A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Now featuring Hitching Post Burgers in the HP Sidebar Mondays - Wednesdays! Oak-grilled 1/2 pound ground sirloin on homemade cheese bun with our famous french fries for just $12.

We enjoy dinner at the Hitching Post every year (for the last 8 years). We never had a bad meal here and the wait staff is just super nice. Try their Prime Flat Iron steak and the Rib Eye (one of their specials) - you will so not regret it. The meat has that smoky taste to it - perfect. Their wine list is superb and any drink from the bar will want you to have another one. Will be back next year.

Was in the area on a weekend trip; had Saturday night reservations. Prices are high, but the quality is outstanding ~ best steak I have ever had! Ample portions and everything is fresh; loved the relish tray which is something you rarely see in restaurants any more. Could view the cooking area from my table which was an added treat. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Overall, a great experience.

We are fans of the movie Sideways. Remembering that this was a famous spot from the movie, Miles' favorite spot and where he meets Maya. We figured we had to give it a go. - Service was wonderful. Our waitress probably touched our table about every 7-8 minutes. She saw when we needed items and brought them without us having to ask for them. - The steaks were delicious. Loved the smokey oak flavoring from the BBQ. A different, yet welcomed, flavor than what you get from a steak house like Mortons, Flemings, or Donovan's. - We tried the Hitching Post's Cabernet Sauvignon. Ehh,that left a little to be desired. It was not great, just OK. Thankfully.....the food and service was way better. We'd definitely go there again.

We only get to come occasionally from Monterey as we pass through for a night and we always eat there. My filet mignon was cut with a fork and my wifes flat iron was the same way. Sat near the chef's window and enjoyed watching him cook and we took several pictures , even got invited back with the chef for a picture. Our waitress was the best ever, she had a great sense of humor. Smiling always, suggestions for wine was spot on - she made our evening sooooo enjoyable. Enjoyed the table of (12) next to us because of the waitress. Thank you for another amazing evening. Oh and lets not forget the bar area and bar staff they were also the best and knowledgeable of all wines.

First time, Ambiance lacking. There were 4 of us and no one enjoyed the "special" goat cheese salad. 2 of the 4 steaks were acceptable. The food was very overpriced. My filet was dry but I am not one to complain so when the (very cheerful) waitress took away the plates she did not seem to notice that 90% f my steak was untouched. My check for 2 was $120.00 inc. tip and 1 glass of house wine, for that price I can get a great filet at Ruths Chris and for another $30.00 could have had a great steak at Maestros.

We thought this place had typical BBQ sauce type food but not at all. The salmon and filet we had there had a surprising "oak wood" flavor. Best salmon I've had. It's not a fancy place so go comfortable, the deli tray was different too, instead of just bread and butter or crackers. It's a definite stop going through Buelton or Solvang, Ca.

We were there on a Monday night which happened to be burger night. It was pretty crowded but fortunately we had reservations. Seeing how expensive the steaks were (Ruth's Chris territory) we went with the steakhouse burgers which were pretty good. Somehow the owners think they can get away with not investing one cent into décor as the carpets and window treatments are shabby and clearly 30 years old. The server was very nice and the wine list featured many good local wines albeit for $15 a glass and up. Overall we enjoyed ourselves but the menu and wine list are a total mismatch with the décor and atmosphere. Fancy Steakhouse or Divey Road House?

We have eaten at The Hitching Post in Buellton 8-10 times during our trips in the region. We always look forward to our white tablecloth dining experience there and it is always the highlight meal of our trip with it's old school relish tray and full meal offerings. We always order steaks: I have the New York and my wife has rib eye, each and every time our steaks are grilled to flavorful perfection with wonderful seasoning and are done just right on that wood stoked grill. A relative was with us and had rack of lamb and raved about how it was prepared and it's great flavor. We guide all our friends to The Hitching Post, if they don't try it out they only have themselves to blame.

Overall a solid good. The seating was a bit disappointing. We ended up right by the kitchen even though we'd made the reservation a week in advance and this dinner was for a birthday celebration. The restaurant is over subscribed by tourists, like us, who are still aware of it from the film Sideways. That notwithstanding, the food was well prepared and plentiful. The duck breast had very nice smoke flavor, but the accompanying sauce tasted like a sugary dip - it killed the flavor of the duck. Our steaks were cooked to order and of good but unremarkable quality. The wine list is very well rounded and prices are quite reasonable for bottles, but not glasses. The highlight was the service, which was attentive and not obtrusive.

Had dinner with my parents and husband here this week. Not sure if there is different management, but the experience was not the wonderful time we've had in the past at the Hitchingpost. The service was terrible- the waitress came to our table at least 5 times apologizing for not bringing drinks, appetizers, salad, the main course, or to check in on us. The place was crowded and loud. The food was mediocre at best. My husband's lamb chops were plain and boring. My petit filet was full of grizzle and fat. My Mom's steak was so tough, she had to saw through it to cut the prime rib. Just very disappointing.

This is a great off-beat dining experience. The decor will take you back a few decades and into the Midwest and Western steakhouses of the past. Fun and quirky to experience, the steaks are terrific. The wine selection is great, and our waitress was as professional and attentive as you'll find in any fine restaurant. My wife and I went to HP II on a recommendation from people that we met at the Flying Flags RV Resort. We took their advice and we are so glad we did! HP II's claim to fame is a movie that was made inside the restaurant 12 years ago, but the food and wine should get all the attention. We both had filet mignon and they were cooked perfectly. Hitching Post has their own wine, which was very tasty. Instead of bread, the server brings an assorted vegetable plate to munch on. We highly recommend the artichoke appetizer! If you are in the area, make sure you eat here, and ALWAYS secure a reservation time. We walked in for our 7:15pm Saturday night reservation, and they were quoting 1.5 to 2 hour wait for anyone who did not have a reservation.

I have been to this Hitching Post for almost two decades and it's been consistently delicious. The meat might not be prime nor dry aged, but it's cooked so perfectly over that oak grill, it takes on a character that transcends the traditional steak house. Combined with the charming service and timeless decor, it makes for a uniquely Central Coast experience. If you're looking for the singular greatest piece of marbled Kobe beef, go back to Beverly Hills. That said, they treat their beef in a singular way that is phenomenally delicious. Combine it with skewers of grilled shrimp that are cooked with the perfect snap and you have a perfect meal. Also, take advantage of the fabulous Hitching Post wines. Delicious exclusive pinot noirs.
