A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation.   • "I live in LA and there are lots of great steak houses. Mastro's, Ruth's Chris, Flemings, the list goes on... I think the Hitching Post is the best steak house from LA thru the Central Coast. And I believe in supporting the local business instead of the big corporations. When ever we are in Buellton we eat at Hitching Post II. I love Gray Hartley and his wines. He is the nicest man and loves to talk with everyone and take pictures with all the customers. This place is top notch for fun, great wine and amazing food."

  • "The night was special as it was my husband's birthday. The food was good though not as good as remember from my trip to the Hitching Post II. The portions are smaller (I still brought home food though), I guess the value is waning. The steak was cooked to perfection. The bread was really weak, seemed almost stale and the staff was not overly quick to fill water glasses or bring my to go container (had to ask twice). Overall the Hitching Post II is a nice place to go with good food."

  • "Hitching Post, thank you so very much for making my birthday dinner a memorable one. I was surprised by the ice cream treat to finish the meal I ate. This was due to my husband who made note in the comments of the reservation that this was a birthday dinner, thats it. No mention of it when we arrived, when we sat.This is a sign of a quality restaurant that pays attention to the smallest detail as they clearly paid attention to the note. Not only from our gratious server Chris (thanks Chris!) but the welcome staff at the door who said goodbye to me with a happy birthday greeting...made my evening! As for the dinner..delicious! Had the bone in rib eye with my husband and it was fabulous! Already planning our next trip will be returning!"

Remember to get a spot by the open bbq area so you can watch the chef work his magic. Oh, and the wine list is good as well."

  • "I am a huge fan of this place and have been coming a few times a year since it opened (except when it was overwhelmed with tourists after Sideways came out). But on Wednesday, April 2, our experience was bad. Hostess grouchy. Reservation not honored, 25 minute wait, then squeezed into the back room off the bar with two large noisy parties. Slow, bossy, unprofessional service from waitress who schmoozed with the large parties and pretty much ignored us. I will chalk this up to an off night and go back, but it was a very bad experience overall. And I should note that the bartenders were great!"

  • "We were a party of five. Had 8:00 reservations and the place was packed on a Friday nite. The hostess told us they were running on schedule and sure enough we were seated a 8. Wait staff was great. Never felt rushed but never had to think about the drink order, food order, even the check. Everything was like clockwork. The fact that Sideways was filmed there and the bartender in the movie Is the bartender was pretty cool too. GO !"

  • "The Hitching Post II is known for its oak-fired BBQ, and the meat, fish, and artichokes that come off that grill are flavorful, smoky, and tender. The Magic Dust (a blend of salt and pepper, with other spices thrown in) they use on everything is the perfect seasoning. And finally, you can't beat the Hitching Post red wines. All in all, a wonderful dinner."

  • "I can see why they where featured on the travel channel. This place is fantastic. The roasted garlic appatizer is delicicious as was the artichoke. The salad and soup where to die for and the main course, the filet mignon was the best filet i have ever had. Perfectly cooked to a medium rare you could literally cut it with your fork. The restraunt has a wonderful atmosphere and the staff are polite and couteriouse. I don't think i once had to ask to have my beverage filled yet my cup was always filled! Me and my wife both rate it 5 stars!"

Although we had a later evening reservation, we decided to eat earlier and ended up eating at the bar. We had a great time watching and talking with the bartenders. The bar scene was quite active. The food was excellent. Even though we ate at the bar, the service and food were top notch. If you are in the Santa Ynez area, this is a MUST."

  • "I had made reservations for 7:00 and we arrived 5 minutes early. We were told our table "wasn't yet ready." So I said, ok we'll wait. Well we waited, and waited, 20 minutes later, I went up to the host and ask what's the delay. She said the table is almost ready. Meanwhile another couple had walked up, said their reservation was for 8:00 and were seated at a immediately. So now I'm getting angry and the hostess told me they were still waiting for our table to free up. Ended up with about a 30 min wait.. And 30 minutes longer to order... They were under staffed. Had to wait 5 minutes after the food was delivered to ask someone for sour cream and chives for our baked potato's. The food was great... I would go back and give a second chance."

This place was highly recommended by a Big Sur State park Lodge reservation receptionist, but was a big disappointment. This place also has high prices for below average food. Even the receptionist was unfriendly, setting the mood as dismal from the beginning."

  • "From the outside you would pass the hitching post without even thinking twice. I can tell you that would be a big mistake. My two friends and I ordered the 10 ounce Top Sirloin, it came with all the fixings and wow. By the time you finished the soup and salad trying to finish the steak was a challenge. I was the only one who could muster the gastric strength to accomplish this feat. The other two certainly only took theirs home because they were just too full. They both relished the thought that they could extend their gastric pleasure another day."

  • "If you are looking for a delicious steak and are in the area, this is a must visit. Santa Maria style grilling that's open to see for the diners, some of the hunks of meat are ridiculous! Always perfectly cooked and you can find a few items that are Prime beef. The grilled artichoke is fantastic and the wines made by the owner are quite good. A fun place that's been around a while for a reason. I'm dying to go back to try the burger which I think is only served on the bar side."
