Diner Reviews
  • "After having heard many positive comments about Heyday, we tried it on a Monday evening. The interior design, wait staff and menu selections were top notch. The chicken liver tart was surprising sumptuous (not usually an eater of liver dishes) as were the choices of entrees: Grilled Dorado, Monkfish and Pork Tenderloin. The waiter's suggestion of a new local beer, Bauhaus, was an excellent suggestion on a hot summer evening."

  • "The food was amazing - well prepared and imaginatively presented. We had the chicken liver tart for a starter. The combination of the chicken livers with beets, cucumber slices and edible flowers was fantastic. We each had a different salad and shared the pork rib eye. All were wonderful mixtures of foods and flavors. We never felt rushed and our server was a good guide to the menu. Great place that we would definitely recommend."

  • "Had the opportunity to have dinner here last Saturday evening. Although our table was somewhat delayed the hostess was gracious enough to offer to buy us another cocktail. I was impressed with the establishment's consideration to good customer service. Wait staff and service was impeccable as it was the first time I was there. My only gripe was my entrée. I ordered the Malt grilled pork rib eye. The entrée itself was very good but if a portion that small is served it should be ensured that ALL of the pork is edible. One of the two pieces of meat consisted of so much gristle it was not possible to eat. That was my only complaint. Other than that this is a first class establishment and will definitely dine here again."

  • "We found the restaurant a bit pretentious, and our wait person made it that much moreso..... Probably won't go back"

  • "Delightful! I think we ordered one of each off the menu. My favorite cocktail was the bitter redhead!"

  • "visited as a group of six last Saturday- had friends in from new york that this spot sounded perfect to entertain! - noise level was high enough that i could only "get" my half of the tables' conversation. we ordered 12 of the 14-16 plates adding extras on the amazing mussels and lamb tartare. every dish was wonderful the wine list was carefully selected and included my all time favorite rose that we had just consumed before arrival! very fair wine prices, btw we will definately be back soon but i think we will choose the bar for seating- i liked the space better"

  • "I love this place! Food is tremendous and the service was outstanding. Food had outstanding flavor. I had 5 different dishes and every one was a wonderful happy dance in my mouth! There is a great bar with a wonderful selection of beer, wines and drinks. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone! I cant wait to go back!"

  • "Very cool place with good food. Be prepared for very small portions."

  • "The food presentation was nice, service was attentive but food came out of kitchen rather slow. The two main fish dishes were disappointing in taste. Too many good resturants in Twin Cities to return."

  • "Creative, fresh and delicious food. Will definitely be coming back"

  • "The decor is very utilitarian, in a marvelous way. Cocktails (in my case, custom) and wines were excellent, as was every facet of the cuisine; from preparation to presentation to taste. Among other things, we had the grilled branzino, chilled asparagus, roasted squab, sweet beetroot & hazelnut, vanilla crème fraiche (rhubarb granita, frozen licorice and orange!), and the chocolate & hazelnuts. Perfection. To top things off, the service couldn't have been better; great timing & much attention to detail."

  • "Everything we ate at Heyday was delicious. I was the only one adventurous enough at my table to eat the sweetbreads, but hey, then that's more sweetbreads for me! The service was excellent...very few restaurants in the Twin Cities have excellent service so you take notice when you find one that does. Perfect for couples or small groups so you can share lots of dishes. I definitely don't miss Sunny Side-Up at all now that Heyday is in town."

  • "Heyday's understated entrance signage and casual interior decor are counterpoint to a masterful kitchen, led by Executive Chef Jim Christiansen, that produced our best Minneapolis restaurant meal in memory. Each item of our order was a serving of culinary art, from Beet Root, to Vegetable bagna cauda, to Pistachio coated Branzino to Creme Fraiche Ice Cream with Rhubarb Gratine. Unique ingredients, extraordinary flavor and texture combinations and exquisite presentations are hallmarks of this extraordinary small plates kitchen. Servers are knowledgeable and prompt and considerate."

  • "Everything was wonderful. Every dish was outstanding (except the cheese/onion ring dessert) both in presentation and flavor. The service was friendly and timely. The decor and local art work adds to the fun dining experience."

  • "This restaurant gives those of us who love the small plate options another place to love--it is outstanding!! My absolute favorite was the chicken liver tart, followed closely by the lamb tartar (sp?)--everything we had was fabulous--and I would highly recommend it."

  • "Dining experience was very special. We bounced around on the menu in no particular order. The service, the presentation, the way the flavors combined in the drinks and each plate was unique and wonderful. When finished, we couldn't pick a favorite. The home made bread and butter set our expectations high. The Grilled Branzino was maybe the best sea bass ever. The Lamb belly was very tender and tasty. The malt grilled pork ribeye could have been the favorite. Sweet Beetroot and Hazelnut was delicious, chilled mussels were good but not a favorite. Service was prompt and excellent without being pushy. Caution: portion sizes are similar to tapas. Noise levels were higher than desired. Overall 5 stars. Anxious to see menu additions."

  • "This spot is perfect for date night. With smaller plates (and prices) it's easy to try several things without breaking the bank."

  • "We went for our monthly food outing. It was a fun and different menu. Unique food and drinks. We shared 8 items off the menu between the 5 of us. A few small and a couple larger as well as 2 desserts. the least favorite was the cold mussels otherwise we loved it all. a tad spendy but it was our monthly outing and we are willing to spend a little more."

  • "Loved the place. Glad I went but won't return. Too much money for the small serving size. Disappointed in the monkfish. Delighted by the lamb belly."

  • "Unusual food combinations beautifully presented in a lively atmosphere. Quite pricey. Most of the food food did not taste good. The drinks were great, especially the house Sangria. Not sure if we would try it again."

  • "I miss J P American bistro and Heidi's, but Heydey fills their shoes very well. The limited menu may scare off steakhouse fans, but it's all good stuff."

  • "We were delighted with this dining experience. Great tasting and inventive food; engaging waitstaff, and really excellent bartender mixing interesting and tasty treats! The environment is lovely and the experience overall most excellent. One minor quibble: uncomfortable chairs make dining a shorter experience than I might have liked. Overall, a wonderful place and we look forward to more in months and years to come!"

  • "Fun, inventive artwork, fixtures and interiors. Sound level was pretty high, but worse when empty with music blaring in the early evening (great for the staff - not great for diners). As others have mentioned, lots of deafening, conversation stopping crashes from the open kitchen. Service was completely expert, casual and pleasant. Food was beautifully layered in terms of visuals, textures and flavors. Unusual and highly successful pairings. Servings are small and reasonably priced. Let your server be your guide here. Wine list moderate/high with unusual choices. Cocktails are fun. Lamb belly was great. Only misstep was cloyingly sweet desserts. Budgeted 5:30-8:00 pm for dinner and glad we made the time so we could savor the experience."

  • "The new "rabbit royale" BLEW MY MIND. The ingredients Heyday uses are accessible and recognizable, but they present them in some of the most unique ways I've seen. I love how you can have a romantic meal in the beautiful dining room, but also have a low key drinking session at the bar. It's a versatile restaurant with a lot to offer. I can't wait to see how the menu evolves."

  • "Wow, I've been waiting to dine here since it opened and I started following them on twitter! I really loved this restaurant - The service was off the charts and we were lucky enough to have a table right by the kitchen. Love the intensity of the chef's faces -now this is a dinner and a show. I cannot speak high enough of the Lamb Tartare and Chicken Liver Tart - I have never tried these items before and WOA did they knock my shoes off! Great Job Heyday - I cannot wait to dine again."

  • "We went to Hayday on Monday evening. When I looked at the menu I was a bit perplexed. Not sure if it was a tasting menu or fine dining. Combination of ingredients were too complex to get a sense of taste prior to the first bite. Not a bad thing but hard to make a decision. The waitress said small sized portions so order two to three items each. When the food arrived I was surprised, portions were adequate for all, just not oversized. The food was outstanding. Salads were unusually tasteful with unique presentation. We tried all the fish dishes. The smoked trout dish was scrumptious. We have added Hayday to our top 10 neighborhood places to dine."

  • "A group of 7 visited Heyday for dinner. We loved our experience! The food and service were amazing! We also enjoyed the art and overall decor. Some people in our party did not like looking into the cooking/preparation area while other enjoy this. Great place to enjoy a meal and overall good value for your money!"

  • "Charming restaurant with beautiful art and installations offers an interesting menu and tiny portions. It was the kind of place when your food came you wondered where the rest of it was. Very good food - just tiny portions. I'm a bit of a foodie and even for me I was taken aback that the endive was larger than my piece of chicken. There was also an unidentifiable vegetable on my plate that I was later told was a rare type of mushroom. Service was ehh... we got only one drink because we were never asked again what we needed. The hostess came to check on us not the waitress. Not my favorite find. LOVELY though - go for a drink."

  • "The hard surfaces magnify the sound to an uncomfortable level. Fabrics or other soft surfaces absorb sound. It was awful for me. Being seated near the cooks and open kitchen, there were a few times when metal objects of some kind were seemingly thrown or dropped onto metal, creating several very loud noises in close sequence that stopped conversation momentarily....very very awful. Kitchen crew might want to be a bit more careful. The lunch entree portion was much smaller than I would have expected given the price (lamb belly, $11)."

  • "Though there are a number of very well done neighborhood eateries in Minneapolis, I believe HeyDay is one of the best. Not only are the small plates beautiful to look at and even better to eat, their wine selection is far superior to any other smaller restaurants I've visited, and the prices are comparable. My guest and I were there to eat and talk a little business and the atmosphere was perfect. Every table was full with foodies casually dressed and there primarily for the food, despite the great wine list. We arrived early and stayed late, had a wonderful host and server. Got a lot of business done!"

  • "My friends and I greatly enjoyed the food; it was inventive, fresh, and delicious. We shared a number of plates and found nothing to be lacking. However, we were pushed to enjoy it all as fast as possible -- it seemed obvious that we were not seen as an early reservation but as a table to turn as quickly as possible. It was so extreme it was nearly laughable. Don't get me wrong -- they were nice and well informed about the dishes. The complaint is only because we were pushed so quickly. Because we were so rushed, we skipped the dessert course and went down the street to Bluestem Bar instead (which was great -- service was attentive but not hovering and the desserts and coffee were divine)."

  • "Trust that the chefs know what they are doing. The portions are on the small side which isn't a bad thing. The purpose is to have multiple courses and try things you've never tried before. We had the Lamb Tartare, Watercress and Ham Salad (my favorite), Seabass and the Beetroot and Hazelnuts. Also, dessert. Holy $#!*, the desserts. Eff what you heard about cheesecakes and chocolate cake. You almost have to come here just for dessert. We started with the Chocolate and Hazelnuts, a must-have if you would accept Nutella as currency. We ended up ordering a second dessert, the Frozen Coffee Parfait. Best decision ever. I'm very much looking forward to going back to try the rest of the menu before it changes for the next season."
