A word from Hitching Post II
Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Try them here or purchase on our website for your enjoyment at home.

Now featuring Hitching Post Burgers in the HP Sidebar Mondays - Wednesdays! Oak-grilled 1/2 pound ground sirloin on homemade cheese bun with our famous french fries for just $12.

Diner Reviews
  • "Have not eaten at the Hitching Post for a few years. We opted to eat in the bar area, as we were early for our dinner reservations. We were not disappointed . The steaks that we had were perfect ! My wife was totally impressed with the wine choices and suggestions. Since I was the designated driver, we shared the roasted artichoke. Looking forward to another great meal, next time we visit the area."

  • "The price may be a little high compared to other restaurants, but the quality cannot be beat. The ingredients were very fresh. The steaks were prepared perfectly. Our food was outstanding! Great cooks! Great ambiance! Great place!"

  • "The burger was good (we went on burger night, which is Monday-Wednesday). The wine list is great. Seven or eight different Pinot Noirs by the glass. This is the place to come in the area of Pinot. We tried four Pinots ranging from good to very good. Wines are pricey (about $15 a glass for the better Pinots) but worth it. I'd happily come back here any time."

  • "Wonderful food and atmosphere! The service was amazing and the appetizers were great...mostly included in entree meals"

  • "been to the Hitching Post for my birthday for the last 3 years... its been everything I expected. I never minded paying the prices cause the food was always excellent. This time, I'd have to say it dropped down a notch. Artichoke - flavor and texture was perfect but $ 11.00 for a smaller artichoke. I eat a steak once a year and always feel like I should get the best possible cut so that meant Ribeye but they didn't have the rib eye. ..so I got the "chef's choice" new York medium rare. Cut the steak in half... in the middle it was medium rare but by the time I got to eating the edges, it was a little more cooked and chewy and too late to send back. Salad great, baked potato great, Pinots very good but too bad about the meat."

  • "There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe our evening here. From the moment we walked in, they couldn't do enough for us. The rib chop was too much for the two of us and was the best beef we had ever eaten. The veggie tray they serve is such a nice touch. I wish we lived closer so we could go again"

  • "We came here for our anniversary and were very disappointed. We were sat right away, but It took 35 minutes to take our order. They were busy but had plenty of staff. Our server was nice but rarely checked on us. The food was good, but the service and ambiance ruined it."

  • "Although we live 4 hours away when we're in the area we go to Hitching Post for dinner. We have never been disappointed in service or food."

  • "Because of positive reviews, I looked forward to dining here for the first time. I was greatly disappointed. My meal began inauspiciously with a nondescript pork posole soup. It was followed by a cloyingly sweet salad -- I had ordered both blue cheese and Italian vinaigrette dressings for the salad, which the waitress declared was "continental," but the single dressing she brought tasted neither like blue cheese nor like vinaigrette! The worst part was my 10 oz. sirloin steak. I had ordered it rare, but it was overcooked to medium. Even worse, it was dry and virtually tasteless -- probably a low grade of meat. I was greatly disappointed, so I went to Harris Ranch later 2 days later for a PERFECT sirloin steak and wedgie salad! Ah!"

  • "I was a single diner and requested an out-of-the-way table. Apparently, it made me kinda invisible to my server as the service for the entire dinner was just okay — surprising for a place with such a reputation. Fortunately the food made up for it. Great salad, tasty rice pilaf and a steak that was perfectly cooked and hot from the wood-fired grill. I ordered two glasses of HP wine (the "pink" and the cabernet sauvignon, both excellent) but got the second half way through my steak instead of with my steak as requested. Really, my waitress may have just been having a bad day. All in all, a mixed experience — go for the food; good service may be a hit or miss affair."

  • "The Hitching Post was recommended to us by someone who lives in Solvang. We were disappointed that they were out of their artichoke appetizer, which was one of the reasons why we went. But we were very happy with the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. We will definitely go again the next time we visit the area."

  • "The Hitching Post is one of those iconic places. Simple but amazing steak and someway limited sea food menu. We are not huge beef eaters, though enjoy an amazing steak a few time a year, so we appreciate being able to get a smaller portion size. Most of the offered steaks are available in three sizes. Relish plate, soup, salad, and bread are all included with your entree........no foo foo a-al-cate nickel and diming. We will definitely be back!"

  • "As always great food and very good wine. The range of Pinots is exceptional."

  • "You really need to think about a permit from the city to serve wine in a fenced off patio area. My rib-eye special was only fair, we all agreed the service was just fair and there were no artichokes. Probably the most pleasant part of the evening was sitting outside (illegally....) sipping the Bien Nacido and watching the turkey vultures nesting in the trees. Spectacular!"

  • "A delicious meal with very friendly service. Lovely atmosphere!"

  • "Grilling always makes anything taste better. My wife had the ribeye special which was unbelievably delicious as every bite melted in our mouths. I had the turkey steak which through some magical mysterious process they keep the breast moist and juicy."

  • "You really need reservations any time of the week. The food is amazing though. A but pricey, but worth it. It's a fun scene inside, especially by the bar which was featured in Sideways."

  • "a little chaotic when we got there. Was confused on who was our waiter, but found out manager was trying to help out. Waiters seemed to have too many tables to handle? Food was great, and service got better when Chris came on the scene. Would definitely go back."

  • "This place was awesome, service was excellent. Food was great, we ordered : BBQ Sauteed Mushrooms, Smoked Prime Rib Pork, very tender and juicy , also the grilled Texas Quail a must."

  • "I have always heard about the famous steaks at the Hitching Post in Buellton, CA; the 5 oz filet did not meet my expectations, the meal with all the good trimmings and a glass of wine for $50 would have been worth it if the steak was good."

  • "It's been 20 years since I ate at this restaurant and It's as good as ever. Our party of 6 had different meals and everyone loved what they got. Being we like wine, the selection was excellent. It was a great evening."

  • "We had a wonderful anniversary dinner. We both had the Duck Breast and it was outstanding. The server was excellent. They are usually super busy and because of that we arrived at 5 PM and were the first ones seated. When we left there were people waiting and the parking lot was full on a Wednesday night. Friday & Saturday nights are like a zoo, without reservations. The Hitching Post II specializes in steaks but the duck we had was the best duck I have ever tasted, not dry and not over cooked - just perfect. We did not order wine but they bottle their own wines. An outstanding restaurant worth traveling for. When we go to Solvang we always go to the Hitching Post II in Buellton CA."

  • "We have been dining at the Hitching Post for over 20 years. Every time we pass through Buellton we have to stop in. The steaks are excellent and so is the Hitching Post Pinot Noir. Be sure to order your steaks according to the menu instructions. I usually order medium, but I order medium-well here. Dinner includes soup and salad. Everything is home made. No cans or bottles. The garlic toast served with a full dinner is wonderful. We are usually too full to order dessert. Worth a visit."

  • "Get the steak! Good char and crust. Very well cooked. Decent cuts of meat. The accompaniments are ok: very good french fries, good soup/salad, save your dollar and skip the shrimp cocktail (trust me)."

  • "The Hitching Post never fails to impress. Driving from Los Angeles to Buellton to have the food at HP is well worth it. The service is always top notch and we look forward to going back again soon."

  • "My wife and I were visiting the area and made a reservation based on our watching the movie Sideways. We both had steak (filet and flat iron) and they were excellent, tender, perfectly cooked. However, it took over an hour to get to that part. Mussells were orderd first and it took 40 minutes to get to us. The waitress was covering way too many tables and two large groups. She checked in on us only once when it became obvious something wasn't right. We could have been real jerks about the situation and been totally in the right but we decided not to. Manager comp'ed the mussells without us asking and by the way...the mussels were very good too and I highly recommend. Service was the only shortcoming here."

  • "My husband and I come to the hitching post every year to celebrate a birthday. This year did not disappoint!!! we were greeted and taken to our table right away. We were greeted by Robin our very friendly server. She knew that we were celebrating my birthday and she greeted us with a very big smile. She let us take our time and got our beverages and let me open up my envelopes for my birthday. She assured us we could take as much time as we wanted. I ordered the special, the ribeye steak 12 ounces and my husband ordered the Porkchop. The steaks were grilled to perfection. We had the soup of the day which was cream of mushroom. Robin brought out a birthday plate with a candle with ice cream berries and with cream. Robin truly made our night."

  • "My husband and I had a fantastic time at the Hitching Post II We started off our night by trying their wine tasting specials that run from 5 to 6 in the bar area. The Hitching Post II have their very own wines. We sampled four of their wines, and loved them all. We also saw the owner walking by, my husband said hello. He was super friendly. Next, we ate in the main dining room. Your dinner comes with both salad and soup, bread, crackers, vegetable tray, side and main entree. My filet mignon was cooked to perfection, so was my husband's ribeye. We enjoyed the meal, wine and service so much. We can't wait to come back. You will not be disappointed."
