Home Grown Cafe has good food and good beer with reasonable prices. We go there fairly often, especially when we have a group with a vegetarian since they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. The menu has seasonal changes but some standard fare is always available. This is the Main Street restaurant I recommend most to friends who visit and people who ask me where to go in Newark for good eats.

Always a good meal at a reasonable price. Even on a busy Saturday night the service is quick, efficient and friendly. I like the option of adding whatever protein you want so it makes things more flexible to salads and sandwiches. LOVE the charbroiled brussel sprouts.

We miss the old menu at Home Grown and think that the food, and the presentation has declined since the restaurant changed its menu format. As long-time veggies, with many carnivorous friends, HomeGrown is always our first pick for dining out in Newark, but some of our plates seemed to lack care in presentation and seasoning. The Pad Thai was a glob of noodles with virtually nothing showing with color or texture. It was left virtually untouched. There were no garnishes on any of the plates. The waitress was very good - knowledgeable and efficient.

This restaurant is great for large groups of varied eaters. We love to come here with vegetarians and meat eaters. The food was very good. The falafel is always a winner. Never fails. The desserts were disappointing though. We had the pistachio puffs and they were extremely dry and bland, very little filling at all. Also we came on a Sunday night which is apparently music night, and while we did enjoy the band, it was EXTREMELY hard to carry on a conversation while they were playing.

We were disappointed with our eating experience at Home Grown. Business was not very active on this Tuesday, yet we waited forty-five minutes for our food. Signs all over the restaurant advertise the weekly food specials, with $2 off all weekly specials. Yet when we asked the waitress about them, we were informed that there are no weekly specials this week. My wife and daughter ordered an appetizer from the menu. Ten minutes later the waitress informed us that the appetizer was not available. When the food finally came, it was very tasty. However we felt that the wraps were considerably smaller than they had been.

We loved the place. It was great for us with a toddler, even on a "pub crawl" night. Service was very good and the food was right on. Love the vegetarian options and the carnivorous ones. I've never been to a place where you can get such a tasty variety of vegan, vegetarian and carnivorous options. The drinks were good too. A little strong, but that's not always bad.

I remember eating at Home Grown ten years ago and I loved it. My most recent trip was not as memorable. The decor and ambiance was great. The waiter was friendly but slow. I ate with just one friend of mine and it took awhile for our entrees to come out. I remember the previous menu having more options. The new menu seemed pretty paired down. I liked what I ate but it wasn't very memorable. Maybe I should have ordered something else, but I would recommend it to healthy and vegetarian/vegan eaters.

This was our 3rd visit to Home Grown Cafe. We had been there for dinner & brunch in the past and both meals were very good, especially the brunch. On Saturday, we were there for brunch. I got the same meal for brunch this time that I had on my previous brunch visit. The BLT w/ fried egg and home fries. On my first brunch visit, this meal was DELICIOUS!! This time, it was awful! Not bad, awful. The home fries were burnt and hard and tasted like they had been sitting around for hours. I actually had tons of 'home fry' crumbs mixed in too. The fried egg on the BLT was completely overcooked. Three of the five people in our group had this meal...and all three of them were awful. Our other 2 diners had different entrees which were ok.

we love this place. not only is the food fresh and healthy but the service is great and they really seem to care about their customers. my college-age daughter has a food allergy and they never make us feel like we are inconveniencing them about it, they always make us feel like they will take great care of her. i'm a vegetarian, so i'm always happy to eat here knowing i can get something healthy and meat-free but the rest of my family eats meat and loves all kinds of things on the menu. Highly recommend for awesome food and a nice time! we have never been disappointed.

I've been to homegrown many times and the food is always amazing! However, this particular time I went it too about 45 minutes for our food to come out after ordering, and the orders were simple, straight from the menu. Because it took so long the manager took care of our bill (we didn't even complain/mention that it took long, they just did it for us so they obviously pay attention to their customers). The food was amazing as always and we got to sit in a roomy booth. SO although we were there for a while, it was worth it because the meal was free and taste just fine.

I am a newly diagnosed celiac, requiring gluten-free foods. Not only was there a special menu for gluten free, the server was knowledgeable, and also said he chef was willing and able to prepare some of the specialties (brussell sprouts) to be celiac friendly. I knew Home Grown catered to both carnivorous and herbivorous diets, and happily, now also gluten free. Fantastic!

Overall the experiance was good. The service was a little slow considering we went on a Monday night and there wasn't many people there. We were seated right away but it took our waitress about 10 minutes to come see us and another 20 for our appetizer to come out. There was plenty of fondue but not enough bread. When we received our main entree our waitress asked if we would like more bread for the fondue of course we said yes. We were then informed it would be $1 more for the bread. I know its only a dollar but I don't think that there should be a charge for extra bread on the appetizer considering there wasn't enough bread in the first place. Overall good food, decent service. We will be going back again.

I've been to Home Grown a few times now and I'm always pleasantly surprised by not just the wide variety of foods offered (love the Punjabi hash global bowl) but by the mere fact that there is a vegan/vegetarian option (usually in the form of a proffered protein of choice) for pretty much every dish on the menu. This time around I particularly enjoyed the crispy brussels sprouts for an appetizer (amazing!). The staff was friendly and efficient, the prices aren't terrible (especially not for what you get), and the restaurant itself is a pleasant unassuming space in a busy college town. I'd recommend Home Grown to anyone, omnivores and herbivores alike!
