Diner Reviews
  • "I know it was Easter Sunday, but it took our waitress a VERY Long time to come over to even say HI. We waited a while and then went to the bar to order our cocktails. When she finally came (approx. 13 minutes after we sat down), we told her that we ordered from the bar. She didn't bring us our cocktails, my husband had to bring all three back to the table for us. We didn't have silverware at our table. Then they only gave us some and not everyone's. Also, my son's dish didn't have any devil eggs on it that we needed to ask for. Lastly, we ordered 3 butterscotch puddings for dessert. She came back to let us know that you were all out, it was 12:45PM. We were very happy with the food!"

  • "Chef Todd Davies has turned Hilltop 1892 into a *** dining experience in a short time. Kitchen was very accommodating with a gluten-free guest of mine. I ordered the cedar planked salmon served on a bed of butternut squash nuggets. The salmon was cooked to perfection... I only wished the skin was more crisp. The evening was beautiful... along with a window view of Novato."

  • "The food has been consistently very good on multiple visits. The staff is friendly and efficient and not over-bearing. Wine service was elegant and cocktails well made (no pun intended)"

  • "this place used to be most fab back in the 80's-90's, then went down hill and eventually closed. they reopened several years ago and have gone through different bar manager/chef to get it right. drinks this time were good, wine list good although they say en nite is 1/2 bottles and we wanted silver oak and the server came back and said that is not one we can get and no where was that listed as such. ordered another wine. took forever to get it, waned it to breath b4 dinner...late on that. good apps, bread but main entree was very lacking...."

  • "The most recent changes with taking down the partition in the dining room and no tables cloths have made the room darker and less formal, kind of sad as most restaurants in the area already fill the casual dining needs, having something that was a little special in the area was a plus in my opinion. The bar provides casual already. We had the salmon dish this last visit and it was good, and so is the sole, but I hope that the menu will not become totally "home cooking" with Mama's meatloaf, pork chops and chicken pastas as the only options. I checked "Fit for Foodies" in hopes the restaurant will not steer away from some more exciting and creative dishes like there were in the past. Fresh fish of the day is always a nice menu item."

  • "All four of the people in our party found the food to be a big disappointment. I ordered the pork chop, and was told that the kitchen was substituting pork loin for the bone-in pork chop. Not at all the same thing, and in my opinion not a reasonable substitution. I ordered the pot roast instead, and it was hard as a rock, like leftovers that have been in the refrigerator for several days. The chicken in the pasta was overcooked and the fish and chips were nothing but batter. I certainly won't go back, and wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. The kitchen brought us the wrong salads, but at least the waitress came over and apologized, which we appreciated."

  • "Our group had a wonderful brunch at Hilltop. The staff was very understanding about our seating requests and we enjoyed the wide variety of menu choices that were available. From the bison burger (yum!) to the flavorful breakfast choices - this place is a winner. We will be returning soon."

  • "This was a great dining experience with a very reasonable price. The portions were a nice size and delicious, and the bar drinks were generous. Great view of the valley."

  • "The menus and wine list have been substantially improved of late. Combined with the views and overall atmosphere, this has been reborn into a great experience."

  • "We had a very nice dinner here last weekend. Food was good, especially the squash risotto. And the view of the West Marin hills was spectacular. Sat in a booth in the first level up an had a beautiful panoramic view. Would come back for that alone, but the food will bring us, too"

  • "Very good as always! Our most recent birthday meal was no exception. Excellent destination in Novato for a memorable meal to cap off an important day."

  • "A perfect place for us to meet a couple of old friends and catch up on their news. They seated us in a quier room with a great view. Service was attentive but not overly so. Food was excellent."

  • "I hadn't been there with my lady friend for a few years. We heard they changed ownership a couple years ago, and we thought we'd give it a visit. I had the Fish N Chips and started out with a calamari appetizer. The calamari was bland, and the Fish N Chips was greasy and mostly fried batter with little cod. The food was much better under the previous ownership."

  • "Everything was perfect. Dining with my two favorite men...my husband and son. Food was very good and the service was excellent. Birthday cake was delicious also (complementary). I ordered the roasted beet salad to split. Very small and I've never had white beets before...but they were tasty."

  • "My brother recommended this restaurant while he was out of town and I was staying at his house. So glad I followed his advice. Great food. Great ambiance. Great bar area and good people watching which is part of the fun of going out for me. Both my mom and I were pleased with the food and service and we are kind if hard to please when it comes to dining out. Highly recommend and I'm just so sad I don't live closer."

  • "Hilltop has been there (in various incarnations) since I was a kid ( a LONG time ago). I was fun to revisit, if for no other reason, the memories. The food was tasty, but a little chaotic (fish taco were very difficult to pick up due to over dressing). Atmosphere was pleasant and staff was friendly and attentive. Would definitely return."

  • "Great place in Novato,CA --high on a hill overlooking the town, and embracing the surrounding mountains. Special benefit...1/2 price for a bottle of wine on Wednesday nights."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "We had the steamers in broth. Only one thin slice of bread was served on the side and the broth was tasteless. Ditto for the calamari. No taste to the breading and little in the calamari. Prices were reasonable but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. Perhaps the meat dishes are better? The burger and fries we saw go by looked tempting. We wanted to like the place more..."

  • "This restaurant was wonderful, in every way. We were lucky enough to have dinner for our 8th wedding annivesary and they brought us out a lovely little box of cookies and handwritten card congratulating us - very nice touch! We also happened to be there on a Wednesday night - when most bottles of wine at 1/2 off! Ordered a lovely bottle of Frank zinfandel, and it was fabulous. The view was magnificent, the dinner delightful - we'll be back!!"

  • "I requested angelhair pasta with clams. It was not on the menu. I got exactly what I wanted: tiny, succulent clams, very fresh in a good garlic/wine sauce. Friends were happy with their steamers and mussels. Grilled prawns over Caesar got good marks too. The bread pudding was outstanding."

  • "Restaurant was informed that this was our 58th… No tablecloths and poor seating arrangements took away from the experience. Food was okay…not exceptional in any way. Corkage was too high at $15 per bottle."

  • "As always, Hilltop continues to be a wonderful restaurant for lunch or dinner. Had lunch for four on a Thursday afternoon and staff pleasant, very promptly seated, by window. Waitperson very knowledgeable about menu items and drinks, and very responsive to questions regarding drinks and menu items. Orders taken promptly but without rushing patrons. Lunch items were served promptly, hot, and delicious. Waitperson monitored table so drinks were re-ordered, water glasses refilled, plates cleared. We will continue to return for happy hour, lunch and dinner, and will continue to bring friends, as well as recommend this to friends and acquaintances."

  • "We went for my mom's 75th birthday for brunch. The service was slow even though the restaurant was almost entirely empty. They also had difficulty helping us with gluten free options, and the waiter did not seem familiar with the menu. We had to ask for water three times (we also had our two kids with us, and they were thirsty). The place was pretty and in a nice setting, but I would not seek it out nor will I go here again."

  • "It's sad to have to make a bad review, especially when it isn't the server's fault. But our service sub par for a restaurant like this. The server was alone which explains the poor service. Not her fault. But an experience none the less. And mine was a poor one."

  • "Nice place, awesome view, food was good ... but there were not enough servers so the waits were beyond excessive."

  • "We enjoyed a nice evening at Hilltop 1892 - very "old school" in both ambiance and food. Nothing will surprise diners here. Selections are all from decades ago and haven't been tweaked. Quality is ho-hum, sadly, as the restaurant itself boasts such a beautiful location. Our Chateaubriand for two was tasty yet arrived on the cooler side of lukewarm. Wine list includes some nice selections but we no longer order mixed drinks from the bar as the quality isn't what we've come to expect from mid- to high-end restaurants. We live in Novato and would love to see this restaurant become the dynamic go-to place for locals and visitors alike."

  • "We go to the Hilltop often for the ambiance, the bar setup, and the food. You can sit by a fireplace and sip a drink, sit at the bar and have a salad for dinner, or grab a table by the window in the dining area and watch the sunset from a hilltop. There is a small patio with heaters and the view is great although you are in view of all the patrons walking up to the front door. Hilltop is one of several of our "go to" places in Novato when we want a special experience. We just visited the Hilltop for their Valentine's Day prix fixe 4-course dinner. They did a great special dinner... pricy but worth it and after all it was a special occasion. The dishes were unique and prepared like they were artwork. I recommend this place often."

  • "New menu looks great. The wild salmon dish and brick chicken are terrific and the Baja Shrimp salad is still there, thank heavens. The servers new look is fun and the service is always attentive and personal. They make you feel welcome and we can't wait to try more new items."

  • "Brought seven friends for the view. We were placed behind the privacy screen, no view at all. Their menu isn't compared lento Boca but their prices are. If you are going for the view, be certain to request it since it's not standard."

  • "we had high hopes for the Hilltop after it was renovated. ambience is very nice esp. the bar area with its gorgeous views is worth coming. the food however is just mediocre. which is really disappointing. you would think after such a big renovation they would invest in a good chef as well and keep up with Marin's foodie community. on the bright side, we needed a reservation for 7 people for a Friday night with very little notice and they were able accommodate us. nice restaurant, nice view, friendly staff, but unfortunately the food doesn't live up everything else. prices are too high for what you get."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "The quality of the food was good but the price of two for dinner in Hicksville Novato costing $92 without drinks or dessert was just way too high for my liking. I had a small salad and my partner had calamari plus a main course of short ribs and ribeye. No wow factor or interesting flavors....just cooked right and the meats were good quality. But for what we got and how much we paid it was not worth the $$$."

  • "My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. The waitress was very personable and made sure we were well taken care of. It was a bit noisy but it was a playoff game going on in the bar area so we didnt mind. They made sure to seat us away from it as much as they could. All in all, it was very nice and we will be going back."

  • "A couple of things could be improved: One I went up to the reservation podium and waited, an no one acknowledged me. I did see the hostess with another hostess that I I did find out later was in training. Part of the training should have been to acknowledge the customer right away, even if they are busy she could have said hello I will be right with you. The other thing that was a little disappointing was that the menu online does not reflect the menu at the table. Both my friend and I had already had our heart set on dishes that ended up not being on the menu. The waiter started off with dishes not offered also seemed a bit strange. It was my friends birthday, but overall we enjoyed our dining experience."
