Diner Reviews
  • "We found this cafe while on vacation. Loved that it catered to all diets--vegan, vegetarian, and meat lovers. The Spring bisque was especially good! They have jazz on Sunday evenings which was a nice bonus."

  • "Brunch was delicious in a quiet atmosphere. Server was attentive and the morning was a great celebration for my Mom's 70th birthday."

  • "Homegrown always has interesting menu items, and they're always delicious. The brunch many is no exception. Drinks were also excellent, and at a fairly good price."

  • "Home Grown is my favorite Newark lunch place. Good variety, food always fresh and well prepared, lots of options for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans."

  • "We love brunch here. I have some dietary restrictions, and can always get so many things here to eat! And they're always wonderfully made, not something just thrown together by the kitchen. My vegan daughter and vegetarian daughter love it here too! And sitting outside on a glorious Sunday is the BEST!"

  • "Excellent! We have never had a bad meal/experience. Interesting menu and knowledgeable wait staff. Accommodating to personal choices and preferences, too."

  • "This place is a "must-try" when you're in Newark. Delicious, healthy food that's reasonably priced. My favorite Main Street restaurant by far!"

  • "We love HomeGrown Cafe! It is the restaurant that everyone in our family (including both kids) always choose for all of our special occasions, and everyday dining."

  • "We were disappointed with our eating experience at Home Grown. Business was not very active on this Tuesday, yet we waited forty-five minutes for our food. Signs all over the restaurant advertise the weekly food specials, with $2 off all weekly specials. Yet when we asked the waitress about them, we were informed that there are no weekly specials this week. My wife and daughter ordered an appetizer from the menu. Ten minutes later the waitress informed us that the appetizer was not available. When the food finally came, it was very tasty. However we felt that the wraps were considerably smaller than they had been."

  • "We loved the place. It was great for us with a toddler, even on a "pub crawl" night. Service was very good and the food was right on. Love the vegetarian options and the carnivorous ones. I've never been to a place where you can get such a tasty variety of vegan, vegetarian and carnivorous options. The drinks were good too. A little strong, but that's not always bad. "

  • "I remember eating at Home Grown ten years ago and I loved it. My most recent trip was not as memorable. The decor and ambiance was great. The waiter was friendly but slow. I ate with just one friend of mine and it took awhile for our entrees to come out. I remember the previous menu having more options. The new menu seemed pretty paired down. I liked what I ate but it wasn't very memorable. Maybe I should have ordered something else, but I would recommend it to healthy and vegetarian/vegan eaters."

  • "The food and service is always great! My My favorite brunch place."

  • "This was our 3rd visit to Home Grown Cafe. We had been there for dinner & brunch in the past and both meals were very good, especially the brunch. On Saturday, we were there for brunch. I got the same meal for brunch this time that I had on my previous brunch visit. The BLT w/ fried egg and home fries. On my first brunch visit, this meal was DELICIOUS!! This time, it was awful! Not bad, awful. The home fries were burnt and hard and tasted like they had been sitting around for hours. I actually had tons of 'home fry' crumbs mixed in too. The fried egg on the BLT was completely overcooked. Three of the five people in our group had this meal...and all three of them were awful. Our other 2 diners had different entrees which were ok."

  • "we love this place. not only is the food fresh and healthy but the service is great and they really seem to care about their customers. my college-age daughter has a food allergy and they never make us feel like we are inconveniencing them about it, they always make us feel like they will take great care of her. i'm a vegetarian, so i'm always happy to eat here knowing i can get something healthy and meat-free but the rest of my family eats meat and loves all kinds of things on the menu. Highly recommend for awesome food and a nice time! we have never been disappointed."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here before, and every time was great, food and service. This time, we sat outside, and waited almost 40 minutes for a breakfast burrito and some chili hash. We were going to leave, and the food came, so we stayed. Of course, brunch was delicious. Never a problem with the food, always terrific. Kitchen was way too slow this time."

  • "I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. It's definitely a place to check out! They have new weekly specials starting every tuesday and I highly recommend getting the hummus. It is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!"

  • "I've been to homegrown many times and the food is always amazing! However, this particular time I went it too about 45 minutes for our food to come out after ordering, and the orders were simple, straight from the menu. Because it took so long the manager took care of our bill (we didn't even complain/mention that it took long, they just did it for us so they obviously pay attention to their customers). The food was amazing as always and we got to sit in a roomy booth. SO although we were there for a while, it was worth it because the meal was free and taste just fine."

  • "I come to Home Grown 3-4 times a month for lunch. Always good service, reliable menu choices plus seasonal dishes. Food always fresh, well prepared and well presented. Best place for real food in Newark."

  • "Overall the experiance was good. The service was a little slow considering we went on a Monday night and there wasn't many people there. We were seated right away but it took our waitress about 10 minutes to come see us and another 20 for our appetizer to come out. There was plenty of fondue but not enough bread. When we received our main entree our waitress asked if we would like more bread for the fondue of course we said yes. We were then informed it would be $1 more for the bread. I know its only a dollar but I don't think that there should be a charge for extra bread on the appetizer considering there wasn't enough bread in the first place. Overall good food, decent service. We will be going back again."

  • "I am a newly diagnosed celiac, requiring gluten-free foods. Not only was there a special menu for gluten free, the server was knowledgeable, and also said he chef was willing and able to prepare some of the specialties (brussell sprouts) to be celiac friendly. I knew Home Grown catered to both carnivorous and herbivorous diets, and happily, now also gluten free. Fantastic!"

  • "On my most recent visit to Home Grown I had fantastic service. Even better than the service was the taste of the falafel sandwich. It was mouth-watering. The brussel sprouts were cooked to perfection. And who could know how pomegranate sauce can make it all come alive?"

  • "I've been to Home Grown a few times now and I'm always pleasantly surprised by not just the wide variety of foods offered (love the Punjabi hash global bowl) but by the mere fact that there is a vegan/vegetarian option (usually in the form of a proffered protein of choice) for pretty much every dish on the menu. This time around I particularly enjoyed the crispy brussels sprouts for an appetizer (amazing!). The staff was friendly and efficient, the prices aren't terrible (especially not for what you get), and the restaurant itself is a pleasant unassuming space in a busy college town. I'd recommend Home Grown to anyone, omnivores and herbivores alike!"

  • "Had a recent nice lunch with a vegetarian friend and, importantly, there were plenty of choices. Very good service. Our food was good; dishes were very large and we took doggy-bags home. Nice desserts."

  • "The grilled cheese I ordered was exceptional. My table ordered a portion of hummus. Not only was it delicious, but the portion was large enough for all of us to share. The waitress was extremely acomodating."

  • "I am on a detox program right now and was glad to find the various vegan and gluten free options at Home Grown fit my diet. My wife was very excited that we'd still be able to go to a fantastic restaurant on Valentine's Day and still eat well prepared and interesting food."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Home Grown used to be part of a small rotation of restaurants that we went to because of how well they handled my daughter's food allergies. The restaurant has always been a bit pricey but it feels like they've raised their prices on the simple items (hamburgers, wraps), resulting in a bill of over $100 (with tip) for four with no alcohol, no dessert and two "pot of fries" as appetizers. We tried the new (for us) Macaroni and Cheese and found it woefully under-seasoned and (at best) lukewarm. Given how long it took to get the meal, we decided not to send it back."

  • "We came there with a baby, 1 vegetarian, 1 vegan. Your menu is wonderful, and they served our baby carrots gratis, which was so kind. The food was amazing, as always. Flavorful and healthy. The service, though, was lacking. It took a very long time for our order to be taken, and a long time for it to come out. Then, we never saw her again. We got our own ketchup and sriacha, which caused some eye rolling by some of the other servers, but we had no choice. This happened another time at brunch, also. We do love it there, because we have such varied dietary needs!"

  • "With so many great menu items to choose we have to keep coming back until we have tasted them all! The service was excellent."

  • "We were very happy with our dinner at Home Grown. Our one year old son had an amazing Lo Mein that he just devoured. And the apple fritter appetizer was oh so good. No complaints what so ever. We will be back."

  • "My hubby is a chef and this is one of his favorite places to dine out. The food is excellent, the service is friendly and the menu changes enough to keep you from getting bored. We haven't found a meal on any of the menus that we wouldn't recommend. They give you enough options that you can mix it up if you are able to get there frequently. My personal favorite is the powerhouse sandwich, it can be made vegetarian and is substantial enough to be filling. I often take half home for later."

  • "Three of us ordered seared Ahi tuna over lo mein. The tuna was overcooked and the sauce on the lo mein was overpowering. The salads were pretty good. Our server was pleasant and efficient. I wish I had more variety of foods to report on, because the menu certainly had a lot of variety. But we didn't love it."
