Everything else was excellent, so it was disappointing that that my main meal was so bad. It just didn't taste fresh. I wanted to give a better review, but just couldn't."

  • "Went for Sunday brunch and the bottomless mimosas. Service was probably the most memorable. Just plain friendly and energetic staff always ensuring your needs are met. Menu was a great mix for everyone including egg dishes, sandwiches and flatbread. I can't complain about any of malarkey's menus as he offers his unique twist on traditional food. A must do for anyone who enjoys a Sunday brunch SoCal style."

  • "Had brunch here Sunday with out of town friends. The restaurant décor is awesome, the staff is super friendly and we had a really good time. Drinks were plentiful, but food was just ok. Not bad, but ok. Three of us had the Lobster Roll and is was blah. My other friend had the street tacos, which he liked. I also had a muffin that, again, was just ok. The great staff made up for the food though because they were very upbeat and friendly. I will go again and try another menu item just to see if it was an off day for Lobster rolls:)"

  • "I've eaten here MANY times in large and small groups and Saturday's dinner was shockingly a disappointment. We had wonderful predin drinks at the bar, got seated and the waiter recommended the short ribs. 5 min later he returned to tell me they were out of the short ribs and filet (that was all the meat left on the menu). So I ordered the chicken, which was fine, nothing extraordinary. After my starter plates cleared and no silverware replaced, so when my entree arrived I had to flag the waiter over to bring me silverware! Overall disappointed in the service! Well, like I said, 1 time out of COUNTLESS which has always been extraordinary. Give it a go, it's worth it! One of my fav places in La Jolla!"

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday and it did not disappoint. It had an energetic atmosphere and you get to sit under olive trees! The food was delicious - I highly recommend the whole fish ceviche as an appetizer, and the steak with blue cheese was to die for. What impressed me was our busser - the moment we were finished with something he was immediately there to clear it, and he was always filling up our water glasses. We experienced great service and I would highly recommend this place. I can't wait to go back."

  • "This was around the 5th time I've eaten dinner at Herringbone, and the food and service have been consistently excellent. My friends ordered the short ribs and salmon, and I ordered the pasta with crab--all 3 entrees were delicious. The dessert portions are enough for 2--we all had the vanilla panna cotta with berries--wonderful! The noise level is a bit high for my liking, but that is my ONLY complaint about Herringbone."

  • "We had dinner at Herringbone this past weekend for dinner and were thrilled with our experience. Great food, great atmosphere, great service, and just an overall great experience. The atmosphere is perfect....from the open kitchen to the olive trees growing from the floor...they did a fantastic job. I love that this place pulls off hip, romantic, fun, clean, and beautiful feel without the "super fancy" vibe. We started with the mussels and although I eat mussels just about anywhere I can get them, these were DELICIOUS!! My boyfriend and I would love to figure out how they make their broth...so so good!! We had the king crab pasta and one of their fresh fish specials...you just can't go wrong."

  • "I have been here twice. First time was from a great experience. Second time, we set the bar. Bartender was not attentive, did not seem to be interested in us. Very disheartening. Food was amazing. However, I'm very disappointed with the service. To me, service is everything, even if the food is poor. I hope that they can get better service for the bar area. The restaurant is gorgeous and patrons deserve better."

  • "Just love Herringbone. The bar is vibrant - they had a guitarist playing the night we were there. The dining room is beautiful! Just love all the trees throughout the restaurant! Our food was very good - tried the crab bisque which was delicious and shared a flat bread with my husband. Our friends shared the New York strip steak and they really enjoyed it. Have to go there for dessert sometime - the desserts looked terrific but we were too full to try one. Definitely will return to Herringbone!"

  • "We loved happy hour daily m-f 4:00-6:00pm. Oysters only 1.00 each, and happy hour menu was great! Dinner in the dining room was great! The decor/ambiance was Beautiful. The puffer fish lamp with the puffer fish in boxes along the wall , Was interesting! The old olive trees inside the dining area is a fantastic touch. The food was good to, the salmon and the crab pasta I would order again !"

  • "The friendly hostess suggested a table by the fire place. After relaxing with a martini and taking in the lovely ambiance. I enjoyed an order of Kumumoto oysters paired with a glass of Sauvignon blanc. For my entré the grilled sword fish with Asian pear was amazing. My mouth is watering now just recalling it. My wife's blue cheese encrusted New York strip steak with peppercorn sauce was also very good. I look forward to our next trip to San Diego. Herring Bone will definitely be on our itinerary."

  • "Most elements of our dining experience were standard. The service was friendly but too busy to make an impression. The brussels sprouts had such potential but way too much vinegar to eat. The crispy artichoke and squid lacked flavor. However, the chocolate hazelnut bar and doughnuts were both very good. I had high expectations for my first experience here but unfortunately I do not think I will visit again."

  • "The restaurant exudes romance visually, but was rather loud. Lights so low we had to use our phones to light up the menu to read it. Although it was a fixed menu there were 3 selections per course. Most was tastful but the octopus was TOO fishy and I sent it back without issue. Everything else was melt in your mouth and yummy."

  • "We came with two others for our anniversary. The wine list is very mediocre. The restaurant looks like the inside of the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland which is kinda cool, but it does get a bit noisy. The Rogue Manhattan was good. Our first impression of server #1 was not so good. We had questions about the menu and drinks. It was clear he hadn't had any of the items we had mentioned. Next thing you know, we have a mystery new server who finished the night. I had the NY Strip which was good. For the table we added the Sprouts and Cauliflower. Others had the Short Ribs which were good but the gravy was very cafeteria-esque. Somehow in the end we still got a $300 bill. No way!! I'd rather eat at Island Prime or somewhere with better food!"

  • "We eat here fairly regularly. Since the new Executive Chef's arrival, there have been a few changes to the menu. We miss the Carpaccio so please put that back on the menu. Our group ordered the Whole Fish Ceviche and Shrimp 'n White Cheddar Grits, Oyster Mushrooms, Bacon Lardon to start. We enjoyed the Short Rib, Duck Breast and Pork Loin. All the dishes were flavorful and we were stuffed. We do love coming here because of its vibrant atmosphere and are always impressed by the consistency of the wait staff - they have all been incredibly knowledgeable of the food and wine and been spot on in their recommendations. Thank you for another enjoyable evening."

  • "I took my fiance for his birthday. The decor really is amazing. It was a little loud. Our actual server was odd, like he couldn't be bothered to take our order. The rest of the service staff was excellent; attentive without being obtrusive. The cocktails were great, but my fiance and I had different dining experiences. His scallops looked phenomenal and he really enjoyed it. As a vegetarian, my options were a bit limited. I opted for the farmer's flatbread. It was just ok, kind of dry and boring, like it's addition to the menu was only an afterthought. We both really enjoyed the dessert though! Overall, a nice place, better suited for a group of friends looking for a fun night out than a couple on a birthday date."
