Diner Reviews
  • "Delightful venue for a special evening; service well paced, food excellent. We both ventured out of our comfort zone and were rewarded with a wonderful experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a scenic, romantic special occasion."

  • "Pricey, but food and service were very good. View of NYC (distant) spectacular. Make sure you go on a clear, early evening ."

  • "We recently dined at the Highlawn Pavilion. As soon as you open the door, you know you are in for something special. The dining room is rather large. but beautifully done. It definitely makes a statement!! There is an entire wall of glass windows so one can appreciate the spectacular city view. Ask for a window table. Unfortunately for us, it was a very rainy/ foggy night. The food was delicious, the service outstanding. I had the filet mignon. It was very tender. I asked to switch out the vegetables that came with the steak on the menu. No problem. My husband had the pork tenderloin and our friend, the chicken. No complaints all around. The waiter,Carlos, was just the right degree of attentive without being pesty. I recommend it."

  • "We were 2 couples out for a nice evening, and Highlawn Pavillion delivered. Despite awful weather, eliminating the normally amazing view of the NY skyline, everything else was superb. Food offerings were varied (I had a venison special, which was among the best I've had), and service was timed impeccably (we had plenty of time to chat, lingering over our courses, yet the wait between courses was just right). There was live music in the bar area, but the volume was not at all intrusive on our dinner conversation. For a meal fit for foodies, I found the prices to be good value as well. Go here, you won't regret it."

  • "Have been there many times for their superb food. The total experience of dining there is a pleasure."

  • "The bar was comfortable, quiet and friendly. The only distraction to were the overhead televisions. The restaurant - layout, ambiance and decor - can best be described as casual elegance. On a clear night, sit near a window for the perfect scene of the NY skyline. As usual the food was expertly prepared and flavorful with simple ingredients. Save room for a delightful dessert. We had a light pineapple dessert; each bite was like a piece of the tropics."

  • "Although we have been here on numerous occasions, Saturday was just awful. The filet mignon was overcooked (sent it back the first time - never ate it after the second time when it was worse than the first), the vegetables were overcooked as well (not to mention 4 pieces of beets you could fit into a teaspoon), and a quarter-sized amount of potatoes all for $39.50. They also discontinued the Chocolate Trio and the waiter seemed annoyed that we didn't want any other dessert. Extremely disappointed and may never go back again."

  • "Bought my mother there to celebrate her 80th birthday--- a special place for a special occasion. Party of 8 with 6 people, including my mother, going to Highlawn for the first time. Had cocktails first and then dinner. The food, the ambience, the service and the relaxed tone of the evening were all first rate and my mother thoroughly enjoyed herself. The Highlawn scheduled foggy rainy weather that night knowing that we would have to bring my mother back when the weather was good so that she could see the New York City skyline! Which we will do!"

  • "Highlawn Pavilion provides a consistent dining experience, the service is always great and the food is always delicious. We went as a group of 4 and we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend the crab meat salad with the avocado mousse."

  • "The night was rainy and miserable, so we knoew we would not be able to take in the marvelous view....but that did not detract from the evening. Service was top-notch. You never felt rushed or forgotten - great balance. Food was great. You can get a steak or filet mignon anywhere, so I went with the pork chop. Terrific!"

  • "Freezing night. Valley parking allowed for an easy parking experience upon arrival as well as a warm car to get into after dinner. The view was spectacular! The food was amazing and the meat was juicy and tender! Great place for an Anniversary!"

  • "Expectations were high, but were easily met. Top notch service and beautifully prepared dishes made this a very special lunch."

  • "Reservations set for 8 pm, yet we had to wait until nearly 9 pm to get seated. Service was slow and we had to ask for new silverware between servings. The shrimp cocktail tasted as if it had been frozen for a while; no taste and rubbery. The main entries were very good and scenic view can't be beat; saved the evening Staff should take lessons from Amandas in Hoboken about paying attention to their guests. For the high prices you pay to dine here, service needs to improve"

  • "Perfect service. Very nicely presented food. Great tasting and interesting. A place to take someone you want to please or impress. Fine dining at its best."

  • "Menu lacks creativity. Food was okay, but nothing that would fit a premium restaurant like this. Non-attentive service. Had to wait 10+ mins to ask for the check."

  • "I took my wife here for a "big" birthday dinner on a Tuesday night. After driving around for 20 minutes because the GPS did not recognize the address we finally got there 15 minutes late. But it was a quiet night and we were seated immediately by a window facing Manhattan. The view of the city, all lit up on this clear night was worth the price of admission. Food was all great, with a beautiful presentation. All the servers were very attentive to our needs. And the maitre'd made a point to come to our table and point out an almost full moon that looked like it was hanging by the Empire State building. It was an expensive dinner but well worth it."

  • "Magnificent view of NYC skyline at sunset into night! Service was wonderful and food was served promptly. We were celebrating an anniversary and were pleasantly surprised with the added touch of a candle in our shared dessert. 26 years ago we were married at Highlawn, as it had newly reopened. It brought back lovely memories of our wedding."

  • "We had the tasting menu with wine pairings to celebrate a special birthday. The food was excellent, and the portion sizes appropriate, so that at the pace dinner was served at we didn't end up feeling like we had over-eaten. Service was attentive, but not obtrusive, and we were given information on the different wines, and a copy of the menu when we requested it. Look forward to going again!"

  • "As noted, the food was more than excellent. But it is a bit pricey for us. Wish I had a coupon, but I guess such a nice restaurant wouldn't do that."

  • "We go out for a nice birthday celebration with another couple because 3 of us have Feb birthdays. We have gone to the Manor in the past and wanted to try Highlawn this year. When they called to confirm the woman was not that friendly. I asked for a table with a view and she said they do not take view requests. I also told her that 3 of the 4 of us had birthdays that we were celebrating and she told us if we paid for dessert they would put a candle in it! The food was good and our waiter was great. The noise is a big problem at the Highlawn. Wish I had known that in advance."

  • "We had brought our 9 month old with us and they accommodated her nicely. The service was great although I wasn't too crazy about the Chatham cod that was on the menu. It tasted too rubbery. I've been here before and have eaten the chatham cod and I remembering liking it a lot but for some reason this time around it wasn't as great. But overall, I would come back again."

  • "Recently took my wife for a nice night out and we were not disappointed. The venison strip was seasoned to perfection and the scallops melt in your mouth ! We are already planning our next visit"

  • "Everything, except for valet parking, was superb. The food and service were outstanding, and the views were fabulous. The only complaint was the valet parking, which definitely needs more thought. It took 10-15 minutes to get our car and we were typical. They clearly didn't have a system for getting cars out which were put in about 2 hours ago. If you know your way around there, you can probably avoid valet parking, but who wants to when out for a nice dinner on a cold night."

  • "I have gone to the Highlawn Pavilion many times over many years especially for the view and the excitement of being in this setting. But this time I was disappointed by the lack of choices on the menu. They were too heavy on shell fish dishes, and I am allergic to shell fish. The dishes offered were not especially interesting. I had trouble finding something I liked. The salad I ordered was too heavy on the blue cheese and the dressing was too thick. The salmon was ok in the entrée but the risotto was overly thick. I think the menu has to become more accessible especially given the prices. I will not return until there is a more interesting, diverse menu. And that is too bad."

  • "Highlawn was "Grandma's Choice." We children and grandchildren treated her to the restaurant of her choice on her 85th birthday. Everyone in our party was satisfied with the total Highlawn experience! The men decided on the slow-cooked beef special, Grandma on organic chicken, and the 3 other ladies on Scottish salmon, roast lamb, and Chatham cod. All plates were clean. We selected the duck and baby iceberg appetizers. Each appetizer was huge, so it was shared and devoured. The desserts selected were the creme brulee trio, and the Jersey blueberry treat. Inhaled and enjoyed. We appreciated the extensive wine list, with something for everybody. Our traditional choice was the 2011 Chianti Classico."
