A word from Hi-Life Restaurant & Lounge
Hi-Life Restaurant & Lounge is one of the Upper Eastside’s most popular and longstanding neighborhood restaurants (est. 1993). Hi-Life's 1930's decor is the backdrop for restaurant & lounge classics like flame-grilled steaks and hamburgers, broiled and seared fresh fish specials, bountiful "Big Bowls" of pasta and entree salads, and last but not least a Sushi/Raw bar. (Hi-Life was the first NYC restaurant to install a traditional sushi bar in a non-Japanese restaurant setting in 1993. Expertly prepared sushi & sashimi at Hi-Life is a natural extension of the classic Raw Bar one might expect in our 1930's environment.) Hi-Life also serves a "traditional Eastside brunch" that features fresh squeezed juices, complimentary blueberry muffins & cinnamon toast as well as a 2.95 brunch cocktail deal. In the warmer months Hi-Life opens all the French doors along Second Avenue to provide an inviting "cafe society" experience. Continued

  • "This place has amazing specials. Half price sushi on Mondays and Tuesdays are a ridiculous deal and the fish is fresh and delicious. Tempted to go every night because this place is so good."

  • "This is my go to spot in the neighborhood. I can have sushi and everyone else can have whatever they want. Food and service is consistently good."

  • "This is a great standby. We usually order the same thing, but every time we venture to a new dish, we're glad we did. The hostesses and waitstaff remember us, including our drink preferences."

  • "From burgers to sushi, everything here is consistently good. Also, the music is handpicked by the diners, and the wait staff is extremely friendly! "

  • "We went for brunch at Hi Life. The food at Hi Life was mediocre at best. The cappuccino maker was broken when we dined so we had their regular coffee which was a bit like black water. The service was attentive and friendly. This place felt like it might have been a fun, kitschy place to go a few years ago but it is dated and smelled a bit like a bar after a heavy night of drinking. Maybe it would be better for cocktails, although the bloody mary I had with brunch was not good and had a limp piece of celery in it."

  • "I did not like the blueberry pancakes that I ordered which were yellow in color and strange tasting. The others I. My party ordered omelettes which seemed good. I would go back but would order something else. Also the pancakes were served lukewarm."

  • "After seated on our table: Assigned to a waiter named "MATT"...He didn't come to our table right away for menus and wasn't attentive to customers needs or follow-ups. VERY POOR SERVICE. :-("

  • "Have been to Hi-Life many times because of the consistent service and food. Menu has a very wide selection of items so there is something for everyone. Have never had anything I didn't enjoy. Accommodating with dietary requests. Very kid friendly. On this particular visit, our waitress was disappointing. She was very friendly & attentive to the point of ordering. We didn't see her again after that - thankfully the other staff came to her rescue. One person in the party didn't get his food until everyone was nearly done - and the order was fries and mini muffins - she claimed he never ordered anything. hmmmm. Will go back because I know this was an individual person, not the restaurant."

  • "i ordered the 4 oz filet mignon and was surprised to get 2 pieces of very flat meat. i will say that it was quite tender and tasty, just a very peculiar shape for filet. other than that, the place was practically empty, so it was quiet. and the service was fine. i would definitely go back but i bet it's nuts on a sat nite."

  • "This is my neighborhood go to favorite. You can get anything - and unlike other places with a big menu, everything is good. I especially like the high quality of their sush which is very reasonably priced."

  • "I have eaten here several times and I have always enjoyed it but this was the first time that I tried the brunch. I LOVED it. Will definitely be back again soon."

  • "then this the place to go, particularly if you have children. Options range from burgers to curry. We went with another family and at our table, there was sushi, cobb salad, nachos, burgers, and grilled cheese. The food is decent and the staff was very friendly."

  • "I came to this restaurant for my 22nd birthday dinner and everyone loved the food and the drinks were amazing. It was about 13 of us and the accommodated us graciously. I was able to bring my own cake for the dinner and the waitress cut it for us (with a small fee per plate) and I was able to enjoy my food, my drinks, and my family. It was an awesome dinner."

  • "Waitress came back and asked for a larger tip. She was wondering why we only tipped her 10 percent. I felt forced to give extra, even though the service was mediocre at best. Have never had such an experience. We should not be forced to tip a certain amount, especially since the service was mediocre and the bill was $150."

  • "Check with your psycharirist before going...they will place anything in front of you no matter how long it has been sitting in the kitchen, or how dry or unappetizing it looks or tastes.....this is done with a straight face...oh so sorry didn't realize the pigs in blankets died days ago..."

  • "I had 19 family members aged 18 to 85 for brunch today and it went extremely well. My original reservation was for 10 people. I called midweek because we were up to 15 and the midweek manager, Earl, was very nice. He told me to just call Sunday morning with the final count. This morning I spoke to Chris, the weekend manager, and upped it to 19. When we got there (1 pm) all was set up. Everyone was really pleasant, our food arrived promptly, and everything was hot and very good. Jennilynn, who was managing Sunday brunch for the first time, was excellent. Everyone was happy, not a single complaint. Well done!"

  • "Have been coming to this restaurant for several months now (once a month) for a book club. With a large group, it is sometimes hard to predict exactly how many people will come and sometimes, we have been a few less people short than the reservation. The owner has never been pleasant but at our last book club, he was downright hostile and rude and we will not be coming back to the Hi-Life. He refused to seat us until the entire party showed up (despite explaining that people come late) and refused to honor the number of people the reservation was for and only seated those who were there. The people who came late had to squish because they did not give us the appropriate table."

  • "Again, the $21.95 summer lobster special is fine, with reasonably sized lobsters well prepared. Hi-Life dinners, however, are marred by sloppy service and excessive noise from unruly patrons and amplified "music". Wait staff is probably well meaning, but slovenly dress and inattention detract from the dining experience. Never sit by the window unless you relish fumes and noise from the busses at the block long bus stop adjacent to the restaurant."

  • "Weekend $21.95 lobster special was fine. Service staff needs more training and supervision"

  • "Always enjoy the food, friendly service and fair prices. This visit was particularly pleasant as there were no noisy small children."

  • "My husband and I go to this restaurant fairly often. We like the relaxed atmosphere. This trip we were disappointed to find that they did not have the lobster roll that was advertised in an email I received. We were able to rake advantage of their early bird specials however, which are served until 7:00PM."

  • "After 7:00PM Thursday too many very young children and screaming infants makes it impossible to enjoy the very good food that Hi Life serves. This restaurant has become the neighborhood place for young couples with young children to have dinner and parties. I used to be a regular customer but no longer can recommend or continue to attend as long as kids make the place unenjoyable. We left after 8:00PM and screaming kids were still there."

  • "Always enjoy my meal here -- especially chopped cobb salad which is big with lots of fresh ingredients. Brunch was also generous size and eggs prepared as ordered. Be mindful there are lots of children here. Wait staff is efficient, professional, and friendly."

  • "went for weekday lunch, few diners around. my waitress was inattentive, embarrassed me by chasing outside because i did not pay, only gave tip. weirdo as it was a bad scene - she apologized outside the restaturant of her careless gesture, inexperienced waitress i gave her cash money and i said why dididnot you get the money when i gave cash in the first place waiting for her attention. in attentive, lack of experience waitress, will not come back and will not recommend."

  • "I've been to this restaurant a numerous of time and don't think I'll ever come back. The manager on duty was so rude. My friend had to change her son and the manager suggested that she changes him on the floor since there was no where else to change him. She ended up changing him in the front and when I asked her for a bag to put the diaper she again gave an attitude. Then when we sat the waiter tells us that there's no more muffins and then when I ordered eggs benedict with salmom they didn't have salmon. I suggested to teh waiter that he should offer us an round and he had to clear it with the manager who we heard wasn't happy about that since she was complaining really long. I think you should look who you have as managers."

  • "A step or two up from a diner in food quality and atmosphere. We often go with family groups of kids and parents. There have many flat screens playing sports.Wide variety of food choices from salads to burgers, fish, chicken, pasta, and even sushi. Turkey burger, pad Thai and brown rice vegetable stir fry are very good."
