The food was typically good and the service was excellent. We had Michael as a server, and he was attentive and present without being too present. The barramundi was incredible as a special and the filet mignon was also perfectly prepared. Even before our meal, we knew it would be good when real butter was piped onto the plate (no foil wrapped product - yech) and the steak knives were French cutlery. They had a fantastic time. They stated the steaks were superb and the wine was deelish! They also had shrimp cocktails which were very filling and 2 side dishes with there meal. They were very appreciative and enjoyed there 31st wedding anniversary. Thanks to the staff for accomadating and squiring away the bill with us by using our credit card over the phone. The ambiance is quite improved and, while it took away some of the smaller personal nature of the dining experience, it certainly gave them the ability to accommodate many more people, including large private parties. The food is equally as good as always but we do miss the intimacy of the table in front of the fireplace in the libary where the manager usually came and welcomed us.
The new restaurant space is beautiful, however, just not as intimate and we can never seem to get a table near their fireplaces.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMImpressedMany years ago we found a little gem of a restaurant called Rendevous Cafe that was perfect for date night. It closed after the owner passed away and we have been looking for a "favorite" date night spot since. We finally found it - Hondo's is it. Food, atmosphere and service were awesome - and they start to send you email deals once you get signed up. We enjoyed drinks on the outdoor patio, and had dinner at a table in the bar area. The bar area was not too noisy, which was surprising. We all had delicious steaks - filet, bone-in filet and bone-in ribeye - all were perfectly cooked and delicious. Loved the lamb lollipops and calamari, as well. Great wine list and cocktails. But that was not the case with Hondos. They did not disappoint! EVERYTHING was perfect. The steak was so tender, juicy and flavorful with the drizzled on "drawn" butter, the sides (broccoli, baked potato and baked sweet potato) all "just right". The personal attention by everyone was refreshing and the dessert, a chocolate tart was one of the best desserts I have ever tasted. I feel the value to price ratio at Honos was better than other comparable restaurants. Oh, I forgot to mention the French baguette with honey butter to start it all off. From the extensive wine list, to the excellent verbal explanation of the menu, the table service being flawless, the crisp, professional dress of the servers and waiters, and I could go on.
Now,the important part,the food-
We had the scallops for app-fantastic, as I was really surprised with the white pepper and demi-glace. My Cowboy ribeye was perfectly prepared, and aged to juicy perfection. My girl's prime rib was no different-perfect expression of the meal. We also shared Key Lime pie-great! I like that they have a small menu because I tend to become indecisive when there is a huge menu. And everything that I have ordered (from apppetizers like the baked brie, to entrees - their take on shrimps and grits is to die for, to desserts were great - I was amazed by the simplicity of three scoops of Haagen Das dark chocolate).
I happen to be a foodie so I eat with my eyes first: they can up their presentation a notch. But between a dish with a so-so presentation/great flavor and a great presentation/blah flavor, I would go for the latter in a heart beat. It was also the first time I had visited Hondo's since they moved to their new location. The food and service are still outstanding. The addition of Valet Parking and a better entrance with some outside dining are very positive changes. The only negatives were that it is very noisy, which wasn't the case in the other building and I miss the John Wayne ("Hondo") pictures, which aren't visible from most places in the dining area.
I still believe this is the besy steak in the Richmond Metro area, and the best prepared. The interior is beautiful and very well planned for offering the most flexibility for differing party sizes. The staff members were very helpful and friendly and the food was delicious. This is the only steak house that we go to where the person who delivers the steaks waits for you to cut into them and provides light from a small flashlight to determine if they are cooked right. Most other establishments of this nature put the steaks down, leave, and return after few minutes--which is too late if you find that your steak is not cooked to your liking. So what other place to go, but to a close restaurant. The waiter, Alan, was very attentive to our needs (although he disappeared a bit between the meal and dessert). The cocktails were superb. The steaks were simply fabulous.
