  • "Food and service are great at Hickory Lane, but it's so noisy and the tables are just smashed together. Those are my only complaints. Otherwise, it's a great choice. Have been there a number of times and have never had a bad meal or service."

  • "Brunch is average. Tables are on top of each which makes the place very loud. Waitress was polite but looked like she was directed to push us out. Not the best experience"

  • "I went there on the same day as the Fairmount Arts Crawl so I am going to give them a pass on the fact that the overall experience was just OK. They were ill prepared for the crowds and did not communicate that issue well to customers. Food was very good, even if my burger did come with a dot of chocolate on it...I will go back but if the service is as bad as it was on this day, it will be my last."

  • "We had driven by the restaurant on several occasions but finally had the opportunity to try it out. The place is small so there's not a lot of seating and tables are very close together. We enjoyed the food, theh restaurant, and service but it was a bit noisy. This might be expected for a Saturday night and the size of the place. We tried holding a conversation but it was a challenge unless we really put our heads together. It was our first time to the restaurant so we'll give it another chance and see if our experience is similar. You might be able to find on-street parking. It's a block away from a public parking lot (closer to 19th Street on Fairmount), which was convenient. The dress code varied between casual and dressy casual."

  • "Tables were so close that our servers had trouble walking between them. Our beer was warm and they said that was normal. Overall, there was no reason for us to come back."

  • "A creative brunch and one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had."

  • "Overall dinner was excellent. Upon entering we immediately said to each other that we thought they added more tables. This was really the only complaint, we were very cramped in the restaurant. There was barely room to walk to the table. We got calamari and French onion soup to start. The soup was super good. The calamari was good but overpriced for the portion. Knowing how good the burgers were we opted for a burger and pulled pork sandwich. Both were amazing. The drink selections deserves an A+ as well. Despite knowing how good the mix drinks are, I couldn't bring myself to order an $12 cocktail, so I went for some of the great beers they offer."

  • "The three of us have all been many times and really enjoy the food. The burgers are the best in the city and two of us are big burger eaters. It is the top quality of all the ingredients and the ability to get the burgers to the liking of everyone. The service is excellent especially considering that the tables are very close together. The noise level is very high and makes conversation at the table difficult. But overall a great place for food. Will certainly return."

  • "Mmmmmm, food was well prepared and service was phenomenal...we had just one little problem (well maybe two)... Hickory Lane is way too small (we felt like sardines having being seated in the central floor space). My husband and I were hesitant to move as getting my cell from my bag, adjusting my seat (kept scrunching towards the table to allow servers to serve) was a real challenge. Stretching my arms or bending my elbows clearly took me out of my lane and into the other guy' space. I wasn't comfortable which made my actual eating experience uncomfortable. What a dinner dinning disappointment. The other "little" problem...the " Valentine's Day Special" drinks were way too high...4 drinks came to $53 WOW! We weren't expecting that."

  • "Atmosphere was good. Service was quick. Food was good but the burgers reviews in prior ratings were way overrated. It was a very cold night and the room was chilly and we weren't by the window so overall it is cold spot when it is cold out . Kitchen is by the door and the food was also cold quickly. The Mac and cheese is a great appetizer! So glad we tried it, sangria was tasty. We would go back probably in warmer weather. Staff were very friendly and responsive !"

  • "The menu was varied and our food choices were absolutely delicious. We really loved the 5 Onion Soup and the Hanger Steak was cooked to perfection. The prix fix menu is a huge value. The service was charming. Well done all around."

  • "Got to restaurant early and sat at the bar - had a great conversation with two people next to made . bartender was very nice and added to the bar chatter. Crowed space but very nice - waitress was very sweet and helpful. Burgers were awesome (as she suggested)! Did not care for the bread pudding but the Italian crème desert was great. Nice place - great food - great prices. Great bar too!"

  • "Our food was quite tasty (the brunch chilicaques were the highlight). I ordered a cocktail which was pretty well done, but a bit small for the price and not as amazing as it could have been. Might not order the drink again, though they have some things worth trying on the cocktail menu. Still, I think their food (burger!) is well worth it even though it's on the somewhat pricier side in my opinion. You get what you pay for, at least, which is more than I can say of many places."

  • "Burgers and steak grotesque was delicious as was the butterscotch pudding and the homemade doughnuts. Great coffee and cocktails as well. Our server Harry was attentive and all around great!!!!"

  • "I don't know if the menu has changed recently. I've wanted to try Hickory Lane for a while, but the menu always seemed too meaty for me. Now it seems lighter, and I'm delighted to have given it a try because I will definitely be back. Nice ambiance, friendly waitstaff and food that was absolutely delicious. Portions were not huge, but I'd rather have a healthy portion of really good food than a big plate of mediocre food. I ordered the roast chicken breast and it was, in a word, perfect. Tender, flavorful, and attractively presented. I had a side salad that was fresh and tasty. I've heard the burgers are some of the best around. Don't know if I'll try that next time, but I do know there will definitely be a next time."

  • "For restaurant week, they had a special $35/ course deal along with their usual $25/3 course deal--it was hard to choose which to get since they both were excellent. The Cardigan Manhattan is a true innovation. I have eaten here 3 or 4 times--it is a bit of a hike from where I live, but more than worth it. It is now on my list of favorite Phila. restaurants."

  • "My husband and I came here on a whim since we always walk by it and we were completely surprised/taken off guard by how amazing the food was. You HAVE to get the burger, I'm not a big burger person but this just took it to a whole other level. Only issue was that it was extremely cold outside so sitting near the window was a bit uncomfortable. This place will be awesome to come to when the weather is warmer."

  • "Hickory Lane is a good neighborhood retaurant, but like most restaurants it needs to be avoided during Restaurant Week. Food was good and up to normal standards. RW portions were ample, but our experience was awful. HL packed in a table for 8 that should have been a 4 top. It created a painfully overcrowded space for all other diners and likely a violation of the fire code. The wait staff was unable to make their way to most tables without great difficulty. Bar was overcrowded adding to the bad experience. We waited way too long for sorbet to be served for desert. We will return because we support our neighborhood restuarants but it will take some time for the bad memory to subside."

  • "The issues I had at Hickory Lane fall under the category of "s*it happens." So I'm not going to focus on what the issues were, but I will say that the staff resolved them quickly and graciously. The food very well-prepared. The bartender is skilled and doesn't neglect the little (but important) things about cocktail serving; my martini was perfect. I'd go again. You should go too."

  • "Cure place, went for Sunday brunch. The staff is very friendly and service was good. Food was just OK, nothing special. Two of us had the eggs benedict and they fine, but not memorable and unfortuanltey the breakfast potatoes were cold. We will probably not return."

  • "Went here for a date night with the wife and had a great experience all-around. The food was very good, I had roasted lamb that peeled off the bone and didn't even need a knife to cut into it. They had a great selection of cocktails, beers and wine as well. The decor is very cute inside and out and is a good spot for a nice night out."

  • "The food was OK but not great. We were there on a cold winter night and were seated by a very drafty window which made our dining experience uncomfortable. Our server was the bright spot of the meal, very attentive and pleasant. Probably will not to go back."

  • "I was going to the Fairmount section of Philly for a concert, so I looked up restaurants that served brunch. Hickory Lane received all positive reviews, so I booked it. And I was glad I did. The atmosphere just felt right---you know? When something feels comfortable, good, pleasing. Fabric wallcovering and a window of walls that most likely open out in the summer provide the backdrop to an intimate dining room. The tables are close together, but I forgot all about that when the food arrived. Some of the most photographable food I can remember seeing coming out of any kitchen. I had the special French toast, with strawberries, blueberries, fresh cream and custard. I will return for the burgers: ranked in the top 25 in the US."

  • "Pay attention to prices. Was there for brunch, I didn't check everything, but the menu price for a side of bacon was $3, receipt showed $4. I already sent the waitress back for bringing me the wrong check, didn't want to start haggling over prices and wait another 15 minutes. Food is good otherwise."

  • "Came for brunch on thanksgiving. Had pork belly and poached eggs. Very good. Parents had their turkey special. They were also happy with their choices. Waitress was very nice and attentive. Ambience was nice too. I will def be coming back."

  • "All 6 of us enjoyed our meals. The hanger steaks were full of flavor. Although a fair number of the mussels were served on the plate but not opened, the waitress did deduct same from the bill. Soups were tasty. A nice neighborhood restaurant with reasonable prices."

  • "We ate brunch here after the Thanksgiving Day parade. Was a short walk to the parade route and found parking on Fairmount with no problem. We were looking for a place that offered a variety of veg and vegan dishes and we found it. The quinoa oatmeal with excellent and perfect for a cold winter's day. The tofu scramble came with soy "bacon" and home fries - all were delicious. Will definitely go back for dinner !!"

  • "This is not the first time I've been to Hickory Lane, however it was the first time I've sat indoors. It was an extremely cold night and we could feel the draft through the window. The restaurant became smoky from the open kitchen on two occassions, the second resulting in a fire alarm and fire truck arriving. Although inconveniences this did not necessarily put a damper on the evening. I have enjoyed their food in the past with no complaints - nothing fancy but definately tastey (love their soups!). Unfortunately our service was a bit slow resulting in my salmon being overcooked and the sides on my dish being less than lukewarm. I was hungry so ate it anyway. To end on a happy note their Cheese Plate is fantastic!"

  • "hickory lane is one of the few restaurants that isn't trying to hard. They have a menu that anyone can find something on. I, myself love a very dynamic menu, but my Fiance is very picky so we find it difficult to find restaurants in a city whose culinary identity is still lost. Hickory Lane is one of the few places that has a menu that is actually basic. It has the staples and they aren't over flavored with odd creations. They just make good food, and they make it right. I've had dinner and brunch here and its one of the few restaurants in the city that I always keep on my list of possibilities. Plus the bartenders here are great!"

  • "This was my second time eating here in a month--it is moving to the top of my list of places to eat with friends local and from out of town. It is in the space formerly home to the BYO L'occa. It is a very different place though. There is a full bar--and the signature drinks (especially the Manhattans are over the top). For my second visit, we arrived before 6:30 in time for the fixed price $25 three-course menu--it is a steal--more than ample portions with multiple selections. I cannot ay enough good about this place. GO! GO! GO!"

  • "The change in chefs appears to have lowered the bar a bit from our prior visit. The risotto is gone from the menu and what remains is pretty standard comfort food. The hanger steak frites was ok but presentation was not a priority. The beet salad was more greens than beets. The pasta was pretty good. Overall, it is a nice neighborhood kind of spot, but since we're not in the neighborhood we probably won't go back."

  • "...I would come here all the time! We picked Hickory Lane because it was near other things we had planned, and were rewarded with an unexpectedly memorable experience. If braised oxtail with salsify ever appears on the specials menu again, I recommend it highly! My friends ordered the steak frites and salmon BLT--both were delicious, generously portioned, and accompanied by perfectly crisp hand-cut fries. All this in a diminutive but inviting dining room with views of the passersby outside. We really couldn't have asked for more!"
