Diner Reviews
  • "I have been to Osteria del Piccolo many times...with only my husband as well as larger groups. Each experience has been wonderful. The food has been consistently delicious and the service impeccable. Each time we go my husband and I say to each other, "I love this restauarant!" My favorite things on the menu are the spaghetti with lentils and the grilled calamari appetizer. My husband loves the truffle pasta. The wine list is exceptional and the wait-staff is knowledgeable in directing you which to try. I can honestly say, Hosteria del Piccolo is one of the best restaurants in L.A."

  • "Great family find. Good for couples as well. Very different food but outstanding and fun. Price was reasonable for the area. We will definitely go back."

  • "The food is excellent and is simply presented. No frills or fluff. To me, the greatest asset is the warmth and friendliness of the staff. They really want the diners to have a happy time -- to be fulfilled and filled full, both!"

  • "Farro appetizer and all pasta dishes are superb. Stuffed chicken and fish are great too. Delightful Gavi. Excellent cup of coffee Americano. All staff are very pleasant and helpful."

  • "There are only a handful of restaurants in LA that I continue to come back to. Hostaria is friendly and consistent. The staff goes out of there way to be nice. The best part about this place is their food, also consistent, but more importantly extremely tasty. And on top of that it is reasonably priced for the high quality food. Mixed cocktails are expensive, but they seem to be that way everywhere now."

  • "We had a family party of six go for dinner. The restaurant is busy and we noted that it is very noisy, so if you are looking for a quiet place to talk, this is not it. But, if you don't mind the noise and and looking for some good food, you won't go wrong here. Each and every course was enjoyed by all from the salads to the soup, appetizers, side dishes, entrées and dessert. The ambience and setting for the restaurant is pleasant. It is somewhat dark. The main reason for a rating of 3 stars for the ambiance was only because of the noise. There seems to be a lot of reflected noise that elevates the overall level of noise in the restaurant."

  • "Upscale restaurant that serves small plates. Unique personal pizzas...liked the grilled octopus appetizer!"

  • "This was the second time we've been here! Spent a three hour lunch the first time. This time we came for dinner. Loved the octopus appetizer! My son had the quail again! I also loved the frico! Calamari and shrimp rounded out the first course! Hubby and I shared the pasta putanesca and I skipped right to dessert. Hubby went for the stuffed chicken - it did not disappoint! Our son ordered two orders of the tagliatelle and his friend had the pasticci. Dessert was great as well! The wines recommended went perfectly with our choices. We'll be back!"

  • "Have dined there prior to this time. Only had a salad for lunch which was not real interesting as a stand alone "entree." Verde - greens and a couple of slices of avocado."

  • "had a late lunch with an out of town guest and friend with the wife. this is a terrific place for the late afternoon lunch, ie 3pm. they are open, not crowed, no noise and the food is super..calamari, salad, pasta...life is good and feels and tastes good..treat yourself...work through lunch and take a late break (play hookey) and you will be happy, happy, happy."

  • "Went out on a date it was a bit loud inside so we sat out side and it was much quieter so we we're both able to talk to reach other. I love that the canopy was plastic we we're both able to see the beautiful full moon while we ate that made it more romantic! I did love I was able to make a reservation through yelp that was perfect for us!"

  • "I took my northern italian parents for dinner. The waitress was charming and knowledgeable. All the food is fantastic and very authentic. My parents can be harsh critics since they come from the region of Italy this restaurant is known for. Small complaint is don't come famished as the portions are a bit small. They are very flavorful so if you really slow down to taste you will appreciate. Portions feel like tapas but priced more like entree size. Very interesting wine list."

  • "Liked it, but service could've been a little hotter - started clearing away plates too soon, and couldn't add prosciutto to a salad - wtf?"

  • "The food is always first rate, but I like even more the service - esp if I get a chance to practice my Italian!"

  • "Great food and service. Way too loud inside. Outside is more hospitable for peple who actually like to talk to each other over dinner."

  • "Good food, but don't expect to talk or listen here. The classic Italian films distract you from the permanent hearing loss and even keep you from appreciating excellent pasta. We won't return, but take-out is an option."

  • "Always have a nice dinner at Hostaria. Service is always good, everyone is nice, and the food is wonderful. Have yet to have something I didn't enjoy. Becoming one of my favorite spots for dinner."

  • "It was our first time. We loved their food. They have good portion of food. Service was excellent. It was difficult to find parking even at 5 pm."

  • "have been to hostaria several times from large group to table for 2 and this was dine la jan 2014....the food, as usual, was very good, the room noisy, and the service professional and attentive. the only misgiving was that the food was served very, very fast and indeed first course arrived before our drink order and then the main course came while still eating the first. maybe they wanted to flip the table 3 times for our early sat evening reservation. on the other hand everything was yummy, ie warm cheese, salad, chicken, pastas and sweets. was good value and fine food....of course will be back."

  • "We came here for DineLA Sunday night. The food is solid--the ricotta stuffed chicken and the tiramisu were standouts. But what was surprising was that the prices were much less than you would expect from the upscale decor. Great spot to meet friends in downtown Santa Monica!"

  • "The food is alway's fantastic and the service is beyond wonderful! The entire staff makes you feel welcome and it adds to warmth of the environment, everyone there treats all diners as though they are truly appreciated and special!"

  • "This was our third visit - to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were there three weeks ago to celebrate my husband's birthday. Everything we've ordered so far has been outstanding - from the pigs ears, fried calamari, veal chop, pasta (one of our friends who has celiac disease was glad to see some gluten-free pastas on the menu), steak was perfect, and of course the desserts."

  • "I love almost everything about this modern neighborhood Italian, from the delicious food to the reasonable prices, but why must there be big screen TV's everywhere? It killed the atmosphere for me, though admittedly not for my date who watched football the whole time."

  • "My husband and I came here for our anniversary in May and again in January for his birthday. The service was over the top, as was the food. We would come more often but we don't live in Santa Monica. This time we brought some friends."

  • "The octopus is a must have! Very busy place and the service was excellent, informed waiter was very helpful and every dish was tasty and prompt. They have their stuff together here! Highly recommend!"

  • "I went on New Year's Eve. Perhaps it was just that they were busy, or that it was a holiday, but I was disappointed in the food & ambience. It was fine -- not bad, not great by any means. Gluten free pasta and pizza were a hit with my GI friends though!"

  • "Originally we were going to another restaurant but found out they don't serve lunch. Well, lucky for us we went here instead. Food and service were spectacular. We had kids and they even accommodated the special pizzas for their tastes. Great friendly staff."

  • "We had dinner there with our kids. The staff was really nice and friendly with each one of us. They gave us good suggestions about food, that wes really good. Starting form appetizers to the dessert, everything perfect. Baccalà, tagliatelle, gnocchi. If you are in Santa Monica you can't miss it."

  • "There are way too many Italian Restaurant out there but not many that truly offer a pretty authentic flavor - that brings you back to your trips to Northern Italy! Food was served fast and fresh. I particularly like the pig's ear appetizer we received, crispy and tasty. Everyone's steak on the table was served to everybody's delight! and the servers were all friendly and accommodating considering we had am infant with us."

  • "Food was very good as always. We really enjoy Hosteria in Santa Monica. Can get a little noisy for conversation but overall it is a good place to have a delicious meal all the time. Friendly and knowledgeable servers has been our experience every time we have gone."

  • "wife and i went to hostaria on a blackboard eats code; it was fun and the food was very good. started with grilled calamari which was tender and tasty and then on to sea bass and veal milanase (spelling) with salad and dessert. the sea base was cooked perfectly as was the veal. the ingredients are very fresh..best veal have had in ages since it was not oily or dry. the basic salad was yummy although the dessert faltered. My "plane" cocktail was delicious. Will go back again and suggest to others that if you are in the westside this is wonderful local dining in an attractive space."

  • "The range of dishes on the menu was very varied including a great bacalao which is not often seen. The pizza was great also. Wine maybe a bit pricey but overall good value. Atmosphere was lively and a good mix of diners. Walking distance from Ocean Drive so good not to need the car."

  • "This is my new favorite place to get Italian food that is closest to the food I ate while traveling to Italy. They have daily specials that are dishes you don't normally see in Italian restaurants in the US but are very common in Italy. The food was very good, the wait staff was very nice. The ambiance is nothing like typical Italian restaurants in the US. As it got more crowded, it got loud. the Bar seems very popular and it was a Friday night. We are going back tonight to get the bucatini all'amatriciana, which was one of our favorite dishes in Rome. I had the Cacio e Pepe the first time I was there and it was not like they make it in Rome. It had butter instead of just oil and pecorino cheese which is how they prepare it in Rome."

  • "Much too noisy for us 'old folk.' Though there were numerous tables for 4, we were only offered a quite narrow 2-hander jammed in between two large tables jammed with loud talkers. Huh!! We ended up in the patio, alone except for one other couple who were seated towards the end of our meal. It was a Friday night so...what should one expect....I guess. The food was more than adequate but perhaps a bit too pricey. I'd go again for lunch, if in the neighborhood, but not for dinner."

  • "From the first greeting to the goodbye, all the staff were really wonderful. Food was quite good, though I did have them redo my Linguini Nero because I didn't want the garlic; and they were very gracious about it. My lunch partner ABSOLUTELY LOVED his Duck Ragu Pappardelle. For all of the above, plus the very nice vibe and good prices, I'm looking forward to returning."

  • "This little gem of a spot delivers brilliant food and welcoming service. A healthy take on traditional Italian cuisine. The detail taken in decor and presentation is Italian beauty at it's simplistic best. Not trying to impress, but rather simply impressing. Fresh pasta and flavourful ingredients. The dessert menu offered some riffs on the classics, and the BIGNÓLE is not to be missed! A presto."
