Diner Reviews
  • "Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We have been there twice for dinner and have thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. The setting is lovely and the restaurant itself is very comfortable with tasteful and user-friendly tableware. The service is perfect; everyone was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive without being intimidating or annoying. As for the food, we found it to be first and most important, delicious. The menu was interesting and creative. The vegetables were really fresh and wonderfully combined with our scallops, which were beautifully prepared. At the end of our meal, the coffee was excellent and the carrot cake well worth every calorie."

  • "I was shocked to read some of the reviews for this restaurant as we had an impeccable dining experience here. My dear foodie friend and I were there during Howard County Restaurant week, having never heard of this place before and were blown away! This is the type of place that you go to try new things and experience wonderful flavors and techniques. I can't say enough about the wait staff, the cleanliness and ambience of the restaurant or the delicious food. To start off, the bread was outstanding...the charcuterie platter was rich and delicious...then the gazpacho was yummy as was the beef tartare. We had the tri tip dish and the cod dish and finished off with the most delectable creme brulee ever...and we LOVE creme brulee. Well done!"

  • "Did not live up to our expectations. I hope that they are going through growing pains. Since it just recently opened, we might give it another try. Having dined at the Milton Inn many times, we were very disappointed. Service was slow, the wrong entree was delivered to one of us, it was corrected but received after the rest of our party (4 persons) had finished their entrees. They did take one bottle of wine off our bill as compensation for the error. Our waiter was pleasant enough but, at one point, interjected his opinion into our conversation without being asked for his thoughts on the subject."

  • "Highland Inn for dinner was a treat. The selection of entries was varied. The four of us each had different selections and were not disappointed with the quality (lamb, chicken, steak, tri-tips). The place is too high priced for my liking and would require a very special occasion, but then there are several competing choice in the area for that type of outing. I did enjoy the outdoor seating. The wine selections were varied. They would not allow a substitution on a side dish which was very disappointing for this caliber of venue. Overall it was very good and I would recommend that everyone give it a try."

  • " There isn't much good to say about our dinner here. Our waiter was pleasant but his accent was hard to understand. Twice he came back to say he forgot what we ordered. The charcuterie appetizer was great but the scallop was fair -served raw. The shrimp and grits were sitting so long when served that the sauce was skimmed over. Grits were gummy and shrimp was overcooked. The duck was better but the strawberries served with it were ill-conceived. Desserts were ok. Some things could be overlooked if prices weren't so high. One glass of sparkling wine was $16. We dined early enough for the Prix Fixe menu but it wasn't mentioned. The dining room felt like an old hotel dining room and not the Ritz. I hope this place can turn itself around."

  • "Went with a friend for Boy's night out (wife evicted him to host her book club.) Decided on this place on a whim...had seen groupons and I live only 10 miles away. We didn't regret it one bit. Beautiful setting responsive staff fair prices (even without Groupon) Tasty and well-presented food. Immediately bought another Groupon to take MY wife."

  • "We enjoyed a relaxed early evening meal. The dining room is attractive and spacious. The menu offered a variety of tempting choices to suit any palate. We will definitely be looking for an opportunity to return."

  • "My wife and I had a lovely dinner at the Highland Inn starting with a refreshing cocktail from their mixologists. The grilled octopus appetizer was tender and delicious. The seafood soup with saffron was excellent. My entree of succulent roasted pig, the evening's special was fantastic. While the duck dish for my wife was good, the breast's skin should have been scored and crisped with better execution. The confit duck leg could have been used some more attention as well. Overall though, we would recommend the Highland Inn to our friends."

  • "This is our second visit. The first was great and this surpassed great. Each dish was fantastic. Carlos, our waiter, was at the top of his craft. Informative, personable and professional The evening could not have been better. Looking forward to our next time which will be with visiting friends"

  • "Putting the wait staff aside, our grilled octopus was awesome, seafood chowder ok, blackened strip steak delicious and my wife got the crispy trout that tasted like salmon in a wonderful broth. We would return hoping the staff would be way more attentive and try other items on the menu. B ar area and bartender was very nice."

  • "Wow, Highland Inn was an excellent find. The Food and Service (by just one wait staff person) was exceptional. I was very pleased with the way they accommodated my gluten allergy. Everything was prepared well and the wait staff knew the menu and what would be able to work for those with a gluten allergy and other allergens."

  • "The highland may be quite a drive for Baltimore city residents. But every bite is worth every minute in the drive. Service is flawless, water is immediately offered and a small bite comes as you begin perusing the menu. Server guided us through the menu and specials. As far as the food, everything was outstanding. My companion and I practically licked our plates clean. And I noticed the diners around me were doing the same. For starters I had the warm peach salad which was a little of everything, sweet, salty, bitter, plenty of texture and flavor in every bite. Entree wise we had the scallops and lamb shank. Scallops perfectly cooked and served on a bed of incredibly fresh vegetables. Lamb shank was melt in your mouth tender."

  • "Since this was our first visit to the Highland Inn we both tried the Chef's Tasting Menu (Early Bird/Prix Fixe Menu) that is available from 5:30-6:30pm Mon-Thurs so we could sample a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts for a very reasonable $35 dollars. We had Ceasar salad and pork belly (smoked and crispy) for appetizer, tri-tip and duck for main course, and creme brulee and truffle (very chocolate) tort for dessert. Wine list was well thought out and complemented menu. One of my pet peeves with higher end restaurants (and those hoping to be) is extremely small portion sizes. That was not the case with Highland Inn - portions were appropriate for each course and provided value. We left happy and wanting to come back with friends."

  • "The food was great, although I wish there was more of it. The desert was delicious. This would be a good location for a wedding."

  • "The NY Strip steak w/ Gorgonzola sauce was outstanding. The Jack Tarr potato side dish is tasty & large enough for 2 to share. If you order a steak or seafood a la carte, you pay extra for a sauce and/or sides & they are not inexpensive. The scallop entree was very good. It had 3 large scallops, enough for me but may not be filling for larger appetites. It comes with some side vegetables. The Caesar salad was a disappointment, OK but nothing special. The gazpacho soup was excellent. We had a torte dessert-very rich and just OK. Our server seemed inexperienced but other servers did a great job. We thought the total cost was excessive especially for western HoCo. Why can't they put salt/pepper on the table vs. needing to ask for it??"

  • "I ordered the blackened filet mignon and it was fantastic! Cooked perfectly at medium rare; juicy and tender with a nice blackened seasoning. I also had a side of the duck fat fires, which are topped with seasoning. Overall, the food was excellent. The only reason I did not give it a five star rating is I felt as if I was eating in a country club, which I don't particularly enjoy. It was super quiet in the dining area and my wife and I felt we had whisper throughout dinner. Maybe if that just had soft music (jazz, Sinatra, etc) playing in the background it would help the atmosphere. I certainly return for the food!"

  • "My husband and I went out for a date night. What a wonderful, romantic place! We had a cocktail at the bar first. Very nice. The bartenders really know their stuff. Our table for 2 was great, quiet with views of the pasture in back. The appetizers as well as the enter were first rate as well as the service. We could not find the room for desert but they looked wonderland on the menu. Go here. You won't be diasapointed!"

  • "The steaks were very good, but the shrimp and grits was gummy and bland and the clams casino were chewy and overcooked.. The server took forever to take our drink and food order, took our empty bottle of wine and walked away before we could order another, and didn't wait until we were gone to pick up the book with the tip while telling us what door to leave by, although we were not done. Save your money and go to Bistro Blanc instead."

  • "I am SO glad I bought the Groupon that led me to your restaurant! I arrived curious, and left astounded. The service was phenomenal, (I wish I could remember the name of my waiter, I would sit at only his tables next time), the food divine, and the ambience/atmosphere was perfect! The waiter talked the seared duck up so much that I ordered it (never having tried duck before) and now I am a duck fan! The tomato gazpacho was mouthwatering as well - I almost asked for seconds! Thank you for making my evening one of the best I can remember."

  • "We were seated in the main dining room, 'above' the outdoor seating area. The noise from the door below slamming (constantly) was distracting. The butter was so hard we couldn't cut it with the bread knife; warming it slightly prior to serving would add that special touch. The filet w/crab/beschemel was wonderful. The filet w/crab cake not so (crab cake dry). The NY strip was very good. A bit pricey/pretentious."

  • "We had dinner at the Highland Inn as a group birthday celebration, altho I got special cheesecake with candle. Very nice presentation, with Happy Birthday written in chocolate on the plate. My entrée was exceptional. I had Filet Mignon Oscar. The beef melted in my mouth and the lump crab meat was sooo good. Asparagus & béarnaise sauce was so complimentary. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees also. Desserts were nothing exceptional, however, but still very tasty."

  • "We had such a lovely first visit to The Highland Inn, where we were celebrating my Birthday. Everything was spectacular - wonderful service, wine, all the food was delicious. The touches from the amuse bouche and the plated Tiramisu Birthday dessert made the evening even more special. We will definitely be back again!"

  • "I was excited to discover a new local restaurant via groupon. Glad to experience that the service was extremely professional and the staff has an extensive menu and wine knowledge. We ordered the seafood gumbo, lamb shank and scallops. Sadly the gumbo was delicious although the shrimp had an odd consistency, the lamb was half fat and inedible however the edible lamb was tasty. The scallops were excellent although for $30 I would have desired more than 3 sea scallops. There were many birthday celebrations on a Thursday along with mine. A complimentary piece of cake was provided. Thank you!"

  • "My partner and I were delighted to find this place. Nice ambience, excellent service, and, for the most part, excellent food. Donna has what she described as the best grilled shrimp dish she had eever tasted. I had an excellent gumbo soup and a halibut dish that should have been terrific, but was enough overcooked that it was dry. I hope and expect that this was a blip in the curve for this otherwise great new place in Howard County."

  • "Our Saturday evening at the Highland Inn included excellent food (the octopus appetizer was genuinely remarkable!), a comfortable setting and ambiance, and a chance to chat with the new chef. Overall the experience was delightful. However, an apparently inexperienced support staff did not complement the other positive elements - superb food and an excellent waiter. Our group had to ask for bread three times before it appeared, even with the bread fellow serving an adjacent table twice. But with experienced management, that issue will likely be resolved by the time we return, which we will."

  • "We started with some handcrafted cocktails the grapefruit and rosemary martini was Great! The lobster, bacon, mac and cheese was so good I have been craving it all day. The Caesar salad was interesting because they use bib lettuce, the house made dressing was very good. For our entrees we had Shrimp and Grits the best I have ever had, and the Braised lamb was tender and flavorful. We had crème Brulee and vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce both were excellent. Service was friendly, accommodating, and polished. The place is very tastefully decorated and very comfortable. I recommend sitting on the patio on a nice night it is peaceful and you can watch the deer, and the sunset just beautiful."

  • "This was my second visit to Highland Inn after experiencing a delightful lunch a few months ago. The food was good (best scallops ever and worst fingerling potatoes ever tasted). The ambiance was fine. The service on the night our party of four dined was "poor". On five different occasions we had to repeat our request to our sever more than once. Four of the request were never heeded even after the second request. We had to ask for our check from another server after waiting 20 minutes to even see our server in the room. The bottom line is-if she had paid as much attention to actually "serving" rather than talking non-stop - our visit would have received a higher rating. Not planning to return or recommend this venue any time soon."

  • "This is the second time we have gone to Highland Inn and both times, the food has been almost cold when we get it. Our waiter could barely speak english and we could not understand what he was describing about the menu. He also forgot to bring side dishes, so overall the experience was poor at best. With a couple of simple changes, I think this could be a good place. It is also expensive as well for mediocre service."

  • "We arrived at 3:00pm and asked if my Father-in-law could order off the dinner menu since they were still serving brunch and he didn't see anything he wanted on the brunch menu. Kathy, our server, was wonderful. She checked with the chef and said no problem. She was attentive to our needs without hovering and offered suggestions for our meal. the food was outstanding. We sat outside on the new patio and it was quiet and peaceful. With so many chain restaurant in Columbia, it's nice to find something special, which is what Highland Inn was for us!"

We went back as bought more Groupons because we will DEFINITELY come back!! Filet with Gorgonzola Demi, lobster Mac and cheese, and peanut butter bread pudding --- absolutely perfect!!"

  • "The food was excellent here. We had steak and scallops, and they were cooked/seasoned perfectly. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was new and very clean. The service was a little slow. I noted when I made my reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary, so I was puzzled to find that the waiter assigned to us was also the bartender (the bar is quite far away) - that must be why he disappeared for such lengths of time. Since I made a note about the occasion, that was a bit disappointing. The prices for everything were also quite high compared to some other comparable restaurants in the area. Unfortunately, that makes this the kind of place I can only recommend for special occasions, but not a place I would frequent."

  • "we went here with the purpose of using a groupon and then forgot to use it lol. love the bar area, bartender gave great service & cocktails. we ate in the dining room on the main floor. ambiance is lovely. our server wasn't super friendly but may just have been having a bad night. i loved my specials appetizer of mozz and tomato with fresh pesto. it was divine and the tomato ripe. my husbands gazspacho soup was weird. it tasted more like a jam and less of a tomato based soup. we were there on a tuesday and fell into lobster night. my lobster was a little tough but meaty and filling. hubby had a fish special he loved. skip the chocolate macadamian dessert... not worth it. we look forward to coming back and using our coupon!"

  • " We were told Tuesday night was "Lobster Night" which was described to be a lobster shelled, roasted and put back in the shell. What we received was a whole steamed lobster unprepared to eat - not even cracked claws or tail! The waiter said he was " as surprised as we were but that is why he brought out small forks for us". We sent them back. They prepared the tails but not the claws ( the messiest part) and gave us lobster crackers. Never an apology. The service went down hill from there...the server left a half bottle of wine not poured - assumed we were done and would take it home, we waited for our check while 3 other tables we cleared..."

  • "The restaurant is in a restored house in a bucolic setting, close to Columbia. We were seated promptly, and our server, Kathy, provided excellent service from start to finish. As appetizers, the grilled octopus and the grilled caesar salad topped with fried oysters were very good. For entrees, the monkfish was cooked perfectly as was the crabcake. Of note was the food presentation, which was creatively done. The wine list was comprehensive and the pricing was in-line with other restaurants of this type. The Highland Inn is a welcome addition to a suburban area that has few fine dining choices. We will most definitely return."
