Diner Reviews
  • "nice little gem recommended to us by locals on recent visit -- wonderful and pleasant lunch, great desserts and hot chocolate"

  • "Went here for desserts on a Sunday night after dinner elsewhere. Surprised to find it about half full. As usual, the desserts were fantastic; the toast ice cream was the best I've ever had. The server could omit her two references to the James Beard Award. Fast, good coffee service."

  • "While it wasn't crowded while we were there after a theatrical matinee I can see this place bouncin'. Food, drinks and service was great. I have been recommending it to everyone I see and hope to be back soon."

  • "While Hot Chocolate is a favorite spot when we're in the city, we were disappointed in the service this time. We've enjoyed our visits numerous times previously, but it was different this time. The food was magnificent (as usual) and the place was absolutely buzzing, but we felt invisible for much of our visit. Our table was available fairly closely to our reservation time, but it took a full fifteen minutes for the wait staff to get to us after we were seated. Once the food was brought, in a reasonable enough time, it was a long time before anyone came back to check on us. I had the feeling as we left, "well, at least we're getting out of their hair". Unfortunately, we'll think twice about returning."

  • "From the petite salad with this unforgettable vinaigrette to the house made pasta squares to the wonderful strawberry cheesecake and hot chocolate, I was mildly surprised at the caliber of food served here. I heard it was good but this was amazing. Can't wait to come back here and try some other dishes. Or to try brunch."

  • "I discovered Hot Chocolate on Food Network several years ago and had been dying to try it ever since. Our dinner was fabulous. My husband had duck; I had whitefish. We took our five year old daughter who had a gourmet mac n cheese. The place was very active so our daughter and her energy didn't feel out of place. By far our best meal while in Chicago. You must stay for dessert. We ordered a glass of hot chocolate (there are many varieties) with 1/3 hot fudge (!) and the medium hot chocolate mix (and homemade marshmallow). Pure genius! We also ordered brioche donuts with caramel sauce. The staff was unbelievably kind, knowledgeable, and lovely. The neighborhood is wonderful, too, if you have time to stick around."

  • "Our waiter arrived immediately, but seemed like he was putting on an act. This was confirmed as the night went on as he kept using phony catchphrases. We ordered the cheddar muffins to start; they were brought out quickly and were delicious. For our main, we had crab cakes and a lamb wrap. The crab cakes were good; they weren't great, but this is coming from people who lived in Maine. However, the lamb wrap was greasy, tough and unappealing almost to the point of in-edibility. If it wasn't for the spicy mustard that went with it, I wouldn't have gotten past two bites. Also, the main took 30 mins. to arrive. The restaurant is famous for its desserts, but after the long wait for the main, we didn't want to wait for desserts."

  • "The host was sweet, taking drink orders from the very tiny waiting area. But that was ,sadly, the best service we received all night. It took 10 min for our server to acknowledge us. After ordering, or server said no more than 3 words to us the entire evening, even when laying down or check. The food itself was great, especially the Mac and cheese! I was a little underwhelmed with the burger which was supposed to be one of the best in Chicago:( but the crab cake sandwich was delicious and rich with crabmeat. And of course, the hot chocolate is heavenly. I would come back with guests, if I get a different server"

  • "We went recently for my birthday with a group of 7. They were very accommodating when we needed to change our reservation, however the great service stopped there. They brought our drinks back 2 at a time despite sitting right next to the bar and there was a span of 20 minutes between the first person getting their drink and the last. A little awkward when waiting to do a toast. The kitchen seemed slammed as well and it took a pretty long while for us to receive our overpriced dessert. I would go back for dinner, but was somewhat disappointed with the dessert selection from a place that touts that as their specialty."

  • "Four of us dined at Hot Chocolate recently. We started out with a bottle of Rose that quickly lead to two, shared the grilled squid panzanella salad and a house made pasta entree and each of us ordered an entree - including salmon, crab cake sandwich and chicken. The food was wonderful. We followed up with the donuts holes and the cheesecake. Don't miss the desserts - amazing. Beautiful night - we'll be back."

  • "Our food was fantastic, our desserts even better, and the server was perfect - helpful, knowledgeable and funny without intruding on our night. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I love Hot Chocolate! We were there last week at 5:30 for dinner. I took my daughter and niece and we all loved it. Great cocktails, fabulous burger, duck and lamb sausage wrap. Then desert! Amazing! I have been before and had difficulty with the noise level of the restaurant. Going earlier and having the doors to the restaurant open seemed to help that a lot."

  • "Been a long-time fan of HC. We don't go every month, but we're a once-a-quarter guest. Have gone every year for the past 3 years for my wife's birthday. Also recommend it often to others. That said, this past Saturday it was an off night. Two entrees were uneatable. We sent them back and asked for a burger instead, which took far longer than a burger to an unhappy table should. Mine was still not cooked to my liking, but I was so exhausted that I dealt with it. Side of cauliflower ungratin was undercooked too. Bad items were removed from the bill with an apology from the waitress, who was great. Clearly the issue was in the kitchen. Extra wine pour and coookies were appreciated, but we gonna stick with dessert/drinks only moving forward. "

  • "I took my family for dessert and we were not disappointed. The doughnuts were warm and decadent without being overpowering. The hot chocolates that we tried were exceptional. The dark chocolate hot chocolate was closer to a cream based soup than a typical hot chocolate. We had reservations that were honored immediately, but if you just stop by, it will be well worth the wait."

  • "I wanted to cry... I took my wife out for an anniversary to Hot Chocolate, she was excited when she saw the name of the place. Drinks: excellent. appetizers: decent. ordered lamb and duck. lamb looked like thick slices of bacon meat. and it was completely undercooked. duck was very good. we shared our food and my wife could not eat the lamb. she chewed it for a bit and spat it out. I took the sword. instead of making a big deal out of it and spoiling the mood of our date/outing I ate the food as is and pretended it was OK. the night was great! the food, not so much. very disappointed and will not return. Also, the wait staff was not that good. I've been here before years ago and it was TOP notch back then. now it's terrible."

  • "The food portions were way too big and heavy (lots of grease, cheese, fats). For a restaurant that specializes in desserts, the food menu should have lighter food options, more appetizers and small plates so that guests have room after dinner to experience the awesome desserts. My friend's lamb sandwich was dripping in grease (either the restaurant buys poor quality, fatty lamb or it was cooked in a ton of oil). The Mac & cheese was enough for 4 people. I looked around and saw what other people ordered and the fried chicken was huge, the burger was enormous. The only dessert we had room for was a cup of hot chocolate that we split and it was phenomenal. The best part of the meal."

  • "My husband and I fully intended on just having apps and dessert or hot chocolate, but the dinner menu was too tempting.....we ended up with 2 apps, 2 entrees.....and 2 desserts. Hey, Im pregnant :) It was delicious! Such a great atmosphere too, small local gem."

  • "My second time coming to Hot Chocolate because the first time I had such a great experience. Not impressed this time around. The food was flavorless and not exciting at all. No "ooohs" or "ahhs" here. I had the duck which I feLT lacked a sauce. My friend had the salmon and thought it was ordinary. The best dish out of the four of us was the burger. I should have gotten the $15 burger rather than spend my money on a bland duck costing me $26. The dessert choice wasn't spectacular this time around. Hot Chocolate offered donuts (which we got), cheesecake, milk and cookies and some other dessert that obviously did not stand out because I don't remember it. Donuts were good but not spectacular. SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. Waited 45 mins for our food."

  • "Whatever we order here is special. Each food options we tried was awesomely prepared. Never thought that such tasty desserts could be so light to have !!"

  • "My friend and I went here because we had heard great things about their hamburgers and desserts. We ordered the ramp biscuits to start and they were delicious! We also each had the burger. I ordered mine medium rare, she ordered hers medium. Well, they didn't come out that way. Both were well done. We informed the waiter and he apologized. We both still ate the burgers because, heck, they were still tasty! And the waiter surprised us by offering us hot chocolate for dessert free of charge. So we were impressed with the service!"

  • "From the servers to the menu to leaving room for dessert- this is a must go for any occasion! Every part of the menu is well thought out and well executed. Although small the beer list has something for everyone and their cocktails are fab as well. This is one restaurant in Chicago I have returned to time and again and it has yet to disappoint! "

  • "We all enjoyed our food very much. I had the salmon, which was amazing. We almost passed on dessert but decided to try the homemade ice cream. You MUST try the mint ice cream. It is like nothing I have ever had. It's made with fresh mint and you will never want grocery store mint ice cream again! My daughter got the medium hot chocolate. We all tasted it and have since described it as "heaven in a cup". Like no other hot chocolate I've ever had!!!"

  • "The meal was very good. The weather was great so the doors were open and the atmosphere was nice. The special was fried chicken and it was awesome. Made reservations on open table through the Hot Chocolate website and only 6PM was available. I was a bit bugged that the place was empty when we arrived and still very open when we left at a little after 7PM. I would have made a later reservation. The food is what we went there for and it did not disappoint."

  • "Me and my wife came here for a romantic evening as we were on holiday together. From the moment we stepped in to the moment we left, everything was amazing. It was one of the best meals we've eaten in ages. Keep it up!"

  • "Terrific ambiance and food. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and had impeccable service. The crowd was lively - we had a reservation at 9:30 and it was still over half full when we left two hours later. Very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food you receive, which is actually substantial versus some other restaurants I've been to. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and will be returning soon."

  • "My boyfriend and I made reservations for HotChocolate for our anniversary and greatly enjoyed ourselves. It is an excellent choice for a special occasion, and the entire dining experience was wonderful. We both tend to be picky eaters, but had no complaints about the food. And, of course, the restaurant definitely lives up to its name - we shared a Medium hot chocolate which wound up being our favorite part of the meal. We would love to return - professional, classy ambiance without being pretentious. Simple, yet refined menu with great options for everyone. Highly recommend! "

  • "The crab cake sandwich was great and filled with crab. We also had the plate of cookies that Mindy's is famous for baking, which lived up to their reputation."

  • "The food was good, not great. The service was pretty sad. Our server took our order and was not around much at all. I needed sweetener for my tea, had to wait awhile for her to come around to ask for it. I wanted salt and pepper, had to wait again for her to come around. She was not friendly, rather remote and sarcastic, obviously not happy to be working on a Sunday. Maybe it was supposed to be an über chic, haughty vibe in the place, no one looked happy to be there. It's a shame, it could be really dynamic and enjoyable dining experience if the staff lightened up. The restaurant is a little over hyped."

  • "It would be a shame to come to Hot Chocolate and not try this decadent indulgence in any of its permutations. But if one comes for the food, the experience would be just as rewarding."

  • "Hot Chocolate is unassuming from the street, but has a comfortable, welcoming vibe. Groups of families, friends, possible dates were seen. The lighting is intimate but adequate. The wait staff was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, but not obsequious. We started with a delicious cheese plate that was accompanied by a fig compote and candied almonds. And then the duck! A perfectly prepared breast lying atop spaetzle mixed with a shredded confit of duck leg. Terrific. We topped it off with a dessert called Malted Milk - homemade graham crackers, malted milk ice cream, drizzled with chocolate. Perfect!"

  • "There are so many wonderful options in Chicago but I wouldn't recommend Hot Chocolate. We had eaten there several times before and had always been pleased with experience. The shrimp salad was very skimpy on the egg, avocado and bacon and the hamburger was OK but not exceptional. The hot chocolate was exceptional as always."

  • "The hot chocolate was awesome- I tried the Mexican hot chocolate. This alone was filling. The dinner menu was limited and there wasn't anything in particular that I wanted to try. Most of our table had soup and salads. The dessert menu and hot chocolate made up for the limited choices for a meal. I would highly recommend this place for dessert."

  • "First time at Hot Chocolate. Went for lunch. Carrot ginger soup was great, just the right amount of heat from the ginger. Trout salad was outstanding, the vinaigrette made the salad. Tried a sip of my husband's Mexican Hot Chocolate, the cayenne pepper paired well with the chocolate. Will definitely be back for dinner."
