Hourglass TavernA pleasant surpriseMy wife & I ate here after a matinee show. We sat outside at a small table for two. The service was excellent. We both had the Prix-fix dinner and found the food excellent. My wife had the chicken & I had the pork chop. It's a busy sidewalk are on Restaurant Row, but we enjoyed talking with the staff and owners. We will definitely return. BTW, drinks were not expensive, especially for NYC.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMLove this place! We enjoy coming here for a pre-theater meal!! Great food with attentive wait-staff.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMQuickieAfter theatre crowd bar lively, upstairs dining room intimate. Reasonable and good food and wine list5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAs usual the food was wonderfulAs usual the food was wonderful and the service exceptional. We were t the first table as you come in so the noise level was a bit high with people coming in but that certainly didn't deter us from having a great pre-theatre dinner. I would recommend this restaurant for before theatre !5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMCute place!I guess this little building used to be someone's home, at least it looks like it. We have been there several times (we live in Memphis) going back to the days when they used to put an actual hourglass on your table and promise to have you out in an hour to get to the theater on time. Just a very quaint place--we have always been sent up the very narrow stairway to the third floor which seats about 16 people. There is a bar on every floor so wine glasses are filled quickly. They always have a special on Sangria, which is pretty good. Really solid place to go before the theater.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMHourglass TavernWe often have dinner before or after a show and bring out of town guests who are not used to the prices in the city. The Hourglass Tavern had an excellent menu at a very good price point. Our guests enjoyed their meals and the experience. Our server was gracious and we had a very nice evening.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGood experience. Went forGood experience. Went for an after Saturday matinee dinner. Nice atmosphere, friendly service and reasonable pricing. Our table was a third floor walk up, so be sure your party is able, or request first floor.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways a pleasureWe dine here whenever we're in town for a show. Unlike other restaurants in the area, this one does not feel like a tourist factory where you are over-charged and pushed out by snooty staff. The waitstaff at Hourglass is friendly and efficient. Prices are extremely reasonable. Nice vibe. Also a good place to stop late for desserts and drinks.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMCharm, good food, and valueHighly recommended. Service was very attentive and friendly. Marscapone pasta is decadently delicious. The meat dish we ordered (Pork chop) was a little dry, but the rest of the food, including the salad, was delicious. The charm of this place is undeniable, and it's a great value. Much better than most places in the neighborhood. Both drinks and food are reasonably priced. Great function room on the third floor for a small party.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat fun restaurant! We went to the Hourglass Tavern after seeing a show. At first we were put off because the door was open and there were smokers outside and it was empty, but when I mentioned it the waitress closed the door, and the restaurant quickly filled up. It has two tiny floors. We couldn't see the third floor because of a private party.
The waitress was delightful. She was attentive and brought our drinks fairly quickly. We had terrific appetizers, especially the pigs in blankets and my main dish, and orchiette with vegetables was outstanding.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great meal and greatWe had a great meal and great time. We will be back very soon!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMHourglass sets a standardAn excellent unpretentious menu with very reasonable prices. Lamb shank cooked perfectly.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWent with 5 friends afterWent with 5 friends after the theater, had a 5pm res. taken earlier,no problem. Actually had the 1st floor dinning room to ourselves. Food was good & hot. We all enjoyed our meals. No one rushed us so it was a nice relaxing dinner. The waitress was ver friendly & helpful. Overall had a lovely experience.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMsmall but funLocated on Restaurant Row, this house is cramped but fun and the food is excellent. A great value.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMdinner & a showPlace is narrow, staff very nice and attentive, food was good, came quickly. Good prices. Will definately go back. Make sure you have a reservation, place gets packed.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMHourglassThis restaurant is on New York's Restaurant Row in the Theatre District--a single block with so many diverse eateries that you'd swear you were in Epcot. That said, it was a pleasant little place to catch up with friends. Being on Restaurant Row, I'm sure it caters to the rushed pre-theatre dinner crowd. We weren't seeing a play so we dined in an unhurried manner. In other words, there was no pressure on us to vacate the table. That in itself is worth the price of admission. The staff was great and very friendly and attentive. Food was very good; tried the shrimp fra diavolo, chicken alfredo (best of the three) and pork chop. All were well prepared and tasty although the pork chop was a bit on the small size. All in all, I would go back.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMDeceptively much larger thanDeceptively much larger than it looks (and it looks tiny) because it has 1 or 2 more dining floors, a bar tucked away between stairs, a hard-working & pleasant staff, very reasonable prices & "good enough" food. We enjoyed it.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMHome made tastesGood grilled entreés with home cooking feel. The apple-blueberry cobbler was delicious and reminded us of something our own mothers would have made. The prixe fixed dinner was a reasonable meal for the theater district. Very tight quarters and we marveled at the wait staff running up and down the stairs with food!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Location, good choiceNice restaurant in Theater District. When we got there is was kind of empty so we got a nice table upstairs and a lot of attention from our waitress. By the time we left is was packed and we basically were ignored.
The food was good. Prix fix menu was limited but good. Beet salad was a pile of beets for $10.
I would recommend for pre theater; its a great location and mostly good experience, although it did smell of disinfectant when we walked in.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA cozy Italian restaurantA cozy Italian restaurant with good food and earnest service in a neighborhood ordinarily known for touristy kitsch. Was a great place for pre-theatre dinner. Highly recommend.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMA Great FindI loved the cozy atmosphere of this restaurant. A great spot for before theatre as the service was well-timed and friendly. Affordable wine list. The grilled pork chop was delicious and the fruit cobler for desert was outstanding!! I will definitely return to try other dishes!!!!4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways A Great ChoiceAlways love going to Hourglass Tavern. We were 8 women who were served beautifully by Maria. Not easy to serve 8 of us. Maria is friendly and worked very hard to make sure we were all happy. And we were! Food is always delicious whether it is homemade ravioli, pasta, fish, or chicken. And the bread is too good! We look forward to our next time.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMHad the prix fixe menu ofHad the prix fixe menu of salad, delicious pork chop and the homemade berry tart for dessert. Quite a good deal and the food was excellent. The bartender/waitress was very friendly, helpful and was attentive too.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMNice little spotIf you don't mind tight quarters this is a great place!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were a group of 7 comingWe were a group of 7 coming from the Sex and the City Tour. This restaurant was a super way to finish the night. The service was excellent and the food was delicious and a great value. We ordered off of the preset theater menu. We would definitely be returning!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMCharming!Set in a converted pre-war brownstone, the Hourglass Tavern is a "great little spot" in every sense of the word. The dining area is very small with the kitchen just steps away and in plain view- just one of the attributes that made me so fond of the spot and made for a very NYC experience. There is a bar on the 2nd floor that looked fun too. For locals and tourists alike, I think a great experience is waiting here. My entree was delicious and the server very pleasant to boot!4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place to eat!Loved this great place, the food was awesome and the service is great. The only issue was the noise level, hard to talk to my wife.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThere were 11 of us womenThere were 11 of us women for dinner after a saturday matinee. All I can say is that the food was delicious and the service fabulous.
Highly recommend4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat prix-fixe pre-theatreGreat prix-fixe pre-theatre dinner. Good service and excellent food. Loved the House Dressing. A bit cramped; I wouldn't recommend it for a leisurely dinner.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMDidn't quite know what toDidn't quite know what to expect! Turned out to be a find, Good service, good food. Will go back.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect pre or post theatrePerfect pre or post theatre spot. Service is friendly and fast, food is very good and prices reasonable.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect DateMy boyfriend and I went to the Hour Glass Tavern before going to the theatre. It is conveniently located in the heart of Restaurant Row. The atmosphere was romantic surrounded by victorian decor. The place was unique with genuine servers and fast service. Food was great with even better prices. If you are looking for a non-touristy/ hole in the wall type restaurant, I highly recommend the Hour Glass Tavern. I would not recommend for large groups since space is tight but it is absolutely perfect for couples and small families.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMlocated amidst restaurantlocated amidst restaurant row, still very interesting and frequented by locals. A true gem and a beautiful place to enjoy dinner with friends or significant other.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of my favorites in ManhattanJust a great place with great food. Good prix fix menu and near the theaters.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMA little restaurant with big flavorIt's a time warp! If you want to experience some quality eat and drink in a pre-WW II French bistro, you'll love this place with warm, courteous service and honest, very tasty real cuisine. It's not a fancy or large establishment. In fact it occupies a tiny 3-story tenement. Nonetheless, the menu and service was excellent and all had a great time at a modest price in this theater-district joint.3/21/2013 12:00:00 AMWhere to take your mid-sized groupDecent food, lovely building, great experience! A cozy gem on Restaurant Row3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was great, the serviceThe food was great, the service was amazing. I travel with my boyfriend a lot.
