A word from Hospoda
Hospoda presents a menu of beer-inspired cuisine. It's a first-in-New York culinary experience. These New American dishes are created by chef Rene B. Stein and prepared using beer or its primary ingredients in various creative ways. Each dish is meant to be paired with the purest and freshest Czech Pilsner Urquell, local craft beers, and selected European and American wines.

Hospoda is part of the Ambiente Group which was founded in 1995. The Ambiente Group now includes two successful brands, Ambiente and Lokal, and 13 restaurants, primarily located in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. The Ambiente Group includes fine dining establishments, casual dining restaurants, stylish cafes and pubs.

  • "Chose this restaurant due to the Zagat and NYTimes and others. Very nice that it is under the Czech building. Art work and ambience were modern and imagninative. We went on a Monday night and it was quiet but the food was outstanding (poached egg/lobster appetizer, special trout dish, chocolate cake desert), the wine choices excellent. We were also given some neat small samples that were inventive. Also, I had a cucumber soda that was great!! Everyone was attentive and super cordial. My guest who is from Europe and a world traveler thought it was very special. We will be back for sure."

  • "Picked Hospoda during recent NYC overnight. Stepped up to the 7 course Chef's Tasting with the beer matching by course. All dishes were truly exceptional. Visually stunning with creative technique, each dish offered distinctly layered flavors and textures. Courses included the poached egg with Lobster (often mentioned by other reviewers), as well as sweetbreads, fluke, duck and scallops. The beer flight matching was an amazing eye opener (I was reluctant). Czech oriented but including domestic craft brews, each sampling was delicious, and matched the food courses exceptionally well. Presentation in wine glasses shoed off the colors and carbonation of each beer. Service was expert and laid back, but with impeccable timing."

Food price was tad expensive but delicious...we will back, and no added cab ride expense for us. Exceptional service. The duck and fillet mignonette were melt in the mouth experience...all good!"

  • "I came here for restaurant week with my boyfriend. I absolutely loved it. Everything was amazing. The staff treated you like you were royalty and the food was exquisite! Every bite was amazing.   • "I took a date here for Restaurant Week, as we walked in we had no idea what to expect, but we were happy we decided on this spot. The waiters were knowledgable about the dishes and drinks menu, they serve a Pilsner Urquell 4 different ways and he helped explain the difference (mostly being the amount of head when poured). I ordered a Greenport Porter and she had a glass of wine, both were exactly as the wait staff described and perfect for our dinner needs. She had the Poached Egg and I had the Arctic Char to start, both were flavorful and tasty! For the main I had the Beef Tenderloin and she had the Ferro Risotto, personally I liked the Risotto more, but the Beef was excellent as well. We also had dessert and it was very memorable!"

  • "Food was creative and beautifully plated. Who would think an entree consisting 95% of just carrots could be so special? Try the pilsner 4 ways - it's a treat. Our server was kind, knowledgable and relatable. I'd return for the great service alone. If you're a foodie you'll find hospoda worthy of a visit. Be sure to try the lobster appetizer. Do be aware - the portions are quite small so you'll want to try several courses. Overall we're lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber on the upper east side."

  • "Restaurant Week is a chance to showcase the establishment and to encourage new customers who otherwise might be deterred from (in this case, the very expensive) normal menu. The stingy portions, lack of choice for the desert, very expensive wine list, etc.,etc, and so forth, are unlikely to appeal to anybody, even those who live in the immediate neighborhood like us. We were hoping that this could become one of our regular places."

  • "We tend to eat locally as we have kids and want to make the most of our date nights but we have been on the lookout for something different from our regular spots in the neighbourhood. This was a great find - the food is excellent and a cut above most of the UES options, the service was gracious and we loved the wine pairings (and the flexibility to adjust these as we wanted). The only downside to our evening was the couple near us loudly and obnoxiously negotiating their prenup. Other than that, we will definitely be back."

  • "Sometimes when u go to a restaurant , and the vibe is good u don't pay attention to the food.. Hence the recommendation from a friend that This place was great and a new find. Really disappointed , the menu was very limited, the food prepared was so over layered with ingredients the fish was lost.. It was just too much of an attempt to be creative , it was way overworked. My guest could not eat her trout, it was so overcooked it looked undercooked , it wasn't, thats just the way it was prepared, not pleasing to the eye. The restaurant ambience is nice and good for talking which is always great, and the staff was great...but the menu absolutely needs to be reworked in my opinion ."

  • "We went on a snowy night so the restaurant was fairly empty. We decided to try the Chef's Tasting Menu and the accompanying beer pairings. It was not cheap, but the menu was well thought out and the courses came quickly. Overall we had a nice time and had great service (perhaps almost trying too hard)."

  • "This has now become our favorite restaurant in NYC. My partner is a beer connoisseur and was extremely impressed as well. From start to finish the staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive. The presentation was beautiful, and the pairings were divine. The atmosphere was chic without being pompous. We've been talking about how much we loved our date there since we left 2 days ago. We had the Beef Tartare appetizer with a barley wine and a hefewiezen, followed by our entrees: the duck and the beef tenderloin. For dessert we had the apple cinnamon egg nog choice and the pina colada choice (I forget the actual name of the desserts). Again, we were thoroughly pleased, and we will definitely be recommending this to our friends."

  • "The service and ambience were excellent. Howeever, they hired anew chef some 6 mopnths ago, andheis still working out the kinks from the changes in their menu. There was a battle between beautiful presentation and sizable portions. Sadly, the presentation has prevaled, and in my view protion control was not sufficient for a normal person. When we mentioned this to the manager and maitre d' they insisted on giving us another service, with complementary wines. As the manger said, no one should leave their restaurant hungry. This alone merits going back for another dinner to see if the balance between presentaton and portion control has shifted."

The welcoming service, perfect wine/beer pairing, timing & presentation of the food, delectable combinations, textures & flavors, etc. was more than exceptional. Hospoda is working on their Michelin star and no doubt will achieve it! Hospoda beats Le Bernadin hands down in every category! The food & parings were interesting & memorable. I think I said "Mmmmmm" with every bite & sip I took! Unbelievably fantastic experience. We felt like special guests. We highly, highly recommend this restaurant -- it's the best restaurant experience we've had in over 10 years! (and we dine out a lot!)"

The place is described in various media as a Czech restaurant, and we expected goulashy things, but found instead that the Czech influence is very understated. Dishes were creative, sophisticated, but not fussy. The servers, and greeters, were enthusiastic and charming. My only ding: The noise level. Quite loud."

I came a while back before they revamped the menu and remember the food being a little better. This time it was perfectly edible, but nothing spectacular.
