Diner Reviews
  • "We weren't sure about brunch here, but we loved it and will be back. The quality of the produce stood out. My only negative, was the french toast, it was fried and a bit heavy with caramel sauce, my daughters couldn't eat it, although the waitress said most people love it. I had an eggs benedict and the hollandaise was one of the best i'd had in los angeles. We also ordered off their main menu. We plan to make this our regular go to brunch spot."

  • "I have been a fan of these owner's restaurants for years and ultimately fell in love when I visited their first restaurant Piccolo back when it was a tiny little place that only had a handful of tables. It was my birthday and the guy I was dating took me there because he knew my affinity for good Italian food. Unfortunately, right when our food came he was forced to take a call from his work which he had to take outside. The owner saw his food just sitting there getting cold and took it upon himself to grab his plate and bring it back to the kitchen. He ended up having them re-make it so it was hot and fresh when my date came back. How many places in L.A. can you say would do that?!"

  • "Nice and quiet with retro cartoons playing on the big screen for the early morning brunch crowd. Long bench seating makes it super fun for little ones to climb about. Wait staff was friendly, informative and helpful. Food was delicious and drinks were great. Would definitely go back."

  • "Very good, just a tad expensive for the value for lunch or brunch."

  • "Really impressed with their pastas. The spinach pappardelle with duck ragu was only slightly outshone by their gnocchi because the gnocchi was like butter! It just melted in your mouth. Will definitely go back again!"

  • "Hostaria has two locations, this one and another in Santa Monica. Although I enjoy the Santa Monica restaurant a bit more, this one is also excellent. It's located really close to the beach so that's a huge plus. The service is great every time we go, I'd recommend it for sure."

  • "The bacala will transport you back to that little wine bar in Venice, Italy where you stood at the bar with your "spritz" and sampled the accompanying bar snacks."

  • "Food was good but expensive. Menu limited. Extremely noisy inside but energetic crowd. Really good Italian beers particularly the artisan beers."

  • "I met a friend for dinner. I had eaten in the Santa Monica restaurant and enjoyed the food. We went early enough and sat at one of the tables away from the TV screen.. The service was good, waiters, friendly, and most importantly, the food was delicious. There is something for everyone. The ambiance was comfortable enough, not posh, just comfy.. I would recommend to a friend for dinner and a chat, Rose Ave now reminds me of Puerta Vallarta Mexico. Take an out of town guest."

  • "Rude waiters, horrible service, mediocre food for a high price."

  • "Tasty and unusual combinations -- especially from the bar -- will surely satisfy the most adventurous drinker and the bean soup is suprisingly filling and delicious."

  • "The food is really special. But the noise level can be very irritating. The should get rid of the tv screen in the bar, as it creates more noise and takes the ambiance down a notch."

  • "The staff welcomed us as soon as we arrived, friendly smiles from everyone. We were seated in their outside area where they had heater for the cooler nights. The staff was attentive even when we sent them away three times waiting for the rest of our party. The food was delivered fast and was really good. I had the rigatoni and it was delicious. I hope to go back soon."

  • "We had an issue with parking (our mistake) and the server had the manager come over and he said no problem, and 2 hours later had someone come over with the solution. Great service. Great food."

  • "If you want a solid Venetian style Italian meal, you cannot go wrong with Hostaria del Piccolo. They have enough interesting dishes on the menu to set them apart from the many other Italian places. The ambiance is neat and clean, but it is not romantic. Happy hour prices are very good and the food is priced fairly too. Portions are "just right" for main courses like pastas and pizzas. It would be a good place for a bite before or after an activity."

  • "When we arrived on time for our reservation, they had given our table away so we sat at the bar. Which was better because we slightly hear each other. The noise is deafening. The arugula salad was good but I found the white pizza with mushrooms and pesto was too heavy. My friend actually tried the french fry pizza. I thought it was ridiculous, but she was very happy. Our waitress could not have been nicer. I will not go back unless the sound problem is fixed."

  • "We were rewarded with a free appetizer by simply reserving our table ahead of time. Thanks for the good food and great service. Great addition to the neighborhood. The restaurant is very noisy on a busy Saturday night, which made conversation interesting... concrete floors, wood booths and industrial finish doesn't allow for absorbing the loud bustle. I will go to Piccolo on Dudley for a quiet dinner with my mother and Hosteria with friends for fun on a Saturday eve."

  • "I loved the restaurant. The owner was very gracious and welcoming and the servers were wonderful and very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. Great cocktails and fabulous dining. I highly recommend Hosteria del Piccolo."

  • "The place is extremely noisy causing one to almost shout to be heard across the table. We ate in the outside area and had this problem. Inside the bar area looked like it would be even noisier. Unfortunately these levels of noise diminish the eating experience as its hard to like the food when the noise level borders on a headache. I tried the barramundi fish special, but there was nothing special about it. The fish was just grilled, and good that way but no special sauce so what's special? The fish soup special however was very good. This place would be fine for off hours when there are few people there, otherwise its great for the loud and trendy set who come to visit."

  • "The brunch here is seriously fantastic. So full of flavor. Will be going back again and again and again!"

  • "We ordered several different plates, and most of them were a miss. The grilled calamari was tough to chew. When calamari cooked properly it's very tender and easy to eat. Too much salt. Grilled octopus - the same story. Some pieces were tough, some not. Squid ink pasta - it swam in oil and did not taste home made. Eel was a good dish, though polenta was pretty much packed with oil. A pizza that we got was not bad, but nothing spectacular. Overall, I felt the food was unhealthy, extremely heavy and over-salted. I will not be back."

  • "There's a nice energy around this place. Service is friendly & efficient, the food is consistently solid, and the beer/wine/cocktail list is extensive. Portions are large and easy to share, which adds to the vibrant social atmosphere, and makes the menu accessible to those looking to avoid spending a ton of money. Parking is also a breeze--if you can't find street parking on Rose or any side streets, the restaurant will validate for the underground lot below the building. The menu isn't necessarily the most authentically Italian, so if you're looking for a real mamma and papa experience, you may want to go elsewhere. However, the ingredients are supremely fresh, and with a 3-peat attendance, I've only had good meals. Overall, I say go!"

  • "The food is great as well as the service. We are regulars and love it every time we go... HOWEVER the noise level is out of control, therefore we try to go on the early side before it is impossible to talk."

  • "One of my regular hangouts. Food is always good. Yes, it can be crazy loud, but that is part of the vibe. Sit on the patio and it's quite mellow. And ya gotta love the Italians as hosts. Christian treats everybody like they are family."

  • "Admittedly, we were a trio of picky eaters. One gluten-free and one with many allergies. That said, being that the place is in Venice, you'd expect the wait staff to expect this kind of airy fairyness. THEY DID NOT. Waiter had no idea what was gluten-free, what was sugar-free, or why there were three dogs triangulating around our table. Yes, dogs. I said Venice so maybe I'm the out of touch party here, but 7pm on a Friday night is not when I'd expect to be stepping over gigantic slobbering (or small yipping) dogs. The food was mostly good. Stick with the appetizers. We had the rigatoni), ricottina appetizer ( both delish) and several pizzas (the aspargi should be renamed the frisbee because it could have served as one)."

  • "We enjoyed having lunch with DineLA menu there. It was a good deal, all dishes were good quality. We'll visit again."

  • "the deep fat fried calamari and shrimp were very good and very generously portioned. the pasta with broccoli was good, but not worth the drive."

  • "My, friends and I went for the Dine LA deal (a great deal if you can make it this week) and everything we had was wonderful. Food was great (lovely gnocchi pillows!) and amazing tiramisu! I can walk here, so I've been many times and have never been disappointed. However, it is not an ideal romantic date spot, as the decor seems to just amplify the already boisterous noise level of the crowd. And there's always a crowd. Please park in Hostaria's building for the sanity of all of the Venice neighbors and drive at a safe speed on Rose!!"

  • "This place never disappoints. Consistently delicious food and great ambiance. Have eaten here with just my bf and also with groups of friends. We love this place. It's not very often that we are impressed by service in the area...but the manager and owners definitely deliver here. We appreciate that they also get involved and stay on top of their team to ensure that guests are attended to."

  • "Trendy, cute spot with creative yummy foods. Lots of fun combinations for the pizzas along with the classics, and the pastas were delicious. Waitstaff was attentive and knowledgable."

  • "It was our first time visiting. We went with friends not knowing what to expect and our typically high expectation was met. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We loved the food and the atmosphere was fun."

  • "We sat down inside at 6:30 and could hear each other talking. By 7:30 we were yelling across the table. Our dinner companions had eaten on the patio before and said the noise is never an issue. The Calamari and Shrimp appetizer is the best I've ever had but our pasta special, Pasta con vongole was too greasy, undercooked and very stingy with the clams. Our friends both got the fish and seemed happy with it. The bread is the best thing on the table. Fresh, crispy crust and light on the inside."

  • "Really good food, I recommend the Piña pizza or the Tagnatelle."

  • "The food here is great, but good Lord is it expensive! Even for Venice this place jacks a huge check. We had two naked entrees, a shared bowl of soup and a single dessert, and the total bill was $120. No wine, no drinks! Wonderful service, great ambience, Bene! But pricey!"
    Dined on 1/1/2014
  • "The appetizers are delicious. My favorites are the ricotta and the seared calamari. Any pizza you order will not disappoint and the pastas are fresh. If anything there are too many good dishes to choose from."

  • "Pleasant service and very good -- but not great -- food. Noise was unbearable. The four of us could not talk to each other without shouting. Even the waitress had to shout."
    Dined on 12/5/2013
  • "Ambiance was nice. Personnel were attentive, however food unfortunately wasn't...the only dish we enjoyed was one of the dessert we ordered, which I don't recall the name right now, but it had a mixture of nutella spread and bananas. Their coffee was good also. Food definitely needs improvement...."

  • "The noise level is intense, and the seating arrangements inside are rather claustrophobic. But the patio is quite nice, as are the waitstaff. The food is good, although never tipping over to great. All-in-all, if you're looking for solid Italian on the westside, this isn't a bad option."

  • "Super crowded and noisy but we got seated fairly quickly. Excellent food and good service despite the fact that they were slammed. fun, xlnt food - worth the visit."
