Diner Reviews
  • "This small sea oriented restaurant was definitely worth the trek across town. We had a late night reservation after a long delayed flight and they were very accommodating and understanding. The menu is great and the specials were genius! The service was amazing, with the waiter hailing us a cab without a problem or a question! 100% recommend."

  • "I've really appreciate the quality and the presentation of the plates. The waiter took the time to explain and suggest different items on the menu on my own. It was my first visit and will repeat the experience !"

  • "Beautiful space with hardwood floors, cosy without being crowded, nice daylight coming in the back room from the patio. Service was thoughtful, relaxed and helpful. Great wine find with Prince Edward County Rose, and cocktails re-invented from times past. Fresh scallops are sweet and briny as promised. Beef tenderloin served with big fat crispy (not doughy) onion rings and on a bed of creamed spinach that is loaded with spinach leaves and a dash of nutmeg makes me think of the 1950s, and it's delicious! But wait, there's more! Fresh tasty urchin mixed with burrata is yummy and unique. Toffee bar is comforting and tied gently in parchment paper so you can take it home if you like. I'll be back."

  • "The cocktails, food, and wine were all exceptional. Staff was great, friendly and knowledgeable. Just ended up feeling as if the price tag for the evening was about 15% higher than other similar restaurants."

  • "This is our first visit with the new menu. The peal and eat shrimp were tiny and not worth the work. The beaf heart tartar was unseasoned , very wet, and the Asian flavours did not work at all. The rhubarb dessert would not have been acceptable coming from a box from the grocery store. It was mushy , flavorless , and did not contain enough rhubarb. Top this off with a bill for over $250 for 2 people, who drive over an hour to get there, and it is a destination we won't be coming back to. Very dissapointing."

  • "Went for the first time a couple of years ago and didn't understand what the fuss was about. Went again last night and very glad we did. The food was fantastic, service was casual, friendly and very efficient. The many servers made us feel very welcome. We sampled 10 different dishes and all were outstanding. Favourites were the "remix", steamed clams, donair, brussel sprout ceasar.....everything. Be sure to leave room for the desserts. The toffee bar is ethereal. We took 6 home. If you want a less noisy experience, ask for a table in the back room. A bit of a hike to Roncesvalles but so worth it. Geoff Hopgood deserves all the praise given to him."

  • "I've been to hopgoods before, and loved it. Great food, great service, etc. so when I had friends in town from Chicago, I knew that hopgoods was the place I wanted to take them. Reservations were made, and the restaurant was very accommodating with two changes. Dinner started well, knowledgeble waitress, great specials. I was looking forward to a great night. Then a private party arrived for their really spectacular back private dining room. We were halfway thru dinner and our waitress suddenly was splitting duties between our party and the large private party. Our food service slowed down to a crawl, and dishes started coming out one at a time with noticeable time inbetween. I was disappointed, to say the least."

  • "Went for my birthday dinner with another couple and simply loved everything I tasted. The waiter recommended everything be shared, and he was right! It made for a great experience. The food was outstanding and very reasonably priced for the flavours and quiality that we got to enjoy. The drinks, on the other hand, were overpriced. Other than that, it was a fantastic experience."

  • "Great service, good food. the Brussels sprouts caesar is ab ti heavy for me and my friend. Had a very delicious lobster bisque special. Also the mackerel was refreshing after the caesar. Don't think i would order the Brussels sprouts again, but it was a good dish to try. Attentive server, professional and polite. The patrons behind us were rather noisy at times so it's difficult to talk if you go later in the evening. Good crowd."

  • "We travelled to Toronto over the week-end specifically to try some new restaurants. Out of our four researched dining experiences Hopgood's Foodliner topped the list by far. Amazing fun attentive service, including a perfect description of what was on menu. We had two appetizers, and an entree each and dessert and everything from beginning to end was incredible. I highly recommend the Puffdaddy and Notorious P I G. Go there - you will not be disappointed."

  • "Totally enjoyed our night out. Dishes were familiar, but each with their own unique flare. Tuna with tomato sauce, lobster with enfused butter...MMMMmmm. Thought was even put into order...seemed strange to finish off the meal with donairs, but as we talked about it, we couldn't imagine having anything after the donairs - the lobster would have been ruined. Nice sublties and great flavours throughout. A gen in the 'hood for sure. Not an everyday place though as was ~$100/person including a couple drinks."

  • "We enjoyed kind considerate service and were delighted by the creativity of the cooking and the presentations. Our group of 6 ranged from 20 somethings to 70 somethings and all enjoyed it. The only minor concern was the volume of the music played but staff was kind enough to reduce it so we could talk more comfortably."

  • "We were looking for somewhere to go in the city after the bike show and someone, much younger than we are, suggested this place, very busy, buts they took our reservation for the bar and we shared a terrific meal....ordering as we ate, until there was no more room in the stomach! You have to like see food, scallops, shrimp, tuna, and lots of great flavours, especially the chowder. Not inexpensive, but fair for what you get"

  • "This was innovative comfort food served with a casual and confident vibe. My husband love the new buck a shuck oyster option (I don't like oysters but loved the lobster salad that he ordered with one of them!), Puff PIG was excellent - but rich so pace yourself, and the sweetbreads were a nice surprise. Even the richest and most savoury dishes and flavours had a freshness to them, and we enjoyed that... apple "slaw" with PIG and foie gras, fresh dill sauce and radishes with fried sweetbreads, etc. Foodliner is a new favourite spot for us, and an excellent option in Roncie village."

  • "I took my partner here for his birthday and we found the servers were excellent (friendly, on top of everything, thorough explanations of the menu & what it entails). The food came out extremely fast, which was also impressed. Our drinks were excellent, our appetizers were excellent & the dessert was amazing. However, we ordered a special that night (Pork Shoulder) and we very unimpressed by it, which was unfortunate because this was our first dining experience at Hopgoods. Would we go back? I think so? But I'm not really sure, as it was quite pricey to not really enjoya main. This can be a bit of a turn off."

  • "Hopgood's serves up some extremely tasty and interesting seafood based comfort food. Staff is excellent and cocktails are tasty and solid. Best thing about this place though, without a doubt, is the interesting menu that is always changing and the unreal daily specials. Specials are wiped off the board as they sell out of them so head earlier if you don't want to miss anything. Can't miss items: smoked mackerel oat cakes, donairs, and puff daddy & the notorious P.I.G."

  • "My husband and I came for Valentine's day and we were not disappointed. We had a reso for 7:30 and were seated immediately. Service was friendly and efficient. I'm ranking the dishes as follows: 1) Roasted Lobster - one of the best I have had, so delicious and buttery - great value for $30! 2) Halifax donairs - bigger than I imagined, meat was moist, flatbreads soft 3) East coast oysters - so fresh, nice mignonette 4) Octopus - I am a sucker for octopus; this was cooked very well, although plating seemed rushed 5) Cape Breton Snow Crab - good but hard to heat We also had several cocktails: good but *very* expensive at an average of $16 a pop. Loved the 'Nouveau Mot'. Overall great food. We will be returning!"

  • "Took a friend for her birthday who is originally from New Brunswick so the 'pairing' was perfect! She also received a complimentary sparkling wine which was a nice touch. The staff was also very attentive and our waiter was very enthusiastic and a great 'salesman'. The private room at the back is a great idea for a small party—i'm keeping that in mind! The food was great! Fresh oysters, the Octo was excellent and the lobster bisque was the best I've ever had. One thing—the menu is definitely not for those on a low sodium diet. Fine for one night, though!"

  • "Great Menu. Service was good, a little slow. Puff Daddy & Notorious PIG dish is a MUST. Banana Nut dessert was absolutely amazing. Drinks are pricey 15-20$ per cocktail. Dinner for 2 was about $150-$200. Must try some of the specials, they have a handful daily. Overall, delicious food, definitely worth trying out. We will definitely be back"

  • "The food was amazing. On par with momofuku. However our 7:30 reservation was not ready when we arrived, we were seated after 15 minutes and then they took another 20 to come see us, our first food which was a raw dish we didn't get until 8:20. The server was friendly enough but just not ver attentive throughout the night."

  • "Went for the first time last night to this high end comfort food restaurant as a party of 4.- - Cool vibe, great food ($$$), good time. Arrived at 6:30 pm surprised to see items already crossed off of the blackboard given our early dining time. The restaurant has a cool vibe, however, it was a bit hard to read the menus as a bit dark. Service was fair, took us awhile to get our bill when our time was up. The door line was long and with bulky coats and people could be managed a bit tighter as to not distract current diners. The one item we looked forward to was the Digby scallops from NS on the menu only to find that they took that off the menu a few weeks replaced by Alaskan scallops - dish was smaller than featured on website but good."

  • "Hi there, I can see why there's hype about this place. We just had a couple of unfortunate mistakes. First, while the server pointed out that the mackeral/oatcakes was prepared in lard, he forgot to point out that there was bacon on the casear salad (which was delish). We were being patient but unfortunately waited a few minutes to get a fresh plate for my non meat eating friend. The food was either good or great. I thought the bread pudding was the item that was most disappointing dish. Just too plain. Thought the room was just a touch too dark too"

  • "Casual, unpretentious service and a warm atmosphere make this spot particularly cosy during winter. The same characterizes the menu of homey east coast fare taken to a new level. Simple apps like the smoked mackerel on oatcakes and molasses bread shouldn't be missed. Same goes for the donairs and whatever summer or winter salad is on offer. The Cape Breton snow crab is exquisite in its freshness and simplicity."

  • "Great food and efficient friendly service. It's easy to understand its popularity. The food is very unique and well executed. BUT...they have a terrible Friday and Saturday night policy - reservations are booked for 1.5 hours! Are you kidding me?! The best restaurants in the city book for two hours. As it turned out, we did not have to leave until 2.25 hours. But, I have to be honest, this policy will make think twice about going back. In my experience, when restaurants become so full of themselves, it signals the beginning of the end. That would be a shame though because the food and service are very good."

  • "This is a great neighbourhood restaurant. It's a bit pricey for what amounts to upscale comfort food, so perhaps not crucial for a drive across town (like for us). Smoked mackerel on oatcakes were delicious - smokey and tangy. Molasses bread was moist and definitely tasted of molasses - but $3 for essentially two slices? Cold leeks with side stripe shrimp was fresh and light. Brussels sprout Caesar salad was a pleasant variation on the usual. And the donairs were worth the hype. BBQ pork chop with fried egg was competent, but unremarkable. The desserts were also great: fresh donut holes with coffee ice cream; banana bread with Nutella, salted caramel, and brown butter sabayon."

  • "We had a group of 4 which allowed us to try a number of dishes. They were all exceptional or very good. We especially loved the molasses bread and seafood chowder. One thing to be aware of is that a couple of the main dishes (like the scallops, which were delicious) have a smaller serving size so you should order a side dish. I think our server was Ben and he did an amazing job. We can’t wait to go back."

  • "Four old school chums reunited at Hopgood's enjoyed interesting cocktails, sampling and sharing the small dishes which were all beautifully prepared and presented and very tasty. The Brussels sprout Caesar salad was delicious as were the shrimps and the rare tuna. The service was excellent: friendly and attentive and well-timed. I have food allergies and our waiter really made me feel as though my needs would be taken card of - which they were! The atmosphere seems quite modern and lively, if somewhat noisy. It appears that music is played quite loudly in the background so diners need to raise their voices in order to hear each other. That is really my only criticism. I definitely plan on returning to this terrific spot."

  • "Though all the food was very good, the service was a bit spastic. Too many people were servicing our table, and the one server didn't know what the last one had just told us."

  • "Lobster, crab, oyster and clam tower $90 , well worth it. $13 pork sausage on creamed cabbage, our six yr old ate it all and askedasked for more. Octapus ( like ocean steak) , molasses bread $3( amazing) , $14 donairs were the best I've had. The only dish we were not excited about was the steak tartare$20. I would defintely go back"
