Diner Reviews
  • "We had a amazing time out, They did a amazing job for my wifes birthday! The food was amazing and the service was the best that I have had in a long time. Thanks again...."

  • "Always enjoy coming in when my sister is in town, with her 3 kids. We usually come in during the time they have their trio jazz band playing in the background -- good times! They're VERY accommodating when it comes to small children, which is a bonus! The large baguette tables definitely help when corralling kids. Foods always consistently good, along with the service."

  • "Artichokes are to die for! They're steamed then grilled on their wood fire and they're devine!"

  • "We go here often. Every once in a while, they offer a Rutherford steak with heirloom tomatoes and blue cheese. It's the best! Wish it was a permanent entrée on the menu."

  • "I can't recall a waiter ever asking this question, and for a good reason. It smacks of arrogance, and while the food was fine, it was nothing special. The booth seats are uncomfortable and the noise level high for a Sunday supper. All this can be forgiven, but this question was really too much!"

  • "This is a very well done and well managed restaurant. Everything seemed to be very good to great. I'd certainly come back here and try more things. The staff is nice and very well trained. Unlike most places in SF, you have space, comfy chairs and a certain familiarity with the menu. Nothings too crazy or new it's just well done and prepared right. The lack of pretentious SF snobbyness is nice and its a bit more formal of a dining experience. Reservations recommended as it seemed busy. The table got orders of artichokes, artichoke spinach dip, Cesar salad, french dip, seared tuna with side salad and the burger. All were very good I felt french dip and grilled artichoke were the true standouts."

  • "Nice dining spot. Had a drink at the bar and then dined near the live band. Food was delicious. I highly recommend the Hawaiian Rib Eye."

  • "Great place, remarkable that they are able to consistently deliver food, service and ambience in so many cities. I have been a customer since the private preview opening of the first Houstons (Hillstone) in Nashville, and seek them out whenever I travel."

  • "We took a friend here for his birthday, and without prompting they put candles in the desserts we ordered (more on that later). That attention to detail was evident throughout the meal, where the wait staff was efficient, friendly, and readily available. The food is American with an emphasis on grilled fare, and everything is nicely done, good-quality ingredients, good execution. We enjoyed the spinach-artichoke dip and they brought extra chips when we ran out. I'm always a little disappointed when the restaurant has a meager dessert menu, though. Just three items: a hot fudge sundae, a brownie a la mode, and a cheesecake. All good but designed for convenience rather than creativity. Only small ding for otherwise great experience."

  • "We are new to SF but have eaten at Houston's in Dallas for 25 years. So we were excited to try Hillstone. We arrived for an early supper and were seated right away. Our server immediately told us they were out of shrimp. Then after we placed our order, she came back and told us that they were out of the wedge salad I had ordered. She did not bring a menu or offer suggestions and just stood waiting for my response so I just chose the same salad as my husband (dinner salad). When the salads came, they were without goat cheese (listed on menu). She also came back and told me they were out of carrots but I had ordered broccoli. The food was good but attention to detail and being out of so many items will make us think before going back."

  • "The menu prices are a little higher than I would expect for some of the fare (e.g., some salads/burgers/sandwhiches) (thought the food is great and the portions are large) - but the no corkage makes this place extremely affordable. Will definitely be back."

  • "great restaurant, good service, really good food (I recommend Salmon); bit noisy but ......"

  • "Had a great experience here. Table was ready when we arrived and noise level was not too much, even though it was pretty packed. Each member of my party ordered something different and not one of us was disappointed with our selection. Which passed around bites bragging about who had the best dish. I had the french dip sandwich after reading the raves about it and they weren't exaggerating!!! It literal did melt in my mouth. We were celebrating a birthday at our table and our server brought us a special dessert complete with candle at the end of our meal. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this place. Perfect and yummy!"

  • "Love the no corkage fee- a great place for a date night. Place is a little loud but once seated, it was ok. Service was a little frantic, but overall they were good. The artichokes were wonderful, as was the char and Hawaiian rib eye!"

  • "Love this place! I try to get there a few times a year, but it has become a Birthday tradition"

  • "For a chain, the food is pricey, portions small, but high quality. No bread to start, they removed the truvia packets for ice tea (yet they say they are organic) -- which is inconsistent with their message. The burgers are $18 (pricey) -- but high quality. The seafood is limited, and it is in the high $30 range for a very small portion. The half chicken is $26 -- but very tasty. SF has many great restaurants in the "B-B+" category like Hillstones, so what brings me back at least once a month? The only reason I return is the no corkage policy on wine. They single themselves out for that policy smartly, because it separates them from all the B-B+ quality restaurants in SF -- and they still got our group for martini's at the bar."

  • "We made reservations to meet friends here as it was convenient to where we would be parked for an afternoon event we were attending. It is in a quite touristy area, but we were seated at our reserved table immediately upon arrival. Soon someone came to take drink orders, but we had brought wine (free corkage), so just ordered water and it came right away and was replenished often throughout the meal and after. Our server arrived and told us the special, but did not push for our order and we took our time to order. Three of us had the ribs, which were wonderful and one the pork chop special, which he said was great also. We were seated next to the window, so could see the piers, but also blocked some of the noise, as it is quite noisy."

  • "I saw a review on a local tv program and thought this might be a great place to bring my husband's parents and it was!!! The bar is great to hang out while waiting for your table. We had reservations, but showed up a little early. The atmosphere, quality of food and service is way beyond most (in my experience) than in the nearby areas ofFisherman's and Embarcadero. All of the food is super fresh and tasty. Overall great experience."

  • "Love the consistently good kale salad as an appetizer, and high quality menu items. Usually good service, and nice ambiance. It's definitely our walk to "treat" for business luncheons."

  • "We've been going there for several years....They have cut back on bread (I still like the sourdough) and olives and the prices have gone way up.....Great veggie burger, no pork chop...."

  • "I always bring clients & co-workers here when I'm working in SF and staying at a Fisherman's Wharf hotel. It's an easy walk and they make excellent food. And the bar (indoor/outdoor) atmosphere and menu is GREAT! My VP from Nashville was happy to find TIto's Vodka available. My friends and I like the no corkage fee. I already can't wait to be back... with saving room for dessert!"

  • "Make it useful - describe the scene, food and service levels. The restaurant has great intimate lighting, walking in you here the jazz playing, fireplace is a nice feature the booths are wide and the wooden table are a nice touch to the red, brown, amber colors in the restaurant. We split the burger, the combination of the bun, meat and condiments inside tasted great, but almost hard to eat as a whole, at least for me. Came with skinny fries but thought they could have added more fries to the plate. We also split a Cesar salad which was great in taste and portion. We ordered a diet coke and it came in a small oz. bottle. I would have preferred a choice of bottle or fountain drink. Our waitress was excellent."

  • "Food was great, service was good but a little awkward, I think it was just our server. We didnt get one thing we ordered which ended up being fine since the meal was quite large. Loved the live music wasn't too loud. Artichokes and the Sundaes were out of this world. Only negative part was waiting 30 min after our reservation time. We had a 7:15 and didn't get seated until 7:45 which was not ideal since we had plans after and needed to then rush. We had a great booth though when we did get seated."

  • "Consistently excellent food at Houston's/Hillstone. Never had poor food here. I know were food snobs in San Francisco but this chain is out of the ordinary!"

  • "We were looking for something nice but not overly formal and Hillstone hit the bullseye. Great ambiance with live jazz music. We started with the smoked salmon appetizer which was awesome. For the main course, I tried the ribs which I would highly recommend. We will definitely be back. Service was phenomenal. Aside from our waiter everyone else was supper attentive leaving us fully satisfied."

  • "Glad to see Hillstone has survived after all these years; ribs were great."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Several people told me how GREAT this place was! NOT! The ribs were over sauced, tasted like they had been cooked 3 days before and bbq sauce just "glopped" on them when ordered, the chicken was very small for the $$, but the coffee was hot. And WHAT view???? NEVER NEVER AGAIN! Save yourself time and money and skip this place."

  • "Once again Hillstone (Houstons) came through. The food is outstanding and the service is the same. Never had a bad meal in all the times we have been to any of their restaurants throughout the country. Wish they would come back to Chicago!!!!"

  • "Whenever I come to San Francisco this is a must place to eat. Can't figure out why they closed the one in Chicago."

  • "Starters and meals were solidly above average as we've come to expect. Spinach/Artichoke dip and Focacia Bread starters hit the spot. The fall of the bone ribs were super as usual. It's always nice that they are open to and encourage swapping out the veggie sides so that you get what you want. The service staff are all young professionals who are well selected and well trained. Jane our wait staff person was wonderful, poised and knowledgable. Her day job is to become a pastry chef but she does shifts at the restaurant to make ends meet for now. She was very food savvy and delightful to talk with and her service was outstanding. The live jazz is always a nice touch and the general overall feel of the restaurant is very comfortable."

  • "We get try to get to Hillstone at least twice a year- the food is predictably fresh and seasonal and beautifully prepared. It may be the most consistently exceptionally restaurant, w/ respect to food, ambiance and service, that we frequent."

  • "I have eaten at Houston's/Hillstone probably 100 times over past 10-12 years. The food, while good, has declines in quality over past couple years. The steak was over cooked and ribs were undercooked. It is a shame this is a wonderful place, but looks like its time to find a new favorite..."
