A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Now featuring Hitching Post Burgers in the HP Sidebar Mondays - Wednesdays! Oak-grilled 1/2 pound ground sirloin on homemade cheese bun with our famous french fries for just $12.

This restaurant simply has the best steak I have ever had anywhere. I have eaten at hundreds of steak houses and nobody is close to the consistency of excellence that HP2 achieves. Big statement ?, try for yourself.

Had dinner with my parents and husband here this week. Not sure if there is different management, but the experience was not the wonderful time we've had in the past at the Hitchingpost. The service was terrible- the waitress came to our table at least 5 times apologizing for not bringing drinks, appetizers, salad, the main course, or to check in on us. The place was crowded and loud. The food was mediocre at best. My husband's lamb chops were plain and boring. My petit filet was full of grizzle and fat. My Mom's steak was so tough, she had to saw through it to cut the prime rib. Just very disappointing.

This is a great off-beat dining experience. The decor will take you back a few decades and into the Midwest and Western steakhouses of the past. Fun and quirky to experience, the steaks are terrific. The wine selection is great, and our waitress was as professional and attentive as you'll find in any fine restaurant. Not to miss if you are in the area.

My wife and I went to HP II on a recommendation from people that we met at the Flying Flags RV Resort. We took their advice and we are so glad we did! HP II's claim to fame is a movie that was made inside the restaurant 12 years ago, but the food and wine should get all the attention. We both had filet mignon and they were cooked perfectly. Hitching Post has their own wine, which was very tasty. Instead of bread, the server brings an assorted vegetable plate to munch on. We highly recommend the artichoke appetizer! If you are in the area, make sure you eat here, and ALWAYS secure a reservation time. We walked in for our 7:15pm Saturday night reservation, and they were quoting 1.5 to 2 hour wait for anyone who did not have a reservation.

I have been to this Hitching Post for almost two decades and it's been consistently delicious. The meat might not be prime nor dry aged, but it's cooked so perfectly over that oak grill, it takes on a character that transcends the traditional steak house. Combined with the charming service and timeless decor, it makes for a uniquely Central Coast experience. If you're looking for the singular greatest piece of marbled Kobe beef, go back to Beverly Hills. That said, they treat their beef in a singular way that is phenomenally delicious. Combine it with skewers of grilled shrimp that are cooked with the perfect snap and you have a perfect meal. Also, take advantage of the fabulous Hitching Post wines. Delicious exclusive pinot noirs.

The Hitching Post is one of favorite dining dstinations. We live in the L.A. area, and look for reasons to come to the area, just so we can have dinner at the Hitching Post. With Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley wineries in the area, it's not hard to do. Great food, great service.

GET THE FRIES! The reason why they taste so good is that the fries are double fried in Beef Fat. So delicious and krispy! Because the food was sprinkled with the magic dust, the seasoning on the food was amazing! Bought some magic dust for home use as well!

Over priced, over hyped. Food was worse than mediocre. I wouldn't recommend the place at any price, and certainly not at the prices they charge. The only positive is that it has a nice wine list, well priced, so at least we got to drink good grape juice.

Have not eaten at the Hitching Post for a few years. We opted to eat in the bar area, as we were early for our dinner reservations. We were not disappointed . The steaks that we had were perfect ! My wife was totally impressed with the wine choices and suggestions. Since I was the designated driver, we shared the roasted artichoke. Looking forward to another great meal, next time we visit the area.

The burger was good (we went on burger night, which is Monday-Wednesday). The wine list is great. Seven or eight different Pinot Noirs by the glass. This is the place to come in the area of Pinot. We tried four Pinots ranging from good to very good. Wines are pricey (about $15 a glass for the better Pinots) but worth it. I'd happily come back here any time.

been to the Hitching Post for my birthday for the last 3 years... its been everything I expected. I never minded paying the prices cause the food was always excellent. This time, I'd have to say it dropped down a notch. Artichoke - flavor and texture was perfect but $ 11.00 for a smaller artichoke. I eat a steak once a year and always feel like I should get the best possible cut so that meant Ribeye but they didn't have the rib eye. ..so I got the "chef's choice" new York medium rare. Cut the steak in half... in the middle it was medium rare but by the time I got to eating the edges, it was a little more cooked and chewy and too late to send back. Salad great, baked potato great, Pinots very good but too bad about the meat.

There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe our evening here. From the moment we walked in, they couldn't do enough for us. The rib chop was too much for the two of us and was the best beef we had ever eaten. The veggie tray they serve is such a nice touch. I wish we lived closer so we could go again

Because of positive reviews, I looked forward to dining here for the first time. I was greatly disappointed. My meal began inauspiciously with a nondescript pork posole soup. It was followed by a cloyingly sweet salad -- I had ordered both blue cheese and Italian vinaigrette dressings for the salad, which the waitress declared was "continental," but the single dressing she brought tasted neither like blue cheese nor like vinaigrette! The worst part was my 10 oz. sirloin steak. I had ordered it rare, but it was overcooked to medium. Even worse, it was dry and virtually tasteless -- probably a low grade of meat. I was greatly disappointed, so I went to Harris Ranch later 2 days later for a PERFECT sirloin steak and wedgie salad! Ah!

I was a single diner and requested an out-of-the-way table. Apparently, it made me kinda invisible to my server as the service for the entire dinner was just okay — surprising for a place with such a reputation. Fortunately the food made up for it. Great salad, tasty rice pilaf and a steak that was perfectly cooked and hot from the wood-fired grill. I ordered two glasses of HP wine (the "pink" and the cabernet sauvignon, both excellent) but got the second half way through my steak instead of with my steak as requested. Really, my waitress may have just been having a bad day. All in all, a mixed experience — go for the food; good service may be a hit or miss affair.

The Hitching Post was recommended to us by someone who lives in Solvang. We were disappointed that they were out of their artichoke appetizer, which was one of the reasons why we went. But we were very happy with the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. We will definitely go again the next time we visit the area.

The Hitching Post is one of those iconic places. Simple but amazing steak and someway limited sea food menu. We are not huge beef eaters, though enjoy an amazing steak a few time a year, so we appreciate being able to get a smaller portion size. Most of the offered steaks are available in three sizes. Relish plate, soup, salad, and bread are all included with your entree........no foo foo a-al-cate nickel and diming. We will definitely be back!

You really need to think about a permit from the city to serve wine in a fenced off patio area. My rib-eye special was only fair, we all agreed the service was just fair and there were no artichokes. Probably the most pleasant part of the evening was sitting outside (illegally....) sipping the Bien Nacido and watching the turkey vultures nesting in the trees. Spectacular!
