Diner Reviews
  • "Went here for a friends birthday. It was a little pricey but the food was excellent."

  • "There are so many wonderful options in Chicago but I wouldn't recommend Hot Chocolate. We had eaten there several times before and had always been pleased with experience. The shrimp salad was very skimpy on the egg, avocado and bacon and the hamburger was OK but not exceptional. The hot chocolate was exceptional as always."

  • "Hot chocolate never disappoints me. I have been there for brunch and dinner several times, it's always the best! Enjoy!"

  • "Bummed that menu on line was nit updated. Desserts offered were different than what was on line. Still good and will try again."

  • "The hot chocolate was awesome- I tried the Mexican hot chocolate. This alone was filling. The dinner menu was limited and there wasn't anything in particular that I wanted to try. Most of our table had soup and salads. The dessert menu and hot chocolate made up for the limited choices for a meal. I would highly recommend this place for dessert."

  • "First time at Hot Chocolate. Went for lunch. Carrot ginger soup was great, just the right amount of heat from the ginger. Trout salad was outstanding, the vinaigrette made the salad. Tried a sip of my husband's Mexican Hot Chocolate, the cayenne pepper paired well with the chocolate. Will definitely be back for dinner."

  • "Took clients here on a friend's recommendation. Was not disappointed!"

  • "Seriously... they named this place perfectly. I got the Malted Vanilla, and my fiance got the Dark, and we both we transported straight to Blissville with the first sip. Not to downplay the delicious salads, charming & hip ambiance, and awesome cookies (pb&j=wow), but the hot chocolate, guys... THE hot chocolate. I'm going to have some shipped to my house because I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to it now. If I didn't mention it before, it was absolute perfection."

  • "It was a great visit to one if our favorite restaurants."

  • "my first trip to this gem of a restaurant was perfect...every course innovative, delicious, and without t question desserts were spectacular. brought business associates here the other night and very disappointed...overly overly salted Mac and cheese, and pappardelle that had the texture of cardboard, grossly undercooked, despite the wonderful sage pesto atop. everyone else enjoyed their meals however! but these were glaring errors in a kitchen capable of better???was reticent to make a scene Nd send 2 dishes back, so stayed quiet. the desserts, especially the ricotta cheesecake and the banana trio were superb and service was excellent! would return again but would be more vocal if similar errors made."

  • "We went there for my daughter's 19th birthday and had a fabulous experience. The food was excellent, especially the beef brisket. And of course the desserts were unbelievable. We have eaten here before and we will return."

  • "This place is fun, and the food is delicious. We especially enjoy the pretzels, the duck, and the bananas 3 ways. We appreciate the fact that they use locally grown products."

  • "I was really hopeful going into my dining experience at Hot Chocolate with the recent accolades for Mindy Segal. However I was really disappointed by my meal and service. The food was just average and the server was pretty terrible. There are a ton of other similar restaurants in the city; do yourself a service and check out another restaurant (or just go next door to Bluebird)."

  • "We had been to Hot Chocolate once and chose this as a special occassion for our daughter's 16th birthday. We had an extremely disappointing experience. The service throughout was slow, inattentive and amateurish througout. It was as if no one was in charge. We could not get our waiter's attention throughout the meal. Having sat shortly after 5:30 pm, we ultimately could not get anyone to take our dinner order until 6:15 (and this was after making it clear that we wanted to eat relatively quickly as we had a 10 year old.) Our entrees finally arrived (in three batches) an hour and 20 minutes after we sat down. Then after getting the desert menus our waiter disappeared again! Bizarre for such a well regarded place."

  • "Overpriced and uncomfortable overcrowded seating. Food was good not great. The hot chocolate was great."

  • "I ordered the tomato soup. I was a bit disappointed. It was plain tomato... The mac and cheese on the other hard, one of the best in Chicago. As usual, I went there for their medium hot chocolate BEST EVER. After lunch, just had half a cup. Service was ok. Families, friends and families around."

  • "We dined at Hot Chocolate for my daughter's 16th birthday. The food is excellent and approachable for the teens and adults. There is lots of love with every item ranging from the bread services (all appear custom and homemade) to the soups. Mindy Segal won a James Beard award for pastries for a reason. The donuts, cookies and hot chocolate (of course) drew lots of oops and aahhs. We can't wait to go back."

  • "OMG! What a find! I think I found my new favorite restaurant! It's small, different, very nice, but not stuffy, the staff was incredible! Even though they are know for their Hot Chocolate, the appetizers and the meal were so delicious!!! I will definitely be going back and have already been telling my friends what a great place this is. Great experience!"

  • "I've been here more times than I can count. I had a group of 5 visiting from out of town. One member of our party was delayed landing and late for our reservation. They would not seat the rest of us, understandable as many restaurants have this policy. When we sat down they were out of several cocktails and beers which was disappointing considering it was not late. Some of the group had appitizers and soups which were great. However, we waited one hour and ten minutes from the time appitizers were cleared to the time the entrees arrived. There was never an apology or explanation from the waiter. Two of the entrees ordered, the poussin, was something I have had before there, but it was completely dried out this time. Very poor experience."

  • "Three strikes and hot chocolate is out! I've returned to hot chocolate again and again with the hope that at some point my less-than ideal experiences would be rectified. Alas, the service continues to be average, the entrees lukewarm, and the noise intolerable! The desserts are it's saving grace - although it has strong competition from the likes of MK (hot chocolate's cake&shake doesn't quite measure up)."

  • "Stopping by Mindy's Hot Chocolate is a new tradition for my wife and I whenever we're in Chicago. I pay the highest compliments to the chef as well as the kitchen and wait staff. In my opinion their food is out of this world, and their desserts and hot chocolate are out of this universe. I just ate there with my wife this past Saturday and it was packed-- but what I so appreciate about the staff is how attentive they are to your needs even when they're busy. My wife dropped her knife from the table and literally before she could pick it up, a gentlemen who was bussing the tables at the time, gave my wife a new knife and picked up the dropped knife before we even knew what happened. Amazing food. Great ambience. A Chicago favorite for me."

  • "We found the restaurant beautiful, the service good, but the food overpriced for what it was. We each had a Hot Chocolate (which was very tasty, and the best part of our meal). But for the appetizers we got the monkey bread, which we both found to be underwhelming. And our main courses were good, but not worth the $30 a piece that we were charged. I'd recommend this place for a special occasion, or for someplace to go to get drinks and desserts. Probably not my first choice for dinner."

  • "lovely presentation, delciious house-baked specialities. milkshakes that take you back to the '50's at the malt shop with a 21st Century flare."

  • "Food was fair a bit greasy for my taste, we had the burger and lamb. The burger was okay, this isn't a burger place and there are better burger places in Chicago. The lamb was ground and seasoned but a bit dry, (the naan) bread wrap was greasey and a bit over cooked and flavorless. Appetizers where better than the entree, we had the prezel and Mac and cheese. By the time we had deserts we where stuffed and ready to go home but we ordered the chocolate taramisu and chocolate (squared) which where both delicious but we could not finish and if you go there just for hot chocolate and deserts there's a 15 surcharge."

  • "Pastry Chef Mindy gave good old fashioned American classic dishes a twist and her desserts fun and whimsical. She definitely knows all about blending and pairing chocolate with seasonal ingredients. The price is reasonable and we got our money's worth. The bartender created a cocktail that is off the menu that was such a treat. Portions are substantial. There was enough leftovers to take home; however, the desserts were too good not to lap it all up! Menu offerings have something for every palate with even a vegetarian option. Though there were only two of us to celebrate my husband's birthday, we ordered 3 desserts, coffee, and Mindy's Hot Chocolate was too good not to give it a try. We are going back for more!"

  • "We again celebrated at Hot Chocolate with the family! Our daughter turned 14 and asked to go to Hot Chocolate for the birthday dinner. The dinner specials are always spectacular. My son had the duck breast and enjoyed every bite. Sometimes hard to save room for dessert but we do manage to do that! The hot doughnuts are a family favorite and the white chocolate peppermint hot chocolate is simply heaven. Run don't walk to Hot Chocolate especially now in Chicago where it's absolutely FREEZING outside!!!"

  • "We've been to Hot Chocolate a number of times over the past few years- the food is outstanding, hands down. The service has something to be desired- generally the servers are knowledgeable and friendly, but the host staff is inevitably snobby and rude. They pack you into the space like sardines so you end up having to yell over the people sitting ontop of you to hear the people you are with. This is worse if you're a two-top. I don't recommend going here for a date."

  • "Seriously we are still talking about how great he was and how amazing the food was. Make sure to get a box of cookies to go!"

  • "The hot chocolate with which I ended my meal was very rich and very satisfying. But, the Old Fashion that preceeded the meal was equally satisfying (among the best I have had in 40 years of drinking them). The food was flavorful and artfully presented. The service was equal to any restaurant in the city and the overall experience pleasurable and relaxing. Bananas Three Ways is a tasty desert; the banana bread pudding was especially memorable. We will return."

  • "We didn't even have to make reservation for Friday lunch, but we did anyways. We were seated promptly, were not rushed at all for ordering our meal and dessert. Soup and sandwich is a great combo as I love pumpernickel bread, and we were able to try the black lentil soup instead of the normal tomato soup. Shrimp wedge salad was fantastic and my nephew loved the simple burger with milkshake. You must leave room for dessert because it's a full page menu with many choices! We shared the piping hot doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce, and had hot chocolate (half and half) poured over ice with housemade marshmallow. Great place to stop by for lunch or even just desserts. Warm ambiance and friendly service!"

  • "My family took me to Hot Chocolate to celebrate my 39th birthday & it was a wonderful surprise! Greg, our server, made the experience extremely enjoyable. He was knowledgable, witty, & kind. His recommendations were spot on perfect. We were planning our next visit even before we were finished with the appetizer! We all ordered something different which allowed for sharing & an even broader experience! There is nothing on the menu not worth trying! EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!! Scallops, pork chops, burgers oh my! The melody of flavors that dance on your tongue work on levels I can't begin to explain! The broccolini is not to be missed! (I woke in the middle of the night craving more!) All of this before the amazing desserts! Well done chef Mindy"

  • "I really love this restaurant and have introduced several people to it, but I had my first poor experience there over the weekend. My husband and I were celebrating a special occasion, which made it even more disappointing. In short, they brought my husband the wrong dinner entree, so I ended up eating my meal first (which was not hot), then we waited 30 minutes until his meal arrived, then he ate by himself. It was a very awkward way to have a romantic dinner. The waiter did not apologize and we would have appreciated a simple gesture like bringing us a hot chocolate or bread since we did so much waiting at the table. I absolutely recommend this restaurant to others, but hope others do not have the experience we had."

  • "I had the special of the night, which was a buttermilk fried chicken. Pretty delicious. I can still remember the flavor! I was particularly blown away by the hot chocolate though. I had the pumpkin hot chocolate, which has such a nice yet not over-powering flavor of pumpkin. The marshmallow was the best I've had (granted I've mainly had the kind in the bag or in Lucky Charms.) I would definitely return to try more menu items, but mainly dessert and hot chocolate! The only downfall was the service this time around. The waiter was slow that I thought they were going to run out of the chicken special before I got to order!"

  • "A unique, trendy place to meet with friends and family. The only downside would be poor signage, we passed it twice but finally found it."

  • "Went for family birthday dinner - 5 people - main server didn't want to be there - other staff attentive. Appetizers - pretzel and cheese pretty good, mac and cheese recomm. by server simply cheese sauce poured over mac. - skip it. Dinner - lonely 3 scallops on a large plate, uninteresting. Crab cake sandwich pretty good. Duck breast good - supporting chestnut puree and vegetables bland. Beef Bourguinon - awful rendition - root vegetables not fully cooked, beef no flavor, sauce that was a transparent broth with no hint of wine and little flavor. Tried several hot chocolates - all excellent. Wine and beer choices were good quality. Food too uneven to recommend for dinner. Certainly very good for late drink and hot chocolate night cap."

  • "delicious! We shared the meatball & polenta appetizer. The meatballs &sauce were some of the best we've had in the city. My spouse, who isn't a huge polenta fan, loved it. I had the pappardelle with kale pesto and butternut squash while he had the poussin. The pasta was cooked well, al dente. the sauce had great flavor, nothing overpowering. My spouse's chicken was very good. It was served with potatoes, green olives, capers and raisins. You wouldn't think those items would go together, but they gave the potatoes a sweet-briny taste."

  • "Went here with my parents for a dessert outing. It was a very enjoyable experience again. Hot chocolate+marshmallow+one of the delicately composed desserts (wedding cake), need I say more!"

  • "The usual sparkling flavors, surprising combinations are yesterday's Hot Chocolate. Dinner was a disappointment: pork belly salad just a couple of pork slabs on greens, neither good nor bad, crab sandwich a mushy pass and a surprisingly bad burger. Server was knowledgeable, but the food ideas and execution has lost my interest."
