A word from Hourglass Tavern
The Hourglass Tavern is housed in a renovated nineteenth-century brownstone on New York's famed restaurant row. Thirty years ago, each table had a working hourglass: your dinner would take only the time it took for the sand to run down, and theatergoers wouldn't miss the curtain going up.

>Today, the Tavern has three intimate floors, each with its own charming personality. The hourglasses are mostly decoration, but if you've got tickets to a Broadway show, they are still used to assure that we'll get you there on time!

3 Course Pre-Theatre Prix-Fixe 4pm-8pm - 22.95. A la Carte standards & daily specials can be made a 3 course Prix-Fixe with a $10 addition.

"Bettibar" is located on the second floor, offering a gamut of affordable wines, & an array of local and imported beer. The 3rd floor is available for dinner service or for booking private events.

Diner Reviews
  • "The seating on the ground floor was rather cramped. We sere seated right adjacent to the entrance which was not the most ideal. However, the prix fixed menu is unbeatable and the food was delicious. The vegetable soup, the shrimp fettucine and the tiramasu were all commendable. The shrimp was cooked to perfection. The waitress was very welcoming and despite being busy was attentive to our needs. This was our second visit to this restaurnant and will no doubt make it a third."

  • "What a great value! Excellent prices and fantastic food. Loved the old building...very charming. Went with a group. Had to go all the way upstairs which was a hike, but WELL worth it."

  • "While I was simply hoping for an efficient dinner (quick, close to theater) for our group before we went to see our show, I was pleasantly surprised by our dining experience. Everyone in our group enjoyed a delicious meal, the service was brisk and attentive, the atmosphere was comfortable and festive--and we had plenty of time to walk around the block to the theater. The meal was part of a very enjoyable evening. I would recommend the Hourglass Tavern to my friends."

  • "This was a great choice for dinner before seeing a play. The restaurant was cute although small. The food was good and the people couldn't have been nicer. Prices were very reasonable. All-in-all, a great experience."

  • "The Hourglass Tavern offered a wide variety of food at reasonable prices. The portions sizes were very good & the food was cooked to our specifications. The waiter was fantastic - very friendly, witty & helpful. He made sure to ask if we were seeing a show to ensure that we got our food quick enough to make it on time - without rushing us. Great place to go before hitting the theater."

  • "After reading reviews for the Hourglass on Open Table I thought we were going to get a nice meal at a resonable price. It did not work out that way. We were a party of three, with a 5:15 pm reservation. We were seated right away. Two of us were pinned into a booth type table on the first floor of the restrurant. The waitress was polite and efficient. We all ordered shrimp dishes. The shrimp tasted as if it had been frozen. One of the dishes had polenta which was not even edible. There was seafood ravioli on the menu and it indicated it was made fresh. They were out of it at 5:15! The dinner crowd was just starting. It was just a disappointment all the way around! I would no reccomend this restaurant!!"

  • "Went with a group for pre-theater dinner - our table was ready early- food service was very personal; quick but not rushed. Loved the comfortable local feel, very few tourists. Our pre-fixe meal was simple but well prepared, very good value for the money. Will definitely come again."

  • "We had a 6;00 reservation and were trying to make an 8:00 show, we were seated at 6:45. It is a VERY crowded place. I love it and recommend it to everyone- the food is wonderful and the staff very nice but...I think they tend to overbook and it makes for a much less enjoyable dinner when rushed. Also, since it is so small, the 4 of us waiting for 45 minutes was quite uncomfortable."

  • "As a sometimes solo diner, it is sometimes difficult to get attention and/or respect at restaurants during busy times. That was not the case at the Hourglass Tavern. While I did have an initial wait despite arriving on time for my reservation, once I was seated (at a nice table) I received prompt and continuous attention. I ordered something very plain and basic (a steak), so I really can't comment on the menu. Its quality was good and presentation straightforward. I will compliment the wine-by-the-glass selection. It's rare to find interesting wines available by the glass at reasonable prices."

  • "This is my second time celebrating my bday at the Hourglass. Is nicely located great decor. The bettibar is a nice place to meet before dinner."

  • "Made a reservation for 6pm. Arrived at 515pm wondering if we could be seated then. We were told no even though there were 3 open tables. Went down the block for a drink, came back exactly at 6 and were told we would have to wait 15 minutes. They offered us a table in the cramped bar area. Totally unacceptable. They need to figure out how to manage the place. Very disappointed. It was our first anniversary. We left and went somewhere else."

  • "The whole experience was awesome, but the server (I believe her name was Maria??) was so friendly and made you feel like you were at her home enjoying a warm meal on a cold night. Food was amazing too. Good find!!"

  • "Adorable space, excellent food and good prices.... amongst the many bigger, louder and more expensive restaurants on the Row, this one is tucked away. Three floors - the downstairs is tiny, with only a few tables and great for a romantic evening. A cute bar occupies the second floor and another dining room- larger, but still cozy - sits on the 3rd level. The service is quick, and takes care of the pre-theater crowd. They have a good selection of home-cooked comfort foods, and also offer prix fixe options. I love this place, have been before and will go again."

  • "love the place. Made reservations and had a table set exactly the way I had asked. A nice light meal and drinks before a Broadway show. It was a perfect start to a great night."

  • "My friend and I dined there before going to a show - we were a little skeptical from the outside and decided to go in, have a drink and check it out before checking in with our reservations. We had a cocktail upstairs on the second floor - the drink specials were great and the bartender (girl) was attentive and cheerful. We looked over the menu and decide to keep our reservation and give it a try. SO very glad we did!! We dined on the 3rd floor and the waitress was awesome! Very friendly, attentive and always with a smile on her face - food was very good - we both had the same price fix pasta and it was delish!! We will def come back!! :)"

  • "The food isn't great, the menu isn't extensive but it's a quick, decent option for before a Broadway show. Make sure to have a reservation. (Using OpenTable of course)"

  • "Charming little house, nice waitstaff, speedy pre-theater routine — but unfortunately the food is completely inedible. I dined with two friends and all three of us left most of our dinner on our plates. My ravioli was gluey and tough, in a sauce that tasted like melted margarine with lots of salt. A chicken entree was too tough to saw through. A bland salad was garnished with institutional wedges of bland cheese. Never again."

  • "We really enjoyed the Hour glass tavern. The restaurant is in restaurant row within walking distance to most broadway shows. It's not a very big restaurant but is quaint and the food is great. The cheese platter was an excellent choice for a small meal for those who don't want a heavy meal. They also have a kids menu and the hamburger sliders were a hit with my 12 year old. I would recommend a reservation as it did get busy and due to the size of the place, people were having to wait."

  • "Small, intimate pub near on Restaurant Row. Enjoyed the quaintness, but the variety for vegetarian food wasn't great. Ravioli were OK, but grilled cheese was unimpressive. Bottle beer selection had some interesting choices. Liked the ambiance."

  • "My wife and I have gone to the Hour Glass many times over the last 10 years for pre-theater dinners. Obviously the experience has been a good one or we would not have gone so often. Last Wednesday was the last time there. Despite reservation we got the worst table in the house - next to an opening and closing (slamming) door to the out side and upstairs. Constant cold air was wafted over us and our not too warm meal. Need to find a new reasonably priced theater district establishment. There are many options!"

  • "Chose this place just because it was near our theater. I arrived before my friend, was ushered in and happily given a table right by the window. I don't know how it is upstairs but we were perfectly comfortable. The service was excellent, friendly but not intrusive, the food was good and the prices reasonable. I intend to be a regular here - hopefully the upper levels are as comfortable as we were on the main level by the window."

  • "This place was pretty good for the price. I was a little miffed by the way we were greeted/hosted (we weren't shown to our table, they just sort of pointed us in a direction and said "that way"), but the server was attentive and helpful. Food was good, but not great. It is a nice place to go if your Broadway tickets blew your budget!"

  • "We had theater tickets on a Sunday night and so were looking for a casual place with good food and a relaxed vibe. The Hourglass was perfect. The food wasn't fancy, but it was comforting and delicious....and there was plenty of it. The service was also perfect - friendly but unobtrusive, and unrushed. We loved the meatballs, the barbeque sliders and the excellent cider vinaigrette salad dressing. Our meal was accompanied by an interesting jazz soundtrack that really added to the atmosphere. For pre theater dining, I highly recommend The Hourglass."

  • "We celebrate Valentine's day in NYC every year. This restaurant was only a few blocks from the theatre, and they gave us the window seat as the restaurant was pretty empty by 11pm (and it was snowing and awful outside). The service was friendly and fantastic, prices were reasonable, and food was great! I ordered the lobster ravioli that is homemade in house. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "Food was very good overall - my wife loved her steak, my shrimp ok (not crazy about the tomato sauce covering it). The inside of street level (where we ate) was intimate and the decor (hour glasses) was interesting. Bread was excellent. Wine was very enjoyable. Waiter was excellent. Overall, a nice place to have dinner before a Broadway play."

  • "Went on Valentine's Day. The prix fixe menu posted on their website was different/less expensive than the one at the restaurant. Online menu also had wine and additional appetizer specials that were not being offered at the restaurant. My girlfriend ordered Filet Mignon, however, the piece of meat she was served didn't look like any Filet Mignon I've ever seen served anywhere else - it truly looked like a different cut. However, it was very good. Finally, we were seated in an area downstairs, that was directly next to the waiters serving station and kitchen. It was loud and not a place where a table should be. Food, very good. Seating, not good. Menu, different from advertised. Had great experiences there in the past. Recommend"
