My boyfriend and I had dinner at HC on a Friday night. It was very loud and crowded when we got there. The dining room gave off a wonderful vibrant buzz and we were excited we had chosen HC to celebrate his recent promotion. We ordered a couple of cocktails to start, one lavender based, the other pear flavored. Our waiter was charming and warm. We tried to place his drawl, finally settling on somewhere in the southern. Our cocktails were superb, especially the pear one, the lavender drink was a bit to perfume-y for our taste. We had 2 starters, the mushrooms and the apple salad. The mushrooms were delicious, but I have this recipe so the only thing new here was the name. The salad was fine, however not inspired. For entrees we had the scallops and the ribeye. We both commented on the portions of all the dishes, as in, disappointingly small. His steak was overdone and dry. He ordered it medium, it was closer to well done. For a minute we thought he might have been given the wrong cut of meat because it lacked the marbling of a good ribeye. Only steak on the menu, so no. It had a good meaty flavor but we didn't taste any complimentary flavors to push this dish forward and away from the texture. As for the scallops, they were an utter failure. The plate looked exquisite, making the disappointment even greater. The first bite of the seared scallop revealed a smoky/bitter taste. And gritty bits. Not sure from what. The bitterness overwhelmed what would have been any sweetness from the scallops themselves, which unfortunately I never detected. But it got worse: they weren't seasoned! At all. When our waiter came to check on us I informed him of this and asked for salt and pepper. He was quick to get grinders but didn't seem alarmed. Not a good sign. The truly unforgivable flaw was the gritty pieces in between scallop bites. Where would grittiness even come in? I don't think we'll be returning. Our biggest regret is having opted for HC instead of the Bristol that night.

Went to Mindy's for the second time but this trip I didn't just try the hot chocolate. And it was worth it! They food was delicious and just the right amount to leave room for dessert. They also do great cocktails! They may be small but they sure do pack a punch! Also tried their donuts for dessert! OMG they were unbelievable!

Note: We had a reservation and it is recommended that a reservation be placed. This place is so popular that it fills up 1 hour after opening for dinner......even on weekdays. Deserts also change based on season....I think. First of all, when we walked in we were greeted and immediately seated. Server was attentive and was very knowledgeable of the menu and its items. The menu isn't the largest, but to me it is better that way. Cheese bread.....to die for! Burger...... Ever heard of beauty coming from simplicity? Well this burger is just that! Add an egg for an extra heap of goodness. Rocky road desert.....perfectly sweet, crunchy, smooth.....need I say more? Hot chocolate......well, they live up to their name. I had the Mexican which had the perfect blend of a bittersweet note with the holiday feeling of cinnamon and the heat of cayenne. It is the odd choice of all their hot chocolates, but it is totally worth it. If you get heartburn from spicy foods, you will need an antacid (like I did), but it is TOTALLY worth it. Let's just say, heartburn will NOT stop me from ordering this again. Overall, a MUST for any Chicagoan looking to try something different or any Chicago visitors!

I go to Hot Chocolate a few times a year, mostly for something special (a date, to celebrate) or even just for desert. It has all but one time been a great experience. The one time it wasn't I was there with someone confined to a wheelchair, and the bus staff continually ran into her chair, and tried to remove her food before she was done with it (she eats slowly) I wasn't exactly happy about that, since they never once apologized for bumping her chair, but that was the worst of it. Every other time has been great and the food and deserts always amazing. As it's fall they have a pumpkin spice hot chocolate which is great, and red pear ice cream that I love. Prices are high, but worth it because it's quality. Wait staff is super friendly.

Cute place, but not much about the food and ambiance stood out to me. Service was great and I enjoyed our pleasant server. We ordered the burger and crab cake sandwich and just was not wowed. I feel dessert is the way to go here but we weren't all that hungry. I did get the half and half hot chocolate after our meal and it was very good, but a little rich for my liking. I guess i was expecting something cozier for being called "Hot Chocolate", maybe something like a coffee cafe with dimmer lighting and a fireplace, not sitting super close to your neighbor in row seating. Regardless, still good food and might go back to try a couple items from the starters menu.

Our party of 5 ordered several apps including the Brussels sprouts, cheese, mushrooms, pretzel, prosciutto, with one person ordering soup, mushroom/brocoli. Besides the cheese sauce for the pretzel, none were standouts. some were grossly over priced-$12 for a wedge of cheese? We also ordered 4 entrees-scallops, crepes, pork, fried chicken. The fried chicken was a huge portion that came with a biscuit and was delicious. The other entrees were over priced and VERY small. 3 scallops and a pinch of slaw for $26?! In addition, with the exception of the crepes, again, none a standout. Now, the dessert was a reason to return! We had the donuts with to die for caramel sauce, pumpkin layer cake and sorbets. All fantastic as were the hot chocolates!

I went with a friend and we asked for a duck prosciutto as entrée, a soup (I think it was broccoli) and a hamburger as a main course. We LOVED them, specially the texture and flavor of the burger with the aged cheddar. Lastly we asked for two desserts (bread pudding and pumpkin layer cake) and hot chocolate. We honestly liked more the food and the desserts than the hot chocolate, the hot chocolates were good, but the hamburger and the desserts were outstanding. We were very pleased with our meal. It was the first time we've been there and we would definitely would like to come again.

Food is very well prepared and delicious but I feel portions of the dinner entrees are way too small for their high-end prices. I understand giving a reasonable portion but these dinner portions do not qualify as reasonable! I have operated restaurants my entire adult life and know the cost involved in running a restaurant....but patrons should leave the establishment feeling satisfied from their meal without having to order 2-3 appetizers and an entree to feel comfortably sated. I will return but perhaps only for the lunch menu if prices are more reasonable. I don't mind paying for a great tasting, fair plate of food but I will not pay for the idea of a meal:(

Hot Chocolate was delicious! The decor is a mix of eclectic and modern, and the service is wonderful. I'd definitely recommend getting dessert, and their beer list is pretty great as well. One downside is they don't do take-away in order to preserve standards. The food can also be a bit pricey, but I'd definitely go back.

Second time dining here, first time for dinner. I have to rank it among the best dinners I have had in Chicago. My guest had the scallops that were amazing. I had the hamburger and concluded that all other hamburgers should be judged against it. Really, it was that good. And it goes without saying that the desserts are out of this world. Other than being a bit loud at times, I would recommend this place to anyone for impeccable food and outstanding service.

The food was great as usual, but the service was slow. We waited about 15 minutes for a server to approach the table, and only because I hesitantly called one over. The food came out rather slow, but not terribly so. It took another 20 minutes for someone to approach with the dessert menu, and even though I was told my pumpkin layer cake would be ready in "literally 1 minute," it took another 20 minutes. If it came out freshly baked, I would understand, but it was obviously pre-sliced and all they had to do was garnish it. Don't get me wrong, it tasted amazing, but don't promise quick service if you can't deliver on it. The restaurant was badly understaffed for a Friday night at 7:30. I will go again, but it was disappointing.

Okay, so as you can imagine the hot chocolate was OUT OF THIS WORLD (highly recommend the Mexican)! The food was very good and what impressed me most of all was the quantity of food. It was really nice to come to a restaurant that didn't fill a plate with enough food for 3 days, which means there is always room for dessert. We ordered the Doughnuts thinking there would be 3 Dunkin-like doughnuts and would be just enough for the 3 of us but what came out was truly a taste of heaven! There were 5 little doughnuts that tasted unlike any doughnut I have ever had! They were incredible!

Great fun atmosphere! Restaurant was buzzing for a Saturday nite. Our 8pm reservation was timely even though there were many people waiting to be seated. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable. Our dinner of pork chops (for him) and scallops (for me) was delicious. The only stressful part of dinner was trying to figure out what to get for dessert! We spent a lot of time staring at what everyone else got, and everything looked amazing! We finally decided to split a chocolate mint milkshake, which they split for us in 2 different tall skinny glasses. FANTASTIC!!! Cant wait to go back to try something else.

I have been here several times and this night seemed a little off the mark. This fall's menu didn't live up to last year's menu. We had the butternut squash soup (good), mac n cheese (best ever), the cheddar biscuits (ok), the flap steak (good), the scallop option (meh), the doughnuts (good), the bread pudding (total disappointment compared to the last bread pudding i had there), and a hot chocolate. It wasn't a bad meal, it just wasn't as special as my previous trips there. Service was fine. Cocktails were just ok. Will return next year, when they roll out a more inspired menu.

A few of my friends had great things to say about this place, so I went in there with high expectations. I really respect and appreciate restaurants that cook in accordance with the seasons, and the menu looked delectable. I ordered the Poussin, which arrived at a lukewarm temperature. The chicken was completely lacking in meat and was entirely bone. I ordered dessert feeling hungry. I ordered the "apples" dish, which was good, but did not rock my world. My friend ordered the "black and tan", which was delicious. Overall, a very disappointing experience but I will likely try Mindy's again, most likely for brunch.

I've been to the restaurant several times and the fact that they rotate their menu every season keeps me looking forward to come back. It's kind of too bad because I had a pork belly dish there for brunch one time and now I don't think I'll ever find it on the menu again! Moot point, though, because everything else on the menu looks so good. And, of course, the hot chocolate always hits the spot!

I hadn't been to Hot Chocolate for many years and as my children were smaller had not thought of this restaurant. I've been 2 times in the last two weeks. Both time had a burger and the other time had a crabcake sandwich and lucked out to have 'fried chicken friday'. The food and service were both outstanding. I didn't try the other menu items because I couldn't bear NOT to get that burger. Best in the city. You wouldn't think, but it is. I didn't actually want to order the signature 'donuts' either, but my daughter did. Also the best in the city...and I go to all the donut 'hotspots'. Highly recommended.

We were a group of 4 celebrating a special birthday and we could hardly hear each other to have a conversation. We thought the menu was limited for dinner, and the served strongly encouraged us to order an appetizer" because we wouldn't have any food for at least 30 minutes." My crab cake sandwich was good, my husband's poisson was fair, my brother's hamburger was OK, he said and my sister-in-law was happy with the duck she ordered. (she was being treated, so what could she say). The best part of the dinner, according to the four of us, was the cookies we had for dessert.

My first visit to Hot Chocolate, perhaps three years ago, was wonderful -- we were looked after incredibly well and had great food. Although it's very far away from us, we have continued to go back once a season, often with friends whom we wanted to introduce to the place. But I have to say, the imagination and care with which the food is prepared has diminished, and our last visit was particularly mediocre. Inter alia, there were vegetarians in our group, and in a young restaurant in 2014 there was ... nothing. And when we asked, the answer was: pasta with tomato sauce. You've got to be kidding me.

Went here for desserts on a Sunday night after dinner elsewhere. Surprised to find it about half full. As usual, the desserts were fantastic; the toast ice cream was the best I've ever had. The server could omit her two references to the James Beard Award. Fast, good coffee service.
    Special Features:
fit for foodies, good for groups, romantic, late-night find
