  • "I never write reviews, but I'd been looking forward to going to HF. Overall, it was disappointing. A very limited menu. The food was ok. We waited 50 minutes between our app course and main course and the seats were very uncomfortable. I was sitting on a wooden bench and the backrest was the wall. Basically, the quality of the experience was not consistent with the level of pricing."

  • "The food and the service were great. My only comment was that when I ordered a cheese selection from their menu--Australian blue cheese which was delicious and a very generous portion--I was asked if I wanted bread to go with it at an extra charge!! I order cheese plates in most restaurants and it usually comes with either crackers, dried fruit or something to put the cheese on. I have never been given just a chunk of cheese (with candied almonds)."

  • "We went because this restaurant was identified as one of the best new places in the city and it was just okay. Service and servers were quite casual and the price point for dinner was not - service level didn't seem to match the menu options or prices... the food itself was a bit hit and miss... the cheese appetizer was one wedge with no accompaniment and the pickle one only had 2 slices of pickles... the lobster spaghetti came out looking like a tiny portion of kids mac and cheese but the bowl was a funny shape and so it was actually a good sized portion and quite tasty... the wine list was quite expensive... I'm not sure we'd go back."

  • "We had visited Hopgood 3 times previously but had not been there for at least one year. We enjoyed every course and the service was excellent. The sharing plate concept works very well and allows you to taste a variety of dishes. The food is unique without being so over the top that you are not interested. Only flaw was lukewarm coffee but this was immediately replaced. We will definitely return/"

  • "Many elements of Hopgood's were amazing, Crostini, Cauliflower and clams and then green bean salad with pigs ear. Some other items albeit tasty were recycled from other restaurants; this disappoints. The foie gras with the peanut butter and jelly was an obvious theft from Canoe and numerous other trendy places, 5 years ago. The Halifax donar is tasty however fiercely dependent on the sauce as the rest of the creation is based on the processed donar meat from costco. Hopgood is on the cusp of becoming "great" I hope this review steers them to where they need to go."

  • "High expectations were not disappointed. Had the snow crab & lobster spaghetti, with molasses bread & hush puppies to start. Everything was incredibly good. To be honest, we should've picked the donairs over the puppies (they were a little heavy given our other choices), but the crab was, in all honestly, the freshest & most delicious I have ever had. The drinks were pricey ($17 a pop) but very well concocted. The only downfall? We arrived for a later reservation (8:30) and every single one of the specials was not available by the time we ordered. The vibe was fun and engaging and we re definitely hitting up this little gem again."

  • "This is my second time there, and I still enjoy the food very much. I had a late dinner there with 2 others with a 8:45 reservations. It was unfortunate by that time all the specials were sold out and even the veggie dip as well! They opened the front window and it was a cool summery night, and the fresh air was great as we had dinner a few tables away from the front window. The servers were great. The chocolate bar presentation was rather a surprise, wish it was at least on a plate."

  • "I have eaten here twice in the last month and I was impressed on both occasions. Everything served from the bar or kitchen is spectacular. I'm not sure it's even possible to make a bad decision with the menu. The cocktails list is not overly exotic but the execution is perfect. The food options can be a bit cryptic (it's not entirely clear how the ingredients are going to be prepared) but I think that adds to the allure of this place and as I mentioned before it's difficult to make a wrong decision. One thing I will say is that the portions are quite small so you should expect to order a few of the entrees for dinner which makes this spot a tad expensive. Perfect spot for a special occasion."

  • "This was my third visit within a year, and on each occasion I was truly impressed by the food and by the excellent service. This is one of the rare places where they pay meticulous attention to the execution of every meal: there is both lightness and precision to the meals. Always fun, surprising, elegantly understated. We had chicken hearts embellished with elderflowers (very tender and juicy), scallop crudo with cherries and black olives tasting after nuts, the best dish being home made blood sausage with wild mushrooms (literally dissolving in mouth), and a couple more other gems, including a funky cocktail. The most pleasant part of the visit is the service: attentive but not intrusive, and highly knowledgeable."

The servers can describe the menu in detail which will help you make your choices. Dessert was awesome (toffee). It was very loud in there, and cold. I would recommend for sure, great menu!"

  • "The food was wonderful, had a variety of dishes.They recommend 4-5 dishes but they are all different sizes so 4 large ones would be too much and 5 small ones would be too little. When we go back we will definitely ask about sizes so we don't end up over stuffed again. Also the drinks, while excellent, are very expensive. Will go back for sure."

  • "The food is incredible. Sadly, the lack of great service overshadows the food and maybe a reason not to come back. I called in and they asked me to go online to make the reservation vs. helping me book something. They never smiled and greeted us as we walked in.... it took many minutes of standing beside us, on their computer, before acknowledging us. Then they couldn't seat us at the empty tables b/c they were too busy to set them up... we were asked to come back in 10 mins. Our empty water flasks were never refilled (empty since half way through dinner) and yes, we did order alcohol. And they noticeably forgot to give us our bill... and instead hung out behind the bar. When they SERVED us it was good. But too many moments of none."

  • "This is a great find in Roncesvalles - the food is spectacular and the wine list is interesting and short - I mean that in a good way enough choice but it's not a book. My partner says this is the only place in Toronto that makes an "authentic" Halifax donair. I don't really understand that but if you do, then you're in the know! Fresh and succulent oysters, great snow crab. I miss the chicken with maple and bacon sauce, dish, but it's spring and the snow crab is lovely."

  • "Good food and tasty. small plates added up, a bit overpriced for the amount of food. Great service throughout night. Staff was accommodating to group of 6 ppl arriving separately over a 1-hour period. Small plates with a group made it easy to share and try all different. Has about 8 plates plus 3 dessert, 9 alc drinks and 2 teas and bill was close to $345 + tip. Drinks a bit $. I was still a bit hungry afterwards but others were full."

  • "We were out to HopGood's for a birthday celebration. Food was delicious and service was good. We hadn't expected the tasting plates style, but definitely liked the way that the items were brought one at a time for us to sample. The server's suggestion to leave the donairs until last because of the strong flavour was appreciated. Some of the plates were a little expensive. They need a good salad or veggie dish. The 'peppers' dish was the only dish we did not love. The only downside - drinks took too long to be delivered, we got them after we were well into our food."

  • "Although the food was very good with some traditional takes on Maritime dishes, the service was very poor. We had to ask for our drink order after 30 minutes. We had to ask for our bill twice. We had to ask for the complementary bread. Two servers asked to take our drink order. At least one other table received their meal before we did even though they got there about 10 minutes after us. It was incredibly noisy."

  • "Each dish lwas amazing with its own unusual twist and gloriously presented. Seared barely cooked sea scallops & asparagus, with intensely flavoured morels in beurre blanc, preserved lemon reduction - swoon worthy. Crispy pigs ears (think crisp hickory bacon) on smoky, sweet, potato salad - intriguingly delicious. Spicy Ahi tuna hand rolled in Nori - smooth. Spotted shrimp with chili peppers - sweet. Grand finale - seared foie gras on brioche with macadamia nut and contrasting reduction. In the same class as the great chefs: Michael Städtlander, Jamie Kennedy, Susur Lee, David Chang - plus add in hip & quirkily experimental. Vibrant yet intimate atmosphere with down-home, unpretentious service. Just magical!"

  • "chef can cook seafood well - the spot prawns & their sauce were superb - the menu is strange. Evidently salads are too much trouble, ditto most vegetables. The two desserts were laughable & provenance on the oysters would be nice. An 8pm reservation should mean at least a cocktail in less than the 70 minutes it took for ours to arrive! The noise level was appalling, everyone yelling to hear each other. I realise they are aiming at a younger demographic than ours but our 40's son & his partner were equally unimpressed. It is obvious that they need to hire more kitchen & wait staff."

  • "My third visit to this restaurant and continuing good service, creative menu and great atmosphere. As a foodie, I appreciate all of the above greatly. However, one cautionary note - the music is extremely loud and almost impossible to carry on a conversation if you are seated in the bar section of the restaurant. Being of a certain age, I still value actually hearing what my dinner companions are saying. There is another room at the back and perhaps that would be a better choice. Check ahead with the staff if you are making a reservation and would prefer to dial it down on atmosphere. Otherwise, a great experience. If you like scallops, you will be in Scallop Heaven. "

  • "We love Hopgood's! We relocated from Montreal to Toronto in November, and this was our 4th visit, and they just keep getting better! Some great new items on the menu that were 1st rate - my scallops with asparagus were outstanding. Interesting wine list, and servers that are amazing - they know the menu, make great recommendations, and make you want to return. "

  • "The food is terrific. We started with oysters and snow crab, then had the creole shrimp and ceasar Brussel sprouts and potato salad. The oysters were outstanding, as was the crab. The shrimp was flavourful and delicious. The only disappointment was the potato salad. It was undistinguished and the portion was far too large. The service, however, was sketchy. It took a half hour to get a glass of bubbly and manhattan. "

Only minor complain was pricing - it seems a tad expensive, and with wine prices starting at $50, the overall bill was on the high side. Nonetheless, would recommend Hopgood's without question."

We were virtually ignored all night and constantly had to flag down any passing employee for what we needed and even had to ask for things multiple times (a chiller for the wine). It didn't seem they were short staffed, just didn't have the right staff which left a bad taste in our mouths despite the great food."

  • "This was our first but not our last time. Has just become one of my favorite restaurants in Toronto. Our waitress was excellent and was great in explaining everything to us. We had the scallops, shrimp dish, lobster pasta, and lastly, the Halifax donair. Everyone had raved about the donair but it was actually an odd combination after all the other seafood dishes in the evening. The seafood was elegant and refine. The donair while very good, was just another streetfood fare so the dinner ended on a plain note. Too stuffed for desert though so we'll have to save that for another time."
