A word from Hopmonk Tavern - Sonoma
An 1888 Farmhouse with a 2010 renovation including a rustic tavern, outdoor dining deck, and expansive beer garden. We love being a Beer Place in the Wine Country. Come to HopMonk for fresh seasonal draft beer, tasty meals, local wines, rustic tavern atmosphere, a beautiful deck and beer garden, fine live music. Beer is fun; we know you'll enjoy our relaxed and informed service. We love large groups and accommodate them on a daily basis. You can expect to find creative live music; solo, combo and trio on a regular basis this winter. In the spring we'll host daytime headliner music every weekend from the Beer Garden. Beer dinners hosted by owner Dean Biersch (Gordon Biersch co-founder) are a monthly feature.

We had lunch on the patio on a sunny day, under the shade of an umbrella. I had my dog, and the server promptly brought a water bowl for him. The patio is lovely with an attractive firepit, umbrella tables far enough apart for privacy, several fountains, and a decomposed granite surface. We selected salads for lunch reasonably priced, $11 and under. Mine was a citrus salad with greens and pistachios and was very good, though using canned mandarin oranges, but fresh grapefruit, with a lovely citrusy dressing and perfectly grilled chicken. My friend had the Caesar salad, reported as being average. Service was prompt, friendly, and unobtrusive. With empty tables we lingeredr for an hour or so and never felt pressured to leave.

Food was mediocre - they really need a new, better chef who cares about the ingredients. Fries are reconstituted potatoes instead of sliced fresh potatoes, for example. Hamburger was cooked at too high a temp, which made the outer portion tough by the time the inner part was done. Calamari coating didn't taste fresh, although the dish including delicious fried vegies and fried lemon slices. Don't sit at a table on the lower level outside next to the upper level - you will be dining next to people's feet and the rest of the lower half of their bodies. ICK. Beer is the thing here - tons of great beers, and even Ace hard cider, which is the best.

This was our second trip to Hopmonk. All 5 of us were very happy with our seafood (2 salmon, 2 fish&chips, 1 mussels). Generous portions, especially the mussels, all cooked very nicely unlike a prior experience with the bratwurst. Pleasant weather made the outdoor tables very inviting though we ate inside at a booth this time, maybe a mistake. Their strength remains outstanding draft beer/bottled beer selections and very good food at a fair price. Friendly wait staff but not really that attentive.

This was our second time going to Hop Monk and the beer & food was still great! We did however sit at a different table to the right of the hostess area where we could hear everyone's conversations and was a little too loud for our liking! The table we sat at the previous visit was in the bay-view window area and highly recommend requesting those tables for couples or people who want to hear their conversations! We will defiantly go back again but request a table in the bay window area! Still one of our favorite places in Sonoma!

To say they have lots of great beers is an understatement! A great place for beer, food, and to hang out with local classy people! I don't like to say negative things, and for the most part I love this place- especially the staff; but I don't get the deserts. The two I've had, the cheesecake, and "Death by chocolate, were oversized, and not very tasty! Each one could have been cut in half, and they could add a scoop of ice cream to the DBC, and maybe some fudge sauce, and it would be perfect! Overall, this place, with live music at night is a great local hang out; and Chef Billy is great!

This was my third time at Hopmonk. Twice I had lunch which was very good and pleasant. Tis time I went for dinner with 2 other people. We had good service, very friendly and the food was good as well, but it is so noisy we had trouble having a conversation. There were a lot of younger 20 somethings, 30 somethings, that were very loud. If you want a very reasonably priced, good meal AND talk, go early or not on a Friday/Saturday night.

We are locals and loved that Hopmonk came to town. We will continue to visit, as we love the atmosphere and the food is quite good. Only one disappointment . . . they are a bit pricy for the type of "comfort" food they are serving. Typically, you think of a "tavern" being a bit more reasonable - we felt an over $50 lunch for 3 was expensive (that was 3 meals, 2 beers & a coke - nothing before, no dessert).

Energetic location in an otherwise pretty quiet town. Lots of fun. Good sized portions of food of solid quality. Servers are very nice and know the food. The service pattern could be a bit smoother, but everyone works hard and tries hard. I'm sure this will continue to improve with time.

We just wanted to try out the food before going to a concert. I had the mussels which is "served" beautifully but the sauce had NO flavor but, the mussels were cooked perfect. We also shared the Portabello mushroom sandwich which had some strange red tangy sauce that ruined it. The fries are really good. We will NOT go back for the food but maybe a beer in the summer.

The Hopmonk Tavern was a fun place to end a day of wine touring. It is a traditional tavern setting, off the "tourist" track, with a menu to suit everyone. The "cheese trio" was a good start, with assorted cheeses, fresh fruit and sourdough toast. My grilled chicken and spinach salad was excellent and included fresh tomatoes, homemade bacon bits and a light blue cheese dressing. My husband enjoyed his batter dipped fish fry which included tavern fries and cole slaw. The service was fine, although the soup I ordered was not delivered. We finished up with profiteroles filled with ale infused creams - one portion was plenty to split. We enjoyed them but the ale flavor was quite strong and might not suit everyone.

Good pub food. If you like garlic (which I do) the regular or sweet potato garlic fries are amazing!! The only real negative to this Tavern is that the noise level is through the roof (both times that I have been there). It may be the noisiest restaurant that I have ever been to. You have to yell at your dining mates in order to hear. It is probably better at less busy times, but they should really do something about the deafening acoustics.

Warm sunny day, great food, and excellent service - I was apprehensive about going here as I thought it was more of a Pub. Kind of looks that way inside but it’s quite an upscale one. The food was not only quick but fabulous and very tasty. My husband had the mussels and fries and they were probably the plumpest most flavorful mussels we’d had I a long time. (Yes I stole some! They were too good!) The Girl and the Fig sells a similar dish but in no way as plump or as many I might add. There was about 3 dozen in the pot they were served in. My Caesar salad with prawns was the perfect about of dressing and great croutons. I would definitely go back and highly recommend.

Food was very good and reasonable prices. Beer menu was impressive, but wine selection very poor (it's a beer place for sure!)Service was a bit slow...our waitress seemed overwhelmed. The room to the left of the bar with the alcove was ABSOLUTELY unbearably noisy and NOT the place to sit if you are a small party trying to converse. Seems like the restaurant sits the big drinkers/talkers in the alcove area and the sound reverberates.Several other diners were irritated with the noise level the two times we've been there. All in all, a fun Sonoma spot.

I tried the House samosa's to only find that their filling was minimal and 1/2 of the order was blown apart from the deep frying. Where was the plate management on this appetizer? I waived my waitress over to show her this and she agreed to replace them. The next batch were not blown-out, yet lacked the lack-luster flavored filling. The entree' featured mustard mashed potato's that I found hard to determine the mustard flavor. The Brats were great as was the slaw served with them. Try their Rueben with Sweet potato fries.

We had lunch on a gorgeous, sunny, January day and were able to sit out on the front deck. The remodel to the building turned out great. There are plastic curtains around the deck to block the wind but it seemed like it would seem like a shower curtain surrounding us, so we chose a table up against the building with no shower curtain. Very nice. I'm following a gluten free, dairy free diet and was pleased to be able to order a grilled portabello mushroom sandwich, hold the bread, hold the cheese, which came with a huge green salad with balsamic dressing. Delicious. My friend had a huge caesar salad and the lollipop lambchops. It was a lovely lunch. They were even willing to split the bill on credit cards 2/3, 1/3.

Visiting Sonoma and want a casual lunch spot? We had a reservation, although it wasn't necessary during the lunch hour. The place was empty save for a few small groups that arrived shortly before us. By the time we finished lunch, the place was packed and highly energetic. The food is upscale bar food. Try the Samosas as a table appetizer. The chicken sandwich is great and tasty; the fries aren't anything to rave about. The soup I hear was thick but good. The salads also looked fresh.
