Diner Reviews
  • "Everything from the drinks, entrees and dessert was perfect. It was some of the best food I've ever had in my life."

  • "The food is amazing as usual this was my forth visit. Ordered a wine that ended up being not available and asked the manager what he recommneded and he picked an awesome wine to pair with our order. Super yum!"

  • "The best food I have ever ate in my entire life! I had the grilled octopus, cheese plate, and the pork belly/ tuna sushi appetizer. I also enjoyed a couple of delicious wines! Everything melted in my mouth and tasted like heaven. I would recommend this place to anybody that can afford it. It was kind of expensive but worth every penny. I will go back for this deliciousness any chance I get. So good!!!!"

  • "Good cocktails and no major complaints. Service was good. Somehow we just expected that it would wow us a little more. Boullabaisse was good but salty. Liked the beet salad."

  • "Had Brunch at Heritage on a Saturday morning right when they opened (10 am) in a group of 4. One Celiac diner (gluten free an absolute must). We had noted this on our OpenTable reservation and the server asked right away. Our table enjoyed their Bloody Marys and two of us had Heritage Eggs Benedict, one had steak and eggs, and one had a veggie omelet, plus sides of toast and bacon for the table. Everything was delicious and they easily accommodated the gluten free needs as well as a request for Eggs Benedict without runny yolk eggs. The service was attentive but the food was the real star. A bit more expensive than an "everyday" brunch but totally worth it."

  • "We had a spectacular experience. The service was attentive and knowladgeable and responded to any request. Water glasses were refilled promptly and bar orders appeared quickly. The food was superb. Excellent quality and well prepared. Everything appeared on the table hot and appealing to the eye. The dessert, combining dark chocolate and red wine beet ice cream was a real treat. We will return."

  • "The food is inventive without being intimidating, the service is outstanding, the cocktails are unique but consistently delicious, and the atmosphere is upscale yet relaxed. Knowledgeable staff and well-timed courses make for the ultimate dining experience. It's tough to beat Heritage, since it really is the complete package."

  • "The Waygu burger is the best burger I have ever eaten. The beet salad is awesome too. Really nice decor. Our favorite restaurant in Madison."

  • "All of the ingredients used in the dishes we ordered were fresh and flavorful. The salad tasted straight out of the garden. The meat was perfectly cooked, with an excellent combination of flavors. I liked that the entrees were not oversized. I'm happy to pay for an expertly prepared dish, without needing to feel stuffed, nor take home a doggie bag. Service was a bit inconsistent -- too many interruptions up until we ordered our meal, and then almost nonexistent after the food came."

  • "Hostess did not understand why we refused table in blaring sun and sat us there anyway. The server, Julie, seemed irritated that she had to wait on us. She made no recommendations, even when asked, and said everything was "good". First course took nearly 20 minutes, which seemed a bit long considering there were only two occupied tables in the restaurant. Julie slapped down plates with no explanation of the food or preparation. We enjoyed the tempura, but not the sauces. The pork belly piece was tiny, foie gras was over-seared, sashimi tuna was delicious. The main course waygu beef and short rib crepenette were outstanding. Issues with WRA gift cert. No goodbye from host. No manager in sight. Fairly expensive. Poor service is inexcusable."

  • "Our dinners were outstanding! Highly recommend this as a special place to enjoy "fit for foodies" prepared food."

  • "The Sunday Brunch at Heritage is very good. The Waygu steak and eggs and the Heritage benedict are excellent dishes. Our server left something to be desired, however. She was not very busy, yet failed to refill our coffee, clear dishes, and inexplicably didn't put in our order for a Parmesan pommes frittes appetizer. This is not the only time that I've had service problems at the Heritage. Management needs to fo a better job of training it's staff."

  • "My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the Heritage Tavern. The food was amazing and the service and attention to detail was over the top. The staff was especially attentive and tried to answer all of my questions, but they were not obtrusive in any way. The menu items that we did not try were all very tempting and we can't wait to go back and try almost everything on the menu. A great experience not to be missed."

  • "Very compelling menu choices with a broad range of interesting options and combinations. Beet salad, sea bass and tempura appetizer were outstanding. Dessert offerings were over-sized so be forewarned. Atmosphere was subdued (it was a Sunday night) and service was excellent."

  • "Service was extremely slow, food was adequate. It is quite expensive for a brunch in Madison. I was disappointed as we went for dinner on Valentines day and had a wonderful experience."

  • "It was okay. Nice place but food was just okay. Chicken was moist had a few vegetables and a bland broth, nothing that I couldn't do at home. Great beet salad. I expected more. Will probably try again"

  • "First time visit to Madison and decided to try this place after reading other reviews. The food and service did not disappoint. The beet salad and the schnitzel were stand outs. Will go back when back in town."

  • "We were looking for a place to eat outside as it was a beautiful night and we had our baby in a stroller. This was the perfect place for us to get a fantastic meal while being outside."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "This place is good, but the menu is meat heavy with many dishes including things like kidneys and hearts, and a lot of pork. So make sure there is something that appeals to you. Not the place to take a vegetarian or vegan. The tempura appetizer is an example. In Wisconsin we like our fried cheese curds. Heritage takes it a step beyond by wrapping them in bacon. Besides that, service is attentive and the room is nice. A nitpick criticism is that the tables are so small I repeatedly banged my feet on the table legs. It's hard to sit comfortably, and I'm only six feet tall."

  • "This experience was a stretch for four 70year olds...but we all tried something different..very creative menu and we were glad we dined here!"

  • "My wife and I had the tempura appetizer, a cheese plate, Sturgeon Entree, and Braised Chicken Entree and all were amazing. Each dish uses ingredients that surprise and impress. Part of the tempura plate was bacon wrapped, deep fried cheese curds - these should be on every menu in Madison! With 2 beers and a glass of wine our bill was about $100 - which is what you'd expect for the quality of food/atmosphere/etc. I'd recommend checking it out for a special occasion and it seems easy to get a reservation through open table."

  • "As expected, the food and drinks were both interesting and delicious. The menu offers a wide variety of options that would please any palate. But the service was only adequate. The server seemed a little overwhelmed. We had to request refills and when we asked for recommendations, the server gave the less-than-helpful response that "everything is good." Also, we were celebrating a birthday, which I noted on the reservation, but the only acknowledgement was a candle affixed to a saucer. I wasn't expecting anything big to mark the occasion, but a small token dessert would've been nice."

  • "Exceptional relaxed gastro pub fair, well executed from the kitchen to the smartly designed dining room. Can't go wrong on any of the entrees. I rarely use this word, but the roast chicken was LUSCIOUS. The snacks are a great place to pull appetizers from, with special call outs to the candied bacon and the deviled eggs. Nice selections on the wine list and cocktails menus. If you are looking for something with a bit more elan than Graze but don't want to get as commited as L'Etoile, you would enjoy this restaurant. And Madison sorely needs this kind of selection. Outdoor tables in the summer! "

  • "Well executed creative menu with high quality ingredients, e.g. egg snacks, pickled veggies. Exception: sturgeon-clam-octopus drowned in a salty overpowering sauce; leave the sturgeon to swim on its own. Nice use of seasonal local ingredients e.g. ramps and asparagus. Modest but very well chosen wine list at acceptable prices. Great dessert choice. Friendly and attentive wait staff. Barside noise level is very high but to be expected. It's lively and fun. Diningside is quieter. Great for that special occasion."

  • "I recommend the French Toast with Maple Bacon Ice Cream. Great brunch menu and great wait staff"

  • "Décor was casual and upscale - exposed brick walls juxtaposed to ceilings of stained wainscoting. Bar and front dining area had decent vibe, drawing energy from the open kitchen at the rear of the space. Menu is a little bit of everything. I began with soft-shell crab appetizer, my guest, the roasted beet salad. Both were very good, but not memorable. Entrees included beef tenderloin and pistachio-citrus crusted grouper. The beef fell flat (cold), the grouper excelled. PROS: Atmosphere, seafood (ironically). CONS: Service. Waiter brought two free appetizers because it was 35 minutes+ between our ordered appetizers and entrees. $2 refills on soft drinks - really, Dan? TAB: $125 for 2 + tip, w/two glasses of wine, no desserts. "

  • "It was rather noisy on this Saturday night. We thought the service was very good. I was a bit disappointed in both entrees as each was too salty. We will give it another try."

  • "First let me say, our meal was exquisite. Started with very friendly bartenders recommending a house drink (Lost Generation) that was very inventive and delicious. Shared a Duck Confit salad and Deviled Eggs, both very tasty. I had the Ahi Tuna/Pork Belly small plate, my husband, the Sea Bass. We loved both. We loved the decor of the restaurant also, very classy. But, the thing (and it's a big one) that could deter us from ever returning was the noise level. We sat across from each other and spent much of the evening yelling to one another, no exaggeration. We are NOT hard of hearing. I came away with an overwhelming sense of "what a shame.""

  • "Not since a restaurant a block from Notre Dame in Paris have I had an authentic bouillabaisse with the explosive, rich flavors as was laid down in front of me at Heritage Tavern. Even the color of the broth, earthy bronze, tinted by saffron was authentic. The chef's ability to bring out the essence of each mussel and clam and flakey, tender piece of fish to stand on its own while participating in the meld of flavors brought together in the rich stock, supported it seemed, by some time with lobster in the stock pot, was very impressive. Remarkable richness and velvet texture on the palate, accented by the smokey flavor of the toasted French bread slices accompanying. This dinner was memorable and a cause to return with high expectations."

  • "We had a lovely dinner a couple of months back and could not wait to return with friends to try the family-style special. We knew it might be a wait (we were told about an hour) but it wasn't until well over an hour and half before food finally arrived. It was too salty and well boring – nothing special at all. Given the amount of money we spent we had hoped we would have a much more memorable – in a good way – experience."

  • "Dan Fox, the chef/owner of Heritage Tavern has received a lot of positive publicity regarding his new restaurant. Generally I look with suspicion on some of these reviews, but now that my wife and I have enjoyed a meal there, we'll join the crowd. We both ate fish as an entree. My wife's cod (cod--in Wisconsin?) was exquisite, absolutely light and delicate, but with wonderful flavor. I had sturgeon and octopus, tough things to put together, but both retained individual flavors. For appetizers, I ordered choucroute which was very tasty, but just too much for a single person; she had a tuna-fois gras appetizer which was superb, as good as Paris. Service was excellent and attentive, although the noise level might be annoying with a full house."

  • "Three friends and I went to Heritage for the first time & shared 5 dishes between the Snacks and Apps. We decided to do this as the seasonal entrees honestly weren't that inventive or worth the price tag. Dish 1 came out - an ahi tuna thing - and it was interesting. Not amazing, just interesting. While we're working on dish 1, dish 2 was delivered by a different server. This poor pacing of dishes continued and at one point we had 3 larger plates of food on our small table. It seemed like as soon as the kitchen said 'order up', whatever server was available just brought out the dish and it felt like we were being rushed off our table - not cool. And, after sharing 5 dishes, we were all still hungry. Won't return any time soon to Heritage."

  • "took my white chicken breast wife to this restaurant and was worried she would not have anything to eat however she and I were both impressed with her beef loin and short rib entree, excellent. My sturgeon and octopus also stunning and fresh, the nduja xo broth was fantastic. Service was friendly and efficient. If anything were wrong a few of the drinks wine and beer I ordered were unavailable for some reason, however the server always offered me tastes of other offerings which I found extremely nice Would definitely go back. Nice work.."

  • "Another good meal! The best dish, surprisingly to me (a huge carnivore), is the roasted brussel sprouts. It was so tasty. The combination of flavors blended together very well with the salty and sweet. We also tried the Choucroute this time. That was rich and well done."
