A word from Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.

>Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!

3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 22.95. A la Carte standards & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition.

"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or for booking private events.

Diner Reviews
  • "The Hourglass Tavern has great food, great service, and a friendly attentive staff. The third floor area is old time with music of the 40's and simple decor. If you are looking for fancy this is not your place. If you are looking for a place that feels like home, go here. A nice variety of food available."

  • "Good food, friendly service. Cozy seating and reasonable prices. Front door left open with air conditioner on made the room comfortable and open to the sidewalk. We overheard several people walking by comment to their friends, "this is a good place to eat." They were right."

  • "A hidden gem, and we wouldn't have noticed it just walking down the street. Specials were very good and reasonably priced foor the neighborhood."

  • "We chose this restaurant from someone's review and it was perfect. We ate outdoors in Manhattan, and loved the experience. We flew up for a wedding. The food was delicious, and the waitress was a gem. I had the shrimp with polenta. We would highly recommend this little, and I mean little, restaurant to anyone. We ate outdoors to enjoy the NYC experience. Enjoy!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our meal at this very small restaurant in Hell's Kitchen. Funky and charming. The service was prompt - almost too fast. We could have lingered longer over our wine before entrees arrived. Small complaint though as my Shrimp Catalina was excellent. My husband had the spanakopita puff pastries and enjoyed them. The prices were great for New York. Would eat here again!"

  • "Enjoy a trip back in time and imagine what it was like to be in this wonderful tavern before going to the theatre 100 years ago!! It's a great pre-theatre dinner find. Wonderful food and great service. Thanks to open table for the convenience of making reservations on line."

  • "Visiting NYC on business for a few days and extended the trip for the weekend. Hourglass Tavern had good reviews on Trip Advisor and Open Table so we made a reservation that afternoon for later in the evening. Very small place but we were seated within 5 minutes of our arrival. I had the grilled pork chop which was excellent with a great char grilled flavor served with a yummy sauce (can't remember what is was). My wife had pan seared salmon that was also very good. Good service and friendly wait staff. Will consider again when we are visiting NYC."

  • "We had a 6:00 reservation and mentioned that we had a 7:00 curtain. No problem, we were told. We got our menus and ordered by 6:25, at the latest: grilled chops and the pasta special. By 6:50 we knew that we were in serious trouble. We had a couple of "your food is on its way" fly-bys from the owner and waitress. At 6:55 we got up and left a $20.00 on the table. The owner refused to take our money, was sorry for the poor service, and hoped that we would return another night. What was striking was the owner did not seen fazed by the lack of service at all: we were not offered appetizers or a comp for a future visit. Bottom line-we are not returning. My recommendation of "Hot Spot" referrers to our outside seating, nothing else."

  • "The Hour Glass Tavern has lots of character, history, great service, very good food, amazing desserts and very good value. Location is terrific as is walking distance to theatre district, Times Square and metro stops. Owner is lovely and wait staff personable. Companions had lamb special and found it to be delicious, potatoes and broccoli cooked to perfection. Had prix fixe theatre menu and that was tasty and incredible value. Would not hesitate to recommend. Reservations are a good idea."

  • "Our reservation was for 2 families (with 9 people total) before heading to an 8pm show. Tucked away on the cozy 3rd floor the service was prompt and polite. I had the pecan encrusted tilapia which was excellent. Based on the clean plates and happy smiles the rest of our group were equally satisfied. The waiter brought out a nice piece of cake for my daughter's 14th birthday. The coffee was excellent as well. We made it to our theater in plenty of time for curtain."

  • "Delicious food and wine. Especially loved the salad that had goat cheese and dried cranberries...nice dressing. We were a group of 4 headed to the theater. Good pre theater dining choice. Only criticism...very scant air conditioning on main floor ..made the experience less pleasant. I would return though...when the temp is cooler or confirm, in advance, a table on the second floor where the a/c was working more efficiently."

  • "A very tiny restaurant with very few fresh, delicious dishes and an excellent location for a night out in Broadway. Due to the small room and the high attendance, reservation is highly recommended. An overall cosy atmosphere and the friendly service compensate for the little space inside. There were also a couple of tables outside which seemed more comfortable."

  • "We arrived on time but they didn't have a table for us. One lady said she thought she'd already checked us in. The place was busy so obviously she'd given away our table. We were told to wait on the 2nd floor by the bar and she'd have a table for us on the 3rd floor in a few minutes. It was very hot in the restaurant, and the staff were all rushing around causing a chaotic atmosphere. After 30 minutes still nothing so we decided to leave as we needed to eat before going to the theater. We passed the lady on our way out and she didn't even acknowledge us. The food may be good, but we will never go back. I do not recommend this restaurant pre-theatre - they cannot cope with the crowd."

  • "My family and I (a group of 10) went to the Hourglass Tavern last year and loved it. My family had been in from out of town and requested this restaurant again. The food is awesome, and you really can't get much better prices so close to Times Square, especially for this quality! The drinks are reasonable, and the ambiance is adorable with musical instruments on display on the walls. It really is a cute place, great food, walking distance to Times Square, and the service is great!! Just FYI- if you book a table for a large group you will be probably be on the third floor and there is no elevator, that I know of."

  • "Our dinner at the Hourglass Tavern was lovely. We were seated outside as it was a nice evening in the city. The ambiance and noise level on my review are noted because the fire department was attending to a situation right across the street. We still had a great time at the restaurant in spite of the flashing red lights. The food was great (we sampled meat, fish and vegetable/charcuterie) - everything was tasty! The wait staff was friendly and helpful on the recommendations. Overall a lovely evening!"

  • "Everything was pretty mediocre, the food, the serivice. My group and I were very nervous as all of the reviews and all on open table fail to mention that its NYC inspection has earned them a grade B."

  • "We chose Hourglass Tavern because it was casual and in walking distance from our hotel. It's situated in a charming old brownstone on Restaurant Row. They didn't offer much of a wine list but did have an extensive beer selection. We started with the polenta shrimp appetizer which was delicious--6 decent sized shrimp cooked perfectly. A homemade loaf of bread was brought to the table and was fabulous. My husband ordered the rosemary rubbed chicken which came with mashed potatoes and broccoli, all of which was cooked well but under seasoned. I had the field green salad with goat cheese, all fresh with a very good lime vinegarette. For NYC the price was great, atmosphere -quaint, service-ok and the food -solid. Good but not Great!"

  • "We made a reservation here pre-theatre for June 13. Our reserved table had been given away when we arrived on time, so we were seated in the second floor bar to wait for another and had a nice appetizer and cocktail. The host and bar staff were friendly and accommodating. When we were seated for dinner, our waitress seemed a bit annoyed and unattentive. I ordered the chicken and it was very dry and overcooked. Our waitress never returned to ask if the food was ok, so I ate just few bites. My dinner companions both had pasta dishes, which they said were good. The waitress never asked if we enjoyed our meals and I would have liked to comment on my terrible food."

  • "Went to Hourglass tavern between plays when they were extremely busy. Seating was extremely tight and wait staff was over extended. Salads with grilled chicken were very good - salmon was okay. Prices very reasonable. There were other floors of the restaurant that we did not visit. They may have been less hectic - we were right off the street."

  • "Hourglass Tavern is in a non-handicapped accessible three story building. One of those older buildings that has a million layers of paint. Each floor is a small room with a few tables. It was a little disconcerting when I walked in to check in for our reservation. No obvious place to check in. There was one woman serving the first floor and she directed our party up the narrow staircase to the third floor. There was one server for the third floor with some help from another. He was great although he was working really hard. The food was quite good. The chocolate flourless cake was awesome. The drinks were reasonably priced for NYC. Our entire room cheered on the Belmont Stakes. A NYC bonding moment."

  • "I reserved a table 2 months in advance. We arrived about 10 minutes early, advised them that we were here, were told that our table was ready, and waited for the last person to join our party. 3 minutes before our reservation time, we were sent upstairs to our table and were told that a table was not available and we would have to wait. Our table was given away to a group that just walked in. Because of time constraints, we were unable to wait and therefore unable to eat at this restaurant. To quote Jerry Seinfeld in an episode of his show, they "know how to take a reservation, they just don't know how to hold a reservation." The ratings above aren't accurate, as I was not allowed to submit this review without filling them in."

  • "Dined at hour glass pre-show. Food was fine, really just average, a bit disappointing. Service was wonderful, we had a very attentive waitress. The vegetable soup I ordered for an appetizer was incredibly salty (this coming from a saltaholic). When I informed the waitress of this she immediately removed my plate and brought me a salad. This was a nice gesture."

  • "The food is very good and fairly priced. The atmosphere is very nice too and the service was friendly and helpful and attentive. My niece and I enjoyed our dinner experience very much. Easy too recommend this place and I will be returning again soon."

  • "The food and drinks were good. We had the pre-fix menu and enjoyed what we ordered. But the service is lacking. The staff is more concerned about cleaning tables than taking drink orders and are not very aware of their clients wanting to order. "

  • "Reservation for 7 arrived 10 minutes early and was seated promptly on the 3rd floor. Room was compact...could have lost a table of six ...giving a little more room and less feeling that you were ease dropping on other guests."

  • "This has become my 'go to' dinner spot for either before or after going to a Broadway play. I love the ambience - particularly the 2nd and 3rd floors. The first floor is a little too crowded and I don't really like eating down there. The Betti-Bar is really cute and happy hour prices are great. The limited yet comfy seating on that level is a great place for an intimate dinner. I also love the third floor, decorated with musical instruments on the walls - another great option for dining. I have been to this restaurant three times now and enjoy it more each time - the menu is quite varied and has options for all types of eaters (although probably not for young children). "

  • "We read the reviews at Trip Advisor and chose the Hourglass Tavern. We are so glad we did! The reviews we read stated that it didn't have much of an outdoor appearance, but they highly suggested that you go in and eat. We took their suggestion, had a fabulous time with very friendly service, and had fantastic food. We were a party of 4 and we all ordered something different....all 4 were delicious! I would highly recommend the Hourglass Tavern! "

  • "Place is very tiny so groups of more than 4 are a tight squeeze. Food is excellent, staff friendly & attentive. After a slight mix up when we arrived (admittedly we were very early) the staff & both owners went out of their way to make sure we were happy & we left with smiles on our faces. We started with the Albondingas & they are the best chicken meatballs I've evertasted. Pork chop is very good, as is the penne mascarpone. Pasta was perfectly al dente. Be sure to try the Brooklyn Flower -- delicious & refreshing. Deserts are limited, but we had both the tiramisu & warm fruity cobbler. Both very good (and I don't usually like tiramisu!). If you can stand a bit of claustrophobia I heartily recommend giving Hourglass Tavern a try."
