A word from Honu Seafood and Pizza - Lahaina
Chef Mark and Judy Ellman have opened a seafood shack, right next door to Mala Ocean Tavern. Honu Seafood and Pizza also sits right on the rocks of the Pacific Ocean, with 50 beers, an organic and eclectic wine list, and an extensive scotch and rum selection. Mark and Judy have created an environment that soothes the savage beasts craving of oysters on the half shell, steamed clams and mussels, Crab Louis salad, a selection of Hawaiian seafood, as well as fish from the West and East Coasts of the US. Honu also features a 900 degree brick-oven turning out artisinal pizzas. Come to Honu, drink a local Micro-brewed beer ,eat some freshly shucked oysters on the half shell, and let your eyes and soul relax into the Pacific. Honu, like Mala, is run by Mark and Judy Ellman and their two daughters Ariana and Michelle. Remember, we always try and practice Aloha. Please come and practice with us.

Diner Reviews
  • "The outside on front st.is unobtrusive..once inside it changes dramatically. This place oozes character. The view by the water's edge was inspired..the food sublime.. Waitress Jeri was affable humorous made great suggestions and even pointed out the moon bow that blessed our meal. We would return in a heartbeat."

  • "The entire experience at Honu was great - from the vibe to the food! The menu has a healthy and conscious attitude, which is great way to look at how and what we eat. Notables are the Ahi Tuna Bruschetta, and the Spanish octopus apps, both served with an edamame paste and pesto with flaxseed chia bread that is to die for! "

  • "Food was outstanding but at urban restaurant prices. Worth every penny. Large portions. Noisy, lots of kids."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us from our hotel bellman as we drove off in search of dinner. We looked it up and the reviews were great. So we went on open table and secured for an 8:30 reservation. We arrived about 40 minutes early. The group outside were raving about the food and location. We went in and were quickly seated at a wonderful table over looking the water. The appetizer of Octopus absolutely plentiful, meaty and extremely tasty. The wine great. The meal entrees absolutely Devine- fresh catch and ahi with grits- again plentiful and delicious. Our server was knowledgeable and quite helpful. A great dining experience on our last night in Maui. Yummy yummy for our tummies. Thank you!"

  • "Great spot for a family dinner with a view. We all loved our meal. Great service and a variety if good options. Ahi bruschetta was great. My only suggestion is to add the bread pudding from Malas to the menu."

  • "Good spot for a bite to eat. Best part for me was the macaroons for desert. Food overall wasn't amazing but pleasant. We had the Kobe burger, mussels ( good ) and shared a tomato salad. Like anything in Hawaii it was a $100 bill but the view was worth it. Ask for a table by the railing to see the sunset. That's the real gem"

  • "We ejoyed our dnner on a cool night in Lahaina. The service was professional and friendly without being overbearing. Jackie did a great job!"

  • "Honu Seafood is always a good spot for a Maui meal with many excellent local foods done in an interesting way. My husband had the Onu fish and chips. They are $32 which seems like a lot but he insists they are some of the best he has ever had and well worth it. I had the fresh fish with the grits - the fish was excellent and the grits were out of this world. If you want to spend less, the pizzas are excellent also."

  • "We have eaten at Honu several times in the past. We chose an early dining time to be able to 'watch the floorshow' — the whates sporting on the horizon and the whale-watching boats following them. We had a delightful meal. I chose two starters and my husband chose from a great selection of entrees. No doubt we'll return for lunch and/or dinner. Fun place to share with a group."

  • "The food, the drinks, the wine, the people, the location - all keep me coming back to Honu (and her sister Mala) year after year. So nice to be on the water but far from the tourist crowds of downtown. Friendliest service in Lahaina and the location can't be beat. Not to be missed by anyone who cares about food AND location."

  • "We went back again with friends this spring break and again, we were not disappointed. The hostesses are gracious and we were pleasantly surprised to see they remembered our girls. The ahi bruschetta was great as a starter and each of our entrees were awesome, the mac n' cheese-- share that dish as it is so rich and the huge chunks of crab don't disappoint! The fish was cooked perfectly, not overdone or dry like at Kimo's and the service was not overly attentive but just right. More importantly - GREAT kids menu and they really treat young guests with the right level of care and interaction, making them feel like they are as important as the adults. Can't wait till next year (or hopefully sooner!)"

  • "Great food! Loved the Ono fish and chips and also you must try the bruschetta. Service was great and had a yummy pear martini as well."

  • "Best ever. Period. Seriously, our 'table up front' was 20' from the surf. Giant sea turtles were feeding along the shore which is a beautiful sight in-and-of-itself, but when you factor in arguable the most spectacular sunset ever, well....Honu is a MUST! Scarily, the food is as good as the view, whether you opt for pizza or the fresh catch of the day (we had both). And be sure to sit in Susie's section. She's awesome. Fast, knowledgeable and funny. Her stories of racing outrigger canoes are sweet! Cocktails? From locally brewed beers to one of the best Chi Chi's around, you can't go wrong! Go! Before everyone else reads this and gets your 'table up front'."

  • "Honu was amazing, can't decide which is better, Mala or Honu, it's a tie, the ahi tuna bruschetta the best ever with local bread, wine list extensive and perfect setting for a restaurant, loved it and highly recommend Honu"

  • "Honu (and their sister restaurant Mala) are outstanding restaurants with incredible food. I never leave a vacation on Maui without visiting both at least once. Both serve an Ahi Bruschetta that is both beautiful and delicious! They have many small plates so you can try a variety of dishes and share."

  • "Would recommend the seafood, but not the pizza or dishes with fries - everything was cold and had been sitting a while. Server was hard to find."

  • "One of favorite places in Maui. Connie did a great job serving us. The view is amazing. Too many bratty kids by the waterfront though"

  • "We went to Honu because we love the amazing food, ocean view and ambience. Mark and Judy were both there making sure everyone was happy. We had a lovely, buttery buratta cheese plate appetizer to share...then ran the gamut from octopus to kale salad with pomegranate seeds to a satisfying Kobe hamburger. It was all delicious, fresh and artistically presented...without being overly fussy. Honu never disappoints and is consistently worth the money. But last night as we ate, the skies opened up pouring torrents of rain like it has been on Maui lately. Wow, it was a whole new experience for us. So now, in addition to all the reasons we loved it before, we will tell folks Honu is a perfect place for a rainy evening, too!"

  • "Definitely our family's favorite meal while vacationing on Maui. We were seated outside at table with an incredible view - right on the water. My husband ordered the Crab Mac & Cheese and loved it. I ordered the Flat Iron Kobe steak from the gluten free meal - the beef was so unbelievably tender! My kids meals were also fantastic. The ahi tuna bruschetta (made on gluten free flatbread) was the highlight of our meal. We were also very impressed with the service at this restaurant - everyone was so unbelievably friendly and helpful! I think I'll plan my next vacation to Maui just so that I can eat at this restaurant again!"

  • "After years--30 years-- with the like's of Roy's, David Paul's, Avalon, and Longhi's, under my belt, so to speak, Honu is now my favorite restaurant on Maui."

  • "Great sunset, nice server, everything was great until we got our entrees. The shrimp pizza smelled like an armpit (tasted worse), the sea food pasta had too much lemon-like taste as well as totally overcooked everything. Seriously doubt if the chef ever actually went to any culinary school. Everything is extremely overpriced even considering the tourist spot, and the view."

  • "We have been here many times during our visits to Maui. Unfortunately just this once we had to send their lobster pizza special back because it was too soggy. Otherwise, the bruschetta, rib lets, mahi magi, mai tais were great as usual. They also have a good selection of beers. Friendly service. Good place for romantic as well as droups to dine."

  • "Thanks for having great gluten-free pizza! Your separate gluten-free menu made choosing something my daughter could eat easy, and I had a gluten-free pizza too so we could share. It was delicious. We also enjoyed the left-overs the next day. And, my husband's meal was wonderful too, as well as the service! Thanks!"

  • "Honu always seems to deliver great food, especially the fish, which is done to perfection. This is one of our favorite places to dine on Maui, a cut above the rest."

  • "Food at this restaurant was very good, the Ahi Bruschetta is a must try, with the fish and chips one of the best I have had."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "Very very overpriced for what you get. Service was uneventful out server actually did not even crack a smile. 20 dollars for a no frills pizza? 30 dollars for Mac and cheese? Really? The only thing that is saving this restaurant is the fact of its ambiance"
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "Love the ambience. The food was good. The service was abrupt. Very pushy about what we should order for an appetizer. We were not told about the specials. We heard what they were when another server told another table. We felt as though they were rushing us out of the restaurant because it was a window table."

  • "Imaginative menu, beautiful view, great service. I absolutely love this place and look forward to dining there again on my next trip to Maui."

  • "Possibly my favorite spot on Maui for dinner. Creative menu, super waitstaff, waterfront ambience. Never disappoints. Sister restaurant Mala is also a treat. And depending on what you order, very reasonable. Famous for their ahi bruschetta which can seem pricey - until you try it - worth every cent. Love their kale salad, mushroom pizza. My vegetarian friend had a tomato-based soup that was delicious, but also arrived with a design that was literally a work of art, the kitchen is talented in many ways. He had the tofu niciose and gave it big thumbs up. Everyone I have ever sent here has enjoyed it. Also notable: the Kobe burger. We often try to fit this one in twice in the week if we can. It's that good."

  • "This has become one of our new favorite restaurants. Not only are you right on the beach with the waves almost within arms reach, the food and service are really super. They have a gluten free menu that is the best we have found on the island, so far. The Ahi bruschetta is over the top...not GF though. After our first visit we went back for a second visit and were just as pleased with everything. The seafood chowder is wonderful. My GF wife loved their spicy sausage pizza to which she added mushrooms for a small upcharge and I have to say it was very good. All in all, we highly recommend this restaurant and suggest you make reservationsbetween 5 and 5:30 so as to enjoy the sunset."

  • "What a treat! From the street, you can't see what's behind the door. When you walk in, what a surprise! Fantastic ocean view and excellent menu. Because Honu has same Owner as Mala, the menu choices are wonderful, along with good wine list and drinks. I will definitely add this to my "favorites" in Maui."

  • "The food was fine. Nothing spectacular. When you go here, you are indeed paying for the location - right on the water. My $33 salad with some crab meat was way over priced. There are much nicer places in Maui with better views, ambiance, and food. At those meal prices, I'll go to one of those places before I go back to Hono."

  • "I have rewritten this 3 times but was too long for this format so I'll be short. The worst service ever ! Food moderate at best. Way over priced. Email me if you want the whole story. My recommendation to others, stay away !"

  • "Try the Ahi Bruschetta, amazing. My wife had the dinner special, a delicious white fish. I had the Ahi Sausage pizza...a great break from my other meals based on fish and sushi. I highly recommend. and a fantastic beer selection."
