations and were seated right away. The server was very helpful with suggesting some local beers off the menu (we are from No Cal). This is the 2nd time we had eaten here, the first time a year ago. The menu had some changes, my son had been looking forward to the fish po boy but this was no longer on the menu. We ordered the chowder fries which are good and different. The high-lite was the coconut talapia. We had a fun server who made the evening more enjoyable."

  • "Had reservation but had to wait over 40 mins to get an outside table. the noise level inside restaurant was way too high to carry a conversation. Outside seating area was also noisy but a little better. I have been there 4 times, the food portions have definitely gotten smaller with each visit. The scallop risotto and lobster mac and cheese are definitely the best dishes."

  • "We used to love this place, but haven't been for over a year. They did a slight remodel to the restaurant and changed their menu. It seems they "upgraded" their selections and also raised their prices. We went for Mother's Day lunch and knew we'd have a tough time parking (the lot under Big Fish was full, but we were patient and found a great spot at a lot behind Big Fish.) Big Fish honored our reservation with no problem. Service was friendly and good. Food and drinks were good, but no longer a great value. The lobster and crab quesadilla appetizer was delicious - at $13 or $14 it is certainly a splurge. A plain burger (with no fries/sides) for $11 is very pricey. The view is still wonderful, so for a special meal we'll likely be back."

  • "We enjoyed a very pleasant dinner at this restaurant, before the crowds. In the past, we found it noisy, so we were slow about returning--but were happy we did, and will likely go again. Good fish, not overcooked, and in reasonable portions, nicely presented. And pleasant, not effusive service."
