A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Now featuring Hitching Post Burgers in the HP Sidebar Mondays - Wednesdays! Oak-grilled 1/2 pound ground sirloin on homemade cheese bun with our famous french fries for just $12.

Diner Reviews
  • "Walked in and was seated Food was excellent Great place"

  • "I was a single diner and requested an out-of-the-way table. Apparently, it made me kinda invisible to my server as the service for the entire dinner was just okay — surprising for a place with such a reputation. Fortunately the food made up for it. Great salad, tasty rice pilaf and a steak that was perfectly cooked and hot from the wood-fired grill. I ordered two glasses of HP wine (the "pink" and the cabernet sauvignon, both excellent) but got the second half way through my steak instead of with my steak as requested. Really, my waitress may have just been having a bad day. All in all, a mixed experience — go for the food; good service may be a hit or miss affair."

  • "The Hitching Post is one of those iconic places. Simple but amazing steak and someway limited sea food menu. We are not huge beef eaters, though enjoy an amazing steak a few time a year, so we appreciate being able to get a smaller portion size. Most of the offered steaks are available in three sizes. Relish plate, soup, salad, and bread are all included with your entree........no foo foo a-al-cate nickel and diming. We will definitely be back!"

  • "You really need to think about a permit from the city to serve wine in a fenced off patio area. My rib-eye special was only fair, we all agreed the service was just fair and there were no artichokes. Probably the most pleasant part of the evening was sitting outside (illegally....) sipping the Bien Nacido and watching the turkey vultures nesting in the trees. Spectacular!"

  • "Always fantastic steaks, great wine, great service, I freaking love this place."

  • "You really need reservations any time of the week. The food is amazing though. A but pricey, but worth it. It's a fun scene inside, especially by the bar which was featured in Sideways."

  • "Everything was great, service, food and staff. Definitely return here next time in the area b"

  • "a little chaotic when we got there. Was confused on who was our waiter, but found out manager was trying to help out. Waiters seemed to have too many tables to handle? Food was great, and service got better when Chris came on the scene. Would definitely go back."

  • "This place was awesome, service was excellent. Food was great, we ordered : BBQ Sauteed Mushrooms, Smoked Prime Rib Pork, very tender and juicy , also the grilled Texas Quail a must."

  • "The food was delicious and the service was great. Since it's such a popular place, there were lots of people and lots of noise."

  • "I have always heard about the famous steaks at the Hitching Post in Buellton, CA; the 5 oz filet did not meet my expectations, the meal with all the good trimmings and a glass of wine for $50 would have been worth it if the steak was good."

  • "It's been 20 years since I ate at this restaurant and It's as good as ever. Our party of 6 had different meals and everyone loved what they got. Being we like wine, the selection was excellent. It was a great evening."

  • "We had a wonderful anniversary dinner. We both had the Duck Breast and it was outstanding. The server was excellent. They are usually super busy and because of that we arrived at 5 PM and were the first ones seated. When we left there were people waiting and the parking lot was full on a Wednesday night. Friday & Saturday nights are like a zoo, without reservations. The Hitching Post II specializes in steaks but the duck we had was the best duck I have ever tasted, not dry and not over cooked - just perfect. We did not order wine but they bottle their own wines. An outstanding restaurant worth traveling for. When we go to Solvang we always go to the Hitching Post II in Buellton CA."

  • "We have been dining at the Hitching Post for over 20 years. Every time we pass through Buellton we have to stop in. The steaks are excellent and so is the Hitching Post Pinot Noir. Be sure to order your steaks according to the menu instructions. I usually order medium, but I order medium-well here. Dinner includes soup and salad. Everything is home made. No cans or bottles. The garlic toast served with a full dinner is wonderful. We are usually too full to order dessert. Worth a visit."

  • "Get the steak! Good char and crust. Very well cooked. Decent cuts of meat. The accompaniments are ok: very good french fries, good soup/salad, save your dollar and skip the shrimp cocktail (trust me)."

  • "The Hitching Post never fails to impress. Driving from Los Angeles to Buellton to have the food at HP is well worth it. The service is always top notch and we look forward to going back again soon."

  • "My wife and I were visiting the area and made a reservation based on our watching the movie Sideways. We both had steak (filet and flat iron) and they were excellent, tender, perfectly cooked. However, it took over an hour to get to that part. Mussells were orderd first and it took 40 minutes to get to us. The waitress was covering way too many tables and two large groups. She checked in on us only once when it became obvious something wasn't right. We could have been real jerks about the situation and been totally in the right but we decided not to. Manager comp'ed the mussells without us asking and by the way...the mussels were very good too and I highly recommend. Service was the only shortcoming here."

  • "My husband and I come to the hitching post every year to celebrate a birthday. This year did not disappoint!!! we were greeted and taken to our table right away. We were greeted by Robin our very friendly server. She knew that we were celebrating my birthday and she greeted us with a very big smile. She let us take our time and got our beverages and let me open up my envelopes for my birthday. She assured us we could take as much time as we wanted. I ordered the special, the ribeye steak 12 ounces and my husband ordered the Porkchop. The steaks were grilled to perfection. We had the soup of the day which was cream of mushroom. Robin brought out a birthday plate with a candle with ice cream berries and with cream. Robin truly made our night."

  • "Great beef. Loved the apple cobbler. Nice, attentive gal serving us. Fun place... very "local" feeling. Reminded us of the movie "Sideways". Our second visit and will return again for sure!"

  • "Friday night and the ribs were absolutely excellent. Salads and desert were the top of our vacation outing!"

  • "My husband and I had a fantastic time at the Hitching Post II We started off our night by trying their wine tasting specials that run from 5 to 6 in the bar area. The Hitching Post II have their very own wines. We sampled four of their wines, and loved them all. We also saw the owner walking by, my husband said hello. He was super friendly. Next, we ate in the main dining room. Your dinner comes with both salad and soup, bread, crackers, vegetable tray, side and main entree. My filet mignon was cooked to perfection, so was my husband's ribeye. We enjoyed the meal, wine and service so much. We can't wait to come back. You will not be disappointed."

  • "We (2 grownups, 1 kid aged 3) visited HPII on our California round trip. We had heard that they offer the "best steaks", so we ordered some, together with their 2012 Syrah. Delicious."

  • "The artichoke appetizer is amazing and should not be missed! Everyone in my group ordered the baby back ribs and they all thought they were deliciously seasoned. There is no BBQ sauce, they use a rub so they are different but really, really good. I ordered the NY steak and like the ribs, the meat is cooked on an open pit. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had as it was prepared/served exactly as ordered. The service was also excellent so all in all, a great experience and we will definitely go back when we are in the area."

  • "I have been disappointed way too many times by reviews touting the greatness of a restaurant. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! In my fifty-two years of life I have had many steaks. Many good, a few bad or average. The Santa Maria style rib eye at Hitching Post II was easily the best steak I have EVER had anywhere. Perfectly cut, seasoned and cooked. Every bite was as delicious as the last. After the first bite I could only sit in silence as I chewed and looked at my date with a smile on my face. She had the same smile as she ate her rib eye. No words were needed. We both agreed...This was "The best" hands down. The fries? Some reviews said, "Worlds Best!" I have had fried potatoes all over the world. Theirs are THE BEST! MMMmmmm!"

  • "This place rocks. We had the bone in rib-eye (plenty for 2 people). Plus a nice bottle of one of the HP's own pinots. Topped off with an amazing piece of chocolate cake (3 people shared). The service was great. We made on-line reservations, which I strongly recommend. We went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. If You are in the Solvang or Buellton areas, you owe yourself a visit here."

  • "My husband and I were torn on what cut of meat to choose, so our wonderful server, took us through the kitchen to a chart in the back where she explained where the cuts come from, and we passed by the wood grill to look at the meat being cooked. Talk about amazing service. One of the best meals we have ever had!!"

  • "The ribeye was fantastic! Service was good. Odd curtains for bathroom stalls, seems like something that should be addressed with the size of the crowd on a Monday night."

I have been there several times in the past and Chris has always been outstanding. I was there with my 11 yr. old daughter and Chris really treated her special. Thank you Chris and The Hitching Post....."

  • "If you're old enough, you remember this kind of restaurant. If have a good memory, you'll even remember details of places just like this. The relish tray, the cracker basket, the warm friendly service. Make no mistake though- the Hitching Post II is better, way better than those restaurants, on every level. Don't expect stacked up, stylized food. This restaurant is for foodies- & wine aficionados - who want tasty food, traditionally prepared, perfectly. The magic combination of carefully trimmed beef, expert preparation & a real oak fire is deceptively simple & hard to equal. Add a wine list of difficult to find treasures, reasonably priced,& it gets even better. Finish it with home made traditional desserts on the right of sweet- a winner"
