A word from Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.

Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!

3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 22.95. A la Carte standards & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition.

"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or for booking private events.

I had an awesome experience eating at the Hourglass Tavern, me and my girlfriend has reservations for 5:30. She had read some reviews so she was dying to eat on the third floor. At first we were informed that there may not be any seating up there but because we had a reservation, they made it happen. I must say the waiter we had was top notch. He was funny and very entertaining. And the food.... oh the food was out of this world. First the bread was heavenly. Soft hot and tasty. We had the crab cakes and shrimp..MMMM good. I ordered the 10 oz steak while my girlfriend ordered the Lamb. I am still full and it was almost a week ago, LOL. I must say this place is one of the best. I will be going again. I will bragging about this place to all my friends and family.

I lived in this neighborhood 25 years ago and went to this restaurant frequently with friends. I brought my husband to NYC for the first time last week and was thrilled that the Hourglass was still here! This is a cozy, romantic "old New York" restaurant that serves excellent food and awesome cocktails. Their menu is not extensive, but the Prix Fixe is just right for a delicious affordable meal. My husband enjoyed his homemade mushroom ravioli, and my appetizer of crab cakes and shrimp was just right. The homemade bread is outstanding. They still use the hourglasses if you need to get to the theatre, but you are under no pressure to eat and get out. In fact, we had a delightful conversation with Beth, the owner, and our waitress, Megan, was awesome. Never believe that New Yorkers aren't friendly and engaging! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a romantic, personable place to eat with an ambient atmosphere and delightful staff! Looking forward to eating there again when we come back to NYC. Reservations are recommended as seating is very limited...

You would think that a restaurant near the theater district would have its act together for pre-theater dinner. We were shown to a table upstairs right next to the bussing station. We had to beg for menus and then wait and wait til someone took are order as the clock kept ticking Our food - a slight cut above cafeteria fare - came 10 minutes before we had to leave for the show. We bolted it down, paid the check and left ... Never to return

We were excited to go to the hourglass tavern; a small intimate space with a music decor (the upstairs dining room). Although I thought the menu had some interesting things on it, it was like going to the diner down the street. It was plain American food, good but not great. The service was inconsistent; but pleasant. The waitress was the host and bar tender and it was a full house. It was OK.

After passing this tiny restaurant numerous times, we finally tried it and were not disappointed. Maria, the hostess was warm and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Great ambience reflecting back to the origins of the place. Not typical tavern food, some Greek items on the menu with a nice mix of items. A convenient spot when you are seeing a show.

The great selection of "snacklettes" sliders and small plates are perfect for a light pre or post theater bite. The menu is more sophisticated than you would expect in a "tavern" and from the decor - some excellent pastas, fish and meat size portions with a gourmet twist. Excellent service. Request a table on the ground floor if you have difficulty climbing steep stairs.

We were a group of 11 seasoned theater goers who have eaten at many, many of the price fixed restaurants in Midtown. This is very unpretentious looking restaurant from the street. We were delighted with the menu, the wine, the service, and the price. There were adequate choices on the price fixed menu, and the wine was reasonable by NYC standards. We were on the third floor of the old brownstone building so it was almost like being in a private dining room. Our server was personable and efficient. Would recommend!

Menu had section about kids meals. I was dining with kids so took this as a cue that they would be fine. Upon arriving, we were told to go to 3rd floor-quite a climb if you have any physical limitations. We did not but we did have a toddler and a folded up stroller. The server was not prepared for us (we did have a reservation for 6 people) and the table only seated 4. We waited a bit for additional seating to be brought up. We then waited for server. No specials offered. Kids' sodas did not arrive until half way through meal because they had to fix the machine. Server did not seem thrilled to have gotten "family" table. Food was good but there is a lot of good food in NYC. Neat place but small, cramped and might need to climb!

We walk by dozens of restaurants in the Theater District and return to the Hour Glass time after time. The food is consistently great and occasionally there are moments of brilliance. One example of "brilliance", the "house" salad dressing. Skip butter on your bread and simply dunk into the dressing. The short ribs as an entry and the mixed seasonal fruit cobbler for desert are exceptional as well. The wine list has affordable choices and the price fix menu option and daily specials are well priced. And the menu is varied enough that all dining needs can be satisfied. I rarely give 5 stars. But the Hour Glass would get 4 1/2 of Open Table would let me.

The Hourglass Tavern is a Restaurant Row treasure! We had a reservation for 6:30, but showed up 2 hours early after a Saturday matinee. The staff was very understanding and flexible about our early arrival, and were happy to seat us right away. We thought we'd just have a drink at one of the little tables outside and then go upstairs for dinner. But we were having so much fun enjoying the beautiful day and people watching that we stayed right where we were the whole time! The food was great, and our server, Maria was totally fun and very attentive. It was a great experience and we'd go back again in a heartbeat. If you're looking for foo foo, this is not your place...
