Diner Reviews
  • "Herbsaint is our go to restaurant when in New Orleans. Unfortunately this time, we were disappointed. We had two servers, one was great. The other one had extremely poor people skills. We were dressed and groomed appropriately so not sure what the problem was. For appetizers, we had the rabbit fricasse and shrimp/fish ceviche. Neither dish was quite what we had expected. Average for a restuarant of this caliber. For entrees, we had the roasted pork belly, shrimp -stewed collard greens-grits and slow cooked lamb neck. We enjoyed our entrees. For dessert, coconut tart with orange caramel and chocolate ice cream and the warm chocolate pudding with saled carmel, cashew ice ream and cocoa nib caramel corn ( one my favorite desserts of all time)."

  • "Everything about Herbsaint spells "first class." This is what a neighborhood restaurant should be - excellent food, excellent staff, and a place to spend quality time. Definitely worth coming back to."

  • "Inconsistent food quality. Everything was salty. Very disappointed after a friend highly recommended it. Will not return."

  • "Everything was delicious from the appetizers to the desert. The shrimp and grits were the best I've ever had. Their reputation for one of America's top 50 restaurants is well deserved!"

  • "An outstanding dinning experience. Every dish was a hit bringing perfect ingredients and creative and highly skilled flavors to a crescendo. A lively atmosphere with views of St Charles avenue complemented the food. Best version of shrimp and grits accented with tasso and collard greens I I"

  • "Food, service, and atmosphere were fantastic. There was not a single disappointing thing about Herbsaint. We cannot wait to go back again."

  • "We went to several wonderful restaurants on our last visit to New Orleans, but Herbsaint was my favorite. The root salad and gumbo were amazing! Their short ribs are my husband's favorite. They are listed on the menu as a small plate, but you can ask for them as an entree-sized portion instead. The are delicious and the meat falls off the bone. I, along with the other two people joining us, had the jumbo shrimp with the tasso stewed collared greens and grits. The sauce for the dish complex and divine and the grits are the perfect accompaniment. They are very generous with the jumbo shrimp and only one of us was able to finish them. Their wine list and cocktails were also very good! I highly recommend dining at Herbsaint!"

  • "A trip to New Orleans would not be complete without a visit to Herbsaint or their companion restaurants, Cochon or Peche. Herbsaint is my favorite, not overly pretentious, but with a grace and style that is uniquely New Orleans and exceptionally comfortable. The food has been and was on this visit predictably excellent, with a wine list to match. Their wine tasting trios are always distinctive and a treat with any meal. All of their servers and staff are very knowledgeable and helpful in choosing an outstanding meal and complimentary wine pairings. -- and it shows. Their entire team focuses on serving you an excellent meal and having a dining experience to match. When in NOLA, given a choice, I will always wander back to Herbsaint...."

  • "When reading the menu i was not overwhelmed with my choices for mains. However, the abundance of specials remedied this. The mains, sides, desserts, and cocktails were all excellent. The banana tart dessert was probably the best thing i ate in New Orleans. Minor quibbles: it was a little too noisy for dinner with my parents, and if there are that many specials of the day i suggest they be written down (It was difficult to comprehend them all, especially given the background noise level)."

  • "Delicious! Excellent gumbo, perfect shrimp with rice, delicious wine by the glass that was not over-priced, and an attentive staff that was not intrusive."

  • "Yummy food when you get it. Service is VERY slow and noise level is high."

  • "Went here for lunch. This restaurant has maintained consistent quality over the years, even with the departure of Susan Spicer, and I try to have at least one meal every time I am back in New Orleans. Food is extremely well prepared, to allow the essence of the flavors and textures to come through."

  • "Appetizers are unusual and very tasty, especially shrimp with mushrooms--a combination that worked very well. Our server recommended wines and was quite knowledgeable--the bottle he suggested went very well with the duck and the lamb neck. Lamb neck is slow cooked then quickly seared in hot fat and was falling off the bone. It was outstanding. Duck was tender. The cabbage heart side was delicious. We like food and are quite critical but not about this restaurant. We will be back. Suggest sitting in the back room which is quiet and calm. Front struck us as a bit noisier than we like at dinner. It's fine to take your time--no one makes you feel you should eat faster."

  • "A nice "go to " option for a business lunch on the uptown side of the CBD. A short two block walk from Poydras St (One Shell Sq. and Pan American Building) so the crowds thin out. Very good food. Many options with small plates and entrees. Very nice for a relaxed business lunch."

  • "Loved the deconstructed carbonara small plate and the shrimp & grits main course. We were in the back room just by chance which was much quieter and more conducive to conversation. Less fish on the menu than most Nola restaurants but everything our table of 5 ordered was wonderful. We want to try Peche next!"

  • "Herbsaint is a slightly cramped but pleasing space just a block from Lafayette Square with outdoor seating. Service was friendly but the waitstaff seemed a little overwhelmed on a busy Saturday night and dinner went slowly. We started with Kale, shrimp, ceviche and gumbo appetizers, all of which were good to excellent. Entrees, consisting of chicken, ribeye and lamb neck, were all outstanding. The wine list is idiosyncratic (very strong in some areas and weak in others) but we found a superior burgundy for just over $100, which was only slightly more than 2X retail. Desserts (tart and chocolate mousse) were excellent. At just over $100 pp tax and tip included I think the price was fair for the level of cuisine. Fine dining, fair price."

  • "Herbsaint was wonderful. I was most annoyed with open table site. It said there was only a 4:30 reservation available. I check opentable for other availabilities but there were none.?When we got there the restuarant was empty. Plus, they were only serving a bar menu between service shifts. I think I'll just call the restuarant next time."

  • "This is not our first time at this restaurant and we were excited to return. Upon arrival we were seated at a table near the storage area. I requested a cocktail made with Ciroc Vodka which is made from grapes but they were out of it. The problem was the attitude overall. My daughter had the Gnocchi with lamb and for most of us the meal was very good but the grilled lamb served to my husband who is Greek was inedible. The staff made no interest in the fact he was not eating it but eventually when asked responded that it was tough and tasteless. They offered to serve something else but by this point of the meal he declined. I would have expected a better response. I was very disappointed. It will be a long time, if ever I return."

  • "Herbsaint is just the best all year round, but I appreciate the fact that it is possible to combine a lovely meal with good service and the viewing of a Mardi Gras parade."

  • "Our yearly trip to NOLA always includes dinner at Herbsaint. As usual, everything was great this year. Food and service were superb. Cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desert were outstanding. We were even given tickets to the viewing stand for the MARDI Gras parade after dinner. Our only problem with Herbsaint is that it is 1000 miles from our home. We'll be there for sure next year."

  • "Took my daughter for a special birthday dinner... waht can I say? absolutely scrumptous! we both enjoyed our meals tremendously - every bite was delicious"

  • "We went for lunch and the menu was a bit "odder" than I would have liked. But the items we got were very good. My husband has the gumbo of the day and the crispy goat which he enjoyed. I got a homemade pasta that was sort of Carbonna style but they had a poached egg that was deep fried on top which made it amazing. But most of the rest of the menu seemed a bit weird to me. One thing I didn't like were the uncomfortable WOOD chairs with no pads or cushions. I noticed this in many New orleans restaurants this trip and can't understand it. I guess they want to turn the tables quickly ... but a good meal should be served in comfortable surroundings. I also think the music was a bit loud for this type of place as well."

  • "organic vegetables and local, range free pork, broken down in house. Top quality dishes made with great care. All the dishes I was served showed depth and richness yet not fussy. The bread is baked in house and the best I've had New Orleans."

  • "Great food, service and ambiance We had heard that this restaurant was worth visiting so I tried booking it for one of the first meals of our weeklong New Orleans visit. Of course it was totally booked weeks in advance. We did manage to get a sitting the last night of our holidays. What a perfect culinary ending to a wonderful week."

  • "Really enjoyed Herbsaint! The "chocolate cake and caramel corn" dessert is one of the best things I've ever eaten. The rabbit fricasee small plate was delicious. I wasn't blown away by my entree (shrimp and grits) or gumbo, and it seemed to take a while for the entrees to arrive. The ambience was nice, but we were up against a wall and felt like the light on the wall was encroaching into our space a bit. The rest of my group enjoyed their meal very much, and my wife's food allergies were graciously accommodated."

  • "Herbsaint is one of my favorite places to dine. At the best of times, it had an easygoing ambience and really excellent food. Food that made you think and smile. This last visit was particularly bad. My wife is 9.5 months pregnant (very visibly so as well) and we went to lunch for Valentine's Day. We arrived with reservations, and the greeter immediately put us in a very cramped two-seater at the end of a hallway. We asked to move (my wife was not comfortable) and were placed in the corner end of a bar, this time we were invisible. The rest of lunch went slowly, very slowly. I had to go accost a server to bring us water! The food itself was ok. I like long lunches, but this one was spent mostly waiting in a corner."

  • "Only had a small dinner as I am a neighborhood drop in. The gumbo is the best in town, tried the bean soup of the day: fabulous, The Short ribs small plate as well as the spaghetti small plate were terrific as usual. Always a great place to go. The server recognized us a "regulars""

  • "We had a New Years Eve lunch on our first visit, so it was a tad crowded. But the food (regular interesting lunch menu) was as well prepared & presented as if we were the only table in the place. I like Herbsaint even more than Cochon."

  • "The food was very good and the menu pushed the envelope. That was nice. I found the place to be very noisy & crowded. For a high end restaurant, which I thought this was, you would do better to take out some tables & not rush the service so much. It really takes away from the experience. But that's me - the choices above for noice level have "energetic" as the highest rating - that is fine for a night club, not a restaurant. But Herbsaint did beat out Cochon where we ate the following night and where we were none too impressed at all. Noisy. very poor service, tables way too close, food too salty and over-cooked - an absolute disaster. Kudos to the shift manager for being empathetic. Gautreau's was a far, far better experience!!!"

  • "There are so many wonderful restaurants in New Orleans, so I am thrilled that I found Herbsaint! Donald Link is a well known chef, and I understand why. There were three of us. We all had appetizers, entree and dessert. All of us were so happy with our choices that we didn't even want to taste the others'! The food was beautiful to look at as well as incredibly fresh and inventive. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good food. I'll be looking forward to a return visit to New Orleans so that I can have another wonderful Herbsaint experience."

  • "Our dining experience at Herbsaint was the best we've had in the last 12 months and our travels have taken us to many food friendly cities. We were seated promptly in a beautiful, high ceilinged dining room with an expansive view down St Charles. We began our evening with signature 'absinthe' cocktails and between us we sampled most of the small plates including the poached tuna in pickled chiles and mint and the gnocchi in lamb bolognese. For dinner, we relished the slow roasted lamb neck nestled in a bed of saffron infused fideo. We finished our evening with the pastry chef's prized offerings accompanied by a bottle of Dom Perignon to celebrate our victory over the 26.2 miles of gorgeous New Orleans scenery. Perfect!"
