not too crowded, but kind of
"buzzy", bar is very friendly and easy to hang out at. small tables, good ambience, the food was very good and with special dietary needs they easily substituted food and changed things on the dish to acommodate -- the experience overall was EXCELLENT! I would definitely go again and would highly recommend it to my friends"

11 page whiskey menu. What more
needs said? Oh and the food was top notch as well. The short rib melts in your mouth, and don't miss the whiskey bread appetizer!"

My husband said it was the best
pork chop he's ever eaten! It was especially good that it was so superb since there was some kind of mix-up and they had to replace his meal, but they brought him an appetizer to tide him over and didn't charge us for his meal. My bangers and mash were great. The whisky tasting platters were a hit with several in our group. My only regret was not having room for dessert - I'll have to try the molten chocolate cake next time."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Excellent service! Huge whisky
list and the food was fantastic. Would recommend the pork for sure and the starters. Skip the whiskey bread it wasn't my favorite. But everything else was divine!"

My boyfriend and I are in a long
distance relationship, and he couldn't come out for Valentine's day so we celebrated a week early. We made a reservation thought Open Table, and I made a note in the reservation about how, due to the distance, it was our early V-day date. When they sat us the hostess said, "We read your note," and proceeded to seat us in their most romantic spot. I really appreciated that they made sure we had a special little spot to enjoy our dinner. We enjoyed our food, but mostly we enjoyed that in the middle of busy NYC we had a little time to ourselves -and that the staff cared enough to honor our request when they could have ignored it. Thanks Highlands, you made our date really special!"

We had a reservation for 6 at 7:45
on a Saturday. On the plus side: our table was ready when we arrived and we were seated immediately even though our party wasn't complete. The food was fantastic -- I had a decadent steak and ale pie and a luscious molten chocolate cake. The cocktails were interesting and yummy. And we sat for hours without being rushed. On the other hand, we sat because the service was so slow. And although I'm glad to see they are doing a booming business, the place was unpleasantly packed and noisy. I had to fight my way to the bathroom and then wait on a very long line. And the menu is limited -- would have loved some more salad options. I would definitely recommend Highlands for a meal, but not on a Saturday night."

Good food and great cocktails!
Would go back again for sure."

Six of us arrived on-time with a
reservation. There was a person near the front door pretending to be the host, doing nothing, but managing to not greet us or make eye contact. I finally asked whether he worked there. His deadpan response: "you need a table." He managed to inform us that ours wasn't ready. No "welcome," no "have a drink and we'll get your table ready ASAP." After waiting another five minutes we gave up and dropped $500 at a very hospitable place half a block away. Suggestion to the management: move this guy to the basement to peel potatoes. We won't be back."
Dined on 1/10/2014
The food was great but the host
was completely unorganized. Out actual waiter was very attentive and the beef Wellington was delicious, as well as the pork pellilii."
Dined on 12/27/2013
What a waste of money, they give
you three scallops for $16??? Are you kidding me? Order the Whiskey loaf instead, DELICIOUS. Service, ambiance, and food were all wonderful. I had made a reservation and we still had to wait almost half an hour for our table, the host brought us two glasses of champagne half way through the wait. I would come back here again."
Dined on 11/22/2013
I have dined here a few times and
the food is great the crab and shrimp appetiser is the best and an interesting twist on a great British classic the brussel sprout!!"
Dined on 12/9/2013
This restaurant solidly performs
on all levels. I have visited there twice and have enjoyed both visits. The place is not fancy or pretentious and delivers on a good time."
Dined on 11/20/2013
There is a vibrant bar scene here
and ambience is really trendy West Village. We were pleasantly surprised with the food - really very good. The Scotch egg is a standout but all dishes we had were well produced."
Dined on 11/15/2013
Fantastic experience at Highlands.
Food was delicious, waiters were courteous and not overbearing. Ambiance was fantastic. The bar area was pretty happening and quite loud, but we sat in the dining area which was much more intimate. I'm still thinking of the butternut squash soup - SO GOOD! Highly recommend Highlands!"
Dined on 11/9/2013
Great drinks and a nice
Whiskey/Scotch list. The bar area seemed lively and fun though we sat at a table. Our waiter was pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. However the host was not the friendliest. My pork chop was overcooked and very tough which was disappointing. My friends seemed to enjoy their meals though. The whiskey bread and scotch egg were tasty. It wasn't a bad evening but I won't be rushing back. Plenty other places in the village to try."
Dined on 10/12/2013
I've been to Highlands several
times and it's always a consistent experience and exactly what i'm always in the mood for when going there. Beef Wellington! cozy feel. Nice atmosphere at the bar. Good service. The apps and entrees are always solid. Especially the crab toast and the burrata. Desserts the last few times have definitely been disappointing. The sticky toffee pudding is dry and definitely not sticky. The sauce that comes with it is great but there is not enough. Unfortunately they do taste like they've been popped in the microwave and just come out spongey. Other than this I'll keep going!"
Dined on 10/11/2013
The food was good although the
portions to price ratio wasn't the best. Little pieces of food for a moderately high price tag. BUT the food was delicious. Def try their scotch egg. The ambiance is quite pretty and staff knowledgeable on the food. HUGE selection of scotch, HUGE! The only drawback is that there is a bar, and it gets REALLY REALLY REALLY loud."
Dined on 7/25/2013
I am HUGE on ambiance and this
place has it in spades. The place is so pretty and always packed beyond comfort so the weeknights I try to come here are generally a bust but on the times i have been here, it's been beautiful and lovely. They have an extensive whiskey list but beware, the plates are small, which I prefer, but feel is something to note just in case you show up hungry- order a few things ;)"

Saw Highlands for the first time
driving past in a cab, could only see candlelight shining through the floor to ceiling glass windows and wanted to check it out. SO glad we did, had an amazing dinner and great experience. Loved the ambience, very nice, dimly lit but still with some music to make it lively. We had an outstanding waiter who went out of his way to recommend the blue crab toast appetizer and it was incredible. I ordered the pork chop which was one of the best I've had and my girlfriend ordered the bangers and mash which was also very good - neither of us had english sausage before can't provide quality feedback here. Topped it off with salted chocolate tart for dessert = beyond delicious. Loved the cocktails too!"

I'm going to have to go back often
to try all the scotch flights. Salmon app to die for"

My husband took me here for my
birthday. We went to Scotland on our honeymoon and lived it, so the prospect of trying a Scottish restaurant was appealing. We split the scallops, which were delicious. I had bangers & mash and my husband had the Beef Wellington. Both were excellent. The sticky toffee pudding made us feel like we were back in Scotland - so delicious! The waitress made excellent wine suggestions. My husband ordered a whisky with dessert. When it turned out they had only 1/2 a pour left, they comped us the drink, which was very nice of them. If you sit in the window, you may get to see free movies across the street (hint: look up!) I would definitely come back. My husband is talking a out going there for his birthday, too!"
Dined on 9/16/2013
The food is delicous. I went with
a group of friends and we ended up getting a bunch of different appetizers and one entree to share. the plates are small, but very good. Highly recomment the prawn and crab toast and the ricotta sampler. The cocktails are also really fun and delicous! If you are a whiskey fan....definitely try this place"
Dined on 8/28/2013
Everyone was really friendly from
the moment you walked in from the host to the waiter. Food was amazing and the scotch selection was great. The ambience was romantic was well. Will definitely be going back!"
Dined on 8/18/2013
If you are looking for a trendy
place to go in the West Village, this is the place. I enjoyed a gin cocktail with mint. The tuna was cooked well and I recommend the Whisky Bread. However, this is not a quiet restaurant. There is a din that resonates throughout the restaurant that makes conversation somewhat difficult."
Dined on 8/10/2013
Really clever place with excellent
food and lovely service. Absolutely everything seemed to be high quality."
Dined on 8/11/2013
Very nice place in a nice part of
the city. Food was good, desert not great but the starters excellant and mains very good too"
Dined on 8/3/2013
This is a great date place. Food
was delish and the ambience was perfect"
Dined on 8/3/2013
This place is great for good food
and some scottish specialties and for oysters, but the real winner for me is the list of single malt scotches, which includes several of my all-time favorites !. WOW I had made about 12 phone calls trying to find a place that had a good scotch list in the village, and this one was the ONLY one."
Dined on 5/20/2013
I have taken various friends and
groups here and the food and service are always great. Fantastic list of single malts, not to be missed. Also a plus that they do not keep you standing in the bar until all guests arrive, you can have your table and peruse the menu over a scotch while you wait."
Dined on 5/15/2013
Hated this meal -- it was so noisy
couldn't hear anyone. food was "FINE" for price point. but they left my first guests waiting outside before I came."
Dined on 5/11/2013
Highlands is the absolute best of
Scottish cuisine. The Beef Wellington is out of this world. If they have the lamb burger or haggis special, those are also good bets. It can definitely get loud with the bustling bar scene only partially separated by a brick wall, and when the bar is busy, you might notice that drinks orders from the restaurant come out slower than the food. But the service is otherwise great (and they took one of our slower drinks off the check). They've also got an extensive menu of Scottish whiskies. Highlands is one of our favorite NYC restaurants."
Dined on 5/10/2013
And I'm not exaggerating. My
partner and I have very different tastes and we both love what's offered at Highlands. Great cocktail list, good beed (Bellhaven!) and plenty of Scotch (and scotch cocktails). A little on the loud side but just a little. The bar side is louder than the dining side, obviously. Service is always great."
Dined on 5/4/2013
The food was terrible. Everything
was very spicy and the menu did note it at all. The servers were excellent and they did try to help, but I could find nothing edible for me."
Dined on 4/26/2013
We are of Scottish descent. What a
thrill to find a place that offers an homage to the old country but with a new twist on old recipes. Salmon, scallops, and an incredible beef Wellington. Handsome waiters. Beautiful decor, but relaxed and comfortable. Tables a bit tight. Great flavors, delicious food. Scotch based cocktails. Loved it."
Dined on 4/24/2013
We ate at Highlands for dinner on
Sunday and really had a wonderful time. We had Ted as our server, and he was impressively knowledgeable about the scotch offerings (made GREAT recommendations) and the food. The restaurant is divided between a dining area and a bar area so we could have a more quiet dinner away from the bar. Will definitely go back!!"
Dined on 4/20/2013
I checked off "notable wine list",
but what I really mean is notable scotch list! They provide you with a huge binder with info about all the scotch they have if you are not sure what to try. Also have a few Scottish beers the you don't see that often. It was out second time there, food is great, my boyfriend loves the haggis while I'm obsessed with the Scotch eggs."
Dined on 4/18/2013
Food was outstanding. There was
only a set menu without any prices which ended up being very expensive but the quality was worth it. Ambiance is loud but energetic."
Dined on 4/3/2013
Wonderful scotch, great food and
good service. I have taken three different groups to eat here and all have loved it. Only complaint (on every occasion) was that the dining room is uncomfortably hot with no control over heating. So I would avoid November through March."
Dined on 3/30/2013
Great food; surprisingly updated
for today's tastes. Super staff. Have the Scotch Egg!"
