Diner Reviews
  • "Should be made clear the restaurant is located in a hotel. Did not provide the atmosphere the name and description would lead one to expect."

  • "Great find - food is outstanding and the Saturday "live" entertainment is a pleasant surprise. They also offer a very comprehensive Sunday brunch with BYOB champagne for your Mimosas."

  • "If you are in the area of Morristown, you MUST eat at Hibiscus Restaurant. We've eaten there for lunch (great), but our very favorite is their brunch. The food is fabulous. They have enough of an assortment of foods for everyone and each one is made to perfection. For brunch, I suggest reservations. So, we have 1) great assortment of foods, 2) excellent taste, 3) what! entertainment to help make it more enjoyable! This can't be. Yes, it is!"

  • "This was a great discovery which we only tried because we were staying at the Best Western. The restaurant is small but cozy and the food was excellent -very fresh fish, uniquely prepared. The service was most professional and attentive. There isn't much of a wine list but you are allowed to BYOB. And to top it off, the entertainment was enjoyable."

  • "food was good, music was great, but our waitress was awful!!! She took our order, dropped off our food and asked us if we wanted dessert with our bill in hand."

  • "Overall the Hibiscus Restaurant was great. The Ambience was cozy. It would be ideal for any occasion. The staff overall was very friendly and the food was outstanding."

  • "We liked everything about hibiscus good food, clean, good service."

  • "The food was absolutely delicious the flavors and the spice was to die for just the right amount especially if you like spicy. I also love the BYOB idea. I love going to a place where I can also hear my conversation with whom I am with and not bombarded with loud overpowering music. The music selection was mellow and tasteful. Also the staff was friendly and timely. I will be back very soon!"

  • "The food is really good but the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. The décor is dated and tired looking.......it could definitely use a face lift. This is the first time I had ever been to this restaurant, I found it on Trip Advisor and booked it through open table and no where on open table or on the restaurant's website did it say that this was a BYOB place. Since it said that it was located in a hotel I assumed that they had a liquor license but I was wrong. They said that they are not affiliated with the hotel and it is BYOB. We called a service to deliver wine but we had to pour and refill our glasses ourselves, the staff was not attentive in this respect."

  • "The food is consistently delicious, and the staff are very friendly. Though service may be slow at times, the food is well worth the wait and price."

  • "Unexpectedly a really good restaurant - situated in the basement level of a hotel.. the ambience was just 'ok'...however the food was very good and we will go back.....Service was a bit "off" ...either 'too much' ( too many different wait staff coming to our table) or 'too little' (nobody around to ask for our bill ) - however that being said...the great food balanced out the erratic service. ...the music level was 'energetic' (as noted in other reviews) but quality of the musician and the music he was playing was excellent....!!!! Would def reccommend...for the food and the music...."

  • "Although the food was quite good, it took nearly two hours to be served. Our waitstaff was gracious and didn't hide in the kitchen. They explained that the kitchen was backed up, and kept us updated. That didn't stop our growling stomachs, however. When the food arrived it was well presented; fragrant; and very tasty. The whole red snapper was a bit spicy, but steamed to perfection. The brown stew chicken was tender and flavorful. The rice and peas were cooked perfectly. Flavors were wonderful."

  • "Food was very good and traditional Jamaican fair. Piano player very good and played diverse music but a little loud for the small venue."

  • "Hibiscus was a very pleasant and cozy experience. The decor is romantic and the size is conducive to an intimate night out. The food was good and flavorful, but not as spicy as expected for authentic carribbean dining The sauce for the appetizers however is where most of the 'heat' was detected, and may be what make this restaurant stand out just a bit from others. Perhaps I will go back and sample the jerk chicken to prove my theory. Otherwise the restaurant is on par with others of this cuisine. Pricing was a little high given the portions, and the automatic assessment of a 20% tip (for two people) was a bit of a turnoff. But overall, it's a nice restaurant and fits the mold of Morristown's Night life."

  • "A talented chef/owner in a dive location with low quality service. The food is wonderful. Tastes like the food we ate in Jamaica while there. The restaurant decor is mauve with mirrors and tacky fake flowers for centerpieces. There was a woman singing there the night we were there and it was extremely loud and annoying. It was a jazz singer and piano player in a Jamaican restaurant...what?!? How about some authentic Jamaican sounds? The waitress was terrible. There were 8 tables filled and everything took forever. No refills on drinks and was not very professional. Overall, the chef/owner needs to either get a new location with better quality staff or go work for a Jamaican restaurant that is already established."

  • "The food is very good unfortunately the reservation is not managed well. We had to wait for more than 10 mins despite having the reservation and also the reserved tables being available at that time"

  • "Food and service was very good. Only minor complaint was only taking one coupon, but I guess we will go back to use the other one. It said one per person, not per table. That being said, it was our second time thee and we will go back. The food and music was very good."

  • "I absolutely loved the food! Jerk shrimp skewers, curry chicken, and brown stew chicken was excellent! Its great for a little private romantic dinner."

  • "Hibiscus was a great surprise. We were wary about a menu that has Italian and Caribbean/Jamaican food, but don't let that stop you. The chicken stew was right on with unique flavor, and the oxtails were just as described - fall off the bone delicious. If you want unique cuisine, definitely check this one out! Located in a not-so-glamorous floor of the Best Western, but worth the visit. We will be back soon."

  • "We enjoy having live jazz with our brunch. If only the brunch would start earlier, noon is so late. Really love the Caribbean dishes! It is nice to find food that actually has some spice too, they are authentic. Would just like to see something more creative done with eggs than just scrambled."

  • "We questioned our choice as we felt like we were being sent to the basement of the Best Western Hotel and in fact we were! We were greeted promptly but it seems a table for four was not reserved for us. We were seated at a round table for six and it made for a less intimate evening as we were shouting above the live jazz that was a bit too loud for dining. The music was a great touch and definitely a reason to venture to Hibiscus. Food was good. The oxtails were fabulous and the little bread sticks tasted like cinnamon donuts. Bread pudding was amazing. The Sampler appetizer was a good start. Service was friendly but very slow. The wait between dinner and dessert was a half hour. We enjoyed the evening and will likely return."

  • "It was 2pm on Thursday - late lunch. The first two things we asked for we're 86ed what we ordered did not come as described on the menu. Key ingredient missing. Waitress indicated it was a slow day. Our waitress, who was behind a curtain near kitchen maybe 10 feet from our table, was yelling at her owner/manager for a good 10 minutes. Soap opera was turned on TV while music played on the speakers. We were only people in restaurant. Waitress forgot to bring out plantains. Needed are a more professional atmosphere, professional waitress, and better management. Groupon used so I feel we still received good value for the meal but again I was traumatized by the atmosphere."

  • "We were looking for something different and we found this restaurant on Opentable. Nice live music (though a bit loud) and friendly personnel. Food was good and just the right portion. Had the oxtail. It was very tasty."

  • "we have been here for lunch and had a nice experience but they were over their heads on New Years Eve and there was much confusion over everything. I think they were under staffed and not prepared for the evening. But the food was good and overall, they were very pleasant people"

  • "What a wonderful Jewel! Set with pretty colors, lovely lighting, fully carpeted and tables set with quality linens and nicely spaced for comfort and conversation. This room is 'just the right size' for a lovely romantic, intimate date or for a business dinner.and is fabulous for listening to music!!! the versatile accomplished jazz pianist Betty List and marvelous, musical, smooth ,suave ,lyrical great vocalist Bill Robinson- their choice of accompanying musicians is top drawer! Our guests , very particular re: food quality , preparation, as well as presentation, thought the food (mahi mahi was excellent) and they will return just for the cuisine alone.. We second their decision. We will happily return."

  • "The food and value are very good. Unique cuisine...........with an improved ambiance (does felt a bit like a motel restaurant) and move into town, this place would do great!!!!!"

  • "Hibiscus was a wonderful find right off of RT.287 on South Street in Morristown. It isn't easy to find because it is in the Best Western hotel and you wouldn't expect it to be there. Apparently many people know about it as it was full the night we went. The blends of flavors and spices excites the palate and the friendly service makes you feel like you are in a resort. We will not wait for a special occasion to return to Hibiscus."

  • "We were a group of 6 on Saturday, an evening when a delightful singer/pianist often performs. Music was fabulous, but a bit loud for quiet conversation. All ordered Hibiscus Salad and recommend it. We shared plates of the Hibiscus sampler of appetizers plus extra coconut shrimp. For entrees, the menu variety was perfect: Rasta Pasta, Baked Chicken, Chicken Parmesan, Seafood Pasta and a pork chop from the Specials menu. All were beautifully presented and delicious. The staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful with our BYO bottles of wine. Water glasses were never empty. The live rendition of Happy Birthday and the excellent versions of the songs we requested rounded out a very enjoyable evening at Hibiscus."

  • "Nice atmosphere. Good food, but almost a full hour between appetizers and main course. It was a Saturday night and the place was busy, but not packed. The various servers seemed to disappear when the food was obviously way too late. They should have at the least brought more bread or something to nibble on. They should have been better prepared for a Saturday night."

  • "My family and I ate here on Friday night. And while the service was slow, there was a three piece band playing that made the wait enjoyable. The food was great. Best Jamaican I have has outside of NYC. The restaurant itself takes some getting used to as it could serve as a conference room in a Best Western (which actually houses the restaurant). Other than that, my whole family raved about the food. The festival and jerked chicken are not to be missed. We have done carry out too but it's just not as good as getting it right from the kitchen."

  • "We were never greeted, never seated, never presented a menu. There were only two people working the night we scheduled reservations. Another couple that was waiting with us, decided to jokingly seat us after we waited for approx. 10 mins and give us menus. The waitress came over and kind of laughed about it with the couple but never greeted or apologized to us. We left and headed over to George and Martha's and had a wonderful meal. I have visited Hibiscus several times and the food is great...but the service is getting worse and worse....I would not be surprised to see this place close its doors. There are many great options in the area and I would suggest anyone looking for a great dining experience to try another establishment."

  • "My family and I visited Hibiscus primarily to savor the Caribbean cuisine and was not disappointed. My husband and I had classical Caribbean flair meals which were well presented but most of all were authentic tasting with all the seasonings and taste of the Islands. My daughter had a guava glazed Chilean bass which was extremely light and fresh tasting. The restaurant has a friendly family type atmosphere- not too crowded, able to keep a private conversation going with excellent service.. To top it off we were entertained all through our meal by the soulful singing of Tracey George. Excellent experience, will surely visit again especially when there is entertainment. Would highly recommend this restaurant."
