Diner Reviews
  • "I have had excellent service and food regardless of time of day or number of diners 2 to 100! "

  • "We took the family to brunch after church for Easter. We asked in our open table reservation if they were seating outside, that we would like to try it. When we arrived, it was packed!! But we wer greeted by name and asked if we still wanted to sit outside- it was amazing! They were soooo busy, but our very friendly server, Kayla (flanked with plenty of other friendly waitstaff to help her serve) took excellent care of us. The food was great (with the exception of the children's chicken tenders). LOVE this place - brunch is always a treat!!"

  • "My second trip to Highland Avenue and it's a lovely restaurant. I hope the menu will change as the variety of options may start to seem lacking. It's a bit pricey for the foods being offered and we will only probably go a few times per year on really special occasions when we are in town. As far as the food goes, I had the trout. It was a bit overcooked and dry and they were out of the side I wanted to order, but that can happen anywhere. The service was lovely and seemless. Overall, I was very pleased with the restaurant and recommend it - especially to those that are staying away because of the prices. I will keep an eye on their menu on line and eagerly wait for new offerings to come!"

  • "No need to travel to Charlotte anymore, maybe not even Manhattan. Settle in at Highland Avenue and you can have the same food without the travel. Everything we ordered here was perfect. I don't know if the pork belly starter was better than the bed it was served on, but we ate both as fast we could. The hanger steak was perfectly cooked, and my only regret was that my wife would not let me get more of her lamb. Dessert was a panna cotta, and we have never tasted better. And we've eaten at some fine places around this world. I don't work for Highland Avenue, but I'm thinking of coming out of retirement if they offer dining benefits."

  • "I took a customer to Highland Ave and it was also my first time. It was a hit. The food choices are excellent and the service was fantastic. We can't wait to get back."

  • "Coming from Charlotte, we meet our Asheville family in Hickory from time to time for dinner. Hadn't yet found a great place to eat/meet, but that changed when we went to Highland Avenue this past Saturday. Both Charlotte and Asheville have such vibrant restaurant scenes that we've gotten pretty spoiled, but Highland Avenue rivals the best of both burgs! With a "farm to fork" menu, first-rate service and a beautiful space in a restored flour mill, this is not only a great concept but one that is realized in the excellent food served there. Highly recommend this dining experience!"

  • "Great entree and appetizer selection, very creative! I loved the beet salad, beautifully presented and fresh tasting. Will definitely be coming back!"

  • "This was our 3rd time at your restaurant. The brunch we had there last Sunday was VERY disappointing! The food was awful & not at all what we expected. We've had dinner there twice & both times were very good. But, we will NEVER come there again for Brunch. What a waste of our $$! Tripp's far surpasses your Brunch on any day."

  • "Great food and service. Supporting local farms with fresh meat that is all natural and veggies as well. My wife and I will def be back"

  • "We got seated at a table that was so wobbly that the glasses were falling off. It wasn't until I personally got under the table to try to stabilize it that someone came over to help us with it. There was no salt and pepper on the table... I had to ask for it. The porkchop and salads were good (which is why the food got 3 stars). The shrimp and grits can be described in one word... Boring! A serious pile of grits with the flavor of a bowl of breakfast porridge. The food came out way too fast, and once again, were reminded why we hated going out for dinner in Hickory (in and out in about an hour... seriously, does no one in Hickory understand if you're spending $100+ on dinner, you'd like to SAVOR IT!!?"

  • "This is the best restaurant in Hickory. The menu has very good variety and excellent atmosphere. We have eaten there 4-5 times since discovering in November and my only negative is would like to see them change the relatively small menu out more frequently. I understand they are doing this shortly."

  • "The setting is very nice, food is good. Was rather noisy. Think the problem was due to being "Prom night". Have eaten there several times before but was never that much noise. Had difficulty even talking across the table. Will return but pay attention to school events."

  • "This was our fourth visit to Highland Ave. After the last visit, we had decided not to go back. Some friends suggested that we try it once again. This time it was excellent!! From the drinks through the main course, everything was fantastic!! We will go again."

  • "I've eaten here several times now, and always have a great meal and good service. The ambiance is great with very open feel and huge windows from the old factory that was here. It's now one of my top 3 restaurants in the area for fine dining."

  • "The food was fabulous and the service was top notch. My husband had the Lamb Shank and I had the Chicken. Both were portioned just right and absolutely delicious. The Bread Pudding is to die for. It's a must try!"

  • "My husband and I went to Highland Ave. for Valentine's Day and it was the perfect place. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations. Each course was amazing and the ambiance was perfect for a romantic evening. We will definitely be back soon!"

  • ".Really disappointed about the evening at H. Ave. Grill. Ambiance is very nice. Really stands out in terms of atmosphere in Hickory restaurants. That's what brought us there. The food won't bring us back. For dinner for 2, with 2 glasses of wine each, our bill was $109 not including tip. The Lobster tail special which was an absolute joke, portion wise. For $35 I want a lobster tail, not crumbled bits of lobster over risotto. I ordered two DIFFERENT red wines (glasses) and when the waiter brought my second glass, he poured what was left in my first glass into my second glass. I was stunned. Trout was dry. Small portions. When I spend $100 for 2 on a meal, it needs to be top class all around. This was, by no means, top class."

  • "High price small portion. Hanger steak somewhat tough on Valentines Day Menu. On a previous visit, was over-charged for an item. It is a very nice looking restaurant, however we will likely not return soon. There are a number of non-chain restaurants nearby that are much better in price and quality."

  • "My husband and I ate at Highland Avenue after Christmas and enjoyed the whole experience. We received two envelopes to open at our next visit. We decided to take my mother and sister to Highland Avenue for my mother's 92nd birthday. Our waitress opened the first envelope and said, "Oh, you are lucky. You won a bottle of wine." Then she proceeded to open the second envelope and exclaimed, "I can't believe it; you won another bottle of wind." Needless to say, a good time was had by all. The food, the wine, the ambience and the dessert was great."

  • "My girlfriend & I recently ate at Highland Avenue and I am very glad we did. From start to finish, everything was perfect. Service was prompt but warm, food selection was good... price was on the high end for Hickory but the food was well worth the price. It was fresh and had a unique twist from the Shrimp & Grits I grew up on in Wilmington, NC. The main course along with the creme brulee we had for desert, were both delicious. I would highly recommend this location for a romantic occasion!"

  • "Dinner and service was great with one exception...We ordered the burger, medium rare and it was REALLY Rare, pretty much uncooked in the center. By the time we realized, it seemed too late to send it back."

  • "Recently some of my friends celebrated a birthday at Highland Avenue. We all had the chicken dish and rated it as excellen and filling. I had been there in December and had received one of those surprise gift cads which I used for the birthday dinner. The surprise gift was an appetizer of the chef's choice which turned out to be a grilled scallop with arugula and a delicious sauce as garnish. The ambience of the restaurant is so special because of transformation of the mill. It is definitely a great place to dine and one I highly recommend."

  • "Our group all agreed that brunch was very good at Highland Ave. Serive was attentive . The ambiance is very nice...the reuse of a former hosiery mill makes it a unique space. Reminders of its former use are tastefully displayed We look forward to returning for dinner or brunch in the near future."

  • "Service was a little slow. Took a while to even get our drinks. I asked for a straw for my water and never received one. Finally went to bar for one myself. Atmosphere is awesome. Great table set up and bar area. I was surprised ladies' room was a single stall for a restaurant this size however. Foodwas good but for the price, portions could be bigger."

  • "Pork chop was plentiful, cooked to perfection but tough. Scallop appetizer was delicious but very, very small portion. The beef tips were superb. The waitress was a bit authoritative and offered average service. Wine selection limited and a weak pour."
    Dined on 12/19/2013
  • "The crab ravioli was too dry and bland. I would recommend additives with the crab meat inserted into the pocket of pasta. Should not have to break apart ravioli to mix the flavors ourselves. The chef is progressing though. Keep up the hard work."

We would definitely return for another special occasion, or with our families some evening. Thank you for such an enjoyable experience!"
