Diner Reviews
  • "The menu here was limited however the food options we selected were very good. The only annoyance was the disappearance of the waitress who rarely checked to see if we needed anything. This erodes the value of the meal as it was a bit pricey for the service we received. Not sure I would recommend or return."

  • "Delicious brunch - amazing cheese grits. The eggs Benedict with the pork belly was my favorite!"

  • "High Cotton was one of the first favorite restaurants when we first started vacationing in Charleston area years ago. Lots of changes and lots of things stay the same. The ambiance is wonderful. Service is fabulous. Menu has shortened significantly from the extensive listing that used to make for difficult decision making but all in all still a must do while in town."

  • "The place gives you a real feel of the historic south. The food and service were both top notch. I would make it a must on our next visit to Charleston."

  • "We love to sit at the bar and eat. The bartenders were knowledgeable about the menu. We had two great plates and loved the food and atmosphere. Live music, but wasn't so loud as to not be able to have a conversation. I would recommend this restaurant to all!"

  • "My wife and I highly enjoyed this restaurant. We were visiting from out of town and came at the recommendation of a friend. Eat here and you will not be disappointed . This is truly a fine dining experience you will not forget. We enjoyed our cocktails, appetizer, dinner, and deserts. The two of us got out of here for $120 plus tip. It was definitely an expensive meal, but well worth it for a special time. It was a very charming restaurant. We enjoyed our bacon wrapped rabbit loin served on a bed of pimento cheese grits."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and were very pleased. Our server was outstanding, the food was great as well as the bottle of wine we had for the occasion. We were even given a wonderful dessert for our special night. Only thing that was weird was when we arrived the hostess didn't have our reservation that we made online. I showed her the confirmation email on my phone with correct date and time, then they found us in the book for the following night...I think they eventually found the correct email reservation. Other than that, everything was perfect. We will be back, but might call to make a reservation instead of the online option. Thanks."

  • "Our family of four really enjoyed our dinner here. My husband and I both ordered fish entrees and were completely impressed by them -- fantastic flavors and very fresh."

  • "The food was delivered to our table with such speed that we were saying we were having "fast food" when should have been having a nice relaxing dinner. Once we ordered, the appetizer was on our table within 3 minutes. When they cleared those plates, the entree was brought within 1 minute. Meanwhile, the host kept coming into the dining room with an iPad, looking at each table and checking things off. He obviously was keeping track of how fast each table was progressing toward turning the table over. I'm sure many restaurants keep track of the same thing, but in a subtle manner so you don't even realize it is happening. The iPad checker, in addition to the fast delivery of food made us feel very rushed."

  • "This restaurant is in a great trendy neighborhood but is not overcrowded or loud. I had a delicious salmon dish, cooked perfectly, with a tasty lemon sauce. Side orders were also very good, and provided a selection to suit everyone's taste. Our waiter was courteous and friendly and provided excellent service. This was the best of all the meals I had in Charleston. It's on my list of top restaurants in the country."

  • "We went twice because it was highly recommended and a local wanted to meet there. The food and service is good. The clam chowder is some of the best you could get anywhere. Very tasty and fresh . The cornbread is sweet and moist. delicious Kale Caesar was okay but the fresh flounder was quite tasty. It's a good spot to try when in the city"

  • "Great food. High point - menu changes periodically with interesting food combinations. Wide variety of dining adventures including lamb, rabbit, more than one fish choice and steak variations. Keeps the restaurant as a fresh experience."

  • "Service was poor. Had to wait for entree that was then cold and undercooked. Waiter missed an opportunity to wonder why half of meal was left."

  • "If you are looking for a place for a special occasion or just a nice meal, then you can't go wrong with High Cotton. The food and the service are consistently excellent. Reservations are recommended as they are always busy, but there is some seating at and around the bar. You can be dressed casually or go with a jacket and tie and not be out of place. I would not wear jeans. The entree prices are on the high side, but the menu emphasizes local ingredients and everything is fresh. There is an extensive wine list if you wish to purchase a bottle and there are wines available by the glass although that list is more limited."

  • "There were six of us to celebrate a birthday. We had Sunday morning brunch. Everyone enjoyed their food choices. There was one comment about the shrimp and grits being a little too different from what was expected."

  • "We had a wonderful experience. Food was all exceptional and service was great. Not our first time here and definitely won't be the last!"

  • "The restaurant was lovely and the service was good, but the food not nearly as good as I had anticipated...I think the worst was my ribs with pasta, which was too salty! I wish I had said something to the waitress....I'm sure she would have taken care of it. We had had good experiences with SNOB years ago...."

  • "Thia was a low coubtry jazz brunch you will love. Huge portions and reasonable prices are served by friendly waiters who smile. A jazz band plays in the bar. It is a draw for locals and tourists alike."

  • "Although exhausted from a couple of fun filled days & nights in Charleston we went to brunch at High Cotton on the advise of friends. This was one of the highlights of our recent visit. Our whole family enjoyed a great brunch. Take advantage of the Chef's suggestions, you will not be disappointed. The hit of the meal was the Crab Cakes Benedict. We will make a point of returning the next time we visit Charleston."

  • "We expected good food and got great food. We expected good service and got very good service. We expected a big dining room and got a small more intimate room with just the right amount of sound from the small music combo in the next room. Three of the party ordered Low Country Boil and all three loved it. One ordered the Scallops and thought they were very good. Two ordered the beet salad and thought it the best they'd ever had; one ordered Mussel and clam chowder and liked it and one ordered the Caesar salad and liked that, too. We declined on coffee and dessert as we were too full for anything else--we cleaned our plates."

  • "After years of dining at High Cotton, we may not return. Our entrees were exceptional ,the dessert was made twice, and still not made correctly.(molten lava cake) Since it was my birthday, that was a disappointment. The service was Ho-hum. The server gave more enthusiastic tables she was serving, but less attention to us.(2) She did the right things, when requested, but was very inattentive, and lacked enthusiasm/interest in our dining experience. We are Maverick customers, and looked forward to any time at High Cotton. Our dinner check was over $150, so I don't know why the service was so low key."

  • "we chose this restaurant on a friend's recommendation, and will now recommend it ourselves!"

  • "This was our second time here, and it was even better than the first. The food is beautifully presented. Last time I had the lamb, but this time I had the duck. The duck was perfectly seared on the skin side to render the flavors without leaving a fatty layer, seasoned beautifully, but not overcooked through the interior. Melt in your mouth is tough to pull off with duck, but they did it. Next time I'm going to try the rabbit loin. My girlfriend gets the filet mignon every time but tries different sauces; there are several to choose from. Atmosphere is incredible, old world style. We had a table by the window looking out on Bay Street; feels like its 1870."

  • "We went there twice in one three-day weekend. Both times had the buttermilk fried oysters - outstanding! The tile fish, pesto mahi mahi were terrific. The succotash with the mahi mahi was out of this world! The next evening, the lamb was so-so. Reasonably tender but not much flavor. The service was wonderful."

  • "sent my three daughters here for dinner. Over 45 minutes to get the appetizer... The entire meal was a marathon... Food was decent but they were very disappointed in the service"
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "My traveling garden friends and I booked all the" in" restaurants for our week long visit. We found HC food delicious but service lacking. Two of our sides never came out. The main courses were delicious, but not extraordinary. The famed fried oysters were not As crisp as they could be. The size and sound level of the restaurant was both too large and too loud for my overall pleasure."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "This is a very pretty restaurant with good service and a nice buzz. The food, however, was as bland as bland can be. The salad dressing was good but they really skimped on the bacon, and the few fried green tomatoes in it were in hard chunks. . The crab cake not worth eating. The fried oysters were just OK. It is a shame because the setting is so lovely and the staff is good. We wouldn't go back."

  • "Had the bacon wrapped stuffed rabbit loin, never seen on a menu before and it was soo good! Cool bar scene with a little band playing. Will definitely be visiting again"
