  • "This was beyond expectations. The food was so creative and so fresh. From start to finish I loved every bite. The pate with home made pickles was outstanding. I loved the coleslaw, full of fresh vegetables. I don't live in Madison but I might be tempted."

  • "Creative menu. Quantity of food on some items was lacking for the price. Great flavors overall."

  • "Would definitely go back. Bar tender was amazing! Loved our meal. Really want to try stuff from the snack menu next time!"

  • "I was very excited to eat here after looking at the menu on-line. I was disappointed when I got there and the items I wanted to order weren't on the evening menu. I know items change to availability, but it was very different and when your spending $30 plus a plate, you want to be excited for your food."

  • "We were spending one night in Madison and are recently engaged and wanted to have a nice, quiet, romantic dinner. An online search resulted in Heritage Tavern, the "2nd best restaurant in Madison" and we were intrigued by the reviews. Unfortunately the more negative reviews we read were more accurate; the food wasn't anything special (I wouldn't have thought it possible for fried cheese wrapped in bacon to be just mediocre), the staff had no personality, the dining area was SO loud that we actually chose to sit in the bar side, and the wine selection was also just mediocre. Ultimately it was a somewhat expensive waste of an evening."

  • "The roast chicken and sockeye salmon were outstanding. The market veggies tasted garden fresh. Would highly recommend."

  • "The food was fantastic, and almost worth the wait (50 minutes for starters; another 30 for the main course). Don't come too hungry; and bring your patience in a handbag, along with good friends for conversation."

  • "The food was exceptional. Our waiter was excellent. There was a weird delay at the hostess stand causing a crowd to get backed up waiting for them to figure something out and our entree was delayed in the kitchen however we were given a free digestif and dessert so that more than made up for the delay. We really enjoyed all the food and drinks. I will be back."

  • "An inventive menu featuring local food, a nice spot to sit outside near the Capitol, and still waiting for the staff to get the training it desperately needs. The food is very good and I will return, hoping the service will improve."

  • "My wife and I decided to go out for a nice meal at a recommended restaurant. It was a very bad restaurant experience. It started with receiving a poor table when the restaurant was fairly empty. We were told that the other tables were all "reserved", even though we had a reservation. The service was slow. The waiter was not very helpful. The food was warm at best. We were ignored after our food was served and had to flag down someone to get our check. Very poor experience for a meal that cost in excess of $100."

  • "Had high expectations for this restaurant but unfortunately will probably not be back. We had the pork belly and tuna appetizer, and it was a complete waste of $19. The pork belly we got was just mushy fat, with a tiny bit of actual pork belly in it. Server didn't come back until we were done, so didn't have an opportunity to send it back. I had the sea bass, which was very flavorful, particularly the broth in which it was served, and the fresh peas with it were wonderful. Husband had the steak, and ordered it medium rare, but it was rare. I did request a brandy old fashioned sweet, which was the best part of the meal. Service was just ok, not as good as I'd expect for the price point. Food was VERY slow in coming out."

  • "I have a very difficult time finding a restaurant I like, so that is why I am so excited about Heritage Tavern. The service was attentive without being suffocating. And the food - absolutely delicious. I have the striped bass, and it is the best seafood dish I have had so far in all the restaurants I have visited in Madison. I can't wait to share this place with all my friends."

  • "The boullabaise was very, very good. Incredible broth. The service would've been fantastic had it been a less expensive, less foodie driven restaurant. But given the character of the restaurant, I thought it was sub-par. But I would still definitely suggest dining there if you have the chance. Perhaps for a special occasion."

  • "Our server could not have been nicer or more helpful. Their specialty drinks were refreshing and delicious. I went with friends that I don't see very often, we are slow and savor each course. We never felt rushed, which we really appreciated. All courses were unique and wonderful. We had a great experience. It is pricey, but worth it for a nice meal."

  • "Love Heritage Tavern's modern atmosphere and delightful menu and staff. The beet salad is such a great mix of fresh ingredient. The cheese plate melts in your mouth. The chickpeas are a great snack. And I got the bouillabaisse - a melt-in-your-mouth combination of shrimp, clams, mussels and fish with potatoes, leeks and a broth that you will want to soak up with the delicious bread that is served with it. Don't skip dessert, either! And the wine and drink lists are amazing. The bar is also a vibrant scene and the bartenders are awesome with fun personalities."

  • "My fiancee and I went to Heritage Tavern this past Friday night and had a great time. We shared a salad, each got an entree, and ended with dessert. I highly recommend this place although it's a bit on the pricier side of things. Definitely a good place to go once in a while"

  • "Love Heritage Tavern, one dish is better than the next. My favorite is the Roasted Beet salad w/ the hint of chocolate! Have had the opportunity sit at the bar and watch the kitchen, it works like a well oiled machine! This was my second visit and can't wait to visit again."

  • "Excellent service....wiping off the table after each course?! Wow. Responsive to special requests...of course. Engaging and not instrusive...very artful. Oh the food? Exquisite drama visited upon the palate, leaving memories calling sweetly for another visit soon. Presentation was a record of an artist's well honed plating skills and clearly refined sensitivities. The whole evening was a well played culinary concerto, still echoing in memories bursting forth in unexpected moments. A kind thing to do to anyone. Thank you Dan, et al!"

  • "I was given a gift certificate for my birthday by our somewhat foodie oriented son. We tried a meat and pickled vegetable appetizer, a seafood dish and the special pork schnitzel. All the dishes were delicious and were nicely presented. Everything is ala cart. We did not choose a salad or dessert. The wait person was friendly and exceptionally helpful. The menu is a bit pricey, but the total experience was well worth the cost."

  • "Long wait for service, more for drinks, then food came out in segments. The food was probably quite good when it was cooked, but by the time it reached our table it appeared to have rested somewhere else for a while. The frites were cold and greasy, the toast under the wagyu tri-tip was hard and cold and there were shell bits in the lobster scramble. The waffle was slightly undercooked and a little gooey in the thicker sections. The fried poached eggs were really good though, even lukewarm, as were the rosti potatoes. The cocktails and wine selection were excellent. I don't think we'll be back though, at that price point, I would expect much better service."

  • "Very good to excellent food. Small portions. Gastropub must be the new word for Nouvellle cuisine. Cheese platter had excellent selections but would leave a mouse hungry. Great location and excellent decor. Very good service. Desserts were great."

  • "Good cocktails and no major complaints. Service was good. Somehow we just expected that it would wow us a little more. Boullabaisse was good but salty. Liked the beet salad."

  • "The best food I have ever ate in my entire life! I had the grilled octopus, cheese plate, and the pork belly/ tuna sushi appetizer. I also enjoyed a couple of delicious wines! Everything melted in my mouth and tasted like heaven. I would recommend this place to anybody that can afford it. It was kind of expensive but worth every penny. I will go back for this deliciousness any chance I get. So good!!!!"

  • "The food is amazing as usual this was my forth visit. Ordered a wine that ended up being not available and asked the manager what he recommneded and he picked an awesome wine to pair with our order. Super yum!"

  • "The Waygu burger is the best burger I have ever eaten. The beet salad is awesome too. Really nice decor. Our favorite restaurant in Madison."

  • "The food is inventive without being intimidating, the service is outstanding, the cocktails are unique but consistently delicious, and the atmosphere is upscale yet relaxed. Knowledgeable staff and well-timed courses make for the ultimate dining experience. It's tough to beat Heritage, since it really is the complete package."

  • "We had a spectacular experience. The service was attentive and knowladgeable and responded to any request. Water glasses were refilled promptly and bar orders appeared quickly. The food was superb. Excellent quality and well prepared. Everything appeared on the table hot and appealing to the eye. The dessert, combining dark chocolate and red wine beet ice cream was a real treat. We will return."

  • "Had Brunch at Heritage on a Saturday morning right when they opened (10 am) in a group of 4. One Celiac diner (gluten free an absolute must). We had noted this on our OpenTable reservation and the server asked right away. Our table enjoyed their Bloody Marys and two of us had Heritage Eggs Benedict, one had steak and eggs, and one had a veggie omelet, plus sides of toast and bacon for the table. Everything was delicious and they easily accommodated the gluten free needs as well as a request for Eggs Benedict without runny yolk eggs. The service was attentive but the food was the real star. A bit more expensive than an "everyday" brunch but totally worth it."

  • "All of the ingredients used in the dishes we ordered were fresh and flavorful. The salad tasted straight out of the garden. The meat was perfectly cooked, with an excellent combination of flavors. I liked that the entrees were not oversized. I'm happy to pay for an expertly prepared dish, without needing to feel stuffed, nor take home a doggie bag. Service was a bit inconsistent -- too many interruptions up until we ordered our meal, and then almost nonexistent after the food came."

  • "The Sunday Brunch at Heritage is very good. The Waygu steak and eggs and the Heritage benedict are excellent dishes. Our server left something to be desired, however. She was not very busy, yet failed to refill our coffee, clear dishes, and inexplicably didn't put in our order for a Parmesan pommes frittes appetizer. This is not the only time that I've had service problems at the Heritage. Management needs to fo a better job of training it's staff."

  • "Food was fairly good - though the service needed improvement. Arrived as the first diners with a reservation when the place was empty and still given a very poor table right by the door. Asked for a different table, and was put in one directly in the sun with no effort to address how hot it was at that table - even when acknowledged by the wait staff that it was hot. When we left - there was still over 3/4 of the tables empty."

  • "Very compelling menu choices with a broad range of interesting options and combinations. Beet salad, sea bass and tempura appetizer were outstanding. Dessert offerings were over-sized so be forewarned. Atmosphere was subdued (it was a Sunday night) and service was excellent."
