A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Now featuring Hitching Post Burgers in the HP Sidebar Mondays - Wednesdays! Oak-grilled 1/2 pound ground sirloin on homemade cheese bun with our famous french fries for just $12.

The very best customer service, the best Ribeye I've ever had, the very best wine, and the best desserts. This was my third time and it never disappoints. I love being able to watch the chef's expertise at grilling all the wonderful steaks and seafood. The grilled artichoke is a must have. All around the best dining experience.

I absolutely love this place! Always a good time and the wine is spectacular. From what I've been told I thoroughly enjoyed my food :) Every time we go to Buellton/Solvang/Los Olivos area, we always stop at the Hitching Post for our dinner. The qual is delicious and the steaks are cooked to perfection with mouth watering goodness.

Waitress was rude and didn't listen to the order. Brought fries with filet mignon. The meat portion was thin and small. The wine was just OK too. Had to wait at the table for the check for over 30 min AFTER the meal. This is a tourist trap and they are so understaffed and rude that I will highly recommend you go some place else.

  • Great Experience at a Sideways Location!

My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday and see the restaurant made famous in the movie Sideways. We were not disappointed. The ambiance was old school and small town, evoking memories of our childhoods in other similar restaurants, but it didn't feel old and worn. The service was great. We ordered a bottle of pinot noir and were very happy with it. We started with the quail legs appetizer called hot legs, which was rich and spicy. We shared the rib chop, which was plenty for the two us - we even had leftovers to take home. The rib chop was perfectly prepared to our specifications. We ended with dessert: chocolate cake for me and key lime pie for my husband. The chocolate cake was good, but not scrumptious. Afterwards we went home and watched the movie Sideways for the first time since it came out ten years ago, which made us excited about returning for another delicious meal.

How many places still serve relish trays before the first course? Then they served the best piece of seared Ahi that I can remember having. Perfectly cooked and deliciously seasoned. Friendly staff. Knowing and experieinced waitress backed up by attentive bussers. All in all a very pleasant dining experience.

For my wife's birthday, I took her up to Solvang for a romantic weekend, including a meal at the Hitching Post. Reservation was for 7:15, we arrived @ 6:50, hoping for an early seating. NOT A CHANCE. We weren't seated til almost 7:30. Once seated, the dining room was very noisy; we couldn't have a conversation without shouting. Our sever was excellent. The food was good, not great. Overall, not worth the value for what I paid. One gets the impression that one is dining at the Hitching Post at their permission, not that they should be serving you.

The steaks were absolutely fantastic cooked perfectly, baked potato, salad and the soup. Our waitress Jackie was wonderful she had everything timed perfectly so we didn't wait between courses and we were not rushed. I would recommend this place in a heart beat.

We enjoy dinner at the Hitching Post every year (for the last 8 years). We never had a bad meal here and the wait staff is just super nice. Try their Prime Flat Iron steak and the Rib Eye (one of their specials) - you will so not regret it. The meat has that smoky taste to it - perfect. Their wine list is superb and any drink from the bar will want you to have another one. Will be back next year.

Was in the area on a weekend trip; had Saturday night reservations. Prices are high, but the quality is outstanding ~ best steak I have ever had! Ample portions and everything is fresh; loved the relish tray which is something you rarely see in restaurants any more. Could view the cooking area from my table which was an added treat. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Overall, a great experience.

We are fans of the movie Sideways. Remembering that this was a famous spot from the movie, Miles' favorite spot and where he meets Maya. We figured we had to give it a go. - Service was wonderful. Our waitress probably touched our table about every 7-8 minutes. She saw when we needed items and brought them without us having to ask for them. - The steaks were delicious. Loved the smokey oak flavoring from the BBQ. A different, yet welcomed, flavor than what you get from a steak house like Mortons, Flemings, or Donovan's. - We tried the Hitching Post's Cabernet Sauvignon. Ehh,that left a little to be desired. It was not great, just OK. Thankfully.....the food and service was way better. We'd definitely go there again.

We only get to come occasionally from Monterey as we pass through for a night and we always eat there. My filet mignon was cut with a fork and my wifes flat iron was the same way. Sat near the chef's window and enjoyed watching him cook and we took several pictures , even got invited back with the chef for a picture. Our waitress was the best ever, she had a great sense of humor. Smiling always, suggestions for wine was spot on - she made our evening sooooo enjoyable. Enjoyed the table of (12) next to us because of the waitress. Thank you for another amazing evening. Oh and lets not forget the bar area and bar staff they were also the best and knowledgeable of all wines.

This is my second time in the Buellton/Solvang area and after eating at the Hitching Post II the first time through, felt it was a "must stop" the second time around. I was not disappointed. I went with a group of friends so our meals ranged from fish to steak and everyone loved the preparation and taste. We also ordered wine with our meals and bought a few bottles to take home. The HP Rose is perfect for both white and red palates and the Pinot Noir is their specialty. I'll likely be back in the area in 2015 and will make this a priority stop once again.

First time, Ambiance lacking. There were 4 of us and no one enjoyed the "special" goat cheese salad. 2 of the 4 steaks were acceptable. The food was very overpriced. My filet was dry but I am not one to complain so when the (very cheerful) waitress took away the plates she did not seem to notice that 90% f my steak was untouched. My check for 2 was $120.00 inc. tip and 1 glass of house wine, for that price I can get a great filet at Ruths Chris and for another $30.00 could have had a great steak at Maestros.

We thought this place had typical BBQ sauce type food but not at all. The salmon and filet we had there had a surprising "oak wood" flavor. Best salmon I've had. It's not a fancy place so go comfortable, the deli tray was different too, instead of just bread and butter or crackers. It's a definite stop going through Buelton or Solvang, Ca.

We were there on a Monday night which happened to be burger night. It was pretty crowded but fortunately we had reservations. Seeing how expensive the steaks were (Ruth's Chris territory) we went with the steakhouse burgers which were pretty good. Somehow the owners think they can get away with not investing one cent into décor as the carpets and window treatments are shabby and clearly 30 years old. The server was very nice and the wine list featured many good local wines albeit for $15 a glass and up. Overall we enjoyed ourselves but the menu and wine list are a total mismatch with the décor and atmosphere. Fancy Steakhouse or Divey Road House?
